Very sweet and down to earth. My Grandparents took me on the greatest vacation of my life when I was 14. Mr. Hale had a restaurant in the Burbank, Studio City area called the Lobster Barrel. Nothing fancy but very good seafood. He was in the restaurant that evening and was so kind to sit with us and visit. My Grandfather was a big fan of his father Alan Sr. He loved talking about his Pop. His face lit with color and glowing admiration for him. He sat with us the entire dinner talking with my Grandpa about his father. I was honored to be called little buddy by him and he popped me on top of my head with his famous hat. I time I will treasure forever.
I went there when I was a kid, and Alan Hale would make his way around the tables and have a few laughs with everybody, it was great. What a time that was.
I'll always miss Alan Hale he had such a likeable personality he played the skipper so good and he was always a very fine actor. What ever he did RIP Alan Hale. The fans miss you !
I saw him in the Columbus Ga airport in the early 80’s I was a young G I he was surrounded by people I didn’t approach I just sat there in amazement of what a happy go lucky guy he was He truly was the skipper RIP
My mother and her 2nd husband met Alan at his restaurant years ago! She said he bought rounds of drinks for everyone at her table (about 8 people I'm told). She also said he stayed and talked with them for about 30-40 minutes and that he was very funny. My mother hated Gilligan's Island but she was star-struck and remembered Alan from his movies in the 40's and 50's, as well as his dad's movies.
What a sweetheart of a man. My parents used to take me to Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel restaurant as a little girl. Mr. Hale would personally greet us and often would serve me a Shirley Temple on the house. He was a darling.
Thank you so much for posting this, Chuck. This goes to show that Alan was just as gentle in person as he was on the screen. Good hearing that laugh of his again, too. Hollywood lost one of the best when Alan passed. They don't make 'em like him anymore.
I don't like the fact that they have him waiting like that.this man is a LEGEND.When I see this, I feel so sorry for him.all he wants to do is to read a promo.it almost bought me to tears when I see it.To me, he'll always be the SKIPPER.We love you Alan Hale wherever you are.We sure do miss you.You were taken from us way to soon three years later from when that clip was shown.May you and the rest of the casterways (including Mary Ann) rest in ever loving peace.

@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc He did a TV commercial for a boat dealer in my native Arizona the previous summer and he was very ill. He couldn't talk very well but did his best. I thought maybe he just had a bad cold or something at the time. Nope it was cancer.
@@muffs55mercury61 I read somewhere that Carroll O'Connor auditioned for the Skipper role. I'm glad that he didn't get it because Alan Hale was perfect in the role.
@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc Oh absolutely. Alan fit just right in as the skipper. Before that he had a lot of good supporting roles in the 1950s and early '60s. He had a good mentor in his father.
Hale, either a dare or just to see what happened decided to wear a skippers cap to the grocery store and was swarmed by people asking for autographs. He always felt he could never outshine his fathers Hollywood legacy but the "Skipper" character gave him his solace and he always relished the attention right to the end.
I wish he would have worn his Casey Jones hat, yes he played Casey Jones Railroad Engineer and I loved that show as a kid I was 8 years old when that show came on, it was a short run but loved it. That alone would have brought tears to us.

On January 2, 1990, Alan Hale died at age 68 of thymus cancer at St. Vincent Medical Center (SVMC) in Los Angeles, California. Upon his death, his remains were cremated and his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. RIP Skipper 🕊

A patient, happy-go-lucky man, and kindly, even in the teeth of continuing adversity. Was Gilligan himself the manager of this mixed up studio? Seems likely. I do not think I would have the tolerance. Wonderful person.

As soon as he puts on that sailors cap you know it's him The Skipper, without it he could walk right by you. Same with Slash if he took off that hat and mirror aviator sunglasses he wears you would not know it was him either. Amazing how an article of clothing identifies a person.
