People talk a lot about the line, "There are no heroes left in Man." but I feel the beginning is much more powerful. "Tell me now! Is there a Man among you here, Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight?" "Tell me, Man! Is there not one in all your ranks? Is there no one who values Courage, over life?" Protoman is begging for any of the crowd to stand up for themselves. I see it as the implication that if even one person put themselves forward, he'd turn around and fight Wily's forces tooth and nail(or bolt and screw, as it were)
Whenever I here the line "Is there no one who values Courage, over life?", I think of Tank Man, the Chinese protestor who stood in front of a tank in an attempt to stop it in its tracks. "Everything a man is supposed to be," in the words of Emily from Act II. www.nytimes.com/2019/06/03/world/asia/tiananmen-tank-man.html
"They'' watch you die to save their lives. They will not sand here by your side." This is the line that crushes me every time. I've seen them preform live so many times and not once have they done The Stand, I imagine it's because it would immediately crush the mood of the room.
Best damn song on the whole album. I love how you can hear the anguish in Protoman's voice throughout, especially the "THEY'LL WATCH YOU DIE TO SAVE THEIR LIVES!" part.

@@pseudogenesis I always interpreted it as his Breakman mask. Then he wears it all throughout Sons of Fate until it falls off when he dies, at which point Megaman slowly puts it on as he comes to his realization. However, I think your interpretation is equally valid.
@@baval5 Both interpretations are correct. It can also be that Protoman dons the Breakman mask when he feels less the robot he used to be and more Wily's pawn. When he tells his story to his younger brother and cautions him against humanity, he's Protoman taking pity on Megaman and feeling he's going to be broken by loneliness and despair as he was, when he's done and Megaman is still willing to fight, he dons back the Breakman disguise, as Protoman is no more there, and Megaman is no more his brother but an enemy. When Megaman kills him, Breakman returns Protoman for a final time, and Megaman returns to be his grieving brother. So Megaman becomes the "new" Breakman, but instead of breaking others he lets his own heart shattered beyond repair until he can't feel anything anymore
The opening is what drives it home. that suddenly soft piano laced with drum beats, and that sudden guitar riff, every single bit heart wrenching and gut churning. Light's words echo. "You cannot do both." Years later, I still get chills every time I hear "THERE ARE NO HEROES LEFT IN MAN. SO IT BEGINS! "
This song really hits me at heart. I don't know what it is, but that robotic cry from Protoman as he screams to humanity in a hope of convincing them one last time really just bring a tear to my eyes. This man sacrificed everything he had in hopes to have their help, but now here he is, a resurrected, hollow remake of what he once was, screaming and pleading the truth to them and his younger brother. I think Protoman knew he was about to fall one last time, but if he could use his voice once...
One thing I love about this song is how the distortion varies in Protoman's voice. The distortion tends to be an indicator of how evil the speaker's intentions are (of maybe how disillusioned they are. It's debatable). And for the most part, Protoman's voice has some level of distortion. But it's highest when he's badmouthing man, saying they're all cowards. And it's almost entirely gone we asks "is there not one among you who will try to fight?". In that moment, he's not a soldier of Wily, or a man bitter at being abandoned by those he tried to save. He's just a man genuinely hoping someone will stand up, pleading with the crowd to follow the example he and his brother have set. It really adds to the message of this song. Protoman's goal wasn't vengeance. At least not completely. He wanted to force mankind to stand up for themselves. I don't think what he's done is *right*, but it's understandable.
To this day, despite the unbelievable heights The Protomen have reached through Act 2, the Cover Up, and the (hopefully) soon-to-be-announced Act 3, NOTHING touches the raw power in the line "There Are No Heroes Left in Man"

Contrary to popular belief, if you ignore a problem for long enough, it does not go away! Unless that problem is eating, drinking, or breathing. In which case, ONE problem will be gone at least.
To me one of the most powerful moments in this song is 3:36 where Protoman jumps into the middle of the robot army and DESTROYS HIS OWN LEGIONS as he makes his way to megaman.
Why should we save them when they stand for nothing? If they DESERVE life, let them STAND FOR THEMSELVES! And the way he says this line: "We've given everything we can. There are no heroes left in man." As if it is just an inevitability is incredibly powerful. His tone is almost bored and heartbroken... A fallen hero Protoman is indeed.
Soon you realize how important both are. The prismatic fantasy of breaking out, and the dark pessimism of the stand are not opposites, but complimentary to each other
***** Rock music is characterized specifically by being relatively fast and punchy with electric guitars. Metal is to rock as the rapier is to the sword, or as crack is to cocaine. It is the refined, concentrated, most powerful version of the genre. When I listen back to back between Iron Maiden, and say, Rush, while one is rock and one is metal, it's the same itch getting scratched. The same can't be said for any of the other equivalents you drew, and if you were to find and equivalent where it did indeed scratch the same itch, I would feel the same applies.

