  • I honestly struggled to square the face until until i did this! This drill will make you square the club face every single time! Squaring is the club face is really hard, well now it is EASY with this drill. This drill is not clickbait this is real! This drill focuses on the ball and hitting the ball in a certain spot and lining the club face up.
This is a simple golf tip for all golfers, beginner golfers, senior golfers and professional golfers. Squaring the clubs face in your golf swing is so important and is the key to hitting the golf ball longer, further and more consistent.

Alex, played today and used this fantastic tip… the towel trick really helped to get the right feel…
Initially over gripping and sending it down the left, but after a few holes I was hitting it down the middle and best distance for me…
    Many thanks.

Brilliant, as usual. Your tips and observations along with those from a couple other sites have improved my game immensely. I used to have slicing or pull issues. Definitely coming over the top and guessing where the ball would go. Virtually a non-factor any longer. I’m hitting it far more consistently than ever. Scoring high 70s, low 80s, from high 80s low 90s. 75 years old. While I’m probably 40/50 yards shorter than in my 30s, I can still put it out there 230/250 on most rounds. Best thing, ball goes straight, power fad, or slight draw. Appreciate your content.

I've found that with a neutral grip, if I keep my thumb on the top hand facing up with the club parallel to the ground & keep it in that position during the swing, my wrist is flat at the top & the face is the same as my spine angle which keeps it square through impact as long as I don't stop rotating thru the shot. My normal flight is straight when I do this.

I have the opposite problem...wrists are rolling at impact with driver and hybrid causing low and left pulls and hooks. Trying to rotate the body more, but the hands want to roll over...short to mid irons OK. Suggestions/drills on stopping the turning over of the wrists?

Seems to me if you have a strong grip, like you advise in your first tip, having the tee pointed at the target at impact would close the club face too much. I'm really struggling with an open club face and when I try to manipulate my wrist position I overcompensate and pull, hook, or pull hook it

You did not really tell us actually how to get that Tee square to target through impact...is it left or right hand rotation or is it body rotation or something different?. I always make sure that I have a stronger grip but there is some critical movement that I am not doing as into impact I am still presenting an open clubface. I am when playing very reluctant to be deliberately rotating my hands & forearms 'closed' through fear of pull hooking the ball but is this the move that I should be doing.
NB I do take care that I don't start my transition with an all arm over the plane move by making sure I start down from ground up YET I still struggle all day with a slicing driver. Strangely off the fairway I can hit my 3xWood with a draw no problems but I just can't do it easily with my Driver. This the most destroying thing in golf together with a fat shot.
    Any obvious suggestions?.
Thank you & hoping you can help me.

I slightly close the face at address when I hit the big stick. The feeling of a strong grip is just weird for me . When I'm fully extended the clubface squares itself and the ball just Flys off the face . Make sure your club path is right though. Happy golf guys!!! Great video BTW.

First. I am occasional golfer. Maybe 9 holes once every 2- 3 weeks. My clubs are ancient (Titleist DTR circa 1990) a few decades ago I played weekly, but never became proficient. Always a bogey golfer. Never hit my driver straight - always a little push / slice. Yesterday I played in a charity tournament (18 hole best ball). The previous 2 plus weeks I have put 20 minutes per night into my swing using just a few of Alex's videos. I broke out my driver and hit almost every fairway. Only lost 2 balls !!!! Look, if you want to bump your game up a little to a point where golf CAN BE FUN, take your device, a few plastic practice balls and a club to the backyard and put a few minutes a night into your game with these videos. If an old duffer can knock off strokes - any one can.

well, the pete cowen towel wringing drill is not entirely correct. the left hand and right hand don't work as antagonistic opposites. the left hand is its own antagonistic opposite. the flexor retinaculum and the digiti minimi in the left hand work as antagonistic opposites in the waggle. when the right hand works as an antagonistic opposite, to the left hand, it obstructs heel pad control in the left hand and the right arm does not fold correctly. but, the club is released by pressing the left hand against the left side of the shaft in the hitting area. bill mehlhorn explains this in his video.

When golfer's read Ben Hogan's famous book, they think they need a weak grip. Hogan was a notorious hooker, so he created a grip that would work for him. Each golfer needs to experiment to find his own custom grip. Most golfers, being right handed, need a stronger grip.

Alex do you have any grip tips for those of us that need to use much larger grips? I use jumbomax grips, not because I have huge hands but because it takes stress off my hands and wrist that I had previous surgery on. Since my change I either hit blocks or slices and the change of the hand position seems o have less effect on this.

Alex, you will get the Hogan “towel wringing” feeling if the forearms automatically if you: 1) Ground the club and place the left hand on the handle with wrist at the angle it naturally hangs (as suggested by Nicklaus back in the 70s in ‘Golf My Way” but then; 2) raise the club in left hand until shaft is vertical with both elbows bend and tucked into body, then; 3) place the right hand on the handle in a Vardon or Interlaced grip, then; 4) lower the club to about 1/2” above the ground with a combination of the Hogan “sitting on stool” sitting down backwards action and allowing the weight of the club to both pull the arms straight and very importantly act as a counter-weight for balance when performing that sitting down backwards posture. The goal when sitting down is to keep lower legs as vertical as possible for leverage to resist the tendency for the club force to pull support onto the toes through impact. That is only possible if the club is kept in the air so it’s weight is felt and used as a counter-balance (one of Hogan’s secrets he didn’t fully explain in the book I learned from watching videos of his swing.)
Bio-mechanically what happens when arms are straightened with hands on the handle is a counter-rotation of the arms creating a stretching counter-torque between the arms. It automatically creates that tight connected-with-chest V and towel wringing feeling in arms and hands Hogan illustrated and described in Five Lessons AUTOMATICALLY. Not ever resting the club dead on on the ground is what allows static balance to be achieved at address biased on the heels, anticipating how the club force will try to pull the body mass on the toes. Starting at address on balls of feet and toes will cause a golfer to be pulled onto the toes tilting the entire swing plane in a way that isn’t felt until the finish where a golfer which strikes the ball with weight on toes will struggle for balance. Loss of balance = loss of consistent ball striking and accuracy.
Read the PGA Manual of Instruction as I did after figuring out the cause and effect by myself and you will find it also recommends placing right hand on the grip by first gripping with left then raising it so the shaft is vertical.

Hi Alex, I am a pensioner who is a bit lost with my swing! I have never had a golf lesson, I play off 13, but have stopped playing in comps due to inconsistency! When I took up the game in my late 20s, I was informed that the left hand was dominant hand, I was fine with that till I had to use a wedge -shank- yet I can follow through with my right hand/arm forcing the follow through and end up with some good results! This is where I get confused with the golf swing! My game is a mixed bag of goods, more good than bad, but the bad is real bad! I tend to be forcing my down swing which results in some great long drives or some serious pulls to the left (lost ball/s) I am at the stage of chucking it and WANT TO take up Lawn bowling, in fact I have taken out a membership - PLEASE HELP!
