The Rock Concert That Was Run By A Biker Gang

- This is the story about the Altamont Free concert, an outdoor music festival orchestrated by the Rolling Stones. The event has gone down in history as one of Rock and Roll’s darkest days. It was combination of some questionable decisions in terms of organisation that led the event to turn so chaotic. Since this event, there have been few festivals that have come anywhere close to the same amount of lacklustre organisation (with the exception of everyones favourite marketing case study: Fyre Festival).

Some important notes that I had to leave out for narrative/brevity:
- Whilst it was the Grateful Dead who suggested the Hells Angels, the Stones likely had the idea in their head before hand anyway. The Hell's Angels had worked at a number of similar events in the past and frequently associated themselves with rock/hippie culture, especially in California. Given the time period and the context, the suggestion of hiring the Angels wouldn't of been outlandish as it would be today. That being said, it was still a pretty dumb idea.
- A young George Lucas (from the Star War) was actually part of the Maysles film crew at the event, however his camera's focus was malfunctioning, rendering his footage useless.
- There was another venue considered after the first one fell through, making Altamont "Plan D". I omitted this for the sake of brevity.
I was genuienly shocked that this channel isn't big yet. The videos feel like someone who has been in the game for 5 years atleast.
So glad this channel is blowing up
You can feel Jagger’s rapid heart beat through the screen
One of the verses of American Pie was reportedly about this concert.
_And there we were all in one place_
_A generation lost in space_
_With no time left to start again_
_Jack be nimble, Jack be quick_
_Jack Flash sat on a candlestick, 'cuz_
_Fire is the devil's only friend_
_And as I watched him on the stage_
_My hands were clenched in fists of rage_
_No angel born in Hell_
_Could break that Satan's spell_
_And as the flames climbed high into the night_
_To light the sacrificial rite_
_I saw Satan laughing with delight_
_The day the music died_
In college I took a class called "rock music and culture" and we had a day where my teacher brought in the words and we spent pretty much the whole class going through it line by line, it basically covers the history of rock & roll up to that point. Fascinating song.
Great work on this channel, I subscribed. You’ve got a talent for this, keep going!

It’s funny I learned this from Donut Media from their podcast talking about the Hells Angels🤣🤣😭💀
Another great video. Keep them coming please.
Fun fact: Woodstock was one week after the Manson business but somehow didn’t get mentioned…..
Still better than Fyre Festival.
A friend of mine once said of the Grateful Dead: “Can you tell me one of their songs? No? It’s cause they suck.”
Lol I think the Dead is more of an experience, I'm pretty sure people don't just casually listen to them while in the shower but who knows, I listen to all kinds of stuff. Never got into them though, I have to be in a VERY particular mood when I listen to them and that isn't often
I was here before he went mainstream btw
I feel like live music festivals bring out the worst in people 😂😂 my ex hopped a fence at moonrise and somehow got behind the trailers where the musicians were located and decided to sit down and chill with them. When security was like “who are you and how did you get in here?” She took off running and disappeared in the crowd. Still got to watch the whole event lmao
Mon Ter Ray not Mon Terry
You can see how this festival impacted rock songs on the radio. Yeah 70s is still one of the best time for rock music...if you talking about the album charts. On the singles chart it was easy listening and AM radio on the first half of the 70s and disco on the second half. Only glam rock and prog rock really have success on the singles chart.
Average run of the mill festival ever
Love what you're doing man, keep it up
Dude your content is pretty cool
