Thank you so much for that. I like the old-style one-row box the best, more beat to the music.

These are best played by a roaring fire in a rustic Irish pub.

Hi! Yes, for Irish music these days, "D" is a better choice for a one row. Beyond the one row are two rows mostly played in keys of B/C, C#/D and some other combinations. I'm a C#/D player as well. You're right, these boxes are also used in Cajun music, but Cajuns usually have the reeds tuned a little differently. Now these are just my opinions, others will certainly differ with me. :)

All accordions are 'organs' the accordion was invented/designed to be a 'portable organ' years and years ago.. Read the history of the accordion. Lots on line.. You will find it VERY interesting..

It's similar. The tunings are different from a Cajun accordion, but the design is essentially the same. Cajuns, Irish, and Quebecois use them, as well as some Latin American genres.

@ilikemyexoticpets Hi: It's key of "D." I just recently had new reeds put in and had it tuned to a drier sound. I haven't had a chance to record it however. Thanks!

Hello, and many many compliments! I recently found an ancient Gloria one raw melodion (end 19th century I think). It needs a robust restoration. Can you give me a help/further information/suggestions? Thank you very much!!!

@iantheo1 Hi: I learned the tune by ear. Unfortunately I have not seen this one written down. I'm sure it is written somewhere, but I just don't know about it. :)

G,day.I have revisited this tune as now retired.
I have the written music but really struggling with the 2nd section.
      Any tips.
Best I can do is practice little runs 1 bar at a time.
If I knew how to I would send a copy to see if correct.
      Cheers Ian

It's a lovely box and it sounds a bit Cajun.
That's a compliment because I love Cajun AND Irish.
Is it normal tuned or Cajun tuned.
Can I play the same reel on a one row C box? ( hohner pokerwork) ?

    • @Drumthrower
      @Drumthrower  Рік тому

@@petercane6376 Hey. Hohner boxes are great for Irish music. Most one row boxes for Irish music are keyed in "D" like my box is. You could certainly play Irish tunes on your "C" box, but to play Irish tunes in typical Irish keys like "D," "Am," "Em," or "G" presents a problem. You may not have all the notes you need to reach those keys on a "C" box. Also, your box will only have 2 sets of reeds, where my box had 4 sets of reeds which gives it more depth and power, if you will. :)

My Aunt who was born in either 39 or 40 used to play the Melodeon growing up, which as far as I can tell we fairly common well into 1960s when two row boxes became inexpensive enough for home musicians. The instrument has seen quite the revival over the last 30 years or so, and many sean nos dancers prefer to dance to music played on it since it's light weight and the note layout helps accentuate the rhythm. In any case, they are still the preferred instrument for Cajun of Quebec music, and I am thrilled they are making a come back in Irish music.
