Those two points that you pointed out are the reason we use the BRS in the first place. Its half the weight of this one and super inexpensive. The packability is a lot smaller as well. If I was going with another stove I'd just bite the bullet and get the Soto Windmaster. Which is actually something I'm thinking about.
My thoughts exactly. BRS is cheapest and lightest. If I was going to spend a lot on a stove, I'm skipping everything in between and going for the Soto Windmaster.
I definitely endorse the windmaster. I have a good number of stoves (only 10, not as many as our resident stove master here) and it never ceases to impress me with its power. Paired with a heat exchanger kettle it’s blisteringly fast. Melted a liter of snow into water in just over 5 min and a full boil in 10 at 20 degrees F and that wasn’t even with the kettle, they was with my halulite duelist
I love the BRS for all the reasons said here. But it does burn through more fuel faster and especially sucks in breezy conditions and becomes weaker as your canister gets emptier this leading to even longer boil times each time you use your canister until it's all empty. I ended up getting a MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe to try out because it was on sale with a big discount at a local retailer. I still ended up getting a Windmaster too because so many love theirs. Honestly both are great and will burn fuel more efficiently giving you more value out of each canister, perform better in wind, and burn with almost same pressure on nearly empty canister as a full canister making it so boil times remain faster and consistent due to their micro regulators. No issues with the pezo igniter on the MSR yet but I took the Soto up into the Wind Rivers last summer and its igniter stopped working on me in our higher camps and had to light it manually with a lighter. Only when we got lower again did it start working again.
Great video Ernie. I use these stoves a lot backpacking, but lately I noticed the butane mix cannisters are becoming harder to find. Went to Walmart and they were completely out of stock, not even any green Coleman propane cylinders. No denatured alcohol either. But found 2 gallons at Lowes. Might have to go back to the Trangia. 🤔

Looks like the optimus crux lite stove.I own the optimus crux and absolutely love it. I have owned it for 8 years and have felt no need to get another canister stove.
I have the 117t which is the remote stove It is excellent and only 96g A super lightweight and very stable stove When you keep the pot supports folded, the stove fits into my heat exchange pot, which makes it almost wind proof As said the simmer control goes to almost nothing so long term cooking is superb
Many years ago I went with this stove over the FMS 300T by the same company. FireMaple were the Chinese branded Olicamp stoves. The BRS 3000 gets its name from being a knockoff FMS-300T. This was a solid stove for years for me before I switched to the Soto Amicus and then to alcohol stoves.
The BRS is not a knockoff of any of the Fire Maple stoves, it's a completely independant design. If it was a knock off it would look identical and weigh the same but it looks nothing like it and it's almost half the weight.

I'd get it. I have the Soto Amicus, Trangia gas burner, the Coleman Peak burner and the Trangia alcohol burner. Looks like something fun to use when doing yard work on a cold day for a hot drink or something!
I feel like if someone is cooking something more than boiling water and wanting to simmer then the fire maple looks to be better overall. Even with good flame control the wider spread seems better to me for some reason than a smaller more central flame for general overall cooking.
This is definitely true for wider pots or pans. Simmer control is important but also flame width too. For select trips I like to make pancakes in a MSR skillet pan. Pancakes turn out way better with a wider flame with good simmer control.
@@WasatchWill Yeah I think wider is pretty much better across the board, more even heat and less scorching on a specific spot (easier on the pot as well). A tri-layer cooking vessel like the Stanley skillet makes a big difference. For cooking I like my Coleman dual fuel stove but its size makes it a different category than these ultralights.

10 grams of fuel to boil 2 cups water is pretty inefficient for those stoves. It should be down to the 6-8 grams. slowing down the burn rate will help a a lot. My 2 cents.
I will suggest to try the Optimus Crux stove, it is 90 grams but the head folds and is very packable, the bag is designed so it can be put underneath the canister (where the bottom is concave). Very good simmer too
I still prefer the Olicamp Ion Micro ti srove which is what the BRS is a copy of. It's 1.5 ounces but way stronger and burlier than the BRS. The arms on my BRS started getting soft after a couples of uses and I just didn't trust it for extended trips. I've had no such issues with the Micro ti. That said, I gave the BRS to a buddy and he's still using it when we hike together.
Well, this stove gets sold under many brands. I believe monataur gnad was an early one - eight or so years ago. Got it for the same price the brs 3000 is today. It's good quality, I like it.

