It took me roughly 7.5 YEARS to finally big chop! My theory is the relaxer penetrated and damaged my hair so deeply, it took years to work itself out. The first 3 years were smooth sailing. No big chop, no dramatic change in products. I remember thinking “Wow, this was really easy. Why did I wait so long?” Then, the fallout. My hair started breaking around the edges first, then the rest of head. It was a disaster. I tried everything and couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. It turns out, it was nothing more than my natural hair coming in. The hair I had for the first 3 years was all still relaxed hair, even the new growth. I thought I had wavy hair, but it turns out I have curls! Thick, tight curls. So if you’ve been natural for a while and were doing well, then suddenly experience massive breakage and shedding, it might just be that your natural hair is finally coming in. Yes, even after a few years. It makes me wonder what’s really in these relaxers other than lye, and how long it really takes to process relaxer out of your scalp and hair. Hang in there, ladies!
I really want to go natural but my mom doesn't like it and says it's just called "being lazy". I totally disagree. I've never liked perms but was always forced to. I really wanna see how long and healthy i can get.
JaY CoLe I see alot of young black girls like u on here saying ur mom won't let y'all go natural. Educate ur mom's and show her the beauty of natural hair.
I decided to transition with weaves, my hair grew so much but on the other hand, my leave out was so short and straight. For this reason o continuously straightened my hair until eventually my hair was so damaged it looked permed again! So I transitioned again this time with braids and twists and I haven't put heat on my hair since September and it's the longest it's ever been! I'm so excited
I've been transitioning for 22 months and I'm actually a little afraid to chop my own hair. I want a certain shape after I relinquish the relaxed ends. I might cut it myself and then go to a stylist for a nice shape up. I'm happy with my decision to transition for 2 years though. I'll be 24 months post relaxer the end of November...but I'm afraid! I've gotten so comfortable with my routine.
Hi, Thanks for this video I've been natural for 3 years but I watch all of your videos because I love the way you explain things and that you use scientific facts to back up what you are saying. I transitioned for a year but I also wish I had big chopped sooner.
Thank you for responding, and the update really appreciate your Professionalism regarding the matter! Enjoy your weekend 💗 (your channel is super informative) 👏🏾👏🏾🐚
Thanks for the always realistic, thoughtful and me meticulous info you provide. I am 3.5 years post relaxer and 1.5 years post big chop. Information like the one you provide have helped me tremendously and will surely help others as they transition. I also have to rave about your 'real protein treatment.' as someone who is protein sensitive, I use a teaspoons or two every two months to ensure that my hair stays strong. Always leaves it strong, soft and damage free!
I just found your channel and truth be told am so inspired. You are very informative and good at you do. I am currently transitioning and I live your channel. Thanks !
As always great video. I transitioned for a year and now I regret it. I wish I would have experimented with color and very very short styles instead of holding on to the dead damaged relaxed ends.
The journey of transitioning is definitely not quick if your trying to make it to a year i can't wait till my journey's over i'm currently 7months post relaxer
This video is awesome! I got so excited when I saw this pop up in my subscriptions because I myself am a "transitioner" and I kind of had an idea of what to expect when I finally cut off my relaxed ends. But I must admit transitioning is far from an easy process for me. For the most part, it is not too hard to hide my relaxed ends thanks to perm rods but that detangling process is a nightmare. Luckily I am almost done (about 2 years post) and I cannot wait to be fully natural. Thank you for posting! 😁
I agree, transitioning is not really easy. I personally think it's way less work to BC early than to long term transition. I'm almost 2 years in, well I will be in January, and then it's snip snip. As for detangling, I find that it helps to use coconut oil and detangle my hair into twists before washing it and then I pretty much have to do it again after washing it.
back2s0ul I knew I wasn't alone, lol! I will be big chopping soon as well and your coconut oil idea sounds good. I don't care of it takes longer, I just want to minimize the tangling. Thanks for the tip and congrats on your 2 year anniversary coming up!
KinkyCurlyDiva16 Transitioning is not easy, but it is well worth it if you don't like having short hair or have a big head like me lol. I also cut every 2-months and I find that it makes a world of a difference after every cut. I have always wanted to try the inversion method but I wasn't sure if it would actually work for me. How often do you do it?
