Hey guys! On Weekend Wankshop 214, we are going to dive deep into the origins of Uncle Ben's extended range obsession, and talk about the top 5 riffs that made me want to start playing 7 strings so many years ago!
Around 2001, i got my first 7 string (a Schecter C-7 Diamond Series), but what made me want to grab a 7? I'll give you a hint: Its all stuff from before 7 strings were everywhere! On today's lesson, i'm going to be teaching you all some classic riffs from Dream Theater, Fear Factory, Meshuggah, Steve Vai, and, of course, KORN! These artists were all integral in setting me down the path of the 7 string.
Using a variety of guitars today. My Ibanez RG7421 swirl, another RG7421 swirl, my custom mahogany RG7, my mutant Road Flare Red custom RG7, and of course my beautiful Aristides 070. All played through my Kemper Profiler, using SinMix profiles.
What are the riffs that drove you to play 7's? Let me know in the comments!
What riffs made YOU start playing 7 strings?!
Fear Factory Self Bias Resistor,
Meshuggah - Beneath
Morbid Angel- Where the slime lives
Wake up and smell the Carcass
Carcass, for the same reason ( did not want to down tune a 6 ) Angel vivaldi ( J.C. ;) ) meshuggah. also Enjoy dropping opeth down to B standard on some songs. deftones.
Fear factory, coal chamber, korn then later on... I knew I needed a 7string after seeing a band in k-town called Humanfuse several yrs ago :P
Michael jackson-smooth criminal... Oh and after the burial-a steady decline
This should have been 7 riffs that made me start playing 7 string guitars.
Talk about a missed opportunity lol.
Did you make your own video yet?
"7 riffs that made me start playing 5 string guitars"
@@DefiantDEFI what a shitty and unoriginal response.
Like everyone else!
I think Conquering Dystopia really made me go holy shit I need a 7
Are there any UA-cam videos you haven't commented on?
ConqDyst and Alluvial both are what brought me back to 7 strings after playing 6ers for ages. Quite possibly two of the best instrumental metal projects ever made
Same man
Alluvial is so insanely good!
@@mikefearon3577 nop
Trivium's shogun is what made me pick up a 7 string, there's some great stuff on there.
ARC same
Of Promethius yo
Me too.
Kirisute Gomen made me buy my first 7 string
This and Dream Theatre's Dark Eternal Night
LOVE that Humalitive riff! Was obsessed with it as a kid lol
xisumavoid me too! PS your fanbase is MASSIVE! Share the wealth! ;)
@@BenEller Dude, you're not cool unless you have a verified checkmark next to your name like us. You're past 100k subs, so you can get it now.
DesignCourse well obviously I need that! Where do I apply?
@@BenEller Get on skype! (We're contacts there)
Just caught up on Hermitcraft and tbh was absolutely not expecting to find you here
Korn is definitely one of my big influences for wanting a 7 but lately I've been all up in Triviums business and I'm needing one even more
same here dude. KOrn & Trivium
To me it's mathcore/Djent.
One of the first bands I heard with this kind of sound was Erra, Plini, Gojira, modern day Babylon, and from there I fell in the rabbit hole
I used to listen to metalcore and deathcore, coming from a 90's hardcore punk basis, then I started enjoying the progressive metalcore bands and the solos and instrumentals from bands like Chelsea grin. I used to listen to thrash metal riffs from bands like artillery and kreator
Bought a 7 string specifically for Dream Theater's Dark Eternal Night
Same goes to me, as well as enemy inside, and some other tech death stuffs
That’s a fantastic riff!
Wow I thought it was just me ....
dark eternal night was my 1st song i learn on 7
Same
Trivium - torn between Scylla and Charybdis
Pablo Randri The Crusde
Trying to play Sadness Will Sear on a 6
Saw your stuff gojira does video and was instantly hooked! Great stuff man!!!
gojina
The whole Morbid Angel Domination album inspired me to to drop my tuning into the abyss.
Fear Factory - Demanufacture album, for me a timeless classic. Thanks Ben!
That swirl green is one of the coolest guitars I've seen in a long time
Sweet vid. For myself, Jeff Loomis of Nevermore with Enemies of Reality
Hearing Jeff Loomis on "This Godless Endeavor" made me want a 7 string with EMG's.
Trivium’s shogun was a huge inspiration for me picking up a 7 string, still remember it blowing my mind when it first came out. Then I listened to Icarus lives by periphey, I knew after that the 7 string guitar was forever going to have to be in my arsenal. Just for extra credit, meshuggah and after the burial made me obsessed with wanting to purchase an 8 string.
