Margaritaville is a state of mind. The popularity of the song sparked the creation of the restaurant/bar. Jimmy became synonymous with the Key West lifestyle
Hi Britt. Jimmy did the song first. His popularity became a huge tidal wave. His fans (called parrotheads) were crazy for his music. He decided to open some Margaritaville locations and eventually his song Cheeseburger in Paradise also spawned a chain of restaurants. These and other business decisions led Jimmy to become a billionaire. He was considered a rock guy but his crossover favorability with country fans was huge too. In fact there is a song called 5 o'clock somewhere which he did as a duet with country star Alan Jackson. Appreciate the video this morning. Now go and put your feet up and start having the day that YOU deserve. ; )) Oh and that was steel drum that you heard.
I just want to hold her hand and walk her through the last 5 decades! She NEEDS to go back and start with SNL day 1 to see what people were REALLY up to all these years and what life was like because it was live and reflected pop culture EVERY WEEK. Y'all tell her!
@@theoddityshoppe the last 50 years have been something :) .. funny I grew up with 3 channels ota and then the 13 channel cable box, to 10' dish in the yard and the stuff we watched was great ...
A gazillian years ago, when no one had heard of Jimmy Buffett, I was riding in my buddy's VW BeIt was Come Monday. I asked, "Who is this, Roger Miller?" Before you call me a stupid jerk-weed (I probably am), remember I had never heard of Jimmy Buffett. Years later, I was at a club in New Orleans called Tipitina's Mardi Gras eve listening to The Meters when Jimmy Buffett takes the stage and plays a short set. There's a break and some of us went outside to powder our noses. I turned around and who did I se, but Jimmy Buffett. I said I had all of his albums back through "Rancho Delux." He said, "So you're the one." (who bought the album)
Jimmy had an entire catalog of fun and feel good songs. Some are introspective like "Changes of Latitude Changes in attitude" to fun like "cheeseburger in paradise" every album had a list of nuggets to find inside
"Come Monday" will touch your heart in such a joyfull, gentle, honest, simple way; the way good contemporary folk music tends to do.. It's a "Must Listen" for sure!
No Britt, this isn't country, its Jimmy Buffet. He is his own genre. Great reaction. You should react to "Son of a Son of a Sailor". Find the live version, You can thank me later.
He created several Margaritaville clubs/restaurants about 30 years after this song came out. He has another song called Cheeseburger in Paradise that he has marketed as well. He became a billionaire based on a couple of very popular novelty songs before he passed away.
On one of his live albums he answers the question about the location of Margaritaville, "... it's either in your mind or at the bottom of a Cuervo bottle". That about sums it up. Besides the fun party songs, he's written/performed some truly beautiful songs. He has a huge catalog worth exploring.

I knew Jim back in the late 1970's We used to hang at a small bar in Key West. He bought that bar, renamed it Margaritaville . That where it started. Behind the bar was a clock . The only numbers on it Where 5s. That's where the we get it's 5 o'clock somewhere comes from. Another great song.
The “Margaritaville” in the song, I’ve always believed, was not a physical place but rather a frame of mind, a laid back, alcohol induced party lifestyle sort of thing that you could live wherever you happen to be. And pop tops were the original removable tabs used to open aluminum drink cans. Prior to them you had to physically puncture the can with a can opener, then came the pop top which, when you pulled it off, would curl up and was definitely capable of cutting you if you stepped on it. Then came today’s version which opens the can but remains attached to the can. You youngsters missed out on so much lol. Good luck and can’t wait to see you back!!!♥️♥️♥️
Ah, yeah, there are lots of Margaritavilles around, all stemming from this song! Also, Cheeseburger in Paradise. I highly recommend so many of his songs - A Pirate Looks at Forty, Changes in Lattitudes, Come Monday, Volcano, He Went to Paris, Pencil Thin Mustache, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit, It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere... there are just so many lovely songs. He created a sort of laid-back, relax and drink vacation music vibe that is his own brand. I might stay away from 'Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw' - probably outside of your UA-cam rules :)
This little song launched an empire. At the end of his life, Jimmy was worth over 1 Billion with a “B” dollars. Don’t think he started out with that goal in mind but he tapped into a lifestyle that struck a chord with a lot of “Parrotheads,” myself included! He has quite the song catalog so enjoy your journey! And “Fins Up!!”
The line about "stepped on a pop top" is one you're too young to understand. Back in the 70s, when this song was written, soda and beer cans had a different type of opening. You'd pull on a ring, and the little piece of metal would come completely off. It was very thin, and the edges were quite sharp. They would also curve a bit as you pulled them off. And then people would throw them on the ground, where the curved and sharp edges would stick up. I think all of us who were alive then had the experience of getting a cut either on a foot or a finger from one of those things.
