    I just got my new 5 gallon 3 pot still .I plan on doing a cleaning run tomorrow thenk, (its all stainless except of course the condenser) I'll distill water a few runs, trying to learn this new still the best i can, then move on to actual alcohol brewing. I am a rookie at this and in my opinion I'm not ready to run off a batch of refreshment just as soon as I fire the still up. i want to learn how long it takes the pot to get hot, and take notes as i go distilling water until i feel like im ready to make an actual run .. Time out the entire process until everything begins to become second nature to me. I have helped run illegal stills back 30 to 35 yrs ago but these new stills make it much simpler and cheaper to get the job done.It doesnt take 3 full days to set it up lol.. You dont have to build a rock mound around the pot either like in the those days.Take care everyone and God Bless

    Do you heat the thumper too? and does the input inside the thumper have to be in liquid?

    • @zachhoepfer521
      @zachhoepfer521 3 місяці тому +1

      I currently work in the distillation unit of an ethanol plant and this is the part that confuses me too. Theoretically, you would have enough heat entering the thumper to continue evaporation (and condensation in the second riser tube) but I feel like it would be very inefficient. Heating the thumper would (in my mind) speed up the proof-up step as you would be double boiling your product.

    Is the doubler heated too? How does the vapor turn into liquid after the first section of the still?

    • @justindarst374
      @justindarst374 2 роки тому

      No it’s not, as the steam hits the cooler liquid in it. It will recondense into liquid form. As the process moves along temp will increase until it reaches steam form again. Thus sending it out to the worm. At least this is my basic understanding of it

    The wormcoil you said is technically called a “shell and tube” heat exchanger they use them in hvac applications
    I mean no disrespect just thought I’d let you know

    • @danielanthony1054
      @danielanthony1054 6 місяців тому

      it is not. there's 2 types of condensers in the world of distilling. worm condensers which are a copper coil inside of a tub, and then there's shell and tube condensers which is made up of a large tube sealed on both ends and has a bunch of pipes running in between.
      shell and tube condensers are more efficient but worm coils are easier and cheaper to make. plus to account for the efficiency you can cycle your water faster with a pump or run cooler water through it.

      you'll never minimise your heads. you can play with the abv but you'll get the same volume of methanol and acetone each time. the tails you can just stop the distillation when you get to that part