I expected more Hoobastank in this list..
GuitarVaultStore me too
No idea they where 7 string
@@jonw3462 thats the secret to their "stank"

I've learned more from Ben than anyone else on UA-cam. He really knows how to teach.
For me it was Korn, Fear Factory, Devin Townsend and Deftones.
I used to have only an acoustic when I started playing and used to downtune to like drop f# because I wanted to play Deftones so bad. Floppy as fuck to say the least.
I wanted a seven string since i heard Blind by KoRn
My two were easily Vai and Fear Factory.
I actually never had a 7-string, which is sad. My local guitar shop had a Vai 7 string this this pearl eye/triangle at the bottom. It was a $1,200 guitar they had hanging for years. They finally offered it to me for $700 once and I never went back for it (college came)
Still regret that to this day.
Unearth’s Zombie Autopilot did it for me.
Me too
Pretty much same as you but with Morbid Angel as well. The intro to God of emptiness is beyond crushing.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Dream Theatre’s Awake album, specifically Lie and Korn’s debut album hooked me in High school!
"Lie" and "Caught In a Web" is what did it for me. "Resurrection" from Fear Factory was my other big one
Keith Merrow got me into 7 strings. I heard his song The Arrival and it was all uphill from there. Figuring out those riffs without tabs was redonculus.
I just listened to his run through over and over of Pillars of Creation on the SD channel looking to hear the black winter. Made me want a 7, but I learned to play it in drop D. Still sounds pretty sick.
Why is YT showing me hair shampoo ads during this? I mean, Ben’s hair is a’ight, but this isn’t a Robert Baker vid or anything.
Lol totally j/k homes, you know your still my favourite uncle Unca Ben!
Funny comment but man, just use a free ad blocker lol
Hanson's "Mmmbop", why i bought an 8-String
😂🤣 yeaaah ee yeaaahhh!
I remember hearing korns shoots n ladders like 25 years ago and going, "Wow, I wanna make those sounds." Begged my parents for 4 years before they broke down and bought me a guitar. I still play everyday.
Wait a minute. If Vai is your dad, and you are my uncle, that makes Steve my grandpa. SWEET!
My Acid Words or The River Dragon has Come by Nevermore would be two riffs I'd pick for making me want a seven
Hell yeah, My Acid Words is so underrated
Basically every Scar Symmetry song made me need a 7, I learned the verse riff in Ghost Prototype I as soon as I got it and it's still my favorite thing to both play and listen to
Wow this is nearly all the same for me. I got my 7 in 1998. Meshuggah and Fear Factory were the main inspirations. My teacher was a huge Dream Theater fan so when I bought mine he bought one too so he could show me some of their 7 string riffs. Rock on.
Screw off Ben, I don't need to be buying more guitars.
DesignCourse sorry/not sorry!
You know you always need new guitars! What kind of player are you?
@@rafaelcarmo5562 a player that just bought a new guitar. Outta the question for now
@@DesignCourse I get it we ain't rich
Tendinitis- Jason Richardson has finally convinced me. There’s only so many times you can play it on a 6 string without feeling empty inside
Trivium - down from the sky was the final nail in the coffin for me
Such great videos Ben, I didn't know most of these songs but enjoyed you playing them
'Dead Heart in a Dead World' Anyone ??
Fuggin yes!
One of my Deserted Island albums!!
YES. Not the first 7 string album I heard, but it quickly became one of my favorite albums (and Nevermore one of my fave bands) of all time.
Yessir!
I was about to comment this, but then saw you beat me to it! Greatest 7 string album ever! \m/
That blue/orange swirl is GORGEOUS!
For me I believe it was just that simple intro riff to Dream Theater's "The Mirror".
CHUGG-CHUGG-CHUGG - CHUGG-CHUGG-CHUGG - CHUGG-CHUGG-CHUGG - CHUGG-CHUGG-CHUGG
intro riffs remind me of Meshuggah. Theyr early days was on a 7 strings. Recently got my 7 string guitar and its just amazing.
No
Youre amazing 👍
It reminds me a lot of New Millenium Cyanide Christ
Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment did it for me, everything else you could really get away with a 6 string for home playing but Acid Rain just sets you brain on fire with how cool it is and you really have to get a 7 stringer for that sweet sweet Petrucci song.
Ive been mucking around with guitar for ages now and finally about to get my first 7 string so this is rad, thamks dude🤘
Dude. Your BEADF#BE tuning video got me to fall in love with my RG again and opened up my creativity being able to explore chords in the lower register. Thank you!