Ive never gotten in to his taped live performances much because he's so responsive to the audience, and I like to sing along. But I'll bet they were HUGE fun to be at!!!
You see how the song transposes you to, wait for it, Margaritaville? It is a state of mind and when you kick up your feet, no matter where you are you are in Margaritaville! I like that is loosens you and whoever is listening to it up and you just flow! Sunrise with a mamossa or sunset with a Margarita with his music puts you in a better place. Great video and glad you lile when Carribean meets calyspso meets fold and country! Stay beautiful young lady!
Jimmy passed away recently at 75. Great singer song writer and I am lucky to see him in concert a few times. What a vibe. And like people are saying he became a billionaire from concerts, merchandise, and restaurants. I think back in the 90's I read he was bringing in about 50 million a year and I don't think he ever had a #1 hit. But he made a lot of good memories for many people.
The song came first and became a hit. Jimmy Buffett built his Margaritaville resort, restaurant and bar business empire around this hit song. There are various locations around like in the Florida Keys and in Las Vegas.
Everyone has answered the which came 1st on Margaritaville, but I want to also share that his fan base was huge and very loyal! Not only did the have the nickname of Parrot Heads, but they followed him around from concert to concert, in RVs and even buses. They set up tailgating parties that put football tailgates to shame. I went to a concert complements of a local radio station and it was eye opening. I always liked Jimmy Buffet 's music, but had no clue any of this was going on. The concert was one of the best I have been to. Jimmy performed for about 3 hours, non stop. His band took a lengthy pause in middle, but Jimmy kept talking to the audience and showing videos of his Parrot Head fans on a big screen. He was barefoot, wearing cargo shorts and a tropical print shirt. It was great!
@jss27560 Yes exactly! My husband was a Deadhead! He roadied for the Grateful Dead in the early 70s, on the West Coast as a young man in the summers during college!
I used to live in Key West ,JB had a bar called the Green Parrot where he would play every third Saturday night when he was in town. When playing, it was just him, his guitar, and a pitcher of beer on a bar stool. Best Buffet ever!!! When in town he would stay on his sailboat at the Sunbeam marina. We lived across the street. This was the best time of my life, living in Paradise! RIP JB we will miss you!
Jimmy wrote the song and then created Margaritaville… he was worth over a billion dollars when he died. Jimmy got tired of seeing T-shirts with his name misspelled so he took over his own Marketing… There are Margaritaville hotels, restaurants, retirement communities, casinos etc…Jimmy was a genius!!!
This song was so iconic, it actually created a whole new marketing concept of Margaritaville type party destinations and still going strong today. It was absolutely a huge hit and made Jimmy very famous.

When this song was played at the bars I would go to in Texas, everybody would say where's the salt, where's the salt, where's the salt! When he would say that Frozen concoction that helps me hang on. Everybody would say hang on hang on hang on! He has a lot of good songs, that you would like!
Jimmy also did a song called Come Monday. He started out.sort folk music but quickly.evolved his.own sound. By the way I think all of of your followers were surprised to see this video post after yesterdays goodbye.🤗
Jimmy started out trying to make it in country... then he visited Key West. He fell in love with the lifestyle and stayed there. While he had more success on the rock charts, he inspired a generation of country artists, from Kenny Chesney to Alan Jackson (who shared billing with him on their #1 country hit, "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere". So many great songs from his catalog. A couple that get overlooked include "A Cowboy In The Jungle" and "Son of a Son of a Sailor" :D
Steel drums is the name of the Caribbean-type drums you are reaching for. I know there’s a whole new generation coming up that has never heard these older songs, but it still blows my mind when I see people react to Margaritaville for the 1st time, lol. This song was ubiquitous! Welcome to the club. 😊
Jimmy Buffett was amazing. His concerts were just a party. A chance to have a great time, and just love life. If you have a chance, check out the song called “Fins.” Rest easy Jimmy. Thanks for all the memories.
The drums you asked about are called steel drums. It gives that calypso sound. They were prominent in his music. Love your reactions. Keep up the good work!
There is a Margaritaville at the City Walk at Univeral Studios right before you get into Islands of Adventure. Just across the border from me in SC they have a Margaritaville retirement community for the seniors who still want to party.
Britt, the original Margaritaville is in Key West, Florida. How the song came about was Jimmy was a struggling guitarist and songwriter in Key West and asked the owner of the bar what he should do to get a hit song. The owner, a legendary barkeep, told him, "Why don't you write about that margarita in front of you." He did and the rest is history. Jimmy was one of the biggest booster of the laid-back Key West lifestyle. It made Key West one of the most popular tourist locations in the U.S. Every concert he gave had thousands of "Parrotheads" in attendance. He was catagorized as a country artist but many considered him Caribbean country artist.
