He most certainly was. He was babying him and telling him he would let him take on more responsibilities as he went and I hate that, that's discrimination. Sorry, a bit passionate, I'm autistic with a severe panic disorder and I always have fought through this. Not just me but my best friend too, shes also autistic and works in Healthcare, she has worked so hard to get where she is.❤had to edit, I believe Han said we can work up to more responsibilities, that's so degrading.

I haven’t seen nearly enough of this show or Dr. Han to give a full opinion, but I very much see where Dr. Han is coming from. With Shaun’s diagnosis and difficulties without that support net, he’s truly a liability to no fault of his own. He clearly targeted Shaun, but his reasoning is not entirely wrong. Shaun has undeniable skills in certain areas but struggles in the communication portion that is essential for the job.

Then you have those of us in our late 30s early 40s who had a late life diagnosis, or myself diagnosed with Extreme ADHD, and had so many people use it as an excuse. Instead of helping us learn things like common sense (me) they said "oh well it's the ADHD, that's about the best your gonna get." They limit us from potentials. I wasn't diagnosed with Autism until my late 20s early 30s. No one realized I have sensory issues. Using our LDs or CDs as an excuse to even give us a chance. Thankfully my mom didn't act like this but MANY teachers and school administrators did. No one could understand why I could never do the homework but Ace my tests.

as far as i can tell, dr han refuses to adjust to what shaun needs in order to communicate. he knows exactly how autism works and refuses to see from his point of view and is only capable of bullying his way through conversations. he shows this in previous interactions when he interacts with other people and they have to be the ones that adjusts to him. communication goes both ways and dr han refuses to even go half way, resulting in shaun having an increasingly hard time communicating with dr han properly until the firing scene. what an ass.

That's only partly true. You can learn from observing other people's interactions and even from reading. Being in social situations certainly is the most effective and fastest way but it doesn't give you the answers how the interaction would've gone between neurotypical people.
When you don't understand other people, you have to first observe them so that you can mimic them and over time you learn the best ways and it gets easier.

How to be a Doctor Han:
    1) Arrive at a new clinic as the head surgery manager and most importantly, DON'T LOOK INTO FILES OF THE PEOPLE THAT ARE WORKING FOR YOU.
    2) Be surprised and angry when the autistic doctor is blunt and direct with patients (shocker, I know, I think that being in med school you would have to take a side in psychology to know that that's how autistic people work and perceive the world and even if not at this current year that's probably common or at least easily googlable knowledge)
    3) Ask innapproriate questions during surgery to your other doctors and be disappointed when they get distracted because of it and screw something up. Proceed to shame them for it because they couldn't be focused and answer back their boss (their salary depends on him, so of course there's pressure to answer him even during surgery)
    4) Ignore the ideas from your autistic doctor who is extremely interested in the case, wellbeing and the surgery going well, but you dismiss it because it didn't go well beforehand in another hospital (which is fine) but then continue with them without giving him any credit and move him to pathology instead because he can't communicate well (essentially, demote him for being autistic, how dare he be born with the autism which makes his speech bad, he can't be a surgeon if he can't bow to me and talk without stuttering a bit, even though everybody else understands it.)
    5) Purpousefully rile your autistic doctor up in an attempt to make him angry because he dared not bow down to you when you were talking down on him
    6) Take his ideas, but let him stay in pathology, how dare he speak against you, he's not supposed to do that. Even though he's great at surgery, he'll never be as great as you (even though you failed to see the points he made)
    7) Demote him, even though he is technically doing work in your department (since you're accepting his ideas) and thus are not paying him for his labour (he's in a different department now, remember?) how dare he be autistic in front of my patients, they are going to look at me bad now, even though he's saving lives.
TL:DR; Be openly discriminatory to your "underlings" for their conditions which they don't control like autism, be surprised and angry when they show the effects of those conditions, demote them for not bowing down to your every whim and request and focusing too much on the surgery side of things (even though you're the surgeon head), and accept unpaid labour from them if they offer it to you BUT don't offer an opportunity for them to come back afterwards.
All in all, he deserved to get fired based on the unpaid labour part alone, the fact that he has a whole sheet of problems and issues with the department only a few months in after his arrival is enough to fire him immediately.
If this were real life, Murphy might have not been able to come back as a surgeon, but he would be able to sue both the medical centre for discrimination based on autism, unpaid labour and emotional damages (imagine studying all your life to become a surgeon, only for your boss to say no because you're autistic and basically ruin your record for life)

