Incredible to say the "Liszt"s"... you again outplayed yourself Michiel...could listen to this forever as it catapults you through deep valleys and swindling heights. It comforts you through it all and leaves no space of want ... all is in there ... live in the ever wondering thought as if there's much more that could ever come... and never keep for later ... it is the Now or Never! Thanks for this Masterpiece....
Thrilling! This is one of the most individual yet wholly successful recordings of this piece that I've yet heard. Really a remarkable interpretation and one I will listen to again and again. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Damn! For me, this is one of the all time great recordings of this masterpiece, without hyperbole. Already at the very beginning you keep close to Liszt's pedal directions (unlike 95% of other pianists) and it produces an amazing sound. (To be fair to the other 95% - the first page of this waltz is one of the greatest intros in music history and sounds great even when played with left pedal & staccato.:) The energy of the fast dance section is perfect but what is completely unique for me is the beginning of the dreamy-sensual middle section, which you manage to perform as an actual waltz - this is something I have never really got from other pianists. Also fantastic are the little whimsical pianissimo presto episodes within the slow section - your trills are both astounding for their speed and dynamics (most other pianists can do either presto or pianissimo - you manage both). The rest of the performance is great too, the few bass octavas here and there are a welcome addition I think, and the cadenza is entirely Lisztian, feels completely organic. Thanks again for your music! Really, really special interpretation. (Die Nächtliche Zug or Dante Sonata next? Scherzo und Marsch perhaps? Or the other three Mephisto Waltzes?:) All the best!
@Gergely Kiss Hey, thanks for listening and your comment! For the moment I will practice and hopefully perform Schumann Waldszenen (I have recorded Kreisleriana on UT) Chopin Nocturnes and Widmung. Maybe next summer I will check for other Liszt. Dante is no option because Volodos is the nec plus ultra and technically it us much harder for me. For Mephisto: I actually have alot of difficulties with thrills. My body is f#cked and I have to stand like Keith Jarrett in order to thrill well. Hopefully a good kine osteo specialist can help me. I have changed my technique completely and use weight and rotation only. Have a great day

(Sorry about pestering you with Liszt-ideas - I'm a bit of a Liszt-nut, so whenever I find a pianist who can do true justice to his music I wish they would perform as many of his works as possible.:) Sorry to hear about your physical troubles, I hope you'll find a physiotherapist who can help you - maybe try someone who regularly works with athletes/gymnasts. A different perspective might be beneficial, who knows. All the best!

la première fois que j'ai eu affaire à Michiel DEMAREY, c'était dans la rubrique ''commentaires'' d'un enregistrement de l'andante spianato, introduisant la grand polonaise brillante de Chopin, oeuvres interprétées ce jour-là par Kate LIU: il se plaignait, si je me souviens bien, du manque d'émotion et de dynamismes chez les pianistes de cette nouvelle génération, tout en concédant, que ponctuellement, cette interprétation de Kate LIU était intéressante; dans l'espoir de trouver un point d'accord avec lui je lui citais les interprétations de Kate LIU et de Khatia BUNIATISHVILI , très différentes, de la même ballade N° 4 de Chopin comme des preuves flagrantes des qualités multiples de cette génération de musiciennes. Par provocation, il me conseillait alors d'écouter ses enregistrement personnels sur you tube, ce que j'ai fait sans me départir d'un certaine condescendance. À ma stupéfaction, je suis tombé sur un travail de haut niveau, qu'on peut écouter, et ré-écouter avec grand plaisir...
Je suis en train d'enregistrer 3 pieces: Chopin Balade 4 Valse op. 64. nr 2 et Schumann Arabeske. Apres ça, c'est fini. La Romance est mort... aucun comprends la vérité du musique. Que Liszt, Chopin et Schumann dit. La liberté, l'humeur comme Louis de Funes mais mieux, du bon vin, la DOULEUR, jouer des fausse notes PAS parfaite parce-que la pianiste donne sa VIE!!!! non le publique prefere une saloppe comme Wang qui a rien a dire ou un Matsuev qui est narcist ou un Sokolov qui pense il joue avec coeur... Encule votre Steinway!!!
Zeer smaakvol gespeeld met oog voor details. Prachtig evenwicht tussen je grote techniek en je uitvoering... muziek op de eerste plaats!!!!De langzame delen vind ik een beetje te expressief maar dat is smaak natuurlijk... Ik heb hem vroeger ook "plat" gespeeld en ken de gevaarlijke plaatsjes. Leuke toevoegingen en zeer verantwoord... haast beter dan het origineel...zeer knap... en verdomd goed klinkende piano! Dat geeft ook inspiratie! Ik heb vaak op de piano van cziffra gespeeld en dat was een orkest op zich... noodzakelijk om je eigen interpretatieve ideeën tot uiting te brengen...
oh enorm bedankt voor je commentaar, doet me enorm deugd! Mephisto was vroeger mijn bijnaam op conservatorium haha maar toen speelde ik het ook plat en begreep de inhoud nog niet. De piano van Cziffra, ben jaloers! De piano is enorm belangrijk, het moet klikken, toonvormen met gemak, kleurpallet en groot dynamisch bereik en voor mij is een licht klavier zeer belangrijk want heb heel wat fysieke beperkingen. Mijn laatste concert in Antwerpen was een ramp: ern witte Samick met plastiekerig gevoel toetsen en enorm harde discant. Met links trillen bijvoorbeeld lukt zelden door spierblokkages (ik neem dus vaak rechts over wanneer het kan).
