Captain Kirk NEVER gave up his ship and would die to protect her and his crew. No other captain has carried himself as captain Kirk. He is the original. I grew up watching the original series. 63 yrs later, I still watch the original series on DVD. One of my ringtones is the original series theme song. I worked at INTEL manufacturing wafers, microchips. TRUE STORY: at an event at Intel, on stage an individual made a mistake recalling Capt. Kirk's passing the Kobayashi Maru claiming Capt. Kirk failed the test. I stood up and straighten him out and told him how Capt. Kirk was given a commendation for original thinking. I was later awarded a prize from Intel for my efforts.
Thank you. It is apples and oranges. There are different leadership styles. We had an action-packed hero already. Creating a new Kirk in the Next Generation would have been a mistake. I loved both series.
I think if they were both captains of identical flagships at the same time there would be very few problems that couldn't be solved. They would probably wind each other up like crazy but still have a drink together at the end of the day
Well, Picard had Q, and I'm reminded of one scene. "I told you, you're dead, this is the afterlife... and I'm God" "You are not God!" "Blasphemy. You're lucky I don't cast you out, or smite you, or something."
Unfair, Kirk was the cowboy in the early days of exploration and making rules up as needed. Picard period space exploration had scaled the maturity scale and Picard was more administrator and diplomat rather than cowboy.
My favorite is a comparison between The Naked Time and the Naked Now. In the Naked Time the whole ship goes crazy from a space MacGuffin. Kirk overcomes it through sheer force of will and the love for his ship. In the Naked Now they face the same MacGuffin. Picard just skips and giggles through the whole episode leaving Wesley to save the day.
This is an unfair and unrealistic comparison. You cannot say one is better than the other. When I was younger, I asked my dad, "Who is a better basketball player, Dr. J or Magic Johnson?" He replied, "They are two different basketball players." The same holds true here. Johnathan Archer saved humanity before Kirk was born. His exploits make him a badass Captain. Benjamin Sisko prevented the Dominion from conquering the Alpha Quadrant. Jean Luc Picard prevented the Borg from assimilating humanity back in the past when warp drive was discovered. These were monumental humanity-saving accomplishments from these captains. Even Kathryn Janeway successfully got her crew back from the Delta Quadrant, despite making a humanitarian decision that stranded them there. So you cannot state that one is better than the other. They are just different.
To be fair, and yes even though Kirk is better, it was Sybock who took the Enterprise through the great barrier. Kirk pretty much had his hands tied behind his back. So lets get that plot point straight here.
My favorite conquering of the Kobyashi Maru (sp?) of the few times it's been done (3, I think) had to be Nog, the first Ferenghi in Starfleet: He tried to barter with the attackers, and the computer crashed, lmao
I was never a fan of Captain Estrogen. Captain Kirk was way better, and Captain Janeway put Picard to shame. The Sisko was a better Captain than Picard.
I think it just depends on your age. I saw the Wrath of Khan as a kid at the drive in theater. I watched TOS reruns weekly as a kid growing up. I loved Picard as well but as a teen amd early adult I stopped following along as much as I did as a kid. I'm sure people who were kids during Picard's run feel the same way. My younger brother (8 years) thinks Picard is "more realistic" and Kirk is "too cheesy."
Kirk has never been able to appeal to me like Picard does. Kirk doesn’t feel like a true leader to me, more like a danger. He’s reckless and emotional where Picard seems like a thoughtful, compassionate leader. In reality we’d all want a Picard but maybe many people like the fantasy of a Kirk style leader.
Picard would let people die a horrible, terrifying death, or let them be enslaved.......just because they did not have warp drive....and then go on to praise about the 'greatness' of the prime directive, which, to me, is a doctrine of moral laziness......and, like communism (and all the other economic 'isms'), only works on PAPER. Kirk would just go and do what's right. I lost a LOT of respect for Picard in Homeward, and the other prime directive stories.
Am I the only one upset that there isn't a reversed video "Why Picard is better than Kirk" I mean Kirk questioned God? How bout Picard having a Bromance with God's Brother Q? Kirk overcame adversity? How bout holding a Vulcan's mind while it's in the throes of Vulcan Dimentia? Kirk always finds a way? So does Picard. Even while literally transformed into a mindless part of a hivemind, he engineered the destruction of an entity that Kirk would have been eaten alive by. Come on, let's get some fairness
Kirk just cheated on the test. It wouldn't work in real life. If you are saying Kirk is the hero of Nimoy's film you are just a fanatic on Shatner having lost the plot.
who would win in a fist fight? kirk! who's got hair? kirk! who gets the hottest space chicks? kirk! who's ship looks waaaaaaaaay cooler? the original enterprise ! there you go. picard wins at being gay though so thats one thing he's good at. credit where credit is due!
I’d have more respect for Picard if at any time in the 10 years that show was on he turned to first officer and asked “Why are there so many fucking children aboard an active duty warship!”
@@SirGalahadCtny They get into space battles all the time. even so the second that one advanced alien race kidnapped there kids. the first thing Picard should have done was get all the kids out of there.
The Next Generation has a few good episodes. But it should be the other way around. It should have a few bad episodes, with the bulk being good episodes. The Next Generation includes a mind reader, a walking, talking, knows everything android, an engineer that can see the un-see-able, and portrays Picard as the smartest man that ever lived. And then there is Guinan, whose guidance is legendary. They picked a real-life, empty-headed doofus to play the "I know everything" role. And the writers always prove that Picard's wisdom was right, no matter how absurd. But of course Picard's decisions will work out in the end... because the writers make the implausible seem like brilliance. The Original Series did an admiral job at having plausible characters and plots where Kirk was able to use common sense (rather than politically correct sense). Deep Space Nine is a clown show. The best plots, and the best character development, and the best talent goes to Star Trek Voyager. Nearly all of the episodes are very good. No one comes across as a showoff. In fact, even though some of the characters are understood to be brilliant, they give them character flaws, and have fun with those character flaws. Show me a TNG episode where Guinan is the butt of any jokes or is portrayed as having any character flaws.

I think picard makes a better peacetime leader and kirk a better wartime leader. Both important