0:00 If communication and social skills were the issues, many doctors would be fired according to the situation of this episode. Medical practitioners are not social workers. We all have different gifts that are complimentary to others' talents. Professional Jealousy among team members creates a toxic working environment and negatively impact the services provided to patients. Bullies as played by Dr. Han's character oftentimes try diminishing the most talented person in the background and uses the person's intelligence to make themselves shine. The threat heightens when the person refuses to be put in a box and spoon feed their knowledge only when asked. Dr. Shaun was right to speak up for himself because Dr. Han would have destroyed him and the surgical team, and more importantly, the patients would get substandard care. I don't feel what Han did was wrong. His assessment was not due to personal bias, it was professional and objective judgment. While Shaun is good in diagnostic and in the OR, in terms of the full scope of a surgeon, he was lacking. He objectively considered Shaun strengths and weaknesses and placed him into a role that best fits his abilities.
Shaun had shown bad communication skills on many occasions, causing problems for the dept, Han shown recognition when a staff did well but critic when they did wrong. Shaun was not able to control his emotion, was aggressive and stubborn while Han still given him a chance.
Yes, he has Autism, but while everyone does like him, he has his limitations, Shaun tends to have people giving in to him and have things go his way throughout the show disregarding if he is actually in the right just because people know he has limitations.
Han was simply treating and judging him on the standard of any surgeon if he did not have autism, no one would bat an eye what he did was wrong but because he has autism, everyone is cuddling up to him and expect Han to provide special treatment which would not had been fair to any average others. I understand the premise of this show and what it’s trying to prove, but communication is a massive factor in that field. If I was a father and was told my wife’s anti-depressants are the reason for my daughters birth defect when that had no relation to the medical case I’d probably want to fight said man. The position Dr. Han was in, was an incredibly difficult one, and I don’t believe either Dr. Han or Dr. Murphy are the good/bad guy.

    Bedside manners are important.
    Communication is important.
These are stuff that may make the difference between life and death.
Shaun definitely needed to learn that he is not the center of the world. And he had to learn how to behave accordingly as a medical professional.
Shaun was treated as if he could do no wrong and that if he did something bad then it's fine because "he's autistic" . Like... It doesn't matter if someone is neurotypical or not. Actions have consequences and people in healthcare field have responsibilities.
Shaun was smart and he was skilled at doing surgery.
    BUT.
The way he was arrogant, had ego, was extremely bad at communicating with his team and with patients, and acted as if he could do no wrong, was making him a liability.
Han placed him in pathology. There Shaun could exercise his ability to communicate with his team better. Sometimes it's better to be in pathology for a bit, and after personal improvement he could eliminate the factors that made him liability, and he could become better surgeon.
And the other doctors indeed were making light of his condition. Excusing his behaviour was what they did. Which is wrong.

If he just was not that narrow minded andd a bit more like Melendez or Lim, he would recognize how much Shaun develops and that he is very great at what he is doing.

Dr. Shaun's mentors and supervisors failed him by not limiting him from inflicting harm while he learns interaction skills. Like "Don't EVER tell the patient something she did caused this until you discuss it with me first." He CAN be taught to fake kindness end empathy. Hiring him makes them responsible for curtailing the emotional harm he unknowingly inflicts by providing better supervision and stricter guidelines, he's just been running his mouth amuck. He'll never truly understand empathy, they are supposed to give him do's/don'ts for the sake of their current and his future patients, not just give him a global pass because it doesn't come naturally. This isn't on Shaun or Hahn, it's on those who have been watching him doing damage and not stopped it.

What do people even want him to do ? Take no action on a surgeon who walked away mid surgery ??
He didn't even fire the dude like he should have and just moved him to a field that's more suitable to him.
Shaun would have been fired in real life and it would be perfectly understandable. He shouldn't do the job if he is messing up that bad especially when a person's life is involved

Dr. Han is very logical and orthodox in his view. Instead of looking at Shaun flaws and attempting through time and error to see if his flaws are limits. He immediately went to cut the leg and say he was done. You also see by the way peers defended Shaun and his animosity towards anything he viewed against "loyalty" and the control of his staff. Dr. Han could have handled things far better. He is correct in many things but the methods used I would argue are borderline discriminatory

From before knowing Shaun he already disliked him for saying something to the mother about the pills, which she should have known since all pills come with a list of side effects or she should have told her doctors while pregnant.
But he pinned the blame of their distress caused by their own ignorance on Shaun
It doesn't get better from there since he only thinks of Shaun as an autistic creature that is below human, yet he takes every opportunity to use his intelect and hard earned skills to his benefit while insulting him to his face to the point he basically tells him "I don't like you in this job, so I changed your job,if you get mad its proof i was right"

    • @RainOn2SunnyDay
      @RainOn2SunnyDay 2 місяці тому

as far as i can tell, dr han refuses to adjust to what shaun needs in order to communicate. he knows exactly how autism works and refuses to see from his point of view and is only capable of bullying his way through conversations. he shows this in previous interactions when he interacts with other people and they have to be the ones that adjusts to him. communication goes both ways and dr han refuses to even go half way, resulting in shaun having an increasingly hard time communicating with dr han properly until the firing scene. what an ass.
he failed to ask why it's so important for shaun to be a surgeon, he failed to respect he's choice and instead forced him to go to pathology, he shoots down anyone's opinion on shaun both personal and professional, and every positive thing out of his mouth is manipulative with the goal of proving that he's own opinion is the only one that matters.
