Hi Myron! I’m so glad you covered this area. I was born and raised in Big Sky, just north/west of Yellowstone. I’ve had many great adventures exploring the surrounding mountain ranges. It’s been a pleasure watching you explore these areas.
21:21 The lahar deposits with massive volcano chunks embedded inside would have come from a long runout landslide. It's astonishing to see an entire mountainside move 20 to 30 miles away. The embedded blocks could have come from a slope failure high up on the Sunrise volcano's flank, giving the debris flow enough momentum to get that far.

Truly excellent, thank you. Volcanoes create such cool phenomena. Not far from me in Japan is a forest of massive 4000 year old trees that was buried by an adjacent active volcano. They were so well-preserved that when you enter the excavated area, it still smells like freshly-cut wood.

Really informative and entertaining video. My dad, Kermit Gustafson (who passed away back in 2001) was a professor of Geology and would take student on field trips to Yellowstone, the grand canyon and many other locations around the western US. Great insights! Thank you for the video. It somehow touches topics, which Nick Zentner had talked about recently in a mini series about pre-cascadian volcanism in Idaho and east of that. You have just awesome video footage in your shows!
I was about to post this as well. But will just bump it instead. I do think, however, this activity may be prior to what Nick was referring to. Maybe more associated with the event that created the Rockies?
Love listening to these. You are so informative. I've been to most of the places you talk about so your explanations really help. Also, with all the contention and misinformation in the news, it's restful to listen to someone sharing his love of nature. Thanks.

Thank you Myron and Elgin for a fantastic presentation. After exploring much of the NW, I have become addicted to the study of geology. I can see that Wyoming and Montana are exceptional! Your teaching style has a captivating cadence which helps envision the geologic process.
I have stood at the same “wall” you were on the north fork. We called it “The China Wall” when I was a lot younger living in Cody. I miss fishing the North Fork of Shoshone. Being a retired geologist… I can spend an eternity walking those mountains. The petrified forest of Cougar Pass is a sight I will never forget. 36 miles in on horseback NW from Dubois, WY. At least by pack trail. Stinking water Mountain in the upper Sunlight can be some treacherous hiking. Those massive volcanic Lahars in the Sunlight region, remind me of gigantic conglomerate rock formations. Heart Mountain is another interesting story. Thank you for bringing back the memories.

I love this content. I grew up in and around the area near granite peak. My late grandpa wrote a book on the mountains surrounding the alpine/east rosebud area. I've always been mesmerized by this specific mountain range. You definitely have a new subscriber and thank you for your service 🫡
Thanks for sharing!
what a soothing voice you have. I love the various tonal inflections as you so enthusiastically talk about geology.
Sometimes even though my computer is off and I'm awake, I can hear your soothing voice discussing something.WOW!
Some consider him the Bob Ross of geology. 😀
5 seconds in and I want all the knowledge this guy has
Mr. Cook thank you for your work I never miss your videos. Greeting from Greece.
Thanks for watching!
Always good seeing a new Myron video, the storytelling and cinematography is top class as always! Also those old exposed dykes really helps with understanding how the fissure eruptions currently happening in iceland look underground..
Thank you for sharing. (And thank you, Elgin, for looking after a national treasure as he investigates a national treasure.)
Hi Myron! I’m so glad you covered this area. I was born and raised in Big Sky, just north/west of Yellowstone. I’ve had many great adventures exploring the surrounding mountain ranges. It’s been a pleasure watching you explore these areas.
Thanks for sharing!
very informative and relaxing video! CAn't wait till part 2!
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to share your insights.
Myron in his candyland!! Thankful you choose to share your adventures and enthusiasm for our majestical earth!!
Safe travels
QUESTION: What type of drone are you flying?? Great shots

