  • "The campaign in Tunisia saw the battles that finally ended the brutal war in the desert. Not for the first time, the Allies argued among themselves over strategy; if the French had co-operated with the Operation Torch landings in northwest Africa in November 1942, the combined landings into Tunisia would have been made much sooner.
The Allies eventually landed unopposed, but the three-pronged offensive soon ran into trouble as they were faced with complete Axis air supremacy. The small German armoured unit (made up of only 40 tanks) drove the Allies back to Medjez el Bab. Meanwhile, Rommel’s army was retreating towards Tunisia, pursued by the British 8th Army under Montgomery, where it gave the British the slip by bypassing Tripoli.

What needs to be mentioned here is the important contribution of the 9th Australian division, it played a the first and second battles of El Alamein and Montgomerys victory afterwards, they were positioned st the northern flank where the Germans forces were at there strongest towards the sea, and it was here, monty focused his main attack, and for this reason the Aussies were placed there to drive and push forward , they fought so hard held crucial ground and fought off repeatedly German attacks , they nealy broke through, it caused Rommel to reinforce with reserves weaking his line elsewhere, this allowed British/commonwealth troops and British armoured unit's to break out,
After the battle Winston Churchill in the House of commons spoke of the victory at el Alamein of the 9th Australian division sacrifice ,that made victory possible, also the commander of allied forces in the Mediterranean, field marshal Alexander, he personally addressed the 9th Australian division who were leaving the African campaign to return home to face the Japanese , he acknowledged the crucial role and sacrifices played by the 9th division that they alone broke the back of Rommels German Africa Korp , and paved they way for a allied victory at El Alamein,🇭🇲🇬🇧

France had been beaten and occupied by the Germans.
Their main concern was that Britain would take over some French Colonies!
