    Derek, please be careful on that one legged leg press. I'm a paramedic in the UK and got called to a gym where a guy was doing this and his foot slipped. He had 5 plates either side and ended up losing his leg. Why don't you put your resting leg up on top and be safe mate. Namaste.m M x

      Not unless it has a stopper like at my gym, eo if your foot slips it will stop before it hits you.

    What I like is your free and casual approach to mixing it up: different amounts of weight; varying the number of reps; throw in some stretching. As opposed to: 3 sets of 10 reps and that’s it. Nice.

      Yes, calisthenics combined with some traditional gym exercises is a great combo Skeeter. Thanks for the comment.

      I agree Mr.Fitness. People are always like 'I PR'd on my dead lift today' .. and I'm like 'I got closer to the planche today!' ... haha big deal. What do you think about calisthenics made your lower chest so big?

  • @callmesabs
    @callmesabs 6 років тому

    I hate being this person. I have a back injury so I really look for hip/low back mobility. All I'm going to say is squeeze your glutes at the top of your deadlift. Your hips should kinda come forward but your low back is stabilized with the glutes. I promise I'm just looking out for you! I'm sure you're going to be fine but I guess I didn't want to not say something. Love you dude, I am so thankful for what you do.

    you have great videos man, I am the same way where I try to mix it up, some days I just try to hit the park and sprint, then do something on every play area I come across, or I'll just go straight into the gym
    great videos every time, including your instagram stories hahaha, keep it up the voice over felt like a story telling time, but it's 👌

      Awesome. Thanks for the comment. Yah, you have to change it up. I don't want to be good at just lifting a weight up and don't, you have to use your strength out in the world! Glad you like the stories. I am always wondering how many people follow me on both. Thanks again for the support.

    I like the voice over. I love leg days because I have bad knees and it was an excuse to skip it but then one day it just clicked and I began to obsess over it. Buuuuut I fell off again. But your getting me hyped again. I was really big in Kris Gethin, but meat is taking me longer to drop weight since I got out the Army. Just started the transition this week.

    You are the best fitness UA-camr that I have seen! I love watching your videos! You are so down to Earth and of course vegan. There are so many health/fitness UA-camrs out there, vegan or not, that seem very materialistic and that can be hard to watch for me personally. Thank you for your time and dedication making these videos, I know it must be hard work. Glad to have found this channel :D

    I love your videos, you are one of the best independent health/calisthenic/nutrition people and you do it without ego, which for me a huge deal because the amount of times you watch a video (especially on youtube) who's got an ego problem. You are informative, happy, clear and concise, and as a viewer and as a meat eater even, I am inspired and its great to see someone do what they enjoy and just say to themselves 'fuck it, i enjoy it, I have fun and don't need to prove my self to anyone', that's the attitude we definitely don't see enough of in people in the world, us being too self-conscious, or concerned. Have you thought about implementing meditation into your life, would be awesome to know. I tried commenting on a youtube video recently (not naming names), and was giving constructive criticism, saying how I love this persons content, but the ego gets in the way sometimes, but quoted their sort of comments they were saying in this persons videos, and all i got in response was a very rude ignorant response saying alone the line of ' i was sensitive and it was a joke'. The comment was " don't worry just because I have a top on, ive still got the gains", which to me was awkward. I respect you don't do that and just do what you do with out the bs. keep it going.

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  8 років тому +4

      Wow. Thank you. No time for an ego. Sure i'm confident, but I'm no better than someone who is just beginning their journey, and no worse than someone who ascended to complete enlightenment. Forever a teacher, forever a student. We can all teach and learn something from each other. Sorry you had that experience, but it doesn't seem like it shook you too much. Thanks for the kind words. I'm just going to keep shining my light, those who are attracted to it will find me. Be well friend!

      Definately something my sensei taught me when I used to do karate is that we are all students and teachers, we have the power to share knowledge and grow. The same as what you put. Its definately something I try to harness in my life and I find nutrition, exercise and mindfulness meditation always makes me discover something new about my self and then life. Different perspectives, awareness of internal and external coming together has taught every experience we have is new, and never stuck, permanent or the same, and that to me is my interpretation I think of what they mean by enlightenment(not implying i am enlightend). Im 19 and have been through a lot, and these things have helped me, let me know if you have considered meditation? You could do it at the end of the day, or at a beach or those other lovely places you work out at. Keep doing what you are doing and hope you are well.

      ***** Hey Joe. I don't currently have a 'sitting' practice, but I do often come back to my breath especially when out in nature. It is something I am working on being more consistent with. I truly believe in the benefits from it. Really good words my friend. You are years beyond your age.

    I definitely need to get better about stretching and proper warming up. It's a good bit harder when you're in a packed gym, though. I just want to get my workout done and get out of there. That's probably also because I workout at a college gym. But, hey, at least I'm going. That in itself was a big step for me. Love the videos, Derek. You could be world's best youtuber, for sure.

