    It would be interesting to have a video on how to troubleshoot surface finish issues. Probably basic knowledge for machinists. But apart from a short job at a friend's lathe, my last lathe/mill experience was over 20 years ago in high school. And we probably never even covered that bit.
    What I do seem to know about it is that it's mostly angles (both cutting and relief), depth of cut and surface speeds. And making sure you're using a sharp tool and a properly supported work piece (i.e. no jitter). But I'm sure the story doesn't end there.

      Also thought I’d add , you normally can’t change direction in ‘X’ in a canned cycle (for example if you wanted to do an undercut ) if you are using a type 1 cycle , but you can in a type 2 , the only different is there is a X AND Z figure in the first line of the canned cycle e.g
      G71 U2.5 R0.2
      G71 P100 Q200 U0.25 W0.1 F0.25
      N100 G0 X27
      G0 Z2
      that would give type 1

      G71 P100 Q200 U0.25 W0.1 F0.25
      N100 G0 X27 Z2

    Tony, I just found your Chanel
    And I can say as a 40 year machinist
    You Da MAN!
    I love it!
    And as I am about to put together a new AVID cnc router
    So many of the things you have incorporated into your machine
    Had also been part of my thoughts 💭
    I have a small wood lathe that I am planning to set up just about like your 4th axis.
    Thanks for a great and informative set of videos (😆great editing!)
    And just so you know how I found you,
    Was watching FineWoodworking magazines group get together show and the guys on there said “Have you seen This old Tony “?
    They were right!
    Fantastic Chanel!

    3:08 What flavor are those chips anyway, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that color chip before. It doesn’t look like a normal flavor like salt and vinegar or nacho cheese; are you one of those weirdos that buys those oddball flavor chips like hamburger or something? Either way you must be into some weird potato chip brands, because those things look so sharp and crunchy that I don’t even know if they’re edible.

    Hey, This Young Tony, Clearpath has very high power servo motors with integrated electronics. It looks like it would be better option that your stepper. They are Integral hp series
    You should also wire error signal (if it had something like that) to your estop, so when you stall it, nothing will move.

    Ouch, awful little tool smash on that last clip, but still a great project that must have been!
    Might I suggest some kind of gearbox that could have a dedicated main spindle motor to drive the chuck for turning, while still having the existing stepper timed to the spindle that you may use for indexing? Some kind of solenoid controlled spindle brake too, Tony?

    One does admire your work and humour, and I think I have now watched all of your vids - very enjoyable. Now hmmm.?!? The concept is great but the performance is probably not as you were hoping? The stepper save for the trunnion and get a servo (now that merch is on offer £££), side mount ( you have space) and reduction gear it to main shaft, encoder shaft - you know what I mean. More expensive I know but you will be happier. :) This option can also allow you to add some removable mass to aid turning. Maybe even a brake! Hobby style disc bike caliper, air solenoid, aux M code combo. This will help with your arc backlash for 3+1. Turn-mill's are not easy to design so hats off for trying. ;) One phase at a time my friend.. Lastly, FEA your tool post I know you can do it, the offset design makes my toes curl. Anyway keep the adventure rolling, I love seeing hobbyist' make CNC's. :D

  • @DudleyToolwright
    @DudleyToolwright 5 років тому

    Very entertaining. If it makes you feel any better, cold rolled steel is very difficult to get a good finish on in any situation (in my very limited experience). The best finish to date for me was a vertical shear cutter. Still, it doesn't compare to metal that behaves well like 303 stainless. My 1.5 cents.

  • @BiggMo
    @BiggMo 6 років тому

    So....Tony (aka TOT) - maybe for us naïve beginners, what is it that’s affecting the finish? Speed? Feed rate? Runout? Tool deflection? Operator being a tool?