Obviously Vai's Passion and Warfare made me go, "Damn, a 7 string would be sweet." Then many moons later Awake reignited that, "Damn, I should get a 7." Then A Change of Seasons hit the, "Gah... I need one!" Then many more moons later (in 09) I finally grabbed a 7 string. Learned ACOS and never looked back... to the 7 string. It just ain't my cup of tea I guess. Tried to write a tune on it a few times, but I just wan't inspired. I still noodle from time to time on it, to make it feel wanted.
The Mirror should've been on here. Everytime I pick up a 7,that riff and the intro riff for Soul Burn from Meshuggah comes up.
I fucking love your guitars man! The swirls are absolutely beautiful.
The WHOLE song A Change of Seasons. First project I undertook. Still my favorite thing to play on a se7en.
KILLER VIDEO! I recently got into Korn's stlye of "riffing" I grew up with them! My first concert was "Follow The Leader" it instantly changed my life. Now Im 39 and learning Korn on my new 7 string! Life is peachy! text-green-game-over
Thanks for breaking those down, you rule!
Ben has that clarity.
Praise be Uncle B.
Uncle Ben, me and my bud in high school totally got hooked on 7-strings based on Fear Factory riffs alone. So much "Self Bias Resistor" and "Replica"!
Good vid man. I myself have been playing 7-strings since ‘93.
Dude I (finally) jumped into the dark realm of 7 String about 7 months ago. For the ESP E-II Horizon FR-7. It was a challenge at first...it was like ‘Dude, this extra string is on the way!!’ But I just made a point to play that guitar every day and didn’t take long to get used to it. Love it, and naturally my style has shifted into more of a melodic death metal style.
Ben, please
You absolutely have to make a seperate video dedicated only to your guitars and stories of how you got them
Great work as always;)
Oh man, Dino made me want to pick up a 7 too. Linchpin is such a boss tune.
I got my 7 string just to play Kirisute Gomen by trivium
Rudolph von Stroheim I can respect this
Props man. That's a great song. Tough to play to.
I just got myself a PRS SE Mark Holcomb SVN in walnut green and the first riff I learned was the Dream Theater one you showed us🤘 it's so catchy could'nt stop playing it for almost 30 minutes
I love all your guitars, but the one you used for the Meshuggah song is my favorite!
I take it back, that purple one at the end... fuck!
HAPPY TO SEE HUMILIATIVE IN THE TOP! The None EP it's so good 👍
God damn. Replica! I'd forgotten that whole album; I need to dig it back up.
Hey Ben, big fan of your channel here! Was waiting for a new video to ask if you'd do a weekend wankshop on the infamous Vomit Riff from Lamb of God's song "Hourglass". I feel like it's a riff everyone gets wrong. Thanks again man for all your awesome music knowledge!
Love your channel Ben!! Can you make a korn video one day, with all your favorite songs?
Just bought my first 7 string guitar today! For me it was Deftones, Korn, and Emmure that made me want one. And I love it. Paired it with a Orange Crush 35RT.
It was definitely Fear Factory that got me into 7-strings as well, then I got into Meshuggah and didn't look back after that.
I guess I'd have to say Korn but, honestly, I just wanted to try one because so many people made it look cool. I bought a cheap (and I mean cheap) Douglas 7 and modified it thanks to watching your documentary of the road flare red Ibanez build.
Holy moly Ben that Aristides is nice!
Yeah man replica was my first song on the 7 string! Love Fear Factory :D
Great idea for a video. I'd make my own but it would be nothing but DT and Korn riffs. Yeah, I'm a dad ...
The Steve Vai riff was by far the best, the swing and bends just flow really nice
Nice to see some Fear Factory love! Seven Strings of Separation!
I thought you might have "A Change of Seasons" somewhere. Then the video starts with it. Much love and respect, Uncle Ben!!
For me it was pretty much the entire Shogun album, still dont have one though cause im too broke so i got the next best thing in a drop tune pedal. Still hope to get an actual 7 string one day, hopefully.
You can literally get a pretty decent Ibanez gio for like 200-250 dollars.
I haven’t a 7 string guitar, and for what I want to play I don’t net it. But it’s surely interesting and gives you maybe more inspiration 🤔
For me it was a general thing about low tunings... Arch Enemy, In Flames... that sort of thing...
But not kidding here, Uncle Ben, while i have been dabbling with the idea of a seven string for quite a while because of said bands, it was YOUR VIDEO about "That seven string tuning you have to try" that sealed the deal for me!
