this song made me realize what it means to be so hopeless that you come back around to hoping for something
This and Breaking Out are 2 of the most inspiring songs I know. They give me hope.
Sometimes you just gotta Fuck It We Ball through the highs and the lows
"There's worse things than death here, there's loss and there's silence and sadness"
"I WILL NOT BE TOLD WHERE TO STAND! I WILL NOT BE TOLD WHAT TO SAY!"
Not by any man or machine, not my anyone tonight!
Gonna have to do better then fear!
gonna have to step out from the shadows and fight!
And when they see your face again, they will know what it means to have fear dragged out into the light!
Drag it out!
It’s 2021. I know a total of zero things about Megaman and being told this album is about Megaman was a total kick in the gut. I was so enthralled by the story and and seeing it’s Megaman isn’t bad at all, it’s just bonkers and now I sound like an absolute madman trying to get people to listen to it. “Yes it’s about Megaman- no, no I don’t know anything about Megaman either you don’t have to- where are you going?”
No explanation can really do the albums justice, so "it's a love story"?
Listening to Light Up the Night the first time I thought Tom and Joe were together lmao, but going through the album all the way reading the notes on genius lyrics is a great experience lol
I always quoted a note left in the comments: "Its like a megaman rock opera, but good"
“Yes it’s about Megaman- no, no I don’t know anything about Megaman either you don’t have to- where are you going?”
I see you went to the same school of persuasion that I did.
This song is so visual, you can see Joe and the Robot driving neck to neck, before finally standing off, you can see Joe try to fight this machine, see him ready to go down fighting, and him defeating it with the help of light.
Damn. I always imagined him walking down a road and realizing he's being watched and stopping then calling out the robot and after a long fight he kills the robot with it's own weapon and meets dr light
In the song notes, the Sniper's ACTIVELY keeping pace with Joe's motorbike.
Which is arguably more visceral, and far more terrifying.
''You gonna have to do better than Fear!''
Epic
This band and these albums are so goddamn amazing, but I have the hardest time explaining them to people without sounding like a crazy person. "IT'S A MEGAMAN ROCK OPERA! BUT NOT LAME!? JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN."
Haha, lord. I have the same problem!
I quoted you word by word....... It did not work
gf introduced me to them about 7 years ago, saw them live 4 times. i'd have to say, definitely love them!
"What was her name?"
- Doesn't matter. *NOW LISTEN!*
@@rakiniishu405 i hope you put a ring on her finger, she sounds like a legend
It just hit me that you can kind of hear the same tune as The Hounds in this, just with different instruments. Considering that The Hounds is about how Wily used fear and lies to take over a city that's already going to hell, and this may well be the beginning of the end for his rule (a very long end, and possibly one for the city as a whole, but and end nonetheless), that's fucking brilliant.
Breaking Out - Keep Quiet - Light Up the Night is a _perfect triad_
Truer words have never been spoken
@@ButterflyColors "ur ghey" has something to say
@@brovid-19 "no u" would like a word
That's exactly what this city told me.
Absolutely!
Okay, okay. It didn't happen over night, but the protomen are now my favorite band. And by a mile. Had to give it a few listens, but I can't stop loving these guys. amazing. Act 3 please.
Man it’s been 11 years since your comment. I gotta know, are they still your favourite band? 2011 was a waaaaaaay different time, so I am super curious
@AshTheFlash100 I was expecting Act 3 eleven years ago too. And i thought it was going to come soon.
Oh, dear innoncence...
@@ashtheflash1005 we are all waiting for it, i think it will came with half life 3
@@JeshuaMorbus Thankfully they've been touring a lot recently and have commented about work on it being delayed last year because of covid so maybe there's a chance of it happening soon
@@criticaldrive97 Well, at least they still sing decently (except when they cover Queen... it's sad, but good ol' Freddy is hard to emulate XD).
Gods almighty. I haven't heard a singer so good in YEARS. YEARS!
Between Protoman, Megaman, and Joe, only Joe was a true hero.
Joe was only human, but he was free.
Even when no one would stand with him, even when no one would fight with him, Joe refused to submit.
Such a man has only two options: Absolute victory, or death. Proto and Mega had neither.
we still got act 3 to go, Megaman will pull though!
...
Whos Joe?
J.Yossarian Go to the wiki, learn the album's story.
The character singing Breaking Out, Keep Quiet, and parts of Light Up the Night. The Protomen have story notes with their lyrics that cover the plot that's not sung about
+Original Narrator I tried looking at the wiki, but I didn't find much. Any info you can share?
Impressive. Way to reproduce that 80's sound and feel on this track. Bravo!
i think this is probably the best song on this album.
It's uncanny, this album contains some of the only songs that I will drop everything just to sing along/move to the music. I can't wait for Act III
6 years later, we're still waiting
@@samcrump7460 Try 11. But its coming. You can find a few songs on UA-cam if you search us act 3 and they are fucking sick.
