Reliving The War takes an in-depth look at the WWF vs WCW "Monday Night War" era of pro wrestling. Week by week every episode of Raw and Nitro gets covered (including every match and every promo) to find out which show was really the best.
On Nitro this week Hollywood Hulk Hogan issues a challenge to both Bret Hart and Sting. Bret accepts the challenge, and so the long awaited Hulk Hogan vs Bret Hart match finally happens in World Championship Wrestling. The Four Horsemen are in the arena tonight, Chris Jericho wants another match against Bill Goldberg, and it looks like Scotty Steiner may have received another "injury" during a 2 on 1 match.
Over on the WWF channel it’s the night after Break Down and we're going to find out who currently holds the WWF Championship. Mr. McMahon has a title presentation in the middle of the show but an interruption leads to one of the most memorable moments of the whole Monday Night War. Elsewhere on the show Al Snow takes on Vader, we have a 4 corner elimination match to determine the number 1 contender for the European Title, and Owen Hart takes on Dan Severn.

I’m waiting for mankind’s title win in 1999. To this day, I still think that was the single greatest moment with the greatest pop in wrestling history.

That laughing Austin, getting escorted out, is one of my favorite Austin moments.
Vinnymac during the attitude era was very underrated! He always sold great and proved that he would do everything he asked talent to do.
That’s one thing I can say Vince was good about: he was willing to do anything and everything that he would’ve expected of talent. Even toward the end of his original tenure backstage he held his end of the bargain: it’s how we got that video of Vince in a full suit doing a trust fall before WrestleMania 36 to show Rob Gronkowski it was safe.

Since this series started, I’ve been waiting for this episode. Attending the WCW Monday Night Nitro event in Rochester, New York, marked the first time I attended a wrestling event. I remember getting there with my dad right when the doors opened. Juventud Guerrera was hurdling the seats row by row for some reason, and my dad called out to him. I brought a sign reading “Goldberg + Herman = tag team champs” Good memories and thanks WB for putting this series together.
It's absolutely wild to me that Owen ever used that Piledriver again after he already nearly ended Austin's career with it.

When Austin attacked Vince jumping off the Zamboni, I didn't realize that Taker and Kane were in the ring. I laughed really hard when they just stood there and let Vince get beat up by Austin 😆🤣 9:03 is probably my favorite meme to come from this series. Never disappoints lol

Austin, Foley, Rock, Taker, Vinny Mac all were indispensable. HHH and Kane were just below that level.

This nitro was actually my first introduction to professional wrestling. I went over to my cousin's house one day and he told me that he had been to a wrestling show. I had no idea what wrestling was so he said here I taped it and handed me a VHS. I remember me being a young 6-year-old pressing the play button and coming across La Parka walking down the aisle with a steel chair in hand. When he hit that corkscrew moonsault my young brain was immediately captivated by what I was watching and I have been a fan ever since. It's also why La Parka is my favorite wrestler of all time
Owen's piledrivers have made me reevaluate him as a wrestler
Owen should have stopped doing them. Focus on submission holds instead.
He should have stuck with the frog splash from the rafters.
If we didn't lose him when we did, his piledrivers on Austin in '97 and Severn right here would have been more of a big deal. Best-case scenario is that they become an old shame that he'd eventually fix, and make amends with the guys involved.
Umm guys, Owen's piledriver injuring Severen is part of a storyline in this case. It isn't like Austin's case a year prior.

We're approaching the worst of WCW pre-Russo. The Ultimate Warrior fiasco, the end of Goldberg's streak and the finger poke of doom. WCW tried hiring Russo to recover from that and he made everything much worse. I think Bischoff booked himself into a corner and he gave too much power to some people and he didn't know how to get out of the hole he'd digged. Vince McMahon had found his groove with Stone Cold, the Rock, DX, Undertaker, Kane and Mankind and later on the addition of the Dudleys, Kurt Angle, Trish Stratus, Lita and the Radicalz. He found the Acolytes kinda randomly and he "discovered" the Hardys, Edge & Christian and by late 99 and early 2000 WCW might as well have surrendered.
FPoD was botched, it should have worked well. Ultimate Warrior still got buys and was interesting to fans, just handled badly. Godlbergs streak had to end at some point.
I think things like this Bret/Hogan match, Hogan running for president and the dissolution of NWO Elite...these are more easily blamable things.

The crowd were insane when Austin turned up, it was beautiful. These really were the best times when it came to pro wrestling.
During my re-watch of this period a few years back, this Owen match was one time I wish I had a time machine to go back and stop it from happening, since this match leads directly into the reintroduction of the Blue Blazer and we all know where that leads.

I was 9 on 09/28/98 … and it’s about the time when I first remember watching wrestling weekly …. It seems like at this exact period in time .. both wcw and wwf were as equal as another other time before or after it … what do you think?

WCW gave away Bret Hart vs Hulk Hogan on free TV with no buildup. A match that was 5 years in the making, a match that was far more anticipated than Hogan vs Warrior. People wonder why WWF won.

Apparently, the ending of the Raw main event was improvised. Time was running out, and Taker decided to take the pinfall for the Rock. It really established the Rock big time.
Such a good way to end a horrible week.

I don't think it was mentioned in the episode, but this is the last we see of The Godwinns / Southern Justice as a regularly-appearing tag team on RTW. Mark Canterbury sustained a vertibrae injury that required spinal surgery, and he ended up retiring from WWF. These two made one last WWF appearance during a dark match against the Dupp Brothers in September 2000, and much later re-appeared in GLCW as the Texas Hangmen in 2011.
I look forward to reliving the war every week, the nostalgia is great. Cheers for the memories brother.

I was gonna say same. I think Rock was supposed to go over anyway though? I think? Not for certain on that. But yeah they were short, you can even hear Earl telling them they have like 30 seconds if you listen close just before the finish.

Fun fact: on the original broadcast of this RAW, Austin actually knocks out the audio when he's driving in with the zamboni. The audio is well delayed so the iconic "Don't let him in here!" line from Vince doesn't get heard by TV audiences until like five seconds after he says it 😅
