I've watched this video maybe 50-60 times now. I keep coming back to it when I want to just chill and get lost in it. It is that good. Everyone on this recording, those who arranged, sang, played, produced, mixed, and filmed it are absolutely superb. The Mamas and Papas would surely smile on this. It is a gem, a gift for the ages.

40 years in business. The lead vocalist with amazing voice color. I can hear her by hours. She is singing so effortlessly that my soul gets better immediately. Wish her all the best.
It's almost hard to believe that these are teenage students. They sound more polished and professional than many professionals. The vocals are thrilling, the keyboards and guitars brilliant, and the drummer drives the song with impeccable timing and skill. And the "traveling" bassist is such a joy to watch. Besides laying down perfect rhythm in total synch with the drummer, she clearly is having the time of her life. Whether these kids choose music as a career or just a hobby, they have the goods to go far. Cheers!
great insightful comment. A shame the instrumental bridge was not as in the original, a real wind instrument. There is hope for the youth of this world in the arts. P.S. I call Kamryn, the bassist, a " boogie bass player ".
I am sure the recording people and director were not students. But also for a professional recording this one is at very high level in all kind of manors.
I love California. I was ten in '65. Been here my whole life. But it was better then. I was from NoCal, but live in SoCal too. The pics of the beach and the city skyline made me sad for days gone by. The Bay Area was beautiful.
Great to hear from a pro that worked the mixing board. Can you imagine what they had to work with during Phil Spectors' time there. All the transients and electro-magnetic interference ? ! Not to mention dust and fiber in the switchgear. And post processing ! Is that how the record label got its' name ?( EMI) I first heard this on Denon noise cancelling head set and my jaw dropped. The opening guitar(s) blew my mind & was hooked after that. Listened countless time for flaws. Could not find ANY !
I am no pro but a lifelong player and this is absolutely first class on every level not least that we have youth playing instruments at a high level and making a version of a classic that more than measures up to the original. Great to see young musicians as opposed to just boy and girl vocal/ dance bands.
I'm not sure why so many people are commenting that Lauren is no Mama Cass. That is a totally irrelevant fact as the lead vocalist in the original Mamas and Papas version of the song was John Phillips. Check the video if you don't believe me. Mama Cass Elliot only sang background. Lauren's smoky voice covers this song perfectly. John Phillips also was no Mama Cass.
@Shelley Frihauf I don't know why people want to be so cruel. Here too in Canada things are sliding down the rudeness path more than I have ever witnessed in my 71 years. The velvet voice emenating from Laurens mouth brightens my day.
I gotta say, Ive listened to this version several times quite loud and Laurens voice is incredible and this interpretation of this classic would do the Mamas and the Papas proud!
Best ever cover of this classic. Still listening and just as awesome. Lauren voice is perfect, drummer, bassist, keyboard player and guitarist all nailed it. The backing singers are just brilliant. Phenomenal!
They missed the high note on the guitar intro, the original doesnt have drums, and the vocals volume is all over the place. but yea say what ya want. oh yea and you hear the tambourine poke its nose out randomly every once in a while.
You mean the version from Barry McGuire? Or the version from The Mama's & The Papa's. Because Barry's was the first recorded version of the song... (written by the papa's tho). Personally i like The Mama's & The Papa's version the most, after that the version from Barry McGuire. After those two i prefer the version from Melanie and the version from Scala & Kolacny Brothers. All are better than this one...
The SCHOOL is amazing! I knew Rock would be nornalized and taught in schools, and it is a GOOD THING. Jazz and even Bach were once considered "mind-corrupting hippie stuff" by the former generations! Time to keep going forward!

(Lettice Rowbotham) of yours and another one on top of that (Malread Nesbit) made me like a type of music that I appreciated slightly but did not necessarily like a lot. Lettice's and Celtic Woman's music really opened my eyes to what beautiful women could do with music and how they could twist my mind and make me like their music. Talk about beauties. Lettice and Malread are incredibly beautiful women, quite spellbinding in fact. They are not just quite spellbinding, they are extremely enchanting, very bewitching ladies. At 56 The original version of this song is on my top playlist. Awesome cover by his group-real talent. I know everyone’s a critic but my only comment would be there was something off with the synth part. Far from the original flute- but maybe that’s what they were going for.