@@kyong-jin-pool-legend I know it’s quite late, but do you know if it’s still in progress?
@@johnwegrzynek9342 Yes, they have released 3 singles this far that sopposedly will be in the album. This City Made Us, Hold Back the Night and The Fight (their latest)
@@Maxpaximus That's awesome! I thought it was over
the songs from act 2 are basically from every 80's movie ever PERIOD.
Not to say they are Generic, Which they are most certainly not, it's just that they borrow bits and pieces of inspiration from all over the place.
With the new Megaman game coming out, I really hope people remember about The Protomen and give them another listen.
You never forget about The Protomen dude
That's exactly what I've been doing, and these songs have only gotten better with age.
I play their songs on guitar regularly every few days and have been doing that.. FOR YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAARS NOW!
.. sorry, had to do it.
Cheers from Germany ;)
Surprise, there's another reason to remember them now
Here we are
If you don't buy both acts of The Protomen, you have no right to call your music collection complete.
That's a very good point.
Did you comment on your own dang comment?
@@djr928 Based. I mean he's not wrong after all
There should be a new law imposed on the people about that
@@djr928 Nah I was replying to someone else who deleted their comment, I think
Amazing how they can take something like the plot of Megaman and turn into into a rock opera that makes you feel more emotions and paints a picture better than movies you’ll see in theatres.
I wasn't aware these guys existed until I watched VGHS. I've been hooked since then.
Saw them in concert last night at PAX. Third time seeing them this year. They absolutely murder, every single time. It's unreal.
I will get tired of 80's synth tom rolls. I have no idea why, but there's something so amazing about them.
Personally, it was something of the inverse for me. I saw Protoman as a manifestation of Light's ego, desire for peace and rage at Wily. As such, I figured Protoman was the young Light. Then when he dies, Megaman is built in a fit of sorrow, fear and self-sacrifice, the same sacrifice world Joe was raised in. If Joe was Protoman, I wouldn't particularly fit with 'The Stand (Man or Machine)', because that song really emphasizes how Protoman doesn't believe in humanity, while Mega/Joe still does.
yeah i always kind of figured that under his helmet protoman looks like joe. mega just looks like young light
Wow. In most videos, you get people bitching that they don't want to hear intellectuals analyze songs and their philosophic meaning. Your comment is refreshing, thank you.
With regard to the Protomen, they are heroic and talented, and the heroism is not the same altruistic propaganda we are told to admire. Their heroism is about real courage, conviction, individualism, and sincere pride.
"I WILL NOT BE TOLD WHAT TO SAY!!!!"
Chills everytime.
I imagine that Protoman has more than a bit of Joe in him, to be completely fair. I read somewhere that the Sniper Joes were named so by Dr. Wily after (spoiler) the real Joe died, just so Wily could laugh at Dr. Light's mortified face. And then Dr. Light took that Joe's designs and built Protoman with them, which is confirmed in Protomen canon (though it's the inverse in Megaman canon). So, in a way, Protoman can be interpreted as Joe.
This is why I always keep on coming back to listen to this song.
Honestly surprised no one has made an 8-bit rendition of this yet. >.> It would sound SOOO amazing.
at the end of the song the robot sings back the chorus of the song to Joe, most look at this thinking that the robot is just mocking Joe, but what if it agrees? what if it has something worse than death to fear from Wiley?
+jarrod nash I never thought too much about that part of the song but I fucking love this interpretation
Well- Joe becomes protoman in the end- so isn't that a bit of foreshadowing?
+sebastianwillows I'm pretty sure Joe just was the inspiration for proto, not actually him. Unless that is what you meant
Ehh... Sounds cool except Protoman and Megaman are the only robots with free will and actual personalities. The assassin was part of the first line of robots who are just mindless workers.
Yeah, but it's also implied the Sniper's been around for YEARS, and it clearly needs to be able to learn to some extent to be as long-lived as it is considering it was able to subdue an entire city alone no matter who it singled out.
It's also stated to have preferences in its weaponry, and that the main reason it failed is because it wanted to make things personal and use its knife to kill Joe, which let him use its own blaster to break the grapple.
What truly makes this track so powerful thematically is the classic mega man guitar riff that pervades the entire run time
Scary, but this song takes on new life when we take into account how it applies to cities and events like the Hong Kong Protests.
It's intereesting what shows up on the youtube feeds if you type "keep quiet"
Zellig Trueee for me it’s Indian Videos and a documentary trailer lool
Just more songs for me. From Future and someone else.
2020 and I am not quiet!!
This city's been burning 4 years now
I love how smooth the transitions some of their songs have.
This song has never been more relevant than it is now
Its going to get even worse
Hate to break it to ya bud.