People sometimes refer to transitioning as easier b/c you don't have to give up your length to go natural. But, I hear you, transitioning is a bit stressful. That's how I went natural.
Exactly! Nothing easy about detangling the two different textures. That's why so many people that set a time goal for transitioning get frustrated and cut it sooner.
I am sooo happy you posted this video!!!!! Can you please post another video about detangling transitioning hair.I am about 8 months post relaxer now and detangling is so hard for me.I would love to see a video about that t would really help,I would also love to see a video about what you are suppose to do after you chop of your permed ends. And is it ok to color your hair after you chop the permed hair off?
Angie Pool I suggest to avoid detangling all together by wearing your hair in styles that avoid tangles, like mini twist. Your 8 months post so most of your length at this point is probably the relaxed ends. As your natural hair grows out, you tangling issue will reduce. As far as coloring, its really up to you. They can be damaging, so you would have to be more observant of the health of your hair. Enjoy your hair now and enjoy your hair after you big chop.
I really like your videos. I shared this one on Fb. I transitioned all the way. I never "BC" my hair. The colored and relaxed hair either was "trimmed" off, broke off (d/t handling), or shed off. My date of being "totally naturally" is unknown, so I just say it has been 4 years since my last relaxer. :-) Thanks GreenBeautyChannel™ for sharing.
Awww. My fb comment was up there. I love your videos. You use diagrams and animation to further explain/shpw what you are talking about. Most UA-camrs just talk and talk. Thank you for creating such thought out videos.
I love it black hair education this is helpful to me as a transitioner from relaxed to natural. Currently, I am 9 months post relaxer I can not wait to see the results of my natural hair texture, once I get my big chop.
Helpful insight as always! I've personally big chopped my hair a couple of times before, yet ultimately never knew what I currently know now (great thanks to your videos too). So currently am back to transitioning. Longest transition I've done in the past although was 6 months lol. I'll see how it goes.
There is nothing wrong with cutting your hair but, if length retention is your goal, have patience and stick with it. You hair is growing but, due to its tight texture, it’s hard to notice the length right away.
Great video, wish I had this information last year before I "big chopped" especially about the shrinkage.......I probably would have continued transitioning or at least a little longer!
Thank You soooo much for responding to me..I just had box braids and I took them down and it was a pain to get through my hair and I noticed that it was just my permed hair not my natural hair.the same way your video but I didn't want to get braids to often after watching your video about braids.now I am just wearing a bun.I am very active so its hard for me to keep a style for a long time.even washing my hair is hard just because of the two textures.
I haven't had a relaxer since April 2015 and now it's almost September 2016. I had been wearing my hair in braids and cornrows since April 2016. I'm in no hurry to cut off my relaxed ends. My hair has been growing a lot since October 2014 since I first started wearing it braided a lot. I wore it braided from October 2014 to April 2015. Then I got it relaxed in April 2015 and I have not gotten it relaxed since. I will wait a few years until my natural hair is below my chest before I cut my relaxed ends. I'm thinking about getting a relaxer again one day in 4 years or sooner so I may decide not to cut my relaxed ends.
I had fine/thin see thru hair around the front and near the middle....I've been trying to get definition to those parts. My hair dries fast, so I always braid it up and try to keep it moisturized and oil. I'm interested more in healthy hair first. What suggestions do you have?
I recently heat damaged my hair this weekend because I wanted to flat iron my hair to see how long it was so now I hve to transition because I rly dont want to big chop the funy thing is is that I was already natural for 10 months before I heat damaged my hair
Great video! I was fortunate enough to have been able obtain tons of information during my transition. Your video is very informative to those who are faced with the challenge to go natural. Thank you. Looking forward to the next video.
I wish I would have seen this video when I was transitioning! I spent years, literally, watching videos before I transitioned. I learned how to style, the LOC method, etc. But not so much on how to transition well and what was going on. Needless to say, I lasted two months and BC'd. I did love seeing my hair flourish from nothing, so I guess it wasn't a total loss.
I recently started to go natural and I am still trying find the right products for my hair. But I did just get your hydrolyzed weat protein and since I have never done a protein treatment this should be an interesting experience. Also if there is any advice you could give me about the right products to use I'd love you for it 😄
Hey Love, your captcha is down on your website which is preventing registrations, I am so sold on you, you know what your talking about so I know your products will be on point. Thank you, you’ve given me hope.
