my dog has this severe separation anxiety. imagine, you just go to you bathroom or bedroom, then once you come out, he's crying and very excited and running crazy like you don't see each other for a year.

I see 2 other posts saying what I think !😊
Dear Bruce should have a companion....
      There's a sweet video somewhere
here on UA-cam, where an anxious
dog has a cat pal, who comes to sit
      with him, snuggles up and
      comforts him, then you see
      the dog calm down...
      Lovely !
      They DO have feelings !

Absolutely! Most mammals are hard wired to live in social groups and to belong. The problem for Bruce (and for humans who behave like this) is that this sort of behaviour doesn't lead to mutually loving relationships. The behaviour is so stressful for the other party that it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy - dogs and people who act like this do tend to end up alone because their behaviour is so distressing for others. And then they end up eliciting the very behaviours they are trying so desperately to avoid. It's just a thought..

Dogs are smart and sensitive. Giving them lots of praise will make them feel happy and secure. When your dog does something good, praise him a little too loudly. This will make your dog feel affectionate, which will fill his heart and help him grow up healthy. It is also important to enjoy walks with your dog. A walk is an important opportunity to experience many things together with your dog. Talk to your dog, give him treats while walking, make eye contact, etc., and deepen your relationship with your dog by communicating with him.

Tone and pitch is important. Dogs may not speak english but they pick up on speech patterns. For example the tone or pitch of your voice when you are angry, happy, excited etc. When you praise dogs for doing something well its not about volume its actually more about pitch. Speak in a higher voice as you may dog when youre happy and your dog will recognise that.

This is my recuse dog to a T. He was year old when we got him and already been through 4 families. He would go completely insane when we would leave him. Chewing up walls and window blinds and everything else. So we tried leaving him outside, every single time he would find a way to get out. Jumping fences, digging holes, literally climbing the fence. It was awful and so so sad. We had no idea how to handle so we literally would take him everywhere with us. He was okay if we left him in the car for a bit but ya know, it was absolutely impossible to really do anything. He had already been through so many families I knew we had to just deal with it or it wouldn't end well for our sweet boy. Here we are, 4 years later and he's calmed down a lot... which I believe has a lot to do with the fact that we did take him everywhere with us and that last year we got him a younger sister to tire him out. Bruce is literally my boy Axel 4 years ago. Even looks like him lol good luck!

The best way to deal with this is to change the routine. He knows exactly when they’re going out because he knows his owners routine. When he sees his owners getting their coats on and getting their bags/keys/shoes etc... he knows they are going to leave the house soon and because of that his anxiety starts building up and up.
Change it up. Grab your keys, bag and coat, walk to the door and then sit back down. Do it over and over again until the dog has little to no reaction. Then start with the desensitisation of opening the door, then leaving the house for a minute and walking back in. Keep doing this. It helps him know that, just because his owners are getting ready, doesn’t mean they will actually leave the house. Instead of him knowing 100% that they’re leaving the house, he’ll instead think that there’s other outcomes to them getting ready such as sitting down on the sofa with him.

The best way is to put the dog in a crate with a Kong toy with frozen food in it, because it doesn’t seem so empty to the dog and the dog has some snacks to much on. Maybe a tv in the other room so that the dog thinks that you are just in the other room.

My neighbour has a little dog that barks and cries from the moment they leave, to the moment they return from work.
It's truly horrible for all the neighbors because it's all day; after a while it makes you feel nauseous and so stressed out because it just won't stop.
The disturbing thing is, they know it's separation anxiety but they like that it misses them so much, so they ignore it.

My brother's dog had speration anxiety for years. When he first got him and my brother and I left him alone with my two dogs and we thought he'd be ok. Wrong. When we got back he had messed up the dining room by knocking plants off the window sill, things off the table etc. Finally we took him with us and left my two at home which wasn't fair to them. Finally at the age of 7 we left the 3 of them at home because we had a family wedding to go to. We blocked him in my brother's bedroom and when we got back he was ok and so was the house. He'd slept on my brother's bed the whole time. Now we leave them all home but for one problem, they use the place as a bathroom even though we take them out before we leave. I think all dogs have speration anxiety to some level, some are just worse than others. Give them something that has your scent on it might be helpful too. God bless.

