- Hey guys, in this video I'm showing off the Vox amPlug 2 Metal, it's a very neat piece of gear to have around, but can you get a passable metal tone out of a $40 matchbox sized amplifier? Watch this review and decide for yourself!

I'm a bass player that still has a guitar from high school. I was gonna watch this video to see if this would be a good little guy to use with it for now just to get me playing and building skill again. Then you insulted my people so no I can't finish the video.
Just kidding, great demo, great quick review. Definitely will get one of these amplugs.
Hahah cheers man!
Truth be told. Us guitar players love our bass players
@@sgtjeremyh yep 🤘
@@sgtjeremyh But only tell us that when we're upset :(

It’s been a running joke for decades, man. Haha
Band members talk smack on their bandmates, just giving them a hard time.
Every member of the band gets burned at some point in time. Haha.
My girlfriend bought this for me today and that tiny thing is an absolute beast. Don't even think about it for practicing and songwriting on the couch with your beer. Nice review man!
Thanks man, it really is great! Also that's girlfriend goals right there when they're buying you guitar gear :D
Your girlfriend is a tiny little beast or the Vox thing?
Jokes aside, this looks good
@@LeeJoRo 1 year later I can confirm that my EX-now-gf was the beast indeed. I'm toxic free now man 😂
@@philthe2nd wow.... Sorry dude lol. How is the vox thing holding up...? (I just ordered one)
@@LeeJoRo they threw away the vox, destroy everything a beast leaves behind
Have one of these my self great tone
First 40 seconds and sold, cheers dude 👍
I just bought one of these recently and it’s definetly a killer lil amp ! I just ordered the mini cab to go with it today so looking forward to jammin on it with that as well !
Nice!! :)
I'm buying one because I mostly jam out but my mom hates me using my amp because of how loud I have it. I love cranking my amp to about 6 o'clock to get my sweet Thrash Metal tone with scooped mids.
Six a clock? That’s at the very bottom
Nice work with Stricken - I love that track.
I'm debating buying one of these and saw in another review that you can get 3 versions of each effect by picking the effect - eg Chorus, then using the FX and Power button together to toggle 3 levels of chorus. I guess that's not in the manual - but does fit in with the Vox "standard" - I have a VT40x modelling amp and the effects have 3 levels as well.
I may put a tiny bit of tape on the volume know to stop it moving while playing :)
Thanks bud, I'll have to check out the level thing next time I play on it! :D
I bought the the Metal version for my Bass. I got mine from SWEETWATER. I also purchased a 3.5 mm to 1/4 in cable (7ft was the longest available. Having said that I was able to drive the old lady downstairs crazy within 3 minutes! Sounds pretty damn good!
Nice! :D
Just bought the bass version. Am buying the metal version as well.
I believe you’ve talked me into getting one, man! 🤘🏻
\m/
This product is great for practicing!
The distortion isn’t quite as good as what I’m used to, but it’s good enough to get the job done, and it’s convenient! 🙂
@@xXEmbracetheMetalXx nice 👍
I have one of these and am very happy with it. Really impressive, heavy metal distortion. I also have the AC30 version, which I love too.
Nice!
I’m considering buying one of these. Sounds pretty nice from what I see...so far.
Definitely worth it man! 👍
I work overnights and I just bought this so I can bring this to work to jam when there are no customers messaging in. It is a great travel device and has crazy tone for its price and size.
Nice! I wish I could play at work :D:D
Another great video by my guy, Fin!! I really enjoy your reviews. How's that traveling case treating ya?
Thanks!
Bought one watched your review and it sounds good cheers😎
Nice! 👍
Im so happy these things exist been dreaming for some thing like thuis since i was a little guitar kid
hello! i have a very important question haha. Could I connect my acustic guitar with this? i wonder if i could simulate the same distortion, thanks
Yes, you can connect this to a elctro acoustic guitar and get some sort of a distorted sound out of it. But I'm guessing that it will not sound all that good :D
@@palmmute thanks!
Do you find that yours has a decent amount of white noise at idle when plugged in? I just picked one up and its pretty jarring.
Not really, there's a little hiss but it's much less noticeable than the idle feedback I get on my Katana 50 for an example.
For 50, it's really incredible.
I have this pocket amp and some random 90s amp my Dad gave me... the amp seems to work fine without the vox metal, and the vox metal works 100 % great with my PC speakers... however the amp and pocket amp together just cuts out all the time, crackles, etc... and I"ve tried many settings combos... any idea? I can't tell you the amp name brand cause the owner removed the logos :/ i'll just put it at 90s era, it has 3 musical inputs, foot pedal jack, volume, bass, treble, overdrive, etc
That's a tough one, don't really know what could be causing that :P
Hey nice video!! Just one question to record sound from this it’s just plugging the headphone output to an audio interface or are there any better ways ?
Thanks! That's the only way that I've come up with to record it 🤔
Nice review. What if I wanted to play some clean music? Like chilli peppers, can I turn the tone down to get a clean sound or would I have to buy a different amplug for that?
You can play cleans and slightly overdriven songs with this but it doesn't sound all that great. So if you're picky about tone i'd get the clean model for that since they're so cheap.
They actually make some variants of this thing. While this one is purely meant for metal, they have ones that are meant for clean tones.
Nice riffs!
Cheers!
Im new to guitar and have been learning lots of tool, im pretty inexperienced and was wondering if this or the AC30 would be better
It's pretty much up to personal preference, depends on what kind of a tone you prefer. This one has a lot more distortion and the AC30 is better for rock kind of stuff
@@palmmute thanks this helped alot actually
greät review. gonna get öne of these myself
Hello again!
