The "surprise gift" in OP's scenario would have been the pop-up itself PRESENTING you with a free gift you didn't expect to see... which would be surprising... a surprise gift. Then you are also given the freedom to 'accept' or 'deny' the "surprise gift" just offered to you, much like in reality when someone shows up with an unexpected present for you. You could accept their gift, or tell them no thanks. The surprise gift still exists either way. @@laartwork

When this happened, I was a teenager. I had the 5c with the smallest storage available. My mother is an abusive POS who would often leave me stranded with my three year old sister for days to weeks on end. And many times, she would "forget" to pay the phone bill, so I had no contact w the outside world. So the music I had on my phone was a precious reprieve from the stress of trying to care for a toddler by myself, and worrying if we had enough food to last us until my mother deigned to grace us with her presence. I woke up one morning and went to put on the latest song I downloaded to distract my baby sister while I tried to scrounge up some semblance of breakfast. Instead of being relieved that the bill had been paid, I saw 12 of my songs had been replaced with this bullshit album. And it had used up a good chunk of our monthly data to do so. So I couldn't just use youtube to play the music. When I say I was pissed, I mean that is the first time in my life I had ever yeeted a phone. I hadn't thrown something out of anger since I was a toddler. That's how pissed I was.

Plus, it ate up that precious, precious IPad space. They should have given you the choice if you wanted to download it or not. Napster wasn’t so much “musical piracy” as musical revenge. As the major record labels were found guilty in a civil law suit for working together (i.e. defeating competition) to continually raise CD prices. Even though CDs were cheaper to produce than LPs or cassettes. But Sony’s CEO called Rhino’s CEO, who already had Universal’s CEO on speaker phone, and they said, “Hey, we raised the price of CDs to $16 last year. How about $18 this year?”
The industry loves to talk about Napster, but always leave out the anti-trust lawsuit they lost. All Napster did was say, “Hey, fuck those fraudsters.”

Agreed. U2's execution here took the thrill of discovery out of it. While Radiohead's method kindles that magical feeling of finding a great record that just happens to be in the bargain bin (I discovered The Velvet Underground in exactly this way), U2's approach felt more like THAT GUY at the party/dorm/apartment who hijacks the sound system, saying "Dude, you GOTTA hear this band!" It's an immediate turnoff when it feels foisted upon you. Another important factor was that Radiohead maintained a direct connection with their audience, whereas U2 tied their release in with a massive corporation, which detracted from the authenticity and credibility of the music in question. Such overt collaboration with a multinational entity that is perhaps the ultimate embodiment of the pejorative quality of being "corporate" was bound to rub a lot of fans the wrong way.

    Here’s my experience with it.
I found this album after the controversy because I didn’t use iTunes properly until like 4 months after this happened. I had a collection of albums my sister prepared for me for my birthday so I downloaded them all to my iPhone and I was basically going through the whole collection all at once, and when I came across this album I didn’t think much of it since my sister already listened to U2 on her own time. But since it was U2 and since my sister was a 90s kid I thought this was maybe an older album since the cover was in black and white and that was a popular stylized choice for their genres earlier era.
So I got used to the songs, even picked out some favorites while I was at it. But one day my friends and I were at a coffee and donut shop near my high school just talking about random crap and I suddenly heard one of the trending songs from the album playing. I vividly remember getting so excited I stopped our conversation and went “OH, I know this song!” I thought I was gonna look cool as heck showing off the U2 album like it was some old obscure relic, and when I played the song on my phone in sync with the one on the speakers while showing my friends the album art with it, they all just looked at me like I was an idiot and they were like “Oh… okay cool?”
Then I found out about the album being forced down everyone’s throats a couple of weeks later from a different friend group and I felt so stupid I had a change of heart and hated the album. Later I explained myself to my friends from the coffee and donut shop told me they were worried I was somehow a shill or the exact demographic for Apple’s dumb schemes.

I was one of those people ticked off by it. I had limited space and already had to be super careful about what I put on my iPod. Then I had that shoved down my throat. And it was like a virus you couldn't get off of it. I looked up how to, and it took me so freaking long to figure out how to finally delete it. I literally had to go back through my music and redownload things it deleted to make room for their automatically downloaded album. It made me pissed, to say the least...
I love how just from your thumbnail and title, I INSTANTLY knew this was about that particular album of theirs. Every time I hear their band name, it just brings up how annoying that was and makes me not want to listen to their band.
You put it PERFECTLY, they should have just given us the option to say yes or no if we wanted it. I would have said no because of space, and they weren't really the genre of music I was listening to at that point in time. But now they made me never want to listen to them. The only time I've ever heard Bono sing was because he sang a cover song in a film I like, but other than that movie, I will not be listening to him, sorry.

I have a story with this album as well. My mate borrowed my work van and synched up his phone to it. The next day I was driving again and guess what song played every time I turned the keys!!. U2 raised by wolves. Had to show him how to delete it.
It was like an ailment he’d been living with for over a decade!!!

Still shaking my head at how the Apple board was convinced by Tim Cook to fork over the $100 million (according to one report I saw) for the initial exclusive rights to the album. And afaik, no shareholder lawsuit was ever filed over this. Definitely thought that Apple could have offered the option of downloading the album or getting another album for free. But this is what happens when the CEO is such a fan of something that he cannot comprehend that others might not be.

It shows you how deluded and unethical people become with centralized control. They can't help watching you more and more (youtube), attempting to censor what you say (twitter), going through your personal information (facebook), or trying to force you to use their products (google plus, "songs of innocence"). And they can't fathom that it's wrong, they actually get so used to the idea that they start thinking it's cool and they can do it out in the open. Thank god Web 3.0 is replacing these pieces of trash and will have no Zucks, Cooks or Dorseys.

How well I remember this. And how well the enormous presumption involved in it squared with U2's endless sanctimony. Despite installing the app that claimed to get rid of it (from memory it actually left one of the entirely forgettable songs on my iPod...), I ended up just dumping Apple products a couple of months later.

  • @CyrusAugustus

This has to be where the writers of the Andy Samberg movie 'Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping' got the idea.
He plays a later-career Eminem type rap star spoof character, and he makes a deal to release his new album through an appliance company, so it plays automatically through millions of people's home appliances, forced on everyone unexpectedly, it pisses off the whole world, causes a massive blackout over half the U.S., and it was a total flop of an album TOO. 😆
I never would've thought that ridiculous of an idea actually came from a real life incident.. until I watched this video.
    Weh! 😂🤣💀

I'm sure a lot of people would have jumped at it finding the songs they like from the album but this was forced upon us and worst still some songs were deleted in order to make room for it.