My mom had surgery and had to suffer listening her cry for those 6 months whenever I went to school eventually I figured I should leave something that smells like me for her on the couch which helped but only time lessoned her anxiety. She learnt that she would not be abandoned when we left.

Idk if you’re looking for advice but I’d really recommend to change up your routine for whenever you’re about to leave. Make sure you don’t do things in a particular order because that’s when your cat would start to get anxious. Also play with him/her for as long as possible before you leave so he/she is tired and can sleep through your time away. There’s also things like feliway that can help, it’s cat hormones that have a calming effect on cats. Some people like to use it on the create they take to the vet for example. Also, have you considered getting a second cat?

I’m the complete opposite to Bruce. Social anxiety

  • @sarat.1744

My girl had separation anxiety like this too after I rescued her. So I learned everything I could about that. We got a personal coach, had weekly obedience, had approximately 3h of exercise a day (an hour and a half just in the morning before I would leave for work) and went to a behaviorist to help us. We tried medication too but that was a terrible mistake as it changed her personality completely and she was starting to become less sociable. The worse about this kind of medication is that you can't stop immediately either if something goes wrong...you have to gradually decrease the dose until you can stop. I would have tried the behavioral techniques BEFORE putting him on any kind of medication, leaving that for a last resort only solution.

So have you found a solution? Just got my boy 3 days ago and he's doing this. Cries all day, doesn't destroy anything, but just whines and cries for hours and I'm scared the neighbors might report us. I already tire him out with 3 miles minimum of walking a day (he's only 14 lbs). But I just don't know what to do. i tried frozen Kong, puzzle treats, everything he just doesn't care about them the moment I leave

      @sarat.1744 Рік тому

@@deSeriosa yes, I did. She did calm down after a while. I lost her last december to cancer by the way.
I ended up crating her on a coach recommendation. I tought her the crate was her personal and safe space. I went in there with her, I fed her in there. After a few days she started going in on her own with the door open. I crated her during the night too but never when I was at home awake and I came back home during my lunch break to get her out for a 45min walk.
It took commitment but it worked. A few weeks later i started leaving the door open and I would often find her in there when I got back home.
I also learned to ignore her while leaving and coming back home. I did pretend-leave (you go in and out a loooot of times and increase the time while you're out all the time. I even skyped while out at some point.
Something worked because she became the best girl ever.
      Good luck to you!

@@sarat.1744 Thank you for your response and sorry for your loss. I will try crate training because previous owner didn't crate train him and do more pretend-leave.

Bruce could use some toys that help to stimulate his mind and off his anxiety. Puzzle balls where he has the find the treats hidden in them.

My dog had seizures whenever she was away from me, has anyone else experienced this? I had her for 10 months (without problems) before leaving her at daycare. She had a seizure when boarded over night. My cousin dog sat, she had a seizure over night. Any time she was away from me for more than like 24 hours it triggered seizures.
If someone dogsat her in my house, she would be okay. But being in a foreign environment eventually she had seizures. She never had them when I was around. I can't find any literature about this.

Wow! I would not have the patience with a dog like that. Also, not sure if this "treatment" will work as they don't show the outcome. Sure, putting him on drugs to mellow him out will do something, but if I were those owners, I would have lost my patience long ago and put a muzzle on him (one of those velcro ones) to keep him from barking/howling like that. I think a much more effective strategy would be to let him howl and wait for a break in the noise, walking in the moment he's quiet. If he learns to associate him behaving quietly with people returning, that might stop the howling. Just my two cents. As the doctor says, unwanted behaviour should not be rewarded with attention either.

I mean that means ya don’t need a dog any dog can turn out like this it’s not not the dogs fault it’s the owner lack of exercise lack of mental stimulation lack of daily routines when you get a animal your lifestyle changes especially on breeds who needs a dog if you just going to look at it or sit around all day then get a breed that’s not as active but anyway like I said it’s the owners fault and they eventually got the help from a professional

Because in my country doctors aint giving any medication for it, and it was very very clear that you couldnt leave the dog alone just for two secs. He would be screaming like crazy.. To be in SO much fear I dont think is fair to anyone

How ironic that this dog looks a lot like that dog next door-gray spots on her body and ears and a patch of dark over the same eye. That dog next door acts like this as well. I have suspected this since they first brought that dog home it had separation anxiety. But I know they aren't going to do anything to help this dog. Those people don't deserve to have any dog.