I have a particularly strong memory of this song. I live in Massachusetts, not terribly far from Boston. I was on high repeatedly listening to The Protomen in mid-April of 2013. On the morning of the 15th, I had just gotten off the train coming home from work and I noticed there was a huge crowd on the Train Platform - something very unusual for my small town. While I squeezing through the crowd, I was listening to this song - in particular the speech by Protoman about if there was anyone who valued courage over life would stand up. I silently sung along thinking that this band was right. There are no Heroes left in Man. That morning was mere hours away from the Boston Marathon Bombing. That crowd waiting for the train was going to Boston for the Marathon. I wonder if there was meaning in that moment.
Same, I play videogames all the time, but never got to Megaman. It is on top of my list of games to play now, I am starting it tonight. Protomen is the perfect 'ad' for the game.
Wily found a loophole: There will be light as long as the darkness "stays until the sun is set". The darkness was removed. Then it came back. Damn these technicalities.
the weird thing is, when we listen we are quick to denounce humanity with it's flaws but the depressing thing is, We are humans we are part of humanity, the cowardly humans who'll put faith in that that's not us.
"humans only think for them selfs they are a selfs race that stands for good or evil which ever happened to be most convenient for them at the time"-??? "that's why...! .. its a beautiful thing when everyone comes together as one. at times they will help each other console each other and compete against each other at times even fight and hurt each other... but when it really matters they will band together stand together!! and that's why I most fight for them and be prepared to die for them I am megaman!!!"-rock aka megaman "megaman gigamix volume 2"
Can someone help me out with the Break Man references? I'm not getting it. But then I haven't heard anything of Act III except for the Hold Back The Night preview.
My guess is Wily took what he could of him (even if pieces) and tried to replicate him the best he could. Possibly his robots were able to "scan" him before killing him off so he could do what he could to rebuild him. From there, it was just a matter of simply getting a point across Proto's mind that he was fighting for the wrong side.
The band had just come out of music school when they made this album and they wanted a "post apocalyptic" sound that they achieved by deliberately going against everything they learned about recording sound well.
mankind, those living in this city, they had every reason to stay downtrodden. the diabolical schemes of Wily kept them in a malaise, and eliminated anyone who might rise up against him. and yet, a hero still arose. from this oppressive bog of a city, a hero arose. his name was Joe. he lost, yes, but not for lack of heroism or will, but because Wily was one step ahead. and yet, you, Protoman, the man who was designed to be a hero, the one who had every advantage Light could give you, the one who not only failed, but became the very thing you swore to destroy, you DARE to lecture Humanity about their failure to produce heroes. you have no moral high ground here. you were never really a hero. a hero is one who fights even when he knows he is the only one left standing.
No but he's right though. What exactly have the people done? Were they with Protoman when he went to fight Wily and his minions? How did the masses assist their creation? Did they take up arms against Wily's machine regime? No, they did absolutely nothing. They put all their bets on Protoman, expecting him to do all the work and solve everything on his own. He failed, so they decided to try again with Mega Man, ditching one machine for another. They sent Mega Man to finish the job, again not doing anything else of their own initiative. No organized resistance, no assisting Mega Man, just let him do the work and reap all the benefits. The masses had their chance, and Protoman concluded that the people refused to help themselves, thus were no longer worth his time. By Act I's end, Mega Man came to a similar conclusion when he saw them chanting for Protoman's death, begging for his help when the robots showed up. He let them die because they were too apathetic to defend themselves. Protoman is not a hero, he was just a tool of the masses, a people too lazy to work together, too undeserving of a martyr of any kind. Protoman was right, and to claim he was "never really a hero" is merely shifting blame while feigning innocence. The masses were guilty of apathy, putting their problems onto one character they never understood or tried to understand, a character they saw as a weapon they could use without needing to struggle.
@@courierbilly and what could they have done? its really easy to sit on your high horse and say they should have done "something" but what the fuck could they have done? explain to me exactly what they were supposed to do, and then explain to me a bunch of oppressed downtrodden people living day by day were supposed figure out and organize an effective rebellion in a city where a seemingly invincible regime of robot masters ruthlessly crush anyone who steps out of line? they needed a hero not because of apathy but because of lack of ability. even Joe struggled against a single assassin with a knife. to call that apathy is akin to telling the starving masses to eat cake.
@@courierbilly but despite everything i have said, despite all the countless issues that contribute to their continued oppression, this will end eventually. there will be more heroes, better heroes. human heroes. humanity always finds a way, eventually. no regime, no matter how invincible, lasts forever. there will always be heroes left in man.
@@VeryPeeved I do agree that they had no chance on their own. But when protoman was speaking to them they should have stood up and say they are ready to put everything they have into stopping wily. If even one person had stood up and fought, protoman would have turned his back on wily. Them doing nothing but cowering behind megaman was them throwing away their last chance. As now they have no choice but to fight, and now they fight alone.
@theartofapodyopsis I meant that in a metaphorical sense. He realized that Joe was like a son to him after he died, having quickly developing a bond with him. He believes (at first) that he is the one who should have died in Joe's stead.
I could be off base, but I think it's the same thing Obi-Wan told Luke in Star Wars. Protoman was defeated and the hero that he was died, and he became everything he fought against.
in the animatics i saw him meet lights eyes same with the descriptive one I think hes also telling this to Light who in his own way did fight wily, and has paid dearly for it, that they have done all they should have to do to fight