Jimmy Buffett’s clever laid-back songs touched a wish for simplicity that grew in many of us boomers as life got more complicated. Buffett seems to have circled the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean like an aquisitive butterfly, picking up a little reggae here, some calypso there. Then he breathed some country chords on it all, so that the music gently filled his sails for leisurely cruise into our hearts. In my own case, when he sang about the Keys and the Caribbean, personal experience produced memories of islands in the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Siam, and a couple of hundred miles of the Mun River, the Mekong, and the Tonle Sap. Also, I’d guess that a very shrewd Jimmy Buffet didn’t get drunk nearly as often as he sang about drinking.
So sad to hear of Jimmy Buffett's recent passing. He was a great singer-songwriter, musician & actor. His songs had such a laid back island feel to them. I had a couple of his albums. He had a lot of hits especially in the 70's-80's such as “Son Of Son Of A Sailor”, "Come Monday", “Fins”, “He Went To Paris”, “Cheeseburger In Paradise”, “A Pirate Looks At Forty”, “One Particular Harbor”, “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes”, “Volcano”, “Boat Drinks”, “Pencil Thin Mustache” etc.
Jimmy was the King of Caribbean themed music. Margaritaville is not a physical place in the song. It's a state of mind. You can be in Manhattan and still be in "Margaritaville". The song is about a guy just chilling on an island enjoying the Caribbean lifestyle and Margaritas. This song spawned the Margaritaville chain.
Awe,..part of the fun of his videos is watching them. Not just the lyrics. He's just so awesome. Millions and millions of people miss him so much. Margaritaville is about h im getting drunk and drinking Margaritas.
If you want a deeper song, and one if my favorites from Jimmy Buffet, try “A Pirate Looks at 40”. Definitely something to look back on when you reach middle age or in the song’s reference age of 40.
The song came out in 1977. At that time, there was no such thing as Margaritaville. It was just a clever, tongue in cheek way of saying he was drunk on margaritas. The song is basically his view of what Margaritaville would be like. In the song, apparently, his woman left him of his own doings, and some people were saying it was her fault. The first chorus ends with him saying it’s nobody’s fault. Then, he goes to “It could be my fault”. Then it ends with him taking full blame with “It’s my own damn fault”. Jimmy had even had several people ask him after the song came out where Margaritaville was, and he said, “It’s anywhere you want it to be. It’s in your mind”. The Margaritaville clubs/restaurants came many years later. I’ve had their food there. It is really good. Went to the one in Panama City.
Jimmy Buffett was recently referred to as the godfather of lifestyle. His music is about escapism. Concerts were epic. Been to a few and margaritville’s myself.
Virtually the same age of Jimmy, his music was the story of a "Chill" life, well lived and frequently introspective. Must listens are "He went to Paris", "A Pirate Looks At 40", and "Come Monday". I was fortunate to enjoy him my entire life.
He created Margaritaville. It is a place in your mind initially. Now, there are hotels and housing developments. He made a $1.5 billion fortune from this. It's how to relax. Listen to some of his other songs to get the vibe.
Jimmy Buffet was one of my all-time favorite concerts! It is like going to a big party wolith a bunch of fun and light-hearted folk. I grew up woth his music - he was - and will always be - a legend that made an incredible, lasting impression on people. You cannot help but smile listening to his music
Song tells the story of a man goes on vacation, gets drunk, and gets a tattoo. And it’s named after the drink. Of course it’s a Country song! It’s also mentioned in Alan Jacksons, 2003 tune, “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.” It’s a nice follow up, and Jimmy Buffett is featured in that. Song reached number 13 on the Billboard Country chart in 1977. Crossover from Pop and Adult Contemporary. Made reappearance on Pop and Country charts after his death.
I'm completely on the rocks, no fancy fruit, lots of salt on the rim, icy cold!! My favorite. I love you sharing your musical journey so much, I'll forgive you the sugar. 😂
Jimmy wrote so many good songs and most have that island feel but my favorite is one that is a little different. It’s a song about missing his wife called ‘Come Monday’
When this came out your return flight was sometimes referred to as a flip flop and stepping on a pop top could also mean getting too drunk to function. So that line could mean getting drunk and missing your flight home and, hence, staying in Mexico all season.
I could go on and on about Jimmy but just would like to say, thank you for your videos. Been watching for some time now and enjoy your reactions. Especially one. Yours truly, Colonel Angus.