Just wanted to let you know, I thought I remembered you mentioning that there is only one setting for each of the effects for this device.
I was watching another demo of the product, and the guy demo’ing was switching between three different settings for each effect.
Looked like he was hitting a button on top and pushing something in on the side of the amplug device, as well. Maybe even at the same time, I’m not sure.
You might try that and see if it works for you! 🙂
hello sir! i know im a bit late but may i ask how do you record with the amplug? im new to recording stuff
Hey! I recorded with the headphone output going into my PC using audacity.
@@palmmute heaphone output straight to the mic of your pc? it is that convenient??!
Sorry for the late reply, but yes! :D
What kind of batteries does it use? I’m thinking about ordering one.
It uses 2 AAA batteries :)
Can you get 80s hair metal sounds or should I get the classic one
You can get pretty close with this but I'd guess the classic will get you closer.
I have the classic and it does that really well.
What song is that first riff from...i swear i know it but i cant name it and its driving me crazy lol
It's stricken by disturbed :D
I use the aux into a tiny JBL bluetooth speaker and it sounds decent
Nice, done that before and it sounds pretty okay! 👍
I don’t normally comment on these videos but you spent way too much time talking and way too little time demoing the gadget. And all 3 sounds sounded the same because you didn’t play different riffs or change the gain up to show the nuances of each amp emulation.
Fair enough man, thanks for the feedback!
Think I'm going with this. I can rip without pissing off anybody🙃
I have the bass version , is fantastic and the aux in its a great plus
Yeah I love playing Thrash Metal but I have a big ass amp and it pisses off my mother so I'm just getting a amplug 2 Metal.
Lyrics to Stricken are:
“Yanamana
Yamanaaaamaaaaanaaaaaa!”
Yo I have the metal vox and the Kirk hammett pedal too, you can actually use the wah with the vox
Nice! Good taste in gear! :D
This might be stretching it since it is just a headphone amp but does it have a built in noise gate?
I definitely haven't noticed anything like a noise gate when playing through this but idk for sure 🤔
PalmMute I usually play on my axe fx with the gate pretty heavy. When you palm mute or stop playing it just instantly cuts and there’s no noise or feedback. I’m going to Kuwait for a year and won’t be able to bring an amp so I was hoping this would be good for that.
@@ethanwinter7196 Right. This will be a very different experience to play then for sure, probably worth a try though!
PalmMute as long as it isn’t too noisy then it should be worth trying. Thanks!
Would you recommend this to someone who wants to buy their first guitar?
On a really tight budget I guess it's an ok place to start off, but I would still try to go for some sort of a cheap amp because it unlocks a lot more different tones to play around with 👍
@@palmmute I have about $350. People say that squier strats are one of the best beginner guitars. Any amp recommendations? Or beginner guitars?
@@het2419 Squier strats are okay, that's what I started on, or Harley Bentons too. For amps fender has some good ones like the mustang for cheap or the boss katana 50 for around $200, which is what I still play to this day! 👍👍
@@palmmute Thanks man. I'll check them out
Does it take AA or AAA batteries cause the site I just ordered it from says AAA and you mentioned AA
AAA.
@@palmmute cool, thanks 🤟
Do i have to use headphones what about my Bluetooth speaker
If you connect it to a speaker via the 3.5mm headphone jack that will work too! I've played like that in a bit of a pinch before when I didn't have access to an amp :D
Certainly can
hi , beautiful video, i also have the vox amplug classic rock, i wanted to ask you, how do i register? I would like to hear the backing track, and I play on it. thank you very much and long life to rock
Thanks man! Just so that I understand correctly, you want the backing track for the demo?
@@palmmute Sorry for my english.. I would like to record my music on the demo backing track but record It with Vox amplug effect. At the Moment by my phone i can record only external sound (my Guitar) and not also amplified music on demo.
@@valeriano4779 Oh, okay I think I know what you're saying. I'll link the backing track below, and to record there's lots of ways you can go. The easiest is to just play the backing track from a speaker in the background and play over it on your guitar, but if you want you can look into getting a microphone or recording software to record.
here's the track: ua-cam.com/video/hrBC5258rPA/v-deo.html
What is the name of the song you played?
Stricken by Disturbed.
This offers great tones but the hardware sucks! I bought one of these just few months ago and it broke. It's made of a plastic case. Therefore you cannot depend on it for a long period of time.
Yeah, the build quality isn't all that great.
I have the bass version, excelent for me, i bought it a couple of years ago, still perfect
What settings in tones?
Gain and tone settings were at about 7-8 for all of them 👍
I bought this but my sound is nowhere near what you hear in this video. Mine is like an old analog distortion pedal with dirty, slushy, dusty sound, no low frequencies, just bad shrieking :(
That's odd, the recordings are not edited in this video, so that's exactly how mine sounds :P
@@palmmute no equalizers, no nothing? I frankly don't get what's wrong with my item. Is it a fake or what? :(
@@Surmoka No EQ, just recorded it through the headphone jack and threw it in the video 🤔
🤘🏽
😎🤘🎸
It works for BASS? Because the bass one doesent have any effects
I have no clue to be honest.
technically it should work but it will probably sound pretty weird.
@@palmmute i see, thanks for the information
can i plug it into strat?
Yes, it works with any electric guitar that has a standard sized cable jack :)
The better ones are the nux mighty plug 2 and the valeton rushead max.
I will check those out!
So, no clean option?
Technically no, but you can just turn the gain off and get some sort of a clean sound.
Hahaha I love the bass reference
can you play out loud with them?
It doesn't have a speaker built in but you can plug it into a separate speaker using the headphone output!
@@palmmute thanks man!