Yeah, that was what happened. It is in the lyrics for Funeral for a Son. It does mention that Doctor Light was about to explain the truth about Protoman to Megaman.
@theartofapodyopsis You never know. Years upon years pass between the death(s) of Protoman and Joe. What's not to say that Light was building a son to fight Wily, only to realize that his other son was resurrected and disillusioned?
Mankind doesn't seem to want to live until around 23XX judging by how long it takes for any sort of human resistance to appear in the actual games. Depending on what happens in the mysterious gap between classic Megaman and Megaman X, it seems kind of miraculous that they were able to survive that long even with the passive "help" of robots and reploids. If only Protoman had seen the brave efforts of the Mercenaries who fought against machine
and won
Where is this?
I can picture Protoman coming out of the rubble in slow motion until he is perfectly framed in the shot.
Contrary to popular belief, if you ignore a problem for long enough, it does not go away!
Unless that problem is eating, drinking, or breathing.
In which case, ONE problem will be gone at least.
The problem of living?
Still hit hard years later.
Rise and shine, Snake.
And here we reach the track in the album than never fails to bring tiers to my eyes.
"I've been there before; I've stood where you stand!"
This song is 10 years old. I checked
I dont think even Steak knew what he made when he let that video out.
"Rise and shine, Snake"
This has no right being as amazing as it is
Childhood is idolizing Breaking Out. Adulthood is realizing The Stand makes more sense.
Ouch...
Soon you realize how important both are. The prismatic fantasy of breaking out, and the dark pessimism of the stand are not opposites, but complimentary to each other
there might be a day when this album doesnt make me cry, but it sure isnt today
Here 10 years later still listening to all of Act 1

He indirectly killed Grey Fox.
+John Carter nah man he did nothing wrong
IcaraelTheWanderer He is not the Break Man.
He came before, he's the Proto Man.

When I was younger, always skipped this one to get to Sons of Fate faster. That was a mistake. This is my new favorite.

We've given everything we can. THERE ARE NO HEROES LEFT IN MAN!
My teacher loves rock such as zz top and iron maiden and i showed him this. He was amazed and told me i've got a great taste in music.

Rock music is characterized specifically by being relatively fast and punchy with electric guitars.
@@buttrockman4578 true but I can easily see classic rock band that like bands such as white snake enjoying this as well. Not saying they are the same but just that they aren't super far away imo
@@pantsoverp8849 the comment you are replying to was part of an argument that got deleted and i dont even fully remember the context of, so i dont really have a response for you.
They dont want to chang this. They don't want a hero. They just want a martyr. A statue to raise. I've given everything I can. There are no heroes left in man. bro was cooookingggggg. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Gotta love how Protoman's voice becomes increasingly inhuman throughout the song.
Best song on the album.
Just realized I've listened to this song 7 times in a row without getting sick of it... jeez.
Personally I think this is my favorite song on the entire album. I just love the power behind it.
I’m here because “Metal Gear Solid 4 was a Mistake”
This song is so damn awesome, and so very tragic
This song inspires me to do the best I can and helped me realize what I need to do
Who's here for the 3h long Metal Gear 4 analysis?
I was here from "hipster please" in 2011, but Steak brought me back, and I want to hug him for it.
Same, I play videogames all the time, but never got to Megaman. It is on top of my list of games to play now, I am starting it tonight. Protomen is the perfect 'ad' for the game.
I only heard about this band about a week and a half ago. This has since become one of my favorite songs.
Just beautiful....
Wily found a loophole: There will be light as long as the darkness "stays until the sun is set". The darkness was removed. Then it came back. Damn these technicalities.
So beautiful..
Still great
It is. It depicts Wily's rise to power and the relationship between him and light before he took control.
One of my favorite songs of all time
This song is so awesome. I've just sat here and listened to it 5 times in a row drinking my bourbon and coke.
love this song!!
you sir have earned my respect
the weird thing is, when we listen we are quick to denounce humanity with it's flaws but the depressing thing is, We are humans we are part of humanity, the cowardly humans who'll put faith in that that's not us.
"humans only think for them selfs they are a selfs race that stands for good or evil which ever happened to be most convenient for them at the time"-???
"that's why...! .. its a beautiful thing when everyone comes together as one. at times they will help each other console each other and compete against each other at times even fight and hurt each other...
but when it really matters they will band together stand together!! and that's why I most fight for them and be prepared to die for them

