    It took me roughly 7.5 YEARS to finally big chop! My theory is the relaxer penetrated and damaged my hair so deeply, it took years to work itself out. The first 3 years were smooth sailing. No big chop, no dramatic change in products. I remember thinking “Wow, this was really easy. Why did I wait so long?” Then, the fallout. My hair started breaking around the edges first, then the rest of head. It was a disaster. I tried everything and couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. It turns out, it was nothing more than my natural hair coming in. The hair I had for the first 3 years was all still relaxed hair, even the new growth. I thought I had wavy hair, but it turns out I have curls! Thick, tight curls. So if you’ve been natural for a while and were doing well, then suddenly experience massive breakage and shedding, it might just be that your natural hair is finally coming in. Yes, even after a few years. It makes me wonder what’s really in these relaxers other than lye, and how long it really takes to process relaxer out of your scalp and hair. Hang in there, ladies!

    I decided to transition with weaves, my hair grew so much but on the other hand, my leave out was so short and straight. For this reason o continuously straightened my hair until eventually my hair was so damaged it looked permed again! So I transitioned again this time with braids and twists and I haven't put heat on my hair since September and it's the longest it's ever been! I'm so excited

    I've been transitioning for 22 months and I'm actually a little afraid to chop my own hair. I want a certain shape after I relinquish the relaxed ends. I might cut it myself and then go to a stylist for a nice shape up. I'm happy with my decision to transition for 2 years though. I'll be 24 months post relaxer the end of November...but I'm afraid! I've gotten so comfortable with my routine.

    This video is awesome! I got so excited when I saw this pop up in my subscriptions because I myself am a "transitioner" and I kind of had an idea of what to expect when I finally cut off my relaxed ends. But I must admit transitioning is far from an easy process for me. For the most part, it is not too hard to hide my relaxed ends thanks to perm rods but that detangling process is a nightmare. Luckily I am almost done (about 2 years post) and I cannot wait to be fully natural. Thank you for posting! 😁

    • @back2s0ul
      @back2s0ul 9 років тому +5

      I agree, transitioning is not really easy. I personally think it's way less work to BC early than to long term transition. I'm almost 2 years in, well I will be in January, and then it's snip snip. As for detangling, I find that it helps to use coconut oil and detangle my hair into twists before washing it and then I pretty much have to do it again after washing it.

    • @brybaby141
      @brybaby141 9 років тому +2

      back2s0ul I knew I wasn't alone, lol! I will be big chopping soon as well and your coconut oil idea sounds good. I don't care of it takes longer, I just want to minimize the tangling. Thanks for the tip and congrats on your 2 year anniversary coming up!

      Transitioning is not easy, but it is well worth it if you don't like having short hair or have a big head like me lol. I also cut every 2-months and I find that it makes a world of a difference after every cut. I have always wanted to try the inversion method but I wasn't sure if it would actually work for me. How often do you do it?

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  9 років тому +1

      Angie Pool I suggest to avoid detangling all together by wearing your hair in styles that avoid tangles, like mini twist. Your 8 months post so most of your length at this point is probably the relaxed ends. As your natural hair grows out, you tangling issue will reduce. As far as coloring, its really up to you.They can be damaging, so you would have to be more observant of the health of your hair. Enjoy your hair now and enjoy your hair after you big chop.

    I haven't had a relaxer since April 2015 and now it's almost September 2016. I had been wearing my hair in braids and cornrows since April 2016. I'm in no hurry to cut off my relaxed ends. My hair has been growing a lot since October 2014 since I first started wearing it braided a lot. I wore it braided from October 2014 to April 2015. Then I got it relaxed in April 2015 and I have not gotten it relaxed since. I will wait a few years until my natural hair is below my chest before I cut my relaxed ends. I'm thinking about getting a relaxer again one day in 4 years or sooner so I may decide not to cut my relaxed ends.

      I big chopped so my hair is short but I wear twist outs and bows on the side of my hair and ear rings and necklaces and people never mistake me for a boy try that. Or wear girly clothes maybe?

    So I've been transitioning for a year and a half now. My problem is my hair feels like it isn't "natural" at the roots. My hair grew but there is not type of curl patterns at my roots, my hair look completely relaxed. I feel like my natural hair is just strait(frizzy).

      I feel the same way. For the last year I've been saying I want to go natural or at least perm less. I perm every 30 days STILL because I don't know what to do with my hair once new-growth comes in. This IS HARD! And the breakage...omg...

      the first time I was processing my hair. the cream wouldn't work. My hairdresser add the cream each time to my hair in the same day before it was processed. Third time after washing out my hair and adding the cream that same day she used a maximum optium cream and it didn't burn but it worked. Someone told me that I shouldn't have cream my hair if the cream wasn't working.

      Moreover before my 4c hair was processed it was thick and had shoulder length when brushed back. I also had alot of hair which would take hours to comb.

      and it had high porosity.

    I watch all of these videos and think they are brilliant but my hair is so shit. I can never style it naturally as I don't know how and also it's ugly as it's so short so since I was 15 I always got my hair braided (I'm now 22). I'd literally take the extensions out and a day or two after get them rebraided as I just don't get my natural hair. It's so course, short, when I brush it down it bounces up it's just useless. Wish I could go natural and find a style that looks good but seems that'll never happen

    Why do you say because it's relaxed its damage. All relaxed ends are not damaged hair.

      +Felicia Cooke agree to disagree. So called natural use all kind of chemicals in their hair to get it curly but never wearing their hair in its natural state. When my mom wore her hair natural back in the seventies. They wore their hair natural. Today it's all the same chemicals in different forms.

      +kimberly route what chemicals? if your hair is in its natural state (color and curl pattern) its natural

      We don’t use chemicals to get our hair curly . What was she talking about?My hair is naturally curly and yes is defined more when I have conditioner or gel in it but no chemicals .

    Awww. My fb comment was up there. I love your videos. You use diagrams and animation to further explain/shpw what you are talking about. Most UA-camrs just talk and talk. Thank you for creating such thought out videos.