I really want to go back natural, the only reason i relaxed my hair is because i was nasty for my hair (im a jamaican btw if ypu know you know) and after i relaxed it i got excited of the fact that i can finally get to comb my own but as months flew by i really started to miss my natural hair😢 i wanna go back but i dont wanna do the big chop.
I've suddenly decided to no longer relax my hair and I'm opting to heat straighten instead. I'd love to learn how best to heat-train my hair during my transition.
Hello I'm transitioning back to natural hair.I want to find the porosity of my hair but putting a hair strand in a cup of water doesn't seem to help determine whats my porosity.I've done this test several times with healthy strands, strands with split ends, and even fake hair and I alway get the same result for all of them. Is there a better way to determine hair porosity.
hi! I'm 47 yrs old. I got gray hair sooo... what natural suggest you can give to do to my hair? most people when they got gray hair they colored their hair. in your case you can go natural because you still young and no white hair yet. so what advice? just honestly thanks and reply please
I feel the same way. For the last year I've been saying I want to go natural or at least perm less. I perm every 30 days STILL because I don't know what to do with my hair once new-growth comes in. This IS HARD! And the breakage...omg...
I've been relaxing my hair for 16 years. I decided to go natural a few months ago. I have no actual routine...I don't wear any wigs or weaves. I used to have hair past the shoulder blade now it sit atop of my shoulders. I have a combination of 2c, 3a, and 3b hair
My hair is mostly dry at the roots I cant obviously not cut my hair that short 😰 I would have to shave!! I need help!!! I do weekly deep conditioning and I do not use any products whatsoever
I'm Transitioning I'm 19 weeks post.....my new growth is alwayssssss dry no matter what I do.....It would be soft when I moisturize and it's damp or wet but as soon as my hair dries it hard tangled and difficult to comb and my relaxed ends are smooth and soft and tangle free.....I believe I have 4c hair.....I need help
then what products will work my wavy pattern is coming back from a curly park that made my hair straight not curlymy hair is dry ,frizzy Shea butter ,Argain oil burn my scalp dry my roots I cut my hair and that didn't help nothing all so what can I do ?
My mother recommends using OUIDAD products. But they are expensive. She gets them at a discount bc she's a hairstylist. I have hair that is always DRY to heat damage
I grew my hair out last year when I cut the relaxed hair and I was beautiful so I left it and then later I relaxed it and now it's transitioning again and my mom thinks I should cut off my relaxed hair and let it grow out but idk because everytime I cut my hair ppl say I look like a boy some even mistake me as a boy so idk what I should do can u help me?
I big chopped so my hair is short but I wear twist outs and bows on the side of my hair and ear rings and necklaces and people never mistake me for a boy try that. Or wear girly clothes maybe?
So I've been transitioning for a year and a half now. My problem is my hair feels like it isn't "natural" at the roots. My hair grew but there is not type of curl patterns at my roots, my hair look completely relaxed. I feel like my natural hair is just strait(frizzy).
can I send you pics and on my newly transitioning hair;2 wks now. I had 4c hair before relaxed. I would like for advice. I think its best for u to see it.
the first time I was processing my hair. the cream wouldn't work. My hairdresser add the cream each time to my hair in the same day before it was processed. Third time after washing out my hair and adding the cream that same day she used a maximum optium cream and it didn't burn but it worked. Someone told me that I shouldn't have cream my hair if the cream wasn't working.
Moreover before my 4c hair was processed it was thick and had shoulder length when brushed back. I also had alot of hair which would take hours to comb.
Wow very very interesting this is what am going true write now ,,please darling what am i going to do for it or what product am i going to use please please i will be waiting for your Reply thanks
I watch all of these videos and think they are brilliant but my hair is so shit. I can never style it naturally as I don't know how and also it's ugly as it's so short so since I was 15 I always got my hair braided (I'm now 22). I'd literally take the extensions out and a day or two after get them rebraided as I just don't get my natural hair. It's so course, short, when I brush it down it bounces up it's just useless. Wish I could go natural and find a style that looks good but seems that'll never happen
+Felicia Cooke agree to disagree. So called natural use all kind of chemicals in their hair to get it curly but never wearing their hair in its natural state. When my mom wore her hair natural back in the seventies. They wore their hair natural. Today it's all the same chemicals in different forms.
