- Fallas is becoming more and more well-known around Spain and the world. I didn't know anything about it until after moving to Valencia. It's a wild festival that happens every March featuring fireworks, parades, bands, parties, special clothing, paella competitions, explosions, burning of statues, and... did I mention fireworks?
In this video I cover some of the basics like the history and some of the traditions and rituals typical of Fallas. I also discuss the various feelings people have toward the festival - both positive and negative. And I'll even share my own limited American opinion.

I live in Valencia and never miss Fallas, actually try not to sleep to see as much as possible. I'm in the "Love" tribe!
For info, the Falleras dresses costs at least 1500€ - for a kid. Some dresses can go up to 12000€. And each of them is unique.
You forgot the despertà, which is the tradition of... waking up everyone, from the Wednesday to the Sunday of Cremà, at 8am with ONE HOUR of mascletà in every barrio. This one is hardcore. Well, even more hardcore then the others.
My favourite moments are the Nit de l'Alba and Nit del Foc (this year was grandiose), two massive fireworks with mascletàs at the end. Valencia is the city that hosts the highest number of fireworks per year in the WORLD. Yes. During the Nit de l'Alba you have more than 250 fireworks in a few hours. And each of them is like the most beautiful you may have seen in your life. This year the budget was 80% higher than last year, so...
And the cremà, when they sing the hymn of Valencia, everybody cries, very emotional.
Valencia is filled with celebrations... all the time. People here have a specific vision of life: everything is about the community, be together, and enjoy life.

Great intro to Fallas for Americans Erica. I think you could do a follow up this year and cover some other traditions like Nit del Foc, la Despertá and of course don’t miss the mascletá this year. Best to go a few times and start judging each of them with your friends.
Como fallera te diré q para mi son las mejores fiestas del mundo.para ti el 4 de julio será lo mejor. Por cierto ese día es mi cumpleaños. Las fallas hay q vivirlas y entenderlas.No es lo mismo vivirlas en la capital q en cualquier pueblo.Las mascletas es un espectáculo único y si quieres oírla bien hay q estar en la plaza . En buen sitio y en primera fila. La ofrenda es uno delos actos más importantes .lucidores donde las falleras desfilamos con protocolo y lucimos la indumentaria q es única. Hecha a mano. Los vestidos son de seda. Si son caros pero es el vestido más completo y lo q lo forma lleva dedicación. Tiempo . Es artesanía y tb decirte q las fallas Dan trabajo a mucha gente.modistas. peluquería. Maquillados. Floristas. Pirotécnico. Artesanos. Comerciantes..si la fallas empiezan antes del 1 al 19 las mascletas y la semana fuerte del 15 al 19.el casal es donde nos reunimos y dd se hace falla pq se trabaja todo el año para poder hacer falla cdo se termina el ejercicio.para q todo el mundo vea,la fiesta y la disfrute los falleros trabajamos todo el año. Nos reunimos en el casal. Que don plantas bajas si. Habilitadas y en fallas carpas pq esta toda la comisión y dd se vive la fiesta luego se recoge todo el 19 cdo acaba y el día 20 es como sino hubiese pasado nada. Ah por cierto el polar lo llevamos en la falla para abrigados o tb como identidad de cada falla . El color es opcional es el q quiera la falla. Ah por cierto tb llevamos el blasón q es lo típico junto con nuestro pañuelo al cuello es la ropa de casal y puede ser como tu quieras y tb puedes llevar las recompensas falleras q son los años q eres fallera y q para los falleros es un orgullo. Ah te has olvidado de la música no solo están las verbenas.sino las bandas de música q acompañan a las comisiones. Valencia es ciudad de música. Arte . Luz. Escucha el paso doble VALENCIA y tb el Himno.valencia hay q vivirla y sus fiestas tb las fallas . Tb te has olvidado de las calles iluminadas. De los premios. De los tentempiés q son los buñuelos y el chocolate. De nuestro plato típico la paella. Ah por cierto hay de todo te pueden gustar. No te pueden gustar pero hay respeto. Los falleros disfrutamos y respetamos. Pero siempre hay de todo gusto y opiniones diferentes. Nuestra Mascleta es pólvora de Paz . Y hay q vivirlo. Te invito a q vuelvas y las disfrutes.
Fantastic overview of Fallas! After 3.5 years in Spain, I haven't been to Valencia yet but would love to get to Fallas someday just for the experience. We almost went this year, but decided not to last minute. Luckily, it's not too far from Madrid, so maybe we can make the trip next year!

I experienced my first fallas as well. It was enjoyable and the noise levels reached a crescendo during that last week. I agree that it's really long and given that I live in the city center, it got a little crazy at times. I will probably leave town next year 😆

It would be nice if you could comment on your impressions about Holy Week (Sevilla and Málaga) or the carnivals of Cádiz (specifically the comparsas and chirigotas contest).
Good idea, though I was out of the country during Holy Week this year. But a great time with many traditions.

Por qué el título está en español y el vídeo en inglés? Sin ni siquiera subtítulos en español. Ya que el título es en español, imagino que es para captar público en español.

Valencians must be deaf after Fallas! I like everything but the loud fireworks. Did you see anyone wearing sound-deadening earphones?
I know, right? No, they actually say that blocking your ears can be harmful, that you should keep them free and keep your mouth open. Not sure the science on that.
A nadie le puede no gustar lo de las fallas. A ver, se queman cosas y hay explosiones por todos lados, eso le gusta a todo el mundo.
Bueno a mucha gente les gustan pero hay bastantes valencianos que las odian también, jejeje.
Para mucha mucha gente, solo es divertido comer y beber ¡Sodoma y Gomorra!! Todo lo demas de las Fallas es un incordio ¡Que cada cual disfrute de lo que su cultura interior le haga feliz!!! y sobre todo que respeten la tradición de las Fallas, ¡Que mas molestan los bares con la gente gritando y nadie se queja!!!
Un edificio no un local que se llama casal,las fallas son todo el año en los casales fallero pero lo grande de las fallas empieza el ultimo domingo de febrero con la Crida ,los petardos q tiran por las calles suelen ser de gente no fallera ,la noche de los niños o dia es el 14 y 16 recogida de premios inf.,infórmate un poco mejor
Curioso que una fiesta que utiliza de un modo festivo sea analizada por una estadounidense, ciudadana de un pais donde la pólvora mata 40.000 personas al año en tiroteos de todo tipo.

Hay ruido, colores, música, fiesta, trajes increibles, cultura y 850 monumentos. Y nos lo pagamos nosotros.

Joder como te pones, yo he sido fallero durante años y luego he disfrutado la fiesta igual como un valenciano mas y aún lo hago pero cuando tienes que trabajar el día siguiente o simplemente no soportas tanto el ruido constante porque estresa pues estas deseando que se acaben ya y es normal
If you didn't go to a Mascleta ... well you ain't seen nothing yet.
or rather heard. Mascleta is such a unique event and experience you'll not get anywhere in the world.
