It’s 12:22pm on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Scotland and I’m watching flight of the navigator - so naturally I’ve arrived here at this 80’s classic 😊
I saw this video several times on MTV in early 1986, but I never heard it on the radio, and then I forgot all about it. I rediscovered it a few years ago and it's aged well.
I hope Blancmange knows that we remember this video because it left a special place in our nostalgic hearts. Not even the Hooters' "And We Danced" video had much impact as this.

90s kid here, but I also grew up watching Flight of the Navigator. It was one of my favorites, and still is! Was looking for this music video, and then I remembered I could just go to the IMDB page and look up the music in the movie ^^
You can also just watch the credits. It's the only song listed that remotely could be this.
Dang, I love this video. So hilarious! Watching Arthur's mop flop around as he tries to yank a sink out of the wall, and the constant strangely shocked look on Luscombe's face--one of their best, IMO.

Around the time this song was out, they did an interview with Smash Hits (?) and one of them said it was old fashioned to apologize for being a synthesizer band. I loved that they said that! At the time it was a a bit of a bold statement which is really hard to imagine these days.
Everything is underrated these days because no one has enough vocabulary to describe what they really want to say.

I have the record from the 80s. No way to play it but thought about it yesterday. Found it today online. Amazing since I don't think I've heard it since the 80s. Lots of old emotions and memories are neatly boxed and put away with the song in my mind. And now a joy to re-experience them, much older and on the other end of the life story.
Great comment. I am listening to Neil's solo album while I add Blancmange to a playlist. I remember it from 1993 but had largely ignored it since until this week- there are some very good tracks on it, especially Suitcase.

It does seem rather silly at first, but when you consider the lyrics and song title it starts to make sense that a "home" becomes broken and no longer a home when love goes away. If you've ever lived with an S.O and it didn't work out and needed to vacate the place this video will speak volumes. Or at least it did to me.

As a 70s kid, most nuevo wavo stuff seemed real twee to me, esp. this vid when it first came out. Being older now I can look back and think some of thise acts were really legit, like the Cure, Depeche, Spandau Ballet, Cabaret Voltaire, et al. Now I look at this and think, how bruised up were these cats after this shoot? ;)

Interesting that there's a version of this music video with different edits and footage to this one. The other one has more clips of the house exterior. The other version also features a clip of the chicken landing on the floor which appeared in the Flight of the Navigator film that's missing from this version.
Update: Upon quickly researching it seems the other version was a "watered down" version due to the official version being banned in some countries for being too violent.

I would love to know the story behind this music video. Why they kept the shots as long as they did, was there a deeper meaning behind each of the items destroyed? The effects shots are great for the time and budget, but nearly every shot sits on the artists just a second after the director appears to have shouted "CUT!" if it's a specific editorial choice, it is brilliant in a surrealist comment on the MV medium just as it was solidifying as a standalone genre of video art. If the editing team, on the other hand, was given too few useable shots to cover the runtime of the audio; then it's an enormous save by that team to supply us with as coherent a final product as they did.