This sounds like such an amazing place to visit. I would love to see it some day. Do you know what the place is called? Thank you for sharing. 🗻🌳☺
@@Greye13Sanbe Azukihara Buried Forest.
Mt. Sanbe being the active volcano in question
@@旭球 Thank you so much for your reply. Even the name is intriguing. I definitely want to visit this 4000 year old buried forest. Thank you again and best wishes.
First vid I've seen on your channel. I love your format of showing the macro-level of geology by your drone footage to the pedestrian level with your hiking and diagrams to the micro-level of your microscopic stills. It helps me to appreciate the landscape not only for what it is, but for what it was and even what it is yet to become.
Awesome, thank you!
Really informative and entertaining video. My dad, Kermit Gustafson (who passed away back in 2001) was a professor of Geology and would take student on field trips to Yellowstone, the grand canyon and many other locations around the western US. He passed before I was able to really find my own interest in geology so I long felt I missed out on a lot of information I could have learned from him. Your video was a real pleasure to watch. I’d like to think my dad would be happy I found such value in your teaching.
Thanks a bunch!
we need more of your dads
@@myroncook the older I get them more I forgive the junk that was so upsetting for
Me as his child and the more I can be thankful for him
I love how you sketch something on your white board, explaining something, then show us the formation and we can see it. Amazing. Thanks!
Wow I am 58 and if I could have watched this back in school, I could have looked at things with so much more appreciation as I traveled everywhere. Sir you are a treasure, and I fully appreciate you for teaching us this stuff more than you know. Thank you from all my heart from NH USA.
Greetings from Australia. Myron, your a first class educator. Well appreciated.
Great insights! Thank you for the video. It somehow touches topics, which Nick Zentner had talked about recently in a mini series about pre-cascadian volcanism in Idaho and east of that. You have just awesome video footage in your shows!
I’d love to see Myron and Nick work together.
I was about to post this as well. But will just bump it instead. I do think, however, this activity may be prior to what Nick was referring to. Maybe more associated with the event that created the Rockies?
There you are again, answering questions I have asked plus adding new answers to the questions I have yet to think. Many thanks, Sir.
Fantastic video! You do your own stunts! Impressive :) (I am still watching but couldn't help myself)
Yep, I hope his wife doesn't know he does this stuff. 😀
Love listening to these. You are so informative. I've been to most of the places you talk about so your explanations really help. Also, with all the contention and misinformation in the news, it's restful to listen to someone sharing his love of nature. Thanks.
I live in this great state we call WYOMING. Love the drone footage it makes you really see how the land is laid out in front of you. Thanks for the drone footage.
Thanks 👍
As usual, this is excellently edited and presented! You are a professional sir!
Fascinating to see your next video on the plate tectonics responsible for these volcanoes. This complement the Idaho Batholith and Crazy Eocene series Nick Zentner has done. You, Nick, and Shawn Willsey are my Geology Professors. Thank you.
I'm a new subscriber and I am overjoyed by this discovery. I'm brought back to the concise quality of the television I had when I was young. The passion and inclusive narration that you have, Myron, helps me to remember what a good teacher can do for our curiosity as learners.
I will be using this to learn with my little ones. We love exploring our parks, our environment, and our geography. I couldn't imagine how fun a walk with you might be!
Have a wonderful journey!
P.S. I'm glad you were there, Elgin!!
love that you are sharing with the "little ones"
I just checked if I maybe missed a notification for a new video about 20 minutes ago. Imagine my surprise when I refresh my feed and this pops up. Cheers!
Oh wow!
Excellent work Myron and Kudos to you on the efforts and lengths you go to for our entertainment and enlightenment. thank you very, very much. Garth
The walls look the same as the ones that we have here in colorado on the spanish peaks. Awesome vids! Thank you!
It's one of my favorite places in Colorado. I drive over la veta pass twice a week to go to and from work, and I always see something new every time I drive by. I live in the valley, and our house has spatter cones and shields all around it.
