This is a wonderful video! Thanks for taking the time to upload. I’m beginning Graduate School this fall in Counseling Psychology. My initial plan was to pursue a career in Criminal Psychology afterwards and looking into Doctorate programs. I am starting to wrestle with the idea of applying to Med School and pursuing a career in Forensic Psychiatry. Do you think it’ll be purposefully useful to complete my Masters before applying to Med school. I’m 27 years old. Thanks so much for your insightful videos. Joe
I feel like it’s a sign that I found ur channel I have been thinking about pursuing psychiatry. I’m 21 am I to late? I didn’t have the best grades and me myself have had some mental issues in the past I want to help others though
When I was a resident another resident in my year was in their 40’s. One can use one’s own emotional struggles to help patients. A significant amount of studying is necessary for becoming a doctor/psychiatrist. Peter Goertz
Hello Dr. Goertz was curious about the process of deciding whether a patient needs to be admitted into the hospital or not. And also how to know when a patient needs to be discharged? Thank you
As someone about to go into college under the major ‘neurobiology physiology and behavior’ this fall term, Is there any advice you have? I’ve always had an interest in psychology, neurology, and behavior. I have been wanting to become a psychiatrist since middle school, and I’ve been watching your videos recently. They have been a big help to see what this career path is like. I’m just a bit unsure of the steps I need to take in the future in order to continue to pursue psychiatry.
Hi Aisha, You will need to take required courses in college, however in my opinion it is important for people to enjoy themselves in college(and in life in general), both with regard to the courses you choose and with regard to extracurricular activities.
This is a great video. What do you think currently are some attributes of a great learning experience in terms of didactics and call ? What balance is needed ?
Thank you Sara! I am not the best person to answer your questions, because I am not involved in the overall organization of a residency program. As a psychiatrist I have found being on call to be a good learning experience for myself. Peter Goertz

Thank you very much! I don’t have an answer to your question, I am not involved in interviewing applicants for medical school. Peter Goertz
