- Revisiting the location from my 2017 video "Blasting Down Bad Track". Power for today's train is PREX 3001. There has been some tie replacement through here since the last time I filmed this crossing but the train leans and rocks just as much. Note the plow has been notched so it does not scrape the uneven rails. This train has 9 cars, 7 empty cement hoppers for Lafarge and 2 for Johns Manville in Defiance. The crew cuts away the 2 cars for Defiance and sets up to put the PREX 3054 on the Cecil cars.
The MSO dba Napoleon Defiance & Western Railway is owned by Pioneer Railcorp which was recently bought by a shitty hedge fund. The first thing they did was list 30 locomotives for sale to make a quick buck.
This line was formerly the Maumee and Western Railway (MAW), Indiana Highrail, Norfolk Western and the Wabash Railroad's 5th district.
Also note the first minute is 8 minutes of real time footage condensed through my editor's variable speed feature.

Its called FRA excepted track. No matter what occupied passenger trains may never enter this type of track as per regulations. The max speed is 10 MPH, sometimes lower

On jobs like this the biggest energy is sheer boredom. Far more danger involved in taking an 18wheeler over the interstate at 70mph

Interesting. There is quite a lot of work needed on the first stretch of line in this video. I'm sure that in the UK it would be illegal to run a train over track this bad!

The track near me still had 1917 Illinois-made rails until recently and probably some or many remaining on some sections. Except, it is in much better state
They need to rip the whole line out and lay brand new tracks.

I'm guessing some ballast and a tamper is too much to ask for, even to borrow from another rr. What they really need is an undercutter, but if they run one there they wouldn't have a rr left. Notching rail holes in the ends of the locomotive is pathetic and something a third world country would do that doesn't know any better.
That stretch at the start looks like an instant derailment.

USA innovation: fix the track? or modify the train to fit on the broken track?
I find this line to be interesting and entertaining just the way it is. It is not a class 1 road, so why make it that way? The harmonic rocking is priceless, and makes for a fun viewing experience. The only improvement i would add to this line would be an old Alco for a great smoke show to go with the slow rocking creep.
