My grandmother told me once, "Don't ever wear white when you are riding a steam train, and you know you'll be going through tunnels.". She said whatever you were wearing that was white wouldn't stay white for long and would never be white again after that. As far as I know, she only rode a train once, and that was from Durham NC to Chicago, Illinois, to visit my grandfather, who was stationed there during WWII. My grandmother never liked to stray to far from home, for to long. She must have really loved that man to do that. That's what my grandfather and her sister thought at least. So my grandfather proposed.

In America, Locomotives are the most powerful because
30% of steam is for traction and
70% is to blow the whistle every 3 seconds throughout the entire journey.
We love steam, so let us hear the engines work :)

    • @Neenockamockawok

It is different, but you have to realize that most videos are taken at grade crossings, which we have a lot more of, and there are specific signals they have to use per NORAC. I certainly understand the appeal of hearing it work, but for pure access, you're always going to get a lot of whistle in videos

Most engines of that era burned wood, therefore produced a lot of sparks, sparks that could easily start brush and forest fires. The wide stacks are spark arrestors to prevent such fires.