OUTSTANDING JOB young people !!! Never heard a better cover to this SUPER CLASSIC, ALL time MASTERPIECE by the Mamas and Papas. May the Lord BLESS every one of you
This song was released in 1965. It's so gratifying to see such young singers and players passionately connect with music that their grandparents grew up listening to.
Yeah, it came on the radio about the same time as "Along Comes Mary" by the Association and, if I remember right, "Summer in the City" by the Lovin' Spoonful.
I’m 66 so I’m old enough to have heard this song as it was originally performed. I’m totally impressed with this tribute. I always look forward to videos from The School of Rock. You always feature such amazing talents and this video is no exception.
Agree - Although I thought the studio mix could have brought out more in her voice, I would have liked to see her bring it just a tad more at the beginning...but after that, she was quite strong. I think she'll be (if not already) on peoples radar, her talent and work is evident.
I have listened to this 100 times over the last year. Look... it's very rare for an artist to make a cover that beats the original. I'm old, stubborn and cling to the past. But wow! You all did such a perfect job.
The lead singer's unique voice is part of why this has gone viral. It is a great cover that is not just another attempted clone of the original! Every one of these kids nailed their parts!
It's not just that. It's the passion of performance. These guys are in a zone, and they know it, and ride that wave, and absolutely nail this song. And they know they're nailing it, as they do it. I would have liked to have seen the 30 seconds after the song ended, to see the reaction of the band members. Looking at each other, enjoying the feeling of having just turned in a performance for the ages.
this is one of my all-time favorite songs and generally, I don't care for covers of songs I love, but these kids really did this song the justice it deserves. The harmony of the backup singers is where the true magic comes from. Mama Cass would be proud of you.
@@timhallas4275 once you extract your head from your rectum, and maybe once you get some fresh air, you will realize that they chose her to replace the male voice in the original NOT with a soprano female voice, but with a deeper, smokier female voice in the high tenor range.

Voice of an Angel!! Much Respect for the way they put their own spin on these songs, but still keep so close to the way they were originally recorded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love watching this video. The singers are excellent. The girl bass player is strumming to her own beat, which all of us dedicated musicians possess. The kid drummer is blowing the roof off of the place. A fine piece of music. !!!!
I keep listening to this cut. I wish this lineup was featured on other songs. They could release an EP for sure. The bass and lead initially grab your attention for good reason. However, the harmony of the background singers is classic. The keys and drums kept everything tight. Rhythm guitar is great. And the studio quality allows the nuances of the lead's voice to shine. I would buy music from this lineup.
"....I would buy music from this lineup...." - yes I would too. These kids have solid, if not bright futures in music. If I were their parent, I'd be proud as hell of any of them, as it takes alot to put yourself out there.
The bass player leapt out to me for good reason, too. But it wasn't as much as the way she looks, but the fact that she is totally lost in her own zone, completely one with the music. For a short time, for her, nothing else in the universe existed. But hey, I'm a guy. She's damn cute, too.
As good as the vocals are on this cover, and they are fantastic, is the work of the players. The instrumentalists on this recording are absolutely superb...the guitars... the synth....drums...and that bass....the groove they're in is deep and rock solid. If I didn't know better, I would have no trouble believing these were highly talented studio musicians hired for their expertise in creating the perfect '60s vibe. It really is a beautiful piece of musical artistry.
Great job on this song, everyone! Kamryn - the bass player - just graduated from the School of Rock where I teach! So cool to see one of our kids in one of these videos!
She is fantastic on this song and in this video! So glad to see someone putting themselves into their work (and enjoying it!) instead of just "phoning it in"!
@@albertbrighten5691, everyone uses Autotune in the studio. It's a given. I play 7 instruments and have been in bands that recorded demos. When the studio mixes them, they use Autotune to get the best sound they can. Believe it or not, it's not really that much of a change to the tone of the vocalist. If they are little flat or sharp, it will bring them back to pitch. These kids don't have much of a pitch problem, so it makes them sound that much better.
I have listened to the School of Rock rendition of this classic, and it holds its own. The harmony is fabulous but the lead singer (Lauren) knocks it out of the park. Her voice is dynamic and captivating. I hope she has a great musical career. Such a distinct sound.