Balderdash! You will traverse many a river still, good sir, as you bring to our screens more of these marvelous gifts! It is so much fun exploring and learning vicariously through you. Your unbridled enthusiasm & excitement are refreshing and invigorating and I sincerely thank you.
Many many thanks
Nice to meet you Elgin. Don’t let your brother do these trips alone. What fabulous drone footage, superb narration, personality and knowledge of remarkable work.
Fantastic video, no annoying music. First time visitor to the channel, not disappointed! Thanks for sharing this all with us!
Awesome, thank you!
You make fantastic videos. Thank you
I love these videos so much. The information is presented in a very digestable manner, the audio quality is great, and the visuals really help to emphasize the points that are being made. I love the use of the drone shots as things pull back to reveal more. Thank you very much for always producing such fantastic educational content!
You've outdone yourself with this one.
Thank you Myron Cook! This was one of the most dramatic, interesting and beautiful locations I've seen in your videos!!! Looking forward to the next one.
Great vistas…thanks Myron! Bringing geology to life! 👍
Myron-
You are the best geologist on UA-cam bar none. I love how you just don’t tell us what is going on, but you bring the viewers into the scientific process so we learn to understand how to actually think like a geologist. Amazing! I just wish there were a similar channel for where I live in California. Keep making such great content!
Just what I need to perfect my Friday night!
Well done video. I very much appreciate the detail and quality you put into your videos. Your method of presentation keeps engagement high as the viewer is slowly coming to conclusions and sees more and more. Thank you Myron!
Myron, I do not have a background in geology, but your videos are so fascinating and compelling I find myself getting immersed into all of these. Thank you for your time and effort.
Glad you like them!
I find your videos fascinating but it is how you present your material in a captivating way that makes the big difference. Thanks again.
This is my trip to Yellowstone, Thanks Myron!
Thank you for another visually stunning, emotionally inspiring and intellectually engaging video, @Myron Cook! I look forward to more videos in this series!
Amazing Wyoming! Definitely one of the top 3 states for natural beauty in my opinion!
This was amazing. I love your smooth and informative delivery! Great drone footage. You sir are a national treasure!
Myron, I really enjoy how you set your video up with a question or something surprising and then take us along to discover like we were right there with you.
Great video. Really well done and informative. Thanks for making it!
The weekend just got better 👌
This is the first one of your videos I have watched. Your enthusiasm is infectious and your love for what you do is palpable. I have now subscribed and plan to watch many more.
love to hear it!
I love your videos. I earned my geology degree at Eastern Kentucky University. Can never get enough. My wife and I were driving from Phoenix last year. She saw all these strange hills. We were in the San Francisco Volcanic Field. On our round about return we ran into Ship Rock. Another ancient volcano with dikes all around.
Wonderful
Myron, your videos are a breath of fresh air Sir!
I’ve ridden my MC through Yellowstone numerous times; along the Yellowstone River to the North and across the Beartooth Mtns to the East the Grand Tetons to the south.
Seeing them first hand, one never tires of learning more about the great Yellowstone hot spot and the massive eruptions that have taken place in the past.
This old dawg loves geology! I look forward to the next video! 👍🏼🫡
thanks!
Thanks for taking us on this hike Myron.
Thank you Myron and Elgin for a fantastic presentation. After exploring much of the NW, I have become addicted to the study of geology. I can see that Wyoming and Montana are exceptional! Your teaching style has a captivating cadence which helps envision the geologic process.
Many thanks!
Thank you for bringing back the memories.
your welcome
Thank you for the content. Very informative and educational! I appreciate you manner and effort.
Great thumbnail
Myron, I really enjoy watching your videos. I really learn a lot.
Thank you, sir
As a petroleum geologist that works in Wyoming I really appreciate this video
thanks!
Wonderful presentation, voice, and scenery. This is broadcast educational TV quality in its heyday! Thanks so much Myron!
I often sat on a mountain side and listen to erosion happening, when you see and hear small pebbles move for no reason, it's the mountain moving just a tiny bit. It's an awesome feeling
Wat een mooie manier om erosie te beschrijven!
