  • And we have yet another Micro OLED headset! At only 83g, the Rokid Air is a truly sleek AR headset. The company says this could project a 120" screen into mid-air to watch videos and play games. But is that so? I am here to check that out.

I appreciated this guys video. It was well made. I would like to interject a couple of facts. Fact 1, it does produce 120 inch screen. He saw less then 24 inches because he was close to his monitor which shrinks the screen. The glasses are similar to a protector. The further away from the object your projecting onto the larger the screen you will see.
Fact 2 it does do ar. The app for the glasses has to be download. These glasses are truly awesome. My wife wanted me to turn off the TV so she could go to sleep for work the next day. No problem, I put the glasses on and hooked them up to my lg wing 5g. Put my ear buds in and enjoyed the UFC PPV on a 120 inch screen. After about 5 minutes I forgot I had the glasses on and I became emersed into what I was watching.

Just got mine yesterday. Haven't stopped discovering how many different ways this is going to come in handy. To those dissing it, don't knock it till you try it. Also, the price will go down eventually. It's the beginning of the creative process not the end all. Things will improve or all you Nay sayers can just crush it before it has a chance and go back outside and play with your rocks and sticks while you wait for a miracle. SMH

This reminds me of a device made by MicroVac back in the 90s. The device was a pair of sunglasses with a mirrored projector that could connect and show to any thing with RCA out or broadcast TV and projected a slightly transparent 90 inch screen on the eye. It had a battery time of about 2 hours and cost around $500 USD.

Sounds like it's basically an NReal Light without the sensors but with those diopter dials and louder speakers. But NReal can make *some* content (UA-cam...) stay in place, meaning you set your video screen on the wall and it stays there as your head moves and you walk around. Which feels much more natural than being locked to every tiny head movement.

Seb 1) Does this work on PC with alt display port (Type-c)? Obviously this isn’t the same technically as Type-C to HDMI adaptors as the other is for Display port access.
    2) The other question is do they sell their own adapters for HDMI or Display ? Mobile is very limiting.
    3) The 120” screen is there any option or accelerometer to pan around or it only stationary fixed in front of your face?
    Thanks for sharing!

I'm not interested in the Rokid Air, but I'm definitely interested in the Rokid Air 2. That technology is amazing, I'd love to have Video Glasses like that! But it needs to either be much cheaper ($200ish) or have a better FOV. That size and technology is definitely the future, though!

Nice tech and Seb the formfactor is great, don't put the size too much down to the lack if cameras, that really wouldn't increase the size much, maybe if you add eye tracking, cooling and the like it could get slightly bigger but for proof of that size is legitimately small you only have to look at the Shiftall MeganeX. The 120" screen is dodgy though! I'm 175cm away from my 60" Sony TV and judging by you hands I would say that size is more applicable.

For cinemas, THX suggest that the best (horizontal) viewing angle from seat-to-screen is 40 degrees. If Rokid could get to 4K per eye with the virtual screen having a 40 degree horizontal viewing angle even at a significantly higher price I think they'd have a niche product for competing for a segment of the high end television market.

    • @PeterKoperdan

    • @entreprenerd1963
      @entreprenerd1963 Рік тому

IMAX is a bit of a bundle - the wider screen, the higher resolution filming, and the director choosing shots that don't have audience members swiveling their heads from side-to-side. With those three elements coming together it's more impactful.

I can tell you that you're not missing much. The App is pretty crappy. You're way better off using the phone's Web browser and it's own streaming apps and mirror the display to glasses, than use Rokid's movie apps, which is slower, less responsive, and ui doesn't interact well with the pointer.
As for their 3Dish games... it uses orientation tracking, but the tracking on these glasses are very bad. You get a lot of jerking/stuttering/juddering. Not at all smooth, so if you do have games where you can look around a 3D environment, it's so jerky that it was simply unplayable. If you're getting something for 3D games, you're better off spending the money to get an Oculus Quest.
These are primarily great for mirroring a display on a small device, or to replicate a desktop environment, like using Samsung Dex, or just chill and watch a movie while you're laying down or reclined. Then it's a question of whether it's worth $500 for you to do just that.

Just plug it into Steam Deck, it will shut off it's screen and mirror it to the glasses, and so the battery life should be the same... I've "backed" it now and hope they will deliver it soon! xD

These where one if the options I considered. The main thing I need to know. Is is really a 120 inch tv. Or is it ai "120 once tv views at 20 feet away? This has been one of the biggest issues in shopping for a hmd. I just want a big screen a right in front of my face. Not a tiny screen that seems like it's 20 feet away.

So I just got the nReal Air and I noticed an issue with your size explaination.
It seems that glasses like these have an optical illusion.
When sitting at my desk with 27" monitor and a wall about 2 feet in front of me, the virtual screen seems about the same size as my 27 monitor.
but if I turn around and look at my far wall, the exact same image seems about 100-150 inches!
This can easily be solved with some math, and how we perceive depth.
Because the images you are seeing is a fixed size filling a specific amount of your FOV. If you bring your face close to a surface like 1ft away then the screen will seem like you are holding a Nintendo switch in front of your face.
The best way to describe it is if you make a square with your hands where you see the edge of the screen and the. Turn to a direction where objects are 10 feet away leaving your hands in the same position. Then your hands will be covering a larger area because our vision is a cone.

