So I have to tell you! I have watched many videos on adding a zipper next to cording and yours was by far the easiest to understand and navigate! Thank you so much!
I am so glad I found this! I was asked to make a pillow as a gift for the national president of an organization I belong to from our unit. (No pressure, right? Lol.). I decided on a cathedral window with an embroidered emblem on the front and an embroidered back. Then decided on cording too. As I applied the cording, it dawned on me, “ I’ve never installed a zipper with cording!” Thanks to this wonderfully explained tutorial, all went well on the first try! It turned out so beautiful! My local unit was stunned when I unveiled the finished product. It will be presented to the president of our organization on the 10th of may. Thank you so much for guiding me through the proper technique of a perfectly installed zipper!
This is hands down the best video tutorial I've seen for putting in a zipper on a corded pillow! (and I've watched a bunch in the past few days) I made new covers for 3 large pillows that are the back cushions on my son's favorite (well-loved and dirty) sofa. I found your video after making one pillow cover using a different technique. The two I made using your instructions came out so nice that I'm going to take the other one apart and redo it! Thanks for teaching me a new skill!
Oh my I’ve watched this a bazillion times I’ve been trying to sew a zipper and thick cords to two sticks of butter 😂 aka velvet with a 1/4 inch seem , Lady you are a saint for posting this many blessings your way for coming to my rescue!!! 😅😅😅😅
Jan your video was very well done. I used to do a lot of zippers like this, but that was almost 25 years ago when I had my professional draperies soft- furnishings business. This is the way I did it but couldn’t actually remember all the steps, your video was as close as I did it before and was very straight-forward. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for your cording and your zippered pillow tutorials. I've been struggling with these sewing functions for years. I now know how to do it in a reasonably easy way!
Your tutorial is easy to understand. Thank you for your talent and expertises. I now have the confidence along with your video to make this kind of zippered pillow cover.
Thanks so much for this! I used your directions to make three pillows, one with fringe and two with self-made piping. I used down alternative inserts. Each one cost about $25 in materials but they feel and look like more expensive pillows. I used 20" squares of fabric to begin with which fit my 20" inserts beautifully. For future reference, this was what I did the first few days during the Corona virus pandemic isolation.
Thanks for this tutorial! I learned to do this around 2003 with a tutorial on a VHS tape that I think came from The Pillow Lady! That tape went missing and now 16 years later I want to make pillows but all I have are my notes from that tape. I am so happy I stumbled on your video that does such a nice job of explaining this technique.
Thank you SO much. This is the best tutorial I've seen. I've been able to make 2 pillows using your tutorial having never done this before, and they were both perfect. Thank you.
Wow.. Amazing tutorial.. So many ways and yet each one is so unique and innovative to sew a pillow with piping. Loved your channel name especially the last tagline ( Beauty over 60). So cool
Definitely the best video I have seen on putting a zipper in with piping. I'm still trying to get the hang of the "flap" Seems I'm having trouble pinning it correctly. I am sure I will get it eventually but, wanted to let you know this has helped me tremendously! Thank you so much!
You are a GREAT TEACHER THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE beautiful finish it worked for me right after I watched you .Your instructions are clear . I THANK YOU
This is part of the set I made with your instructions the arrow is one of 4 corded zipper pillow covers and a doggie pillow the rest of the fabric was used to make smaller pillows Thanks again
Thank you very much from Greece, for the thorough explanation . I already made one and it went great. I saw several videos and yours was the very best! God bless you!
Thank you, Jann, for all of your very clear videos. These are helping me a lot. I have a question. Does an invisible zipper need a placket? I noticed in one pillow zipper video you put a placket in with a regular zipper and in the invisible zipper video you didn’t use a placket. Does an invisible zipper on a pillow look better without a placket? Or just not need one? Just FYI: I never sewed before. Now I make silk pillows with my own cording, masks, and now drapes, all because of your very clear videos. I have a new hobby thanks to you.
