This is the definitive Asterix live action movie for me. The art direction of the sequels never appealed to me, they tried too hard to make them look like the comic book. The first film had a perfect blend of realism and comics, beautiful visuals and awesome Celtic-inspired musical score.
+Vanlande Good words! I loved how they put in the scene between Cetautomatix and Ordralfabetix's fight over the fish just like in the cartoon movies and the comic books. Beautiful memories :)
Christian Clavier become just too old. And Asterix can't be so much out of shape (not trying to insult to Clavier, it is just how he aged). And tbh first recast was pretty good, not in terms of visuals, but perfomance. But for last film they grabbed random actor from mission cleopatre and it was awful
Fun fact:the main Antagonist is played by famous italian actor Roberto Benigni (the Dad from Life is beautiful) In the italian dub,he voiced himself again : , )
The definitive Asterix film. My dad and I both grew up reading the Asterix comics, both learned German through them, both love this film so very much. What a cast, what a creative team and even the intro music is truly Asterix.
Out of all the live-action movies this one was the best. (Cleopatra was a close second). They're all good in their own ways, but this one kept the spirit of the comic while at the same time giving it lifelike costumes and sceneries. In Olympics and Britian everything looked fake, in this one you could actually feel like a part of the world

It just seems like they put more heart into this movie. They did not just wanted silly kid movie, but brought legendary Asterix and Obelix on screen with proper music.

Okay , lets summarize. My father used to brought me and my brother pirated vhs cassetes of asterix & obelix from bussiness travels. In the morning, we would wait for him to bring us presents, some of which would be above mentioned. Not only that, but I would learn subs just from one reading done by my mom or my dad. Afterwards I could rewatch them infinite times. I loved these cartoons as a child , for reasons unknown then, but now, I realise that pacing, storytelling and character design in A & O came to grow so hard on me because of their character's genuine expression and theme, that is centered around the best principles of human behavior. There is so much in these lines that are written and drawn by french artists as if they themselves drank the magic potion that was neccessary to deliver such a masterpiece as these two iconic characters. Why i am writing this is the fact that I watched this movie with my brother and dad in cinema, in a local city so small, that the only culture was attached only to the closer history of the geographical area, nothing close to animation or comic books that are meant for children and grown ups like in the case of A & O. Humor and dedication are the things that keep the work that we do bright, be it living itself, or any other profession. Celtic theme that they chose to implement in this story, connects humor and suffering to become a challenging experience for the audience as they are the observer and the contender of both this world and the world of Asterix and Obelix.
