The key to doing this, is to use that allen wrench or similar object to wedge into the hole to hold back the tension. I was almost afraid to try this myself until I saw your video. It was such a breeze to change out my old belt and replace with a new one. Thank you so much for your video help!
In the middle of an alternator replacement, I'm ready to search every repair video possible on that vehicle, and hit thumbs down out of frustration. Good informative video, straight and to the point. Thank you for uploading it.
Thanks that Allen key trick helped it was just so tight trying to fit the belt up in there. Oh and the diagram thank bro. Took me a whole 15 mins to change.
Great video bud ! I would replace that clamp, They use flex clamps so the aluminum can expand and contract without cracking the housing. If you stick your hand in there your getting cut, I took a dremal and grinded the sharp edge off of black thing that holds the lines.
Do this job from underneath with a dual flex head ratchet from Harbor Freight. It ratchets to get it to the point of placing the allen wrench in the hole - 15 min maxium.
Just curious what other idler pulleys or tensioners I would need to change beside the belt? I assume if it’s around 15 years old, it’s probably time to change some of those?
You can Change all the pulleys that you see that are on the belt however my rule is I don’t mess with stuff unless it’s giving me a problem because I can create a problem by thinking I’m being proactive.
Good video. However could not rotate tensioner CCW fully to engage Allen wrench. I believe it is easier as follows. Place the 14mm box end wrench on the tensioner from the top. Use a 1/2” copper tube which you cut to length and flatten at the upper end to avoid interferes. Place round end over leading leg of the open end wrench. Rotate wrench/tube CCW and secure under motor mount.
I found it easier from the bottom to take off tension and place the allen wrench in hole. I used a normal closed end wrench with arm muscle and did it without leverage. Perhaps I'm stronger then I think and I'm 71 years old. I have a Toyota Avalon 2015.
Where exactly you put your jack stands at? I have the same Camry and just want to make sure i don't get them brake into the saloon, very informative video!
I didn't get it what you're using that allen wrench for I'm also when you use and wrenches like that hook another box end wrench into the open-end wrench to extend your Leverage
@@HowToDoitright oh ok thanks tried to replace alternator and when i put everything back on i turned on the car and the belt came off the pulleys was worried if i messed something up
So, my tensioner started making an awful noise. Knew what it was and I called a shop to see how much they'd charge and I got quoted 1000 usd to fix. Is that about right?
@@HowToDoitright Thats what I thought. I just called a random shop just to see. Honestly it sounded like he didn't know what I was talking about in the first place 😂

I would HIHGLY recommend you NOT use a 9/16" short wrench from the bottom and try to place an "allen wrench stopper" while trying to hold the tensioner--good way to mash your left hand/wrist should you slip(and you looked like you were struggling just to hold it)
Good video. However could not get the Allen wrench in place on my Avalon. Consider the following which worked well. Install 14mm box end on tensioner from top. Use a 1/2” copper tubing cut to length and flattened at the upper end to avoid interference. Install unflattened tube end over leading leg of open end. Rotate tube/wrench CCW and secure under motor mount. This allows plenty of free movement to install/remove belt.
Very clear. I delayed my belt change on the car. Now after watching your video, I am brave enough to change it myself. Thank you.

I did this on a 2015 Toyota Avalon. It matched up very close.
Thanks for making this video, it helped me change my serpentine belt, with no problems.

I did the same job, my hands were all cut up and I got pretty skinny hands. Its a tight fit! I'll get a 4 banger next time XD
You didn’t wear auto working tight gloves
@@HowToDoitright You sir, are correct. I didn't even use my nitrile gloves and I won't make that mistake again

What is the length of the serpentine belt
Does this mess with the engine timing
No it does not. Only thing that will mess with engine timing would be if you open the engine and mess with internal components b

Maybe misalignment. Make sure belt is all the way in properly
At what interval should I change mine ? My Avalon is a 2010 with 64 K miles . What interval did you change yours ?
Yes it’s been 11years. The age kills it along with mileage. I suggest change it. Not worth waiting and if belt breaks it’s a bad bad day.
@@HowToDoitright I’m having my mechanic 👨🔧 change it out tomorrow. It’s too cold 🥶 outside for me to be messing with that lol

It was way easier if i stated hanging the new belt with the power steering pomp.
