- First Puppy Bath - Tips to Make It A Positive Experience // You have a new puppy and it’s time to give your first puppy bath. Bathing a puppy can either be a good or bad experience. Grooming a puppy at home can be positive with a few tips to help your puppy overcome their fear. Giving a puppy a bath should include shampoo, a tub restraint, towels, and a few other items I’ll cover in this week’s video. If you want to know how to give your puppy a bath without them freaking out or how to make your dog like a bath, be sure to watch how we train a puppy to overcome their fear of water and the dryer noises too.

@@maxineb.3789 I use all-natural peanut butter from my grocery store. Just be sure you don't give your puppy peanut butter with Xylitol in it.

I went through same experience; I would actually lay in bed and wonder: "what have I done", but these videos which I watch religously have really saved our relationship :) videos are great
It went well. They love the lick pad and tolerate the drier. I have taken them to be groomed twice - the first for a mini intro groom and the second for a full groom. The groomer said she would give the full groom a try but could not guarantee they would tolerate it due to their age. She called when they were done and when I got there she said..."I don't know what you are doing but they were amazing - keep it up!" It is all thanks to you for this video. I find all of the training very helpful and tell everyone about you in Chicago.
Wow never thought about desensitizing them before grooming. Makes so much sense. ot sure how it never came to mind on how to make the experience less stressful by doing a little training first. Good thing I havent gotten my pup yet. Still much research to go

The first day I had my puppy, he’d cry when I’d leave him so I brought him in the bathroom so I could take a shower. He came right in and joined me. It was obviously unplanned but worked out because it was his decision 💕

I really wish I would’ve found this video before I attempted the bath! My Yorkie was so aggressive, I didn’t even know he had that much aggression in him! He was growling, barking, and even bit me a few times! All I could do was try to reassure him that it was alright, and he was doing good, and try to get done as quickly as humanly possible 😂 I was a little scared if I’m just being honest. I learned so much in this video. Thank you

I'm watching this after I make my two puppies bath for the first time. Well my puppies loves me more than anything so they allowed me to make them bath. I rescued them from the street , they're my kids not my pets . I've them for more than 1 months . I love the way they wags their tails and grabs me, taps my leg with their paws.

Omg, the flea comb around eyes.. ..I’ve got major phobia that hurting my tiny babies . Looks like it’s scraping or can scratch those delicate, tiny eyeballs so easy 😞 so I just do good ol baby wipes or cotton ball 😆 anyway, I so glad I found this helpful channel 🤗 thank u !!!

Hello Michelle!! My vet actually told me not to use cotton because the fibers could get stuck inside the ears causing infection. She recommended to use gauze instead ☺️

Do you recommend the use of waterless shampoo is between? Any specific one that you would recommend for short hair (chihuahua) puppy? Thank you!
I persoanlly don't recommend waterless shampoos for use on a regular basis. The build up can cause skin irritation. When I ran my grooming shop we had quite a few dogs come in caked in dry shampoo. The poor dogs started to get itchy from all the powder.

Applesauce, baby food like a peas and beans mix or a baby food meat like turkey
Try liverwurst, never had a dog that didn’t love it. I use it when or if my dogs need medication.
I think I need to watch this at least 3 more times before I try my puppy 1st bath, I’m kinda nervous.
Watch it as many times as you need to. Just remember- starting the desensitization training long before the first bath will be best! You've got this!
U should try to mix your shampoo with a little water it makes it easier to spread

It would be better to just wipe him down with a wet towel. Save the bath for later, when you've had some time to desensitize the process and the tools you'll be using.

Dogs can have peanut butter but you have to make sure it's the all natural kind with NO artificial sugar (best if the only ingredient is peanuts). Artificial sugar like xylitol is toxic to dogs.
Hi! Im getting a puppy tommorow, a yorkiepoo! Im really excited, but I'm not sure when I would have to start bathing her. She isnt 8 weeks old yet, and I will be recieving it from my neighbors since their dog had puppies! So, theyre very young! At what age would I need to start bathing her? And how often would the baths need to be?
Dogs have a different PH balance than humans do so it’s important to avoid over bathing them. Most dogs can be bathed every 4-6 weeks, and some can go 8 weeks in between baths. Don't do her first bath until you've had a chance to desensitize the process with her and she feels positive or neutral about it. We don't want to push her too far too fast and make bath time a negative experience for life.

So, I'm getting a puppy this Sunday. Super long hair and a really flat face (basically a walking fluff ball in a literal sense). This video makes me feel better about future baths, but I am sure they are still going to be a long process with how much hair he has. I have been watching your videos over and over again cause I am super nervous. My family does not raise their dogs like I am going to so it is gonna be weird. My puppy is 4 months old and she hates baths! She is a Min Pin so she has stand up ears and it is a battle to wash her ears. I put my hand so that I can hold down her ears over her ear canals but she is a major wiggle worm. In general she just does not like it. Would it help to give her a bath more often? Right now in the two months that I have owned her I have given her two baths.
It could be your tub set up or that she just hates to have water near her head. I would use a washcloth around her head so the water from the sprayer doesn't set her off.
The video was good, but maybe a recommendation to check some specifics on grooming different unusual breeds. For example you would never brush a Komondor (30 years experience) and you don't blow dry a Pumi (2 months experience) in both cases you would be destroying the coat.

Whether you've got a tub or a stand-up shower, it will be important to desensitize your pup to the water before attempting to bathe them. You'll want to create a positive association with the shower before they get wet like we explain in the video.
Once you're ready to get your pup in the shower, turn the shower head away from your pup so it's just spraying on the wall to gauge their reaction. Then you can slowly move the shower head closer to your pup and let them get wet.
Once you're sure your puppy will be able to be bathed at home, keep the shower head turned to one side so your pup can have a place to stand without getting rained on while you scrub them down. When you're ready to rinse, use a plastic bucket or bowl to catch the falling water and gently pour it over your pup. You may have to rinse a few times using this method, but it will ultimately help your pup have a calm and gentle experience. Hope this helps, and let us know how it goes!

How to see if the dog is allergic to shampoo or not? Thank you for replying to our comments♡♡
If you're worried about the shampoo you can start with something that is has limited ingredients or is made for dogs with sensitive skin. Just like with humans, unless you know the known allergies, there's no real way to know unless you use the product and have the reaction. You can always test on a small area and wait a few days to see if there is a reaction or not.

Mine issue is my puppy is so small he can’t have that many treats as he is so small and doesn’t eat much at the time.
You can use his kibble for training. Or some of the moist treats are easy to break into very small pieces.

If your dog is comfortable with water on or around his face you can use water to wash otherwise you may want to use a washcloth to wipe his face and eye goobers away.

Hi Michelle, my dog stinks. What to do to remove the stinks? aside from bathing, because i can bath him every hour, is there a DIY perfume that you can teach us. kindly please advise. thank you
We don't recommend masking "stink" with cologne. Remember your dog's sense of smell is about 40 times better than our own. This means putting a sent on them can be overwhelming for them and it really will only mask the "stink" for a short period of time. Oftentimes smell comes from what our dogs eat and of course not drying your dog thoroughly. A damp dog will smell stinky and musty. Also, a dog will never smell fresh and clean like we do when we step out of the shower. The oils from their skin, dander, and fur all contribute to their distinct smell. If you're concerned with your dog's odor speak to your vet. They may have overactive oil glands or another underlying medical issue that needs to be checked out.
