Two things...1st thank you for sending the MD180 fin. Much appreciated. And B, great review. I rock an Oasis for all my fishing. I think it’s a real sleeper in the lineup. Prior to the Oasis, I used a Revo 13. I don’t feel like I lost anything going to the Oasis. I use it solo most of the time. With 40lbs in the front end when I’m solo (90%), and me in the back seat, it runs and tracks like a dream for me. When my wife is along, pull the weight and away we go. A fishing machine. I’ve used it in lakes for whatever I can, and ocean for salmon, halibut and rockfish. Jurassic park for sturgeon. It does everything great. Thanks for all your great videos.
Thanks for talking about the number of manufacturers that make kayaks with tandem seating and pedal drives for both seats. That really helps narrow my search. After hours of research about features I need, I think I'm heading in the direction of one of Hobie's three choices.
That Crack from the seat on the new models have got me Sold on the older low rider seats. Warranty is Not a Lifetime with the Hobie. Great Video Thanks
Great review. I've always used a solid, well used 15 foot skiff for the things kayaks can do, but I do see how stopping in a wide spot on the road and dragging a 90 pound boat over rip-rap or through brush would be useful. I get the feeling that it is more the aesthetics of self-power and more challenge that drives most kayaker's.
I can't speak for all but for myself it is definitely about the self-power. No motor means no sound so I get to see cool sea critters up close without droning their environment with engine noise. The challenge/workout is just a bonus.
I was all too happy to be rid of my Hobie Outback. It was almost right with many of it's "features". That is the best long term review of a fishing kayak I have seen on UA-cam. WELL DONE. I'll just stick with my cheaper kayak for now. Fully outfitted at 1/2 the cost of the outback. Trolls like a dream. Cheers,
I bought an Emotion Stealth Pro angler ($700) online from Costco and put a 24 lb thrust watersnake ($125) electric on the back with a 35 Amp-hour battery ($70). So I have $1100 in my package with rod holders, fishfinder, etc. I can troll for 6 hours or run at 3.7 mph for 2.5 hours. I am still working out a better steering setup similar to the Hobie but what I have works fair for now. I always had buyers remorse with my outback because everything almost worked right. I knew if I changed this or that the next guy wouldn't want to buy it. With this boat, I am happier than a beaver with a fresh tree. Cut a little here, add a little there. If I really screw up West Systems Gflex epoxy will fix anything on this boat. Cheers,
I'm learning a lot from your videos. Thanks for posting them. I know this is a year old but if the compass duo checks all the boxes except dual rudder control, have you thought about mounting a pulley to the front and using a rope to control the tiller that way?
@@spiltmilt I saw multiple people copying Hajime's TI rope tiller system and became inspired. I wish there was a way to split a tandem island into multiple pieces for transport/storage.
We are upgrading this Sunday to this kayak in the same colour and can't wait to try those new seats, old style seating is just a back killer and we are over it. That over size rudder you are talking about is that what Hobie calls their large rudder?
Just bought a '22 Oasis. Nearly the same boat, don't see many changes. I wonder if they fixed the rudder? Our rudder is so responsive I can dump us in the water with a quick shift of the lever if the wife isn't ready for it. That thing will cut left/right quick. When we first got in, it would barely steer, then I realized I didn't have the rudder fully deployed. Can't see anything they've changed on the boat except maybe the holding cords on the rear are a little different and the 180 drives are standard. No fish holders, no rails. Are the turbo fins a worthwhile upgrade?
I know this is an old video, but I just got an oasis and will be adding gear tracks (silly that they aren't on there already). I see you said you put on Yak Attack tracks, did you just screw them right on, or did you somehow put a back mounting on the inside of the hull as well? Hard to reach inside, but I worry about strength without a back mounting plate or at least a nut. Thanks!
I used it solo for a better part of a year. It definitely helps to plug the front mirage drive scupper and to add weight in the bow to reduce hull slap.
Can you expand on your reasons against having a pedal drive kayak needing a trailer? What is it about a trailer? I realize a trailer needs a boat ramp............or does it? Since it's a kayak being towed it could be wheeled once arriving, whether a boat ramp exists or primitive launch. Need additional space to park at fishing destination. Additional cost of yearly tabs........yes. Trailer maintenance in the way of lights and bearing, sure. Need space to store a boat trailer, again a negative. Have to install a trailer hitch on your Subie, yes again. Not sure if any of the meantioned reasons apply to your situation.
Many of the reasons you mention are concerns. Registration and tabs are a big concern but additionally many of the lakes I fish are found on rough roads and the lightweight kayak trailers don't fair well on rough roads.
Would love to hear your ideas on using this kayak solo. I too am interested in having a kayak that I can use with a friend. But there will be plenty of times that I use it solo. Is it "ok" when you are using it alone? Thanks.
I fished out of this solo for 6 months. Run a plug in the front position and add some weight to the bow to reduce hull slap and to help the bow cut through the water. I just a 20 lb barbell in the bow.
How is the operation on the water when you are by yourself, , as my wife has a kayak for pleasure trips and I would like to join her on my own kayak and occasionally do some fishing , as we tour together? I am 5'10 and 250#;'s and worried about balance with my frame size and operating from rear seat.
I am 5'7" and 180 lb and fished from it solo all the time. The kayak handles better if you add a little weight in the front when no one is sitting up there. I threw a 20 lb dumb bell in the front when fishing solo. It helps reduce hull slap.

This issue I have with the Compass is it has less storage space in the stern than the Oasis which is already very limited.
@@spiltmilt I saw multiple people copying Hajime's TI rope tiller system and became inspired. I wish there was a way to split a tandem island into multiple pieces for transport/storage.

It comes standard on the Oasis I believe
Love the videos keep them coming!

Yes I used backing plates.
@@spiltmilt thank you!
Asking for info on yellow cushion padding you had on rear seat., Swoosh .
Yes a Swoosh pad.
How often do you use this kayak solo? I can buy a used 2016 model in great shape for $1000, but I would be solo 80% of the time.
I used it solo for a better part of a year. It definitely helps to plug the front mirage drive scupper and to add weight in the bow to reduce hull slap.
@@spiltmilt Does Hobie make a unit to plug the front drive scupper? Also, do you think the price is fair?
Yes they make a plastic plug and $1000 is a screaming good deal
@@spiltmilt Thanks for the quick response.

Should I get this if I mainly don't fish but totally would?
Great review. Can a second rudder control be installed for the leading occupant?
It already has one
Im referring to the boats you mentioned and their only having rudder controls in the rear
No I don't think u can install rudders in the front seat on those other models

How do you find fishing alone in it ? is it stable enough ?
Very stable and reasonably maneuverable especially if you put a little weight in the front so the bow bites into the water a little bit.
@@spiltmilt thanks mate im thinking of purchasing a 2016 model
Have you ever mounted a downrigger to this tandem kayak?
No never did
What gear tracks and hardware diid you install? My biggest problem is just that. Got some Scotty hardware but that doesn't fit well.
I use YakAttack gear tracs

there is never any perfect product everything has a compromise
I use a Deeper Soner
Dear Spilt Milk: Did Hobie make any of the changes you wanted to see, such as 4 rod holders, in the Oasis 2021 or 2022?
Nope
Contact Hobie about those cracks, pretty sure they will fix stuff like that.
No they won't. It's out of warranty
If you were to fish the open ocean with your wife, would you get the Oasis all over again?
Still the best option for a tandem ocean going kayak IMO
@@spiltmilt Thank you!
