    Derek, I'm so stoked on this channel man!!! You have got to be one of the fastest growing YT's right now, and for good reason. I have told countless friends back home in Canada about you and they keep writing me saying "man I've been binge watching this dude" One gal from Sasky just went vegan because of you. My next challenge is to get my old man hooked. You know how parents are "I've been eating meat for 50 years and I'm fine!"
    Btw Tim the Cat hahaha great cover up :)

    It's very clear that what you have been doing is getting you results. With the DB row when you go heavy and let your shoulder drag down your getting a bigger overload and also a nice stretch in you rear felt and mid back. Doing them "strict" you're gonna "feel the burn" and also build a lot of strength/stability for those levers. I would say (and I do myself) use both. A last little tidbit a mentor of mine used to say "the best exercise to achieve results is the one you haven't been doing". Take care brother and keep posting!

    oh man, i just realized you're the guy taking up the squat rack to do pull ups...
    for the bent over 1-arm row, put your knee and hand of the inactive side down on a bench, and your other foot out to the side. keep your back straight and really focus on "pulling your elbow to the ceiling"
    search "one arm dumbbell row" on youtube, there are a ton of vids
    great video bud!

    What really helped me with those bent over dumbbell rows is focusing on pulling with your elbow.

      Simnett Nutrition haha alright. A sit down with a cup of tea would also be fine. I just started trailrunning or running and even though there a hundreds of videos about it, they all say different things. So i thought i would ask my trustworthy nutristionist :) i found a really cool trail halfmarathon in scotland which i really wanna run, but that's already in 12 weeks. No idea if i am able to do that.
      Also that's a really cool workout video, but i'm still too weak to even do normal push-ups. I hope i will get there eventually

    Your dumbbell rows seems pretty decent. Just remember that the function of your lats is to bring your elbow backwards (in multiple directions, so this can be a downwards movement during a pullup or a pulldown, or a backwards movement during a row). As long as you utilize your lats for this purpose, whilst focusing on stimulating the lat to work during this particular movement, you're good. Also remember that the lats are best activated when the back is slightly arched (emphasize slightly). If not arched slightly, you will use more trapezius and rhomboideus muscles.

  • @The.Fighting.Therapist
    @The.Fighting.Therapist 7 років тому +1

    Hey brother I'm finishing my athletic therapist degree here in Montreal Canada! For your one arm rows! You can either work on more on scapular retraction and let the bother rotate a bit to allow the last to get a little more of a stretch on the eccentric phase! But you may and I've been doing this it's more sport specific for my sport but a great way to hit the lats! You would stand with your right leg in front in a lunge position in front of a cable machine or elastic for a more calesthetic version with your left arm grabbing the pully! From your perform a little forward flexion, then allow the arm to pull a little forward where you feel a stretch then you can start to perform the modified version of 1 arm row!
    Give it a goo if it helps I can perform a video to make it easier and post it on my channel! Keep it up boss vegan power 👊🏼💪🏼🍆🍉🍑🍌🥝🥑🍍

    One thing to remember Derek, always prioritize form over weight.
    With your deadlifts keep your head and neck in line with your spine. I noticed you keep your head up and look in to the mirror but you should be keeping your head in line with your spine throughout the whole movement

  • @luciatomasovicova8892

    Awsome video as always :) Just a little tip : on the deadlifts dont pick up your head and look forward, but try too keep neutral head position. I know, you want to check your form in the mirror, but is not good for your neck and back, especially when weights get heavier.