Whole lotta love (no pun intended) because without their smmooth harmony it doesn't work. KDM
They were awesome, nailed the harmony of the original. The lead singer not so much.
absolutely
@@Gamble661 I really enjoyed the lead singer's voice on this take. Added a more melancholy grove to the song. Seemed right-on for me.

All kids and their parents-you truly have blessings in this. GREAT JOB!

It's flawless!
40 years in business. The lead vocalist with amazing voice color. I can hear her by hours. She is singing so effortlessly that my soul gets better immediately. Wish her all the best.
I would like to add that her voice reminds me Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. More rocky but suits well to her delicate beauty.
Amazing voice very unique
@@wimnijland7602Sounds like Amy Winehouse
It's almost hard to believe that these are teenage students. They sound more polished and professional than many professionals. The vocals are thrilling, the keyboards and guitars brilliant, and the drummer drives the song with impeccable timing and skill. And the "traveling" bassist is such a joy to watch. Besides laying down perfect rhythm in total synch with the drummer, she clearly is having the time of her life. Whether these kids choose music as a career or just a hobby, they have the goods to go far. Cheers!
Remember, these are musicians. The rest are artists.
great insightful comment. A shame the instrumental bridge was not as in the original, a real wind instrument. There is hope for the youth of this world in the arts. P.S. I call Kamryn, the bassist, a " boogie bass player ".
I agree they nailed the song to perfection.
@@koentakinte2913what does that even mean?
I am sure the recording people and director were not students. But also for a professional recording this one is at very high level in all kind of manors.
I was 12 years old in 1965 in Oxnard, California it was paradise, no gangs no air pollution, just paradise.
I love California. I was ten in '65. Been here my whole life. But it was better then. I was from NoCal, but live in SoCal too. The pics of the beach and the city skyline made me sad for days gone by. The Bay Area was beautiful.
It was crazy smoggy in the 60s and 70s, which was the whole reason all the pollution controls began to be added to cars.
These talented young people are singing a song their great grandparents listened to.

Speaking as a mixer for over 30 years, one of the best covers/arrangements I have ever heard. Good luck to you all.
I was thinking the same thing, but without your expertise to back me up...so all I can say is that it just sounds like perfection all the way around.
I agree 100%
Truth!! She has an amazing voice! Everyone did an awesome job!! 👍🎶👍💓🎶👍
Because some people feel it is necessary to crap all over anything and everything. It is sad really.
John Phillips was no Mamma Cass! lol
awesome dig! you made my day!
Bravo❗️
I gotta say, Ive listened to this version several times quite loud and Laurens voice is incredible and this interpretation of this classic would do the Mamas and the Papas proud!
I disagree. See my comment if you like.
I agree, I like when someone can change the song they're covering, add their own flavour, and still make it sound good thusly honoring the original
@@Evsta They are kids. They did an excellent job. Must be miserable to be a genuine jack ass.
Probably the best version of this song since the original. These kids nailed it and are so enjoyable to watch. Sharing this with friends.
Exactly, perfect comment… lead vocalist is dynamite. Only thing they were missing was Cass and Michelle singing background.
These kids are great!
That band is amazing. They need to get back together. The lead singer has an amazing voice.
The SCHOOL is amazing! I knew Rock would be nornalized and taught in schools, and it is a GOOD THING. Jazz and even Bach were once considered "mind-corrupting hippie stuff" by the former generations! Time to keep going forward!

Its fun to watch a drummer and bass player who are so totally in command of the groove... This cover is simply fantastic. I grew up with this iconic song. They do total justice to the original, and yet this arrangement creates its own memory of it. Thank you to everyone associated with this recording. You should be proud.

I shared this on Facebook.. you should to.
Fantastic rendition of unquestionably one of the greatest rock songs of all time, IMO!

@@albertbrighten5691 no🎵
@@albertbrighten5691, everyone uses Autotune in the studio.
