Hey Dan this is dan...I have brain injurys
I want to get stable sit on top kayak
I have service dog gsp I want to take
With me fishing and float down river
I'm weak so need to be light too..
I saw one with wheel... maybe a strap on type might be better I don't know.. I have looked at some floor plans I like
The three waters big fish12...I think
The lure... and the 12 perception..
I'm waiting open lay out...with Rutter
I like the perception because maybe
Mount a electric motor...I get nerofatige
      That strikes with no warning..
The pedal drivers are more money
My Disability checks are a joke
I'm hoping the right kayak I could use to get strength back and lose weight..
Mostly shallow rivers.. some deeper ones
When I get things figured out...I might have to get out and drag around trees in water this is the weight issues mentioned
Small gravel pits and lakes is my other
      Goals too....what do you think
It's important to me...thanks for helping me
Oh and are paddles a big deal I'm going to need one...do any the ones come with paddles?

I know this video is over a year old but boy does it come in handy for us, new to paddling folks. I appreciate your efforts to teach others and to put it in a away that the beginner can easily understand. It is also such a treat to not have to deal with a snob that thinks one has to start out with the best of everything to even dip a toe into the sport. Thanks for all your efforts Dan.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

    Hi Dan,
My wife and I recently visited your shop and were impressed with your facility and personnel.
We are just getting back in the sport after an extended, and forced, absence from all physical activities. I unfortunately had to sell my beloved Merlin XT thinking I was never going to be able to paddle again. Well, after a lot of prayer and a new, experimental medical procedure, I committed to actually paddle again. We picked up a pair of used Prodigies for an obscenely cheap price and are ready to jump back in with both feet.
Your love and excitement for the sport is obvious and has re-ignited "the" spark in me again.
Thanks for that and hope to meet you soon.
    Dave

It was a wonderful experience on a rented kayak at a state park. I am now ready to buy my first kayak and I did your five kayak review under $300 and it was fabulous. Very helpful video! I'd appreciate more detail on actual hand positions as you paddle. Someone pointed me at this video because I have arthritis in my hands, especially my thumbs, and he wanted me to see how you use your hands while paddling (not gripping them all the time). If you could talk more about that I think it would be helpful. Lots of folks, not just me, do use the "paddle death grip" in part because they're using arms, not torso, for power. Thanks!

Great video Dan. Really clear, accurate, and simple communication style. Makes it easy to learn. One thing I remember when I was learning is that “move the boat, not the paddle” by imagining planting the paddle in concrete, keeping it stationary. Then unwinding and rotating the torso to propel the boat forward, past the stationary paddle. Really helps to use the legs and bigger muscles of the upper body instead of the smaller arm muscles.

This is a great video. Be safe my friend..And I bought the moken, after lots of research. this may have been asked previously, but I have the same question. Your blades are offset relative to each other. I assume this relates to the stroke you are teaching? So beginners should have blades that similarly are offset?

Went paddling for the first time today with a Intex Challenger K1. Was on the water for a bit over an hour. I've seen a lot of these intro videos but none ever mentioned or warned about what happened to me. The paddling went fine thanks to videos like this, but when I got to the shore and tried to get out of the kayak, my legs would not support me. I couldn't keep my balance for a few minutes. Luckily there was someone there to help me out and support me and stop me from falling. I realized that it was like sitting on a toilet for an hour and then trying to stand up. It only lasted a few minutes but it was a big surprise.

I am not a kayak fisher, but a sea kayaker and I find it great that you learn people the skills of kayaking. Very important, what you're doing here! Compared to kayaking in a sit-in kayak you probably have to use longer paddles because of the width of the kayak (which makes it far more important to use your legs and torso) and I also see that your angle between the blades is 70/80 degrees. Nowadays, in sit-in kayaks most people use angles from zero to 30 degrees and inuit style paddles with long, narrow blades. However, euro style paddles are better for sit on top kayaks (must say I personally prefer them also for sit-in kayaks as well). Greetings from the Netherlands to all of you kayakers, stay safe🙂

Glad you haven't been sucked in to the "new" ACA forward stroke, witch I believe is great for professional paddlers, not the weekend paddler like me. From a physics point of view, the stiff arm pulling on the paddle from the waste and pushing your foot. Keep it up

ACA is great for folks who want formal instruction. But I agree their box does not work for all paddlers.

Outstanding lesson and tips! I’ve been kayaking for seventeen years while I am paddling correctly because I did watch some lessons when I first got my yak, I still got some good info from your instruction and passing this link on to some newbies I know who need to see this. Subscribed!

I have saved this video and come back to it time and time again to review the information all over again. I'll practice on the water and then watch the video again to see if I did it right. Thanks so much. I feel I'm getting better each time I go out.

Thank you from the heartland NE KS west of KC! I am still new at this and am so grateful to have discovered your channel! I am learning much! I just started my kayaking experience last year at 62! And our rescue pup Sadie, who hates water, loves to ride in kayaks, go figure?! If I was nearby I would be coming in your shop! You are the only one I have found in youtube land or anywhere, to help me do this properly. Appreciate this so much! Thanks

I just upgraded to a (modest) kayak that has foot blocks. Haven't been able to take it out yet (winter) but in watching your video I'm very aware of how in my old kayak I paddled straight legged. Can't wait to experience the difference of better kayaking techniques. And THANK YOU!!!

    There you go! Torso rotation!
I was a whitewater guy, and basically an arm paddler until I took an ACA Whitewater course that would grant me certification as an instructor.
Back in the long boat days (Dancer, Pirouette!), playing in rivers also involved eddy hopping UP stream, jet ferries, and a other moves that called for ENDURANCE. Rodeo is a different story.
So this young friend who I'd taught to paddle - who was my height but with 25 lbs more MUSCLE - and who could easily out-sprint me got taught the lesson on the half mile of flat water on the Susquehanna at the bottom of the Muddy River run.
We're in identical boats with matching paddles, and I ask him, 'You wanna race?'
I overtook him a hundred yards from the beach (modeling the top hand punch and solid torso rotation on the way by) and didn't slow down. He was so done.
So, yeah, for distance paddling in "fun-yaks" (sit on tops) and sea kayaks esp., this technique is absolutely essential both for speed and endurance.

Ok, starting this out like a fanboy in that I've watched almost all of your videos. But seriously, I'm commenting on here so that you do know that yes, I have liked this video and almost all others, and yes, I have subscribed to the channel. Like most looking on here, I'm a newbie, and am just now getting into this sport (paddling, not pedaling{yet}). I've appreciated all of your videos, and have to say you do encourage, very well, us-we newbies-wanting to get into the sport of kayaking. I got to try for the first time this past weekend, 5/9/2020, which, if you don't know, is still during this crazy Covid19 thing. This video covers things I did wrong and things I did right and found myself shaking my head "yes" numerous times during this video. Thank you for all you do, and continue to do for this sport and all of its many branches. Till next time, Cheers, from South Texas.

went kayaking this weekend for first time, went about 40ft. into river and flipped over, not sure what I did, my wife could not explain it either, but I think it had to do with how I was paddling from watching this, thanks.

Thanks....great video. As a Master swimmer, I work on technique all the time with my coach. Better technique, the easier, and more efficient the stroke. I Learned so much and can’t wait to apply to kayaking tomorrow. Just like swimming...legs drive torso, torso drives arms. Wish I could attend a workshop with you.

Great tutorial. Just started kayaking coz obviously we can't travel due to the pandemic. I took a beginner class and I found the way you explain the technique is way better than what I had.