Can someone help me out with the Break Man references? I'm not getting it. But then I haven't heard anything of Act III except for the Hold Back The Night preview.
Break man is the Japanese name for protoman
*****
Ah. Thank you for clarifying that one.

Liquid!
My guess is Wily took what he could of him (even if pieces) and tried to replicate him the best he could. Possibly his robots were able to "scan" him before killing him off so he could do what he could to rebuild him. From there, it was just a matter of simply getting a point across Proto's mind that he was fighting for the wrong side.
is it just me, or does this sound like something that would come out of bad speakers?
And no. It's not because i'm listening to this on bad speakers.
GAGFEST2000 its raw and unpolished, somewhat on purpose. it's perfect for an 80s esque dystopian retro-future
You mean a grungy tone, in a respect you're exactly right
The band had just come out of music school when they made this album and they wanted a "post apocalyptic" sound that they achieved by deliberately going against everything they learned about recording sound well.
If that's true, that's very interesting. Either way, 5 years later and I do still love this song and how it sounds.
You need to stand by your heroes, for many times no one else will.
MCPIG THEME, THE MCGOAT
JOJO FINAL VILLAIN STAND NAME LEAKED
+Just a youtube commenter I think I might get the joke.
if they hand a stand called The Protomen...
@@toppedherburger I mean it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility because they have named Stands after bands
This is Act 1 peaking folks.
The greatest hero of man
mankind, those living in this city, they had every reason to stay downtrodden. the diabolical schemes of Wily kept them in a malaise, and eliminated anyone who might rise up against him. and yet, a hero still arose. from this oppressive bog of a city, a hero arose. his name was Joe. he lost, yes, but not for lack of heroism or will, but because Wily was one step ahead.
and yet, you, Protoman, the man who was designed to be a hero, the one who had every advantage Light could give you, the one who not only failed, but became the very thing you swore to destroy, you DARE to lecture Humanity about their failure to produce heroes.
you have no moral high ground here. you were never really a hero. a hero is one who fights even when he knows he is the only one left standing.
Nice Analysis
@@courierbilly
and what could they have done? its really easy to sit on your high horse and say they should have done "something" but what the fuck could they have done?
explain to me exactly what they were supposed to do, and then explain to me a bunch of oppressed downtrodden people living day by day were supposed figure out and organize an effective rebellion in a city where a seemingly invincible regime of robot masters ruthlessly crush anyone who steps out of line?
they needed a hero not because of apathy but because of lack of ability. even Joe struggled against a single assassin with a knife. to call that apathy is akin to telling the starving masses to eat cake.
@@courierbilly
but despite everything i have said, despite all the countless issues that contribute to their continued oppression, this will end eventually.
there will be more heroes, better heroes. human heroes. humanity always finds a way, eventually.
no regime, no matter how invincible, lasts forever.
there will always be heroes left in man.
I found a great song, thanks Pachinko.
I think the fact rhat its about megaman triggers nostalgia and the fact that the story is relevant brings up the feels
@oreov12 Holy hell that made my night
in the animatics i saw him meet lights eyes same with the descriptive one I think hes also telling this to Light who in his own way did fight wily, and has paid dearly for it, that they have done all they should have to do to fight
I just came here to listen to a good song, then i saw that would never happen, because there's a war going on in the comments. Really guys, appreciate the damn music!
Yeah, that was what happened. It is in the lyrics for Funeral for a Son. It does mention that Doctor Light was about to explain the truth about Protoman to Megaman.
Both Wily and Light are robotics geniuses, so it would make sense that Wily just took the scrap heap that used to be Protoman and rebuilt him.
Dr. Light is doing the monologue at the beginning and it suggests that he knew

Keep the fires burning.