Hello Britt, I am sitting in my favorite chair watching your channel, enjoying a cocktail while wearing a t-shirt from the Margaritaville in Grand Turk BWI. My wife and I picked a couple up from their gift shop on our last cruise. Really enjoyed the food, atmosphere, fun and of course, the Margaritas!!!
Another great reaction! Buffett was kind of a movement and still is among a large fan base. Sort of like Elvis, The Beatles and Whitney Houston. A note: 4th Impact has a new video for their original song "Distorted". Worth a watch. Hope the baby comes soon as I can imagine you do?
I saw Jimmy in concert 8 times, the first time with my parents and my boyfriend (who later became my husband), they introduced me to him when I was a young teenager. I lost my husband three years ago but was fortunate enough to have been able to take my kids with their significant others to his concert last summer…they grew up listening to him as well as hearing us talk about him and his concerts. What great memories we made around our tailgates and summer nights listening to Jimmy, he will be missed but always loved.

It all depends what it is. My go to drink is Bailey's Irish cream in some type of ice cream.
Yes Britt Jimmy Buffett created Margaritaville. It a place he alone invented and is now celebrated around the world.
... "Old men in tank tops, cruisin' the gift shops. Checkin' out Chiquitas down by the shore..." :)
He was
catagorized as a country artist but many considered him Caribbean country artist.
Smart and sweet reactions. Hoping you react to another great vacation song, “It’s 5:00 Somewhere,” with Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson.
Jimmy was just an all-around chill dude. Rest in peace my friend
RIP jimmy B. I am so glad i got to see you live. You were diffidently on of my hero's.
Margaritaville is a beach chair in the sand, sun fading to te west, boiled shrimp on the breeze, 'Rita at the ready.
“Come Monday” a great song deserving your reaction.
Buffet had his own genre. Island Rock or Trop Rock
Once again friend you're over thinking, "Margaritaville" is a state of mind. Meaning it wherever you are with the right mind set.
Absolutely.
Everything margaritaville is Jimmy. He built and empire off one song.
Jimmy was a legend! He was known world wide...played everywhere!!! His concerts and their party atmosphere is legendary!
Britt, just want to say congrats and wish you and you expanding family all the best. I've enjoyed your channel and hope you'll be back.
Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett did one of Alan's songs together. It's 5 oclock somewhere!
Jimmy Buffett was recently referred to as the godfather of lifestyle. His music is about escapism. Concerts were epic. Been to a few and margaritville’s myself.
Jimmy had so many timeless songs, many hits but for me A pirate looks at 40 was my absolute favorite
I feel like Jimmy was a music genre all his own.
Virtually the same age of Jimmy, his music was the story of a "Chill" life, well lived and frequently introspective. Must listens are "He went to Paris", "A Pirate Looks At 40", and "Come Monday". I was fortunate to enjoy him my entire life.
It's fun seeing young people discover that there is music aside from rap. It's a real hoot as us old codgers like to say!!
Jimmy Buffet wrote most of the songs he sings. Hes also written several really good books. A completely different song of his is He Went To Paris.
good topic great video girl greetings from Uruguay ❤😊✌️
I first heard of "Margaritaville" in the song, then a lifestyle.
Jimmy wrote so many good songs and most have that island feel but my favorite is one that is a little different. It’s a song about missing his wife called ‘Come Monday’
That was his early days, right, in the LA song frenzy, before he had locked in to the tropical vibe. Love that song.
When this came out your return flight was sometimes referred to as a flip flop and stepping on a pop top could also mean getting too drunk to function. So that line could mean getting drunk and missing your flight home and, hence, staying in Mexico all season.
He also made margarita machines for home use. I have one. He’s the original pirate.
I was 8 years old singing along to this when it came out. Probably explains a lot about me now.
RIP Jimmy, you brought us a lot of smiles
Famous Song a Classic. A drink and a way of relaxing on vacation.
It doesn't matter your latitude Margarita Ville is an attitude
Jimmy and his band the coral reefers hung out around bars and dives around Florida on the boat for years. Son of a Sailor is another great song
Britt, You Are gORGEOUS AND Awesome....
What great memories we made around our tailgates and summer nights listening to Jimmy, he will be missed but always loved.
another legend from Mississippi. there must be something in the water. His music really does make you feel good. fun
frozen with salt
Gonna miss you Britt.
Hurry back.
I think you can't help but have a Beautiful Baby.
Jimmy came up with the song, then as his popularity increased, Margaritaville restaurants started appearing.
You have been living under a rock!
Love Buffet....can't believe nobody in the comment section hasn't said my favorite....The weather is here I wish you were beautiful!!!
I think possibly the only thing more fun than listening to Jimmy Buffet might be watching a BrittReaction to his music
Everybody knew every word to this song when it came out. Thanks for sparking my memories.