    Your rep range for squats is good! your calves are proportional to your body. the weight you are using needs to be light enough for a good range of motion. You're doing that. Your bodyweight base is going to serve you well. I'd say you're doing fine, young man!

    On the leg press try switching up your foot position. Lower feet, like to the point where your heals are hanging off, will make your quads burn! I love it. Then I go into sumo and higher foot positions for hamstrings.

    doing the leg press, noticed your hips rounding forward...be careful with that, keep your hips/pelvis from rounding forward, it will eventually cause a low back strain and/or tear.

  • @TryingToBeKind

    Hey Derek, looks like you're maintaining a nice balance between physique and athleticism. Just a bit of advice: don't pursue gains past where you start losing athletic agility. I've been big muscular, big fat, endurance lean, and athletically muscular/fast.... Big muscles look better and are good for the ego, but don't physically feel that much better than fat (which, of course, sucks). Endurance lean feels fit, but not young and springy by comparison to athletically muscular/fast. Having experienced all of them (now 59 w hip replacements), I'll choose athletically fast/springy for as long as I can!

    Hi +simnett Nutrition! Thanks you for your videos and nice channel! here comes some comments and tips on your video.
    Try goblet squat with kettlebells to open up at your warmup. i will mostdef try those hanging thingy you did - making circles with feet while hanging.
    your squats: as you do all your exercises for upperbody without any equipment do squats like them too. what i mean is to get rid of your shoes. it is an instability for your legs/feet and power leverage.
    try to use more of your glutes at your squats.
    try to go slower - more in control then just bouncing from the floor.
    Again thanks for your videos really awesome channel
    keep up the good work mate

    Cool video. By lifting standards you are a novice,which is a great thing because most of us including me are also novices. Do you follow a split routine? Checkout alphadestiny. He is also from calisthenics background.

      AlphaDestiny doesn't hold a candle to this guy. Unsubscribed from him. His BS and no real info other than trying to argue with himself in every video got old fast.

      Eh? Alphadestiny is a breath of fresh air in the youtube fitness scene. Uses both research and personal experience to educate others, and with the experience and strength he has its worth hearing his opinion. No bullshit, no sponsorships. He is also a very mature individual, not buying into drama and not getting angry at others for having a different opinion. I hope by BS you are referring to his old diet advice, because he announced recently that he is going vegan

      @Simnettnutrition  8 років тому

      Calisthenics? Yes for sure. That is my main love and I used to have an epic set up (if you check out some of my old videos) but life changes, and I have moved and it will rain for the next 6 months here on Vancouver Island. So the gym is my new dojo...until the outdoor season comes. There will be bits of outdoor calisthenics workouts sprinkled in throughout the winter though. Hopefully you stay tuned. Are you a calisthenics king?

    Just discovered your channel, awesome stuff! :D You've got a new sub :)
    First of all, you look a lot heavier than 65kg.
    I too practice calisthenics since a while and find that leg days need some extra loading too, usually combine it with deadlifts for best results :D. Why do you opt for the calf machine instead of just regular (one legged) calf raises?
    Cheers :)

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  8 років тому

      Not the last time I checked this morning. Lol. Any tips? Do you think I have to be able to pull up twice my bodyweight to be able to do a 1 armed pull up? Because I am no where close to adding 64 kgs to my pullups.

    • @charltongunn
      @charltongunn 8 років тому

      Yeah ahah I can't do one, I am trying to learn using primarily the pulley system to gauge my progress. I don't believe you need to be able to do a pull up with double bodyweight. I think it might have something to do with your nervous system, not being able to lift a total weight of 130 kg, but one arm lifting 65kg is easier. Best of luck with it

    I don't buy into vegan body building, it literally provides less than half the recommended protein requirements for people who work out, with a very low quantity of branched-chain amino acids. I think there's a small minority of the population who are exceptionally genetically gifted and can get by with under half the protein the rest of us need, so they figure "because it works for me, it works for everybody."

    you weigh 145 pounds and your seated calf raises have, what, 50 pounds of plates? better off doing body weight raises or skipping calves altogether...you do more than that jumping up to your chin bar man . rich piana gives great calf advice here they need weight! sure, he was on gear, so doing 45 minutes of just calves not doable for us natties, but the sets you do need weight, go heavy on calves you have a sick body, really strong and firm, but calves need work...they will be beautiful balls of muscle when you go heavy, get muscle soreness a day later, trust me. stand to grow big astrocs more than soleus which is worked seated, a small muscle. example, dip belt attached to low cable , raises on block, no back strain when going heavy keep the faith, thx for your motivation. heres pianas word...peace ua-cam.com/video/pw_Y7_55XLo/v-deo.html