    When you deadlift keep your chest up and butt out. You might need to work your hip and hamstring flexibility so you can get in deeper before you start to pull. Good job.

    since you feel like you are squatting the weight up on the deadlifts, focus on where you are looking. when you face the mirror, you tend to want to look at yourself. Doing this extends your neck too much and that causes your torso to follow the neck upwards in more of a squat pattern. instead of looking at yourself in the mirror, face the opposite way, look at the ground in front of you in the bottom position, and then let your head go up naturally with your back during the lift. I used to do the same thing when I deadlifted, so now I never face the mirror and think of tucking in my chin to keep my cervical spine neutral. hope this make sense!

    with the one arm row with the dumbells, go to a bench, left knee and left fist on the bench while bent down, right arm holding the weight with right leg bent slightly to balance yourself. move the tricep part of your arm parallel to the ground and no further.
    you were pretty much just doing a bicep workout when you should be isolating your back and lats as much as possible. not saying you didnt try but that's what ended up happening. also detrimental to your spine if you try those heavy weights without balancing yourself and isolating your muscles with the bench to lean on

  • @ProPhilosophy
    @ProPhilosophy 7 років тому

    I think for the rows it depends what you're trying to work. Thoracic flexion under load is almost always contraindicated, but to get full range of motion for your shoulder retractors you kind of have to.
    That being said, I think for one arm Dumbbell rows, keeping your shoulders packed is good because it isometrically trains your shoulders to remain in proper position while doing dynamic pull movements. This is probably more important than getting slightly more ROM for for your retractors. Ie. Like the core, in my opinion isometric resistance for shoulder stability beats out getting slightly more ROM during a movement.
    Now on the other hand, in regards to hypertrophy, targeting your retractors like the rhomboids, mid traps, etc, I think seated rows or facepulls/other cable variations are probably the way to go. A little bit of thoracic flexion is probably okay in these movements because there's less of a shearing force on the spine from the load/gravity.

    Your deadlifts look pretty good form wise, sometimes if you're not feeling it but your form looks right, it kind of becomes a mental thing, something that helps me is instead of focusing on the form of my upper body I put almost all of my focus on pushing the earth away with my feet as hard as I can and powering through my heels and outside of my feet. I'm not sure what shoes you have on but you could give it a shot in just your socks, it sounds weird but maybe you might need a flatter shoe for stabilization and trying it out in your socks for one set might help you figure that out. Also try the one arm bent over rows flat on the ground. Like your knees on the ground body in I think it's called "tabletop" position and one hand down for stabilization. Contract your lats (? I think that's the main muscle it targets) to bring up the dumbbell from a flat surface, it prevents you from any swinging or dropping of the shoulder and focuses completely on your lats pulling up the dumbbell to your side. It's all kind of personal preference, some prefer the stretch and the reach towards the ground while doing them and some might prefer not to! Hope that makes sense!

    I know u dont, but if u all ask me, the exercise with the dumbell should be better if you just keep ur back rigth as table (like in 4 points position) and the dumbell need to do a diagonal from the height of your head to ir ribs. Many greetings and congratulations again, I will try to follow your example and I will make videos in my country to help stop eating animals and have really gains! The Best of luck in everything

    Honestly the form on your first attempt at DB rows were better, key to this exercise is to get a massive stretch and then contraction at the top. Just start a bit lighter to really get the feel for the movement. Cheers yours vids are awesome!

  • @38732371
    @38732371 7 років тому

    Hey man, regarding your bent over row, u should retract your scapula before your biceps take part on the movement. So u tryna drive your elbows til they pass your back, so u can squeeze your back as tight as possible. Always think about your elbows and u should be fine. The second movement is good, though I think u should drop the weight a lil be more than u can get fROM, massive hug

    Your knees shouldn't be locked but shouldn't be bent either when going to grab the bar for the deadlift. In order to critique it more we'd have to see your feet placement, etc which I can't here.
    As far as not being set up for it and being better for Sumos, I don't see that myself.
    If you want a good quick reference for a really good deadlift check out Alan Thrall's 5 Step Deadlift video. It's the best I've seen on the subject and based on Starting Strength, which is a fantastic program (for strength/barbell training).

I'm 20 now and next year maybe I'm going on a cruise liner, hopefully they have equipment and correct nutrition. Any way I can establish personal contact with you?

    keep your head neutral with the deadlifts. Don't look at the mirror look down and keep your spine straight!

    Do you rest between the muscle up drop sets or superset? What about the weighted, is the short time in between basically none or like 15 seconds?

    What kind of time do you take between the drop set pull ups (between each set that is)?