Peace will only intensify
OMG!!!!!! This music made my day!!! I thank my government for not playing this music in the public radios. Because otherwise people would frankly jump out of their cars and dance! =DDDDD Thanks for creating this piece of art! Cheers from Sweden and keep up the good work!
First time I listened to this with headphones... Dear god, the chills!
don't know how I stumbled on these guys or what they're from, but they sound fantastic
i think ur mom is fantastic...!
So do I, she really is a sweet person. :)
+Blue Rascal hehe megaman is fantastic my friend
TH3C4NN4BL3C0W they are the proto men from Nashville Tennessee
Love that chorus!
Congrats Protomen, this song is awesome for one. Secondly, y'all made it on Rock Band 4, props.
my favourite Protomen song
I've seen your face in the shadows
I've seen your face in the places I wasn't meant to be
I've heard them whisper about you
I've heard the men in the bars
And I've seen the women lock their doors at night
Lock your doors tonight
They say your eyes are on fire
They say you'd kill a man for walking the wrong side of the line
Wrong side of the line
But men, they say a lot of foolish things
And in the end the only words I can find to believe in are mine
They say:
This city, she's been dead for years now
For years now
So death is not something that scares me
That scares me
There's worse things than death here
They told me
(Keep quiet)
I will not be told where to stand!
I will not be told what to say!
Not by man or machine!
Not by you, not by anyone tonight!
You're gonna have to do better than fear!
You're gonna have to step out of the shadows and fight!
And when they see your face again
They will know what it means to have fear dragged out into the light
Drag it out!
They say:
This city, she's been dead for years now
For years now
So death is not something, not something that scares me
That scares me
So come on!
Come on!
Step into the light!
This city, she's been dead for years now
For years now
So death is not something that scares me
That scares me
There's worse things
Than death here
There's loss and there's silence and sadness
So come on
Come on!
Just open your mouths and revive it
Ooh, aaah
Ooh, aaah
Ooh, aaah
Just open your mouths and revive it!
I wish this song didn’t feel so relevant to the times we are living in.
The entire album feels that way, I just wish I didn't identify with 'Light Up The Night'
As a kid I identified with "light up the night"
As an adult it's "the stand"
We will grow beards in a day!
Man would cower at the sight.
so 80s - so lovely - so great! :)
God I fucking love this song
Not as such. In the Megaman games, Sniper Joe was the name of a mass-production version of Protoman. Here, it's the reverse - Protoman's design was inspired by Joe's helmet, and in turn by the robot he took it from, which itself seems to be based on the Sniper Joe robot from the games (one red eye).
what the hell is this ? why i 've just discoverd this .thanks youtube suggestions
playing that opening riff on guitar is so goddamn satisfying ... :D
Nostalgia and VGHS
For years now. For years now.
I just found out about Protomen (this is the first track I hear from them), and this is amazing.
It has this weird feeling I can't describe, it feels familiar and new at the same time. Too bad they're not touring in Europe, I read the live performance were really worth it. I wish their CDs were available in my country, not just some used import overpriced copies :/
The Protomen are a group that has made a series of songs as a spinoff storyline involving Dr. Light and Dr. Wily. All within a rock-opera of sorts. Acts 1 and 2 are done, Act 3 is coming soon-ish.
"5 years ago" still no Act III :V
omg love the 80s vibe. great song man !
i love it ! ♥
LincolnLogsv2 They waited so long for this day, someone to take peach fuzz away. No son would ever have to say "My father's beard was really lame".
Dr. Wily was merely a tool. The true evil here is the primordial entity known only as The Barber, who has existed since the dawn of mankind and wants nothing more than for man to turn against his beard and take a razor to his chin. Every time a man shaves, The Barber wins. Dr. Light knew what he was doing. It's why he, as the only man with a beard, was the only one in the city who wasn't under Wily's control... His one mistake:
Forgetting to give his sons a beard.
CoriSparx Yes... Yes, of course! How could we have all been so blind! The answer... It's here! *brings out Eddie with a full beard* THIS IS OUR SAVIOR!!!
Hurry we must ride and warn Gandalf of the threat!
XD
This is the best song in the album, in my opinion.
Does anyone know the video of an animated Thom Yorke and bear doing a dance off to this song? There's also one that the same guy where they dance to Light Up The Night.
I've been searching for so long and now I'm resorting to begging in the comment section, please help me.
Hell yeah! A lot of freddiew works have molded my taste of music, in the best way possible.
If you check out the songs lyrics in lyricswikia, you'll find the... stage directions? which aren't sung and are quite relevant in many cases. In the case of LightingUpTheNight's videos, you have a link in every description already, so you don't even have to look it up.
This song is f@#king amazing!
I'm gonna call it here that the house Joe used to live in is where Megaman has been living since Act I (and it's the lab/home from the Megaman games)
This sounds like it just came out of an 80's movie.
This + Hobo With A Shotgun = such epic win.