We don’t use chemicals to get our hair curly . What was she talking about? My hair is naturally curly and yes is defined more when I have conditioner or gel in it but no chemicals .
Awww. My fb comment was up there. I love your videos. You use diagrams and animation to further explain/shpw what you are talking about. Most UA-camrs just talk and talk. Thank you for creating such thought out videos.

Just do it! Your life your decisions. Going natrual was one of the best decisions I have ever taken.
JaY CoLe Lol @ "being lazy". Natural hair can be a lot of work, that's one of the reasons I almost didn't stop relaxing my hair.
I consider permimg your natural hair being lazy because you don't want to put up with your own natural hair.

great video - as always! I'm transitioning, and am currently 10months post relaxer, so this "101" is perfectly timely.
I just reached 10 months post relaxer today, and 3 months post big chop, currently working on this month's update video!

As always great video. I transitioned for a year and now I regret it. I wish I would have experimented with color and very very short styles instead of holding on to the dead damaged relaxed ends.

Transitioning is not easy, but it is well worth it if you don't like having short hair or have a big head like me lol. I also cut every 2-months and I find that it makes a world of a difference after every cut. I have always wanted to try the inversion method but I wasn't sure if it would actually work for me. How often do you do it?
Please do a video on how to grow eyebrows.
Very informational video. I had a very short transition and bc after almost a semester in school - I just couldn't deal with the extreme textures!
its not the easy method lol it's stressful.

I love it black hair education this is helpful to me as a transitioner from relaxed to natural. Currently, I am 9 months post relaxer I can not wait to see the results of my natural hair texture, once I get my big chop.

Another great video!!!
+Daniella Douvert thank u for the advice I act like a tom boy so I guess that's why
It possible l should grow my natural hair without any products
So I've been transitioning for a year and a half now. My problem is my hair feels like it isn't "natural" at the roots. My hair grew but there is not type of curl patterns at my roots, my hair look completely relaxed. I feel like my natural hair is just strait(frizzy).
Jazmine Johnson yea me too makes me think my hair is still relaxed Lol
Awsome video
Wow
So does the mean I need to cut it or not😭🤔
Well you transition until you have a comfortable length to where you can cut.
10yrs ago 😮 I'm washing this in 2024
Im transitioning from a short cut, and my struggle is the realist
I'm not patient!!
😂
can I send you pics and on my newly transitioning hair;2 wks now.
I also had alot of hair which would take hours to comb.
and it had high porosity.
it was also black but now its like a burnt brown when light is shone on it.
so I need advice on how to get my natural hair back.
Wow very very interesting this is what am going true write now ,,please darling what am i going to do for it or what product am i going to use please please i will be waiting for your Reply thanks
I'm transitioning and buns are the devil. My hair is so matted and tangled at the root after a few days
Wish I could go natural and find a style that looks good but seems that'll never happen
wish i saw this 2 yrs ago
That animation really looks like you
Alibeeee lol
Why do you say because it's relaxed its damage. All relaxed ends are not damaged hair.
+Felicia Cooke agree to disagree. So called natural use all kind of chemicals in their hair to get it curly but never wearing their hair in its natural state. When my mom wore her hair natural back in the seventies. They wore their hair natural. Today it's all the same chemicals in different forms.
+kimberly route what chemicals? if your hair is in its natural state (color and curl pattern) its natural
+Abi Owusu i don't know what you're talking about.
+kimberly route you said naturals use chemicals to get their hair curly.
We don’t use chemicals to get our hair curly . What was she talking about? My hair is naturally curly and yes is defined more when I have conditioner or gel in it but no chemicals .
Transition method never was called the easy method... Who did that? 😂There is nothing easy about transitioning..
Awww. My fb comment was up there. I love your videos. You use diagrams and animation to further explain/shpw what you are talking about. Most UA-camrs just talk and talk. Thank you for creating such thought out videos.
Cassie Best Ever! Thanks Cassie :-)