I have resisted only because I didn't want to change an extra string.. It's time to explore one
Thanks for changing guitar in each section 👍 makes skipping backwards and forwards easy
Korn & deftones got me into 7 strings, with the later introducing me to 8 strings as well
That natural wood ibanez with the last six scalloped frets is epic!
Love it! Very similar to you here - started discovering Korn here on the Tube, thought that Head and Munky's 7 strings were the coolest thing ever. Korn actually inspired me to start playing guitar, because power chords and so damn fun! Soon thereafter discovered Fear Factory. Was so used to Korn's filthy low guitar tone that Dino's super tight machine riffery was like an enlightening slap in the face. Like you, I just had to learn Replica and Self Bias Resistor. (Your cover of the latter is fantastic, by the way!)
Then I very quickly discovered Meshuggah. Changed the way I looked at music for the better. Saw them live in concert. One of my best life experience without a doubt. Plus, they use 8 strings. Like, how metal is that? So HEAVY. Animals as Leaders was supporting. Tosin Abasi. Holy (New MIllenium Cyanide) Christ...
These days, have a 7 string in drop A, with a big fat .070 for the low A. (Took some careful filing at the nut.) So inspiring - sounds beautiful clean and brutal dirty. Love it so much!
I bought mine because both of the bands I was in most recently were 7 string bands. Didn't even bond with it until I quit and was trying to sell it, but now it's the only guitar I play.
Watching Meshuggah play live as a support act for Machine Head in 1995 was my introduction to the 7strings. Those black Ibanezes with neon green pickups. OMG. Bought the Steve Vai UV777P in 1998 :D
Initially, it was Fear Factory that made me interested in 7 strings, and I got started with a washburn WG587. After that it was Dream Theater, so I got an Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci signature Majesty 7.
Love the Soilwork mention! Any chance of you doing a Soilwork lick in the future?
I just got my first 7 string yesterday, I'd say "Psychosocial" by Slipknot, Every Korn song and "Silence In the Snow" by Trivium really made me want a 7 string
Nice! It was Dream Theater's The Glass Prison that got me wanting a 7 string. Some belting riffs in there.
That first riff after the intro melody, the one with the wah accents, that's one of my favorite riffs of all time. It rocks so damn hard!
@@ryanhass8716 Yeah! I could never work out if that's wah or Whammy- and the internet doesn't seem to know either!! That first riff too though and the really earthy tone of it all
Love your guitars 🎸
Happy New Year 2019...
👍🎸Keep Up the Great Job and Great videos 🎸👍...
Worth it just to watch you play Animal. Now I'm getting a 7 string.
Thnx for this video. I wish it was a little more extensive although I know you were showing how to play the songs so that makes it tough. A second part to this video would be awesome! Oh and you are right about the sus on got the life!
Yeah, "Replica" by Fear Factory! Awesome song. I just covered it too.
Damn, I love Demanufacture and thanks for the Replica riff! Big time FF fan since 95
I just bought a 7 string ltd black metal, I can't wait for it to come in!
Another badass Meshuggah 7 string song is Future Breed Machine. Tight playing overall and monster tone. Also I seem to naturally be a sucker for B, Bb and A tunings, so that's a bonus to me. It's not one of their most progressive songs and doesn't have all the heavily divided rhythms you hear on a lot of their songs, but that doesn't take the awesomeness out of it. Meshuggah and Fear Factory are the prime reasons I wanna get a 7 string when I have the money for it!
Their whole first album is great tbh
I love Bb
Monuments is what did it for me. First song I heard by them was Atlas and was dying for a 7 after the first listen.
I remember looking at Trapt and Limp Bizkit tabs when I was young wondering why the hell they played 7 strings. A few years later I wanted to learn The Great Dividers by Unearth and that got me in on the 7s. Didn’t actually get a 7 until Rareform and Obzen came out (go figure, 8 string stuff). Never actually got an 8 and now I play a 6 about 90% of the time haha
I'm so in love with that Aristides
Just bought my first 7 string. So much fun!
I mess around a bit in drop D thought I’d try something lower. I kinda got an idea for a sound to mess with
Vai’s Passion and Warfare and I spent a long time saving up but never found one I could afford, then they disappeared!!! Years and years later, I was wearing a Mesa Boogie hoodie and Monkey from Korn was mingling after their show and commented on it. I said thanks and then BEGGED them to help get 7-strings back on the market. He said things were in the works!!
Dark Eternal Night by Dream Theater is absolutely what did it for me. I’ve been a 6 stringer for a while but I just bought a Jason Richardson 7 string in the new red color.
The Animal is one GOOEY riff. Awesome. I want a 7 string now, and I play country and rock.