Comparing the prices and the weight, someone on a fixed income, I would have to go with the BRS. I do like the Fire Maple with the wider pot supports, but as you asked, "Is it worth the money?" I'm not sure a few ounces can justify the cost ... but that's just me. By the way, I would love to see a comparison between the BRS or Fire Maple and the Primus Classic using a pot with a larger base. I know the Primus Classic is heavier, but I like the fixed pot support. It seems as though it would be more stable, although I could be wrong. Thanks again for the review.
Will you be comparing the FMS-116T to the original Optimus Crux? And the competitors MSR Pocket Rocket/ Kovea Supalite? (MSR us the American distributor for Kovea, so Pocket Rocket and Supalite are the same stove.) And when will you acquire the original FMS-300T?
This is a pretty old stove, modeled after the Optimus Crux Lite. Personally, I'd take the sub 1oz penalty and get an actual, original, Optimus Crux (not the Lite), if I wanted this type of design. It has the added benefit of having a folding top that allows it to pack and nestle a bit better. But really, there are better designs on the market these days. I lean towards solid and reliable for stoves and find it worth an ounce to carry a good stove like a PRD or a Windmaster. I'll make up for that ounce elsewhere.
True story. I was at REI today buying some gas cannisters. The REI clerk asked which stove do I use? After talking MSR, Jetboil, etc. they said they previously used the BRS-3000T. And I was like oh, do you watch UA-cam as a joke and said PaleoHIkerMD just released a video on this, and they responded... "Oh yeah, I watch him as well". I thought to share that, because it may be kind of cool to know that two people at REI were having a conversation about you. :)
Simmer-control is not the same as regulator. Would probably be willing to add 23g to BRS for a regulator? What happens at altitude? What happens to the flame over time? BRS will adjust to simmer for thirty-seconds, but will crap-out soon thereafter. What about Maple? Will it hold a constant flame as the canister pressure changes? Will the simmer hold constant long enough to cook a few pancakes? The more spread-out flame and wind-resistance are bonuses.
Looks like a great stove. But the weight isn’t a factor (at these weights), but the slightly awkward shape. I’ll stick to my Snowpeak Litemax. I have the BRS-3000T, as well, and it’s seriously impressive weight & especially size-wise though! But for me the biggest factor for these types of stoves are will it fit in my cook-set. This one looks a little chunky.
I would say this stove is in direct competition with the Optimus Crux Lite. One problem I've been having with my Optimus Crux Lite is the pot supports seem to be rusting. Yes, rusting. It's supposed to be constructed of stainless but it's my only canister stove that has exhibited any sign of rust. The Fire Maple FMS-116T is similar in size and price, and has a similar flame pattern to the Crux Lite. In my opinion the FMS-116T is superior to the Optimus Crix in that it won't rust, weighs much less, I'd say is just as well built and comes with a usable case. I have both and that's my opinion. As to the lack of robustness of the pot supports, some have claimed that the pot supports of their BRS 3000T have snapped or melted when they subjected to heat for an extended amount of time, but most never experience this. One thing about titanium is that it's so lite that it often makes it seem flimsy when compared to other metals and I have no reason to believe that the pot supports on the Fire Maple FMS-116T are inadequate.
The BRS is specifically designed for use by ultralight backpackers, not designed to take the heavy pots and loads typically used by car campers...Most ultralight backpackers use it with smallish 550ml-750ml Titanium pots, and they only boil small amounts of water with it at any one time, say 250-300ml to make a cup of tea or coffee or rehydrate a pack of instant noodles say, and it excels at this. When Titanium glows red hot it becomes soft and pliable and likely to bend when subjected to a load it was not designed for and when the BRS is turned up to full the Titanium pot supports can indeed glow red hot and become soft. It can also use a lot more gas that way too. So you should not stick a pot on it that weighs over 1kg (at least without keeping hold of the handle/handles) and you should always turn the gas down to a moderate level, where it is also quieter, to save gas and to keep the pot holder arms at a lower temperature.
@@alfoutdoors9660 Thanks for the info. Given the small size of the BRS 3000T I'm not likely to put a pot weighing over 1kg onto it anyway. That's plenty enough to meet most needs of a single person. I would not select the BRS to cook for a group.