    • @mixedrealityTV

@@mixedrealityTV Did you try what I said? It is strange if you don't see the phenomenon.
Of course it is possible that the Rokid Air is just smaller than the nReal Air. I've been hearing that from quite a few people who have both.
You don't actually have a review on the nReal Air's do you? You should get a review pair.
Also there's a new one that just opened preorders called the Viture One which looks very promising. One channel already has a preview of them I'm sure if you reached out they'd let you do a unbiased preview MRTV style.:).

The blacks can look crushed and there's still not enough pixels to make it next gen view reality, but... I have a Quest2 and Valve Index (with better optics) but I'll still watch films on the Quest2 as I can sit back in my recliner, head fully rested against the back (due to the fabric head band) enjoying a giant screen rendition of Lord of the Rings :) But if you're a cinephile I'd probably go with home cinema setup - my neice and boyfriend have one and it's beautiful - closest thing to a cinema experience without someones mum checking her mobile phone every 5 freaking minutes!

Read my comment in one of the replies below for more details... But the main point, is that a screen that small, is not going to allow for much perceptible 3d Depth. The effect will only be slightly better than a Nintendo 3DS. Its not going to be like an IMax3D level experience. Not even close to it.
You would likely have a better stereoscopic 3D effect from standard VR glasses.. because they are magnified, to create a much larger FOV.

The screen can be fixed. When using their app, you get an option to do that. Unfortunately, the orientation tracking is horrible, and you get a lot of stuttering/jerky movements. Much better to just have it follow your head, which works just fine to lay down or recline to enjoy a movie.

@@abrockkalypse oh yeh, super light and pretty comfortable. I wear glasses myself and these don't feel much more heavier on my face. Most I've used it was about 2 hours straight, so far, but have not felt any discomfort. I think my eyes got a little tired from staring too long so had to take a break anyway. They are bright displays pretty close to ur eyes, so eye strain might occur from using too long, or having it too bright in a darker environment. But it's also easy to change brightness levels by pressing a button on the top right glass temple.
Also keep in mind this uses power from ur phone and you can't charge ur phone at the same time, so you're limited to your phone power for time of use anyway.
Overall they are a great portable display option. Just not sure they are worth 500 when the AR part isn't a great experience imo. But you do you.

Question is, can it do 3D video? It seems an ideal case for that. If this could do proper stereoscopic 3D movies, that might be pretty nice. Either way, these are bound to be more immersive than watching a movie on your phone (by a lot) and I like the concept. Spending some hours on a plane or ship and being able to comfortably watch a movie or some TV-shows is a nice use case. Or maybe when working out - I have an elliptical and watching video on a tablet while using it is possible but not that great. This might work out great. I'm really tempted to get one.

Yeah... I was really getting sucked into this AR stuff - I wanna pc/PS/Xbox/android game on a MASSIVE screen... But, well, total let down. I want a Quest 2 cinema screen size in a pair of glasses. Doesn't have to be 3D or VR or anything like that, just a massive screen. Doesn't even have to have any bells and whistles - just a massive screen you can plug USC-C or has an adapter so HDMI into and ALL devices work and all it shows is the screen. So it's just a monitor with a massive screen. No connection? No picture. Simples.
And all the apps and stuff? I've owned a Quest 2 for 2 years now and at best they are equal to a quest - but usually laughable. And that's 2 year old tech now so...
Guess this isn't being marketed at me at the moment - but anyone who is buying one of these? Unless you want a piddly screen for journeys (and if you do, good on ya!) I'd recommend a vr headset... Ah man, I'm so disappointed.
But thanks for the honest review dude, awesome! You saved me money!

Excellent 3D effects, are only notably good, when using a very large screen size. The reason, is that the depth of how far an image can Pop out of the screen... is less that half of the size of the screen. So, on a 15" screen... you could make a small ball come out less than 7". However... since things close up in a camera are much larger in size... such as a huge asteroid... that 7" is more like 3"... due to how they balance the 3d depth effects.
I used to own both a pair of 3d glasses for my PC, that played a few 3d versions of some older dos games. Ive also owned the Sega Master System 3d Glasses. Both were cool... but they couldnt even come close to comparing to the 3d depth effect from an Imax 3D film experience.
Since the Imax screen is like 60ft... and the seating is more vertical and is CLOSER to the screen than a typical movie theater... the 3d images come out of the screen, about like 7ft away from your body.
A former friend of mine, bought a 3d projector. It was only 720p. However, he projected the image on to a screen that was like 14 foot wide. At about 14ft away from the screen... the images were like 5ft away from you. As if you could reach out and grab them. It was virtually the same 3d depth experience, as an actual Imax3d projection. (smaller screen, but same proportional distances: screen size to distance away from screen)
This Devices screen, is like a 20" pc monitor, floating about 3ft away from you... from the way Sebastian is showing things + the way it looks through the glasses. Its not even close to 120 inches... let alone, the depth and field of view, from a 14 foot wide screen. Its WAY overpriced, and completely Lame.