Hello Jann. I have already left a comment, but have been watching so many of your videos this last week and feel so inspired! You really are a such great teacher and your voice is calming! I really do not need to go nowhere now on You Tube as you have everything covered! I really do love this tutorial and am about to start making the cushion, and wanted to know the exact width size of the zip that you used please (I know the zip measures 11" in length)? Loved the Ottoman tutorial too! I really am spoilt for choice. Thank you so much for your videos, you are such a professional!
Thank you for your kind words. I probably used a professional zipper roll for this zipper, but any zipper you find at JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby work too. Thanks for watching!
Putting a zipper into a corded cushion is not an easy task. You broke it down into component parts so that I was able to follow. To reinforce my learning I make drawings and annotated them. We are in lockdown as people around the world are. My aim is to make beautiful cushions as you see in the posh magazines for my garden and that will bring a smile to my face when I have completed each one.
Love this video!! Can't wait to use your method on three pillows I have to make for a friend! I was going to use another route I'm going to nix that and sew it your way... I do have one question tho, do I need to cut the back side a little bigger than the front side to allow for the flap? Thank you so so much!
This is such a great video which I have just come across ... Your fabric measures 14.5" and your zip measures 11". Can you get pillow forms that measure the same as your fabric (14.5"). What size pillow form do you use? Your work is just excellent!! Thank you so much for this most informative video Jann.
No, I don't add in extra fabric for the placket. The front and back sides are cut the same size. Which is the same size as my pillow form. Thanks for watching!
Hi Jann what model Brother sewing machine is it your using? Do you recommend it, I’m looking for a good machine that will handle any fabric light or heavy with ease. Regards Steve
This was filmed a few years ago in my drapery workroom. It is an industrial sewing machine, and it was a workhorse. Bought it used. I don't have it anymore, don't have room for it in our new home.
Wonderful, useful video. I'd have had difficulty just figuring this out on my own so thank you very much. Also -- can you recall the manufacturer of that beautiful fabric?
Hi Jann, Thank you for the informative video. Everything looks great, but when I turn the pillow right side out, the corners at each end of the zipper PUCKER. Can you tell me what I may be doing wrong? Thank you.
thank you Jann. What tolerance do you allow for the placard? The back side of the pillow would need to be slightly larger than the front to allow for that finger hem to the cording. correct? It looks like the back would need to be about a 1/2" longer. Great video.
Both sides of the pillow are cut the same size as your pillow insert. For instance, if your pillow form is a 16" x 16' insert, then you would cut both the front and back sides of the fabric at 16" x 16". This makes for a nice fit, not too baggy. Thanks for watching!
Hello and thank you for this great tutorial. My pillow is 24 inches in length and the packaged zippers come in even numbers only (e.g. 20, 22, 24). If my zipper should be 3 inches shorter than the fabric size I would need a 21-inch zipper, which I am not able to find. Can I use a shorter or longer one? Thank youl.
If you were sewing an 18 x 18 pillow, should I cut 19 x 19 squares, or should it be something else? Just want to make sure I do it right. thank you for sharing this video. It will be my first time making a corded pillow that has a zipper.
Thank you for your tutorials. Question, is it better to zigzag or serge? I’d like to invest in a serger but am wondering...is there a such thing as a good brand/line of sergers or is it strictly preference? Thank you
Looks easy when you do it! I'm sure I will need a seam ripper the first couple go rounds. Thanks for the excellent lesson. You look great, have not seen you for a while, you look younger and thinner :) Hope you don't mind me saying so...jealous
oh no I'm sorry. yes unfortunately 6 yrs does make a difference. Thought you were on some fabulous health plan and was going to share with us. Some of the recipes you posted on FB looked good! You always look fabulous!
I like this video a lot, except I am confused on the length the zipper is supposed to be. ;you say it should be 3" shorter than the fabric, and your fabric is cut 14-1/2" and your zipper is at 11". That is 3.5". , not 3 inches. Half an inch is not very much, but in a project, it can make a BIG difference. So, if my fabric is cut at 12", should my zipper be at 9.0" or 9.5"? Do you mean to say that the zipper should be cut at 3" shorter than the finished size of the fabric? I am trying your method on a gift project for a good friend, and I don't want to flub it up. Also you refer to the zipper that you have"already prepared"---this video does not contain any of that prep. Easy enough for me to "wing it" on that--but I'd like more clear info on the zipper length. I have a drawer full of very long zippers which I cut down for various projects.