Anyone else notice that if the woman on the album cover stood up straight she'd be like 7 feet tall?
She'd certainly be taller than Light. I guess it's the heels
Algobump!
Very relevant.
seriously you dont have to be big to be a bad ass. a little heart and a little bravery go a long way. joe is the fuckin man!!!
I find it way easier to work/study listening to the Protomen. Hell, I'm doing it right now. Power through the code.
I spoke a little bit too soon - the digital version is available, but the physical version (that I personnaly prefer when it comes to things I like, and is strongly recommended "for the complete experience") can't be found on Amazon (non-US version).
I'll see if the official website shop ships to europe for a good price.
You should check the full album, even more if you are into megaman, the story is fucking great.
goo ga da doo ga da doo!!!! Love it!
So 80s bruh
so was mega man
lol
Video game high school❤
Y'know some of the lyrics really reflect where I am in life at the moment. I'm trying to get a fly out of my room.
Edit as of a week later: Can confirm it stepped out of the shadows to fight, though I had to light up the night to get it to leave. Then another came for vengeance.
And now thay are going to Make the stand (man or machine) and if they fail, they'd have a due vendetta.
If only they were built to last.
Whose shadow is that on top of the building to the right?
+Comical Probably the robot that killed Emily.
+PatsPCs Joe's already there on his motorcycle, though. Plus the shadow is a pretty imposing figure; I'd say it's most likely the robot as well.
probably Wily's assassin, considering its standing over a monitor projecting Wily's face
Whoa whoa whoa. Wait. If the robot was saying the words Joe spoke at the end of the song, it can mean two things: one, it was mocking him for thinking those things, or an even more frightening thing: it was evolving, becoming like Joe, thinking like him, recognizing him as a worthy foe, and incorporating his likeness into itself: it had become a "Sniper Joe."
Anyone know who the little guy on top of the giant Wily screen is meant to be? My current guess is the assassin but I'm not too sure.
It's the robot that sniper joe got the gun from. The bot with red eyes that did in emily
This group reminded me of the tunes from Kenny Loggins. Similar kinda groove to their songs
This song rocks. The ultimate cry of independence.
THEY SAY
(This city)
THIS CITY
(She's been dead)
SHE'S BEEN DEAD FOR YEARS NOW
(For years now)
FOR YEARS NOW
(For years now)
SO DEATH IS
(So death is)
NOT SOMETHING
(Not something)
NOT SOMETHING THAT SCARES ME
(That scares me)
THAT SCARES ME
(That scares me)
THERE'S WORSE THINGS
(There's worse things)
THAN DEATH HERE
(Than death here)
THEY TOLD ME
(Keep quiet)
Pencil drumming is what gets me.

@raymonmorris7 Not exactly... Joe is actually the one singing this. You would never know unless you read the lyrics since Light and Joe have the same singer. Unless you have read the lyrics, in which case I must be confused about what you were saying there. Anyway this song is amazing.
Sci-Fi fiction or social-political commentary?
Not sure any more.
Why not both?
The former is usually the latter.
Welcome to cyberpunk dystopias

in the end of the song with the robot saying shes been dead for years now, i wonder if it is still a little hung up over emily, or does it realize that the city is dead
@steakwithsalt I actually think the Joe character and the Light character sound different. I don't want to start this whole big thing, but i believe the singer does a good job of showing the difference between two characters. either way, I love this band and can't wait for the next cd.
People like to complain that the humans at the end of Act I wouldn't have stood a chance against Wily's robots, or that attacking them would be silly. They oughta take lessons from Joe.
@PNhooligan
I came when I heard this part. Then read along the lyrics. Then came again harder.
I love how people just are listening to this only because of Video Game High School, Actually it saddens me, because they are just now hearing it. AND SHUT UP ABOUT VGHS ALREADY.
Don't be bitter about HOW they discovered this. Be glad they found it somehow in the first place. Traffic for their music has to start somewhere.
GreenTengu97
Really I just hate that there just saying stuff like "Video Game High School!" and only that.
GamersBlogX Ok
GreenTengu97 I found this on some random playlist
I found the protomen through the megas
They ignorantly dismissed it because of what they thought it sounded like, rather than considering it for what it is. It's also out of context on its own, as it's part of a much larger rock opera.
I'm feeling like a twelfth level pastry-master. Anyone else?
Oh Brian :D
+The Amazing Boy What can I say? VGHS is my all-time, no doubt, favorite show. I commonly reference it. Like when I'm at Taco Bell, I'll randomly say, "Nothin like a third taco, ya feel me?"

@TheDominicmacabre That's right, I forgot about that! Awesome moment. Anyway I actually agree with you that Joe and Light sound different, but a friend of mine still didn't even realize Joe existed.
It's still a fucking pain sifting through here for some actual comments instead of fucking drones.
