How to Make A Moonshine Still - Time-Lapse

  • Copper stills also have a storied history in the United States. The phrase "moonshine still" doesn't refer to what the stills are meant to distill. It's actually just the term used to describe a small copper still. And these types of stills are actually multi-purpose - they can be used to distill water, essential oils, fuel alcohol, spirits, and yes, with the proper permits and safety precautions, moonshine.
    In this video I make moonshine still in under 3 minutes. I'm using a copper still kit by Clawhammer Supply: www.clawhammer...
    The actual real-time process only took me about 2.5 hours. If you're experienced metal-worker, expect to finish in about the same amount of time (if not less!). If you've never built anything like this, it's very doable but will likely take longer.
    Note: distilling alcohol is illegal without a federal fuel alcohol or distilled spirit plant permit as well as relevant state permits. Our distillation equipment is designed for legal uses only and the information in this video is for educational purposes only.

    I would like to point out your air filters are color coded p100's, (particulate 99.9%,) and not for chemical fumes like solder smoke. Awesome video, thank you.

    Great video. Although I can't help but notice it strange that your company is called clawhammer and most of your music features 3 finger "Scruggs style" banjo. (How is that for nitpicking? No pun intended). Seriously though... this makes me want to buy some copper sheets and some lead free solder. Although I am sure I will change my mind when I price out the copper sheets.

      i'll look into the technique, steam engines sure had rivets, so why not stills, steam engines run far higher pressure too.

      We sell the kits on our site: www.clawhammersupply.com/
      You can also source sheet copper locally but it is often less expensive to buy the kit from us with the pre-cut parts.

      Looks to be some form of plumbing solder, which contains rosin. The burning of rosin releases fumes that'll increase the risk of cancer if inhaled in large amounts.

      +Tony Nelson Copper has a much better thermal conductivity than stainless steel so will require less heating to reach the temperatures you need and also provides a more even spread of heating. With stainless steel you will experience 'heat spots', much like your typical cooking pan! Also copper tends to help bind sulfites (i.e. sulphur-based compounds) which can be an attractive feature for a brewer.
      You will also find that traditional distillers such as those in the Scotch Whisky industry tend to distill in copper stills as a way of following tradition! In the past the only main metals of choice were either copper or iron for their stills - obviously Iron was not a feasible option so copper was chosen.

    how much of a pain in tje ass is that to clean? my god

    • @ClawhammerSupply
      @ClawhammerSupply  6 років тому

      The trick is to do the initial "clean" with fine grit sand paper. Use flexible sanding blocks. That is, unless you want to polish it. Then use a chemical cleaner first. However, it's very difficult to keep these shiny if they're actually used. So, best to lightly sand out of the gate. Makes cleaning it up a breeze.