So sorry! I should have said that my fabric is cut at 14". I like to cut my fabric the same size as my pillow form for a snugger pillow cover. So, for a 14"x14" pillow form, I cut my fabric at 14"x14". Thanks for watching!
I would love to have an industrial machine with a table. I've got a domestic Janome. I suppose it could be my fault, but I swear I've followed the rules - it's just so noisy and it doesn't seem to want to co-operate. It's a newish machine, haven't done that much at all on it - so it can't be fatigue. I really wish I'd have saved-up for a Bernina or something. Your machine hardly makes a sound. I contemplated buying a second-hand one, but I would have no idea who to trust, or even what to look for. I'm just venting!
Reese, good luck with your search. I bought mine almost 20 years ago, so I'm not much help with how to find a good one. Just do a little research, and see what you come up with. Thanks for watching!
@@annazawistowska2429 Yes, it's easier to make an envelope pillow, but I think a zipper in the bottom of a pillow does look better than an envelope pillow. Just a matter of personal preference. I try to make pillows of all types for different types of viewers.
Inserting a zipper into a pillow can seem daunting at first, especially if you're making a pillow with cording or piping around the edges. But, I promise, it's really not hard to do! My tutorial will walk you through each step, and in no time you'll be making your own custom-looking pillows!

Lovely fabric. Tasteful. Will try this method soon, as I've only had a go at the envelope cushions up to now.
Thanks Reese!
Love this video!! Can't wait to use your method on three pillows I have to make for a friend!
I was going to use another route I'm going to nix that and sew it your way...
I do have one question tho, do I need to cut the back side a little bigger than the front side to allow for the flap?
Thank you so so much!
Nope, the front and back are the same size.
This is such a great video which I have just come across ... Your fabric measures 14.5" and your zip measures 11". Can you get pillow forms that measure the same as your fabric (14.5"). What size pillow form do you use? Your work is just excellent!! Thank you so much for this most informative video Jann.
14" pillow form. I always cut my fabric so that the pillow cover is a little snug.
Thank you very much for the great madrer class. 🎉
Thanks for watching!
I really can't thank you enough for this!!
You're very welcome!
Great tutorial!
Thank you!
And another question: did you have to make the back a different size than the front to allow for that folded placket?
The back is the same size as the front.
Thank you! I had the same question :)
Thanks! I was searching to see if this had been answered :)
You are so patient I love the video thank you

Love that fabric!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for such a thorough tutorial. I think I can do it. Love that fabric. Do you know where you purchased it?
Thanks for watching! I believe the fabric came from Greenhouse fabrics. I had an account with them when I had my drapery business.
Nicely done! I think I can do this!
You can do it!
Hi great video. Just wondering whether you add a little extra material to allow for the placket ?
No, I don't add in extra fabric for the placket. The front and back sides are cut the same size. Which is the same size as my pillow form. Thanks for watching!
Hi Jann what model Brother sewing machine is it your using?
Do you recommend it, I’m looking for a good machine that will handle any fabric light or heavy with ease.

This was filmed a few years ago in my drapery workroom. It is an industrial sewing machine, and it was a workhorse. Bought it used. I don't have it anymore, don't have room for it in our new home.
Very helpful, thank you!
I'm glad this tutorial was helpful to you! Thanks for watching!
Wonderful, useful video. I'd have had difficulty just figuring this out on my own so thank you very much. Also -- can you recall the manufacturer of that beautiful fabric?
Thanks for watching! I bought that fabric years ago from Greenhouse fabrics. It has been discontinued.
Did you make back side a little larger to accommodate the placket?
Both sides are the same size.
Thank you!!
Nice Video! I have a question- Do I need to add a half inch to back side to make up for the placket?
No need. Make as shown in the video.
Thank you for the tutorial. I love the fabric. Where did you buy it?
You're welcome. The fabric is a decorator fabric that is discontinued. Thanks for watching!
Thanks , this is very helpful x
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Jann, Thank you for the informative video. Everything looks great, but when I turn the pillow right side out, the corners at each end of the zipper PUCKER. Can you tell me what I may be doing wrong? Thank you.
Hmmm... without seeing it in person, it's very hard to tell what may have happened.
thank you Jann.
Thanks for watching!
my tomorrow lesson.i hope i am going to pull it .Thank you very much.
You can do it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks I will try this.
Thanks for watching!
Can you share the full tutorial or this pillow from start to finish pls
I will put that kind of video on my list to do. Great idea!
Thanks for a very helpful tutorial. Can you tell me how wide you made that seam allowance?
The seam allowance is 1/2"
Can you share what is on the ends of the zipper? Is it just a scrap piece of fabric sewn on? Thank you.
Yes, just scraps of fabric.
Beautiful...I will try
Thanks for watching!
Hello and thank you for this great tutorial. My pillow is 24 inches in length and the packaged zippers come in even numbers only (e.g. 20, 22, 24). If my zipper should be 3 inches shorter than the fabric size I would need a 21-inch zipper, which I am not able to find. Can I use a shorter or longer one? Thank youl.
Use a 22" zipper, or cut down a 24".
If you were sewing an 18 x 18 pillow, should I cut 19 x 19 squares, or should it be something else? Just want to make sure I do it right. thank you for sharing this video. It will be my first time making a corded pillow that has a zipper.
No, follow the directions in the video. I like my pillow covers snug, not loose and baggy. Thanks for watching!
I've just created a video dedicated to the seam allowance questions I get. Hope it's helpful! ua-cam.com/video/e5Rwsa9H-Xw/v-deo.html
Do front and pack pieces measure the same at the beginning? Thank you
Yes they do.
Thank you that was a great help. But anyone reading.. you must leave zip open before sewing all around to finish or you can't turn right side out.
Thanks for watching!
good job!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your tutorials. Question, is it better to zigzag or serge? I’d like to invest in a serger but am wondering...is there a such thing as a good brand/line of sergers or is it strictly preference?
Thank you
Either works fine. If you'renot going to do a lot of serging, I would not invest in a serger. Mine is an industrial model.
The Brother 1034D is a good entry-level/budget serger. A zigzag will do you just fine though.
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
What is the name of the material you used for this pillowcase?
Pretty sure this fabric is discontinued. I bought more than ten years ago from Greenhouse Fabrics.
Pillow 💝
Thanks for watching!
How can I prevent sewing THROUGH the cording?
May take some practice, and using a zipper or cording foot helps.
Nice God bless you I'm nasir country Pakistan

Mam, How to make a cover with zipper for U shaped travel pillow? Please explain with another video
Sorry, I don't have any plans to make that kind of pillow. Thanks for watching.

Looks easy when you do it! I'm sure I will need a seam ripper the first couple go rounds. Thanks for the excellent lesson. You look great, have not seen you for a while, you look younger and thinner :) Hope you don't mind me saying so...jealous
LOL! Kathleen, I actually filmed this video 6 years ago. So, yes, I do look younger and thinner! Ha! Thanks for watching!
oh no I'm sorry. yes unfortunately 6 yrs does make a difference. Thought you were on some fabulous health plan and was going to share with us. Some of the recipes you posted on FB looked good! You always look fabulous!
please say where you get your fabric because I have so disappointed with Joannes. junk
Beth, this is a fabric that I bought 6 or 7 years ago, and is probably discontinued.
I'm guessing surging is overlocking
Yes, serging is same as overlocking.
Question: is pillow with zipper more elegant than without zipper? ;-) I mean... why we put zippers to pillows? 🤭🥰🥰🙈
To be able to change out pillow covers, or to wash them if made from pre-washed fabric. Thanks for watching!
@@JannNewtonSewOften of course, but envelope pillows I wash too ,can I make all my pillows envelope style ? It's easier :-(
@@annazawistowska2429 Yes, it's easier to make an envelope pillow, but I think a zipper in the bottom of a pillow does look better than an envelope pillow. Just a matter of personal preference. I try to make pillows of all types for different types of viewers.