@@namelessone5200 Yep! I've been using mine every day for the past few months and mine works well and there appears to be signs of rust, but I'm not sure it's actually rust since there's no pitting, just a rust colored residue. So far it remains solid though.
Looks like a Primus Crux Lite clone in titanium. I just prefer the original Crux that folds, and the convenience of nesting under a gas can outweighs all the rest for me. A wide burner always a plus over a focused jet torch. Its hard to find a bad stove, though there might be one out there. I've yet to find one.
Gas one sells the GS-7900 on Amazon. It's a BRS clone that's identical, normally found for a little cheaper than the BRS and comes with a nice plastic container.
While both these stoves are light, at 10 gr of fuel per 2 cups (473 ml) boil, you will need to either purchase more frequently or carry more fuel. My similar test with 3 stoves (BSR, MSR pocket rocket 2jet boil stash) X 2 pots (750 ml soaks and stash). The Stash used just 5 grams of fuel to boil 500 ml of water. When it’s cold, an efficient stove system is more important to me than initial weight, because I want hot drinks, soup, hot meals, and hot water for both the night and the trail.
I’ve had some good fire maple products over the years. The steel version of this at 70g for just £11 looks a bargain. £15 though for the 49g titanium here in 🇬🇧 so that’s a no brainer.
Unfortunately, unavailable at this time and not sure when or if it will be available again. I would buy it for the case alone. I have the Soto that has an igniter which is a major pulse. Why can’t one of these stoves have it all; light weight, good burn, larger cook surface, good in wind and an igniter? Now that would be a great stove!
Spent a fair amount of time with the cheaper cousin FMS-102. That thing is just an agony to use in any sort of imperfect conditions - sometimes water wouldn't even reach boiling point after 10+ minutes if the ambient was heavily windy (EVEN WHEN USING A WINDSCREEN), the gas canister was running low, outside temperature was 0C and below, or any combination of these factors. This gives me fear to even think about using another Fire Maple stove
Will it cook? It looks like you might be able to actually cook on it. The ability to do more than just boil water at breakneck speed offers greater ease and versatility for camp meals. This is why I find myself gravitating back to stoves with larger burners and better flame control. I like to actually cook. This stove excites me, but price may be a deal breaker. I always love a new stove.
I've had this Chinese cooker for 3 or 4 years now, branded as Czech brand "Pinguin". They usually sell chinese crap, but this one isn't bad. I've burned around 9 or 10 gas canisters with this stove, and never had any issues. Quality is okay, very good flame control and wide flame (I don't like stoves with narrow flame). Only the stability is very poor. I have to be very carefull when using some wider pots, or if I want to stir it up. Ideal for 750ml cups.
The Pinguin Trek camping stove I assume you are referring to is not an ultralight stove as it's made of heavy stainless steel and Aluminium, instead of Titanium...As a result is weighs 95g, almost double the weight of the Fire Maple and it's almost 4 times heavier than the BRS! The reason you are having stability issues is all that weight makes it top heavy when mounted on a canister...The lighter the stove, the lower the centre of gravity is compared to the gas canister and the more stable it is.
Ernie, you do a great job providing info to us out here about all things stoves. But, I wish after these videos the product would be available. This drives me crazy! My conspiracy self thinks now they will mark it up even more. What did you pay for this product?
Honestly wind has never bothered me with the BRS. I have never found it to be overly difficult, or inconvenient to just build a little rock hut for my BRS on windy days. The alpine conditions I primarily hike in though probably helps that, plenty of rocks at higher elevations usually.
That Fire Maple stove is no longer available from Amazon and the BRS sounds like an F-35 taking off with full after burner. I’ll stick with my Windburner, wind resistant, powerful, quiet, dependable will simmer, can’t beat it.
The 116t is a shitload better than the brs. Better build quality, more efficient burner head, better flame pattern, more wind reaistant and not that much heavier.

I always use an aluminum foil wind screen for all of my stoves, so wind effects on stoves is not an issue.
Foil is very light and cheap, carry it.

It might not compare weight wise, but I will take my Soto Amicus or Soto WindMaster over any of them any day of the week and Twice on Sunday!!!

Its hard to find a bad stove, though there might be one out there. I've yet to find one.
Gas one sells the GS-7900 on Amazon. It's a BRS clone that's identical, normally found for a little cheaper than the BRS and comes with a nice plastic container.
According to my friend in China, it is actually made by the same manufacturer as the BRS 3000.
While both these stoves are light, at 10 gr of fuel per 2 cups (473 ml) boil, you will need to either purchase more frequently or carry more fuel. My similar test with 3 stoves (BSR, MSR pocket rocket 2jet boil stash) X 2 pots (750 ml soaks and stash). The Stash used just 5 grams of fuel to boil 500 ml of water. When it’s cold, an efficient stove system is more important to me than initial weight, because I want hot drinks, soup, hot meals, and hot water for both the night and the trail.
Never having heard of it before; what is a “stash” pot?
I’ve had some good fire maple products over the years. The steel version of this at 70g for just £11 looks a bargain. £15 though for the 49g titanium here in 🇬🇧 so that’s a no brainer.
Unfortunately, unavailable at this time and not sure when or if it will be available again. I would buy it for the case alone. I have the Soto that has an igniter which is a major pulse. Why can’t one of these stoves have it all; light weight, good burn, larger cook surface, good in wind and an igniter? Now that would be a great stove!
Spent a fair amount of time with the cheaper cousin FMS-102. That thing is just an agony to use in any sort of imperfect conditions - sometimes water wouldn't even reach boiling point after 10+ minutes if the ambient was heavily windy (EVEN WHEN USING A WINDSCREEN), the gas canister was running low, outside temperature was 0C and below, or any combination of these factors. This gives me fear to even think about using another Fire Maple stove
Will it cook? It looks like you might be able to actually cook on it. The ability to do more than just boil water at breakneck speed offers greater ease and versatility for camp meals. This is why I find myself gravitating back to stoves with larger burners and better flame control. I like to actually cook. This stove excites me, but price may be a deal breaker.

I've had this Chinese cooker for 3 or 4 years now, branded as Czech brand "Pinguin". They usually sell chinese crap, but this one isn't bad. I've burned around 9 or 10 gas canisters with this stove, and never had any issues. Quality is okay, very good flame control and wide flame (I don't like stoves with narrow flame). Only the stability is very poor. I have to be very carefull when using some wider pots, or if I want to stir it up. Ideal for 750ml cups.
The Pinguin Trek camping stove I assume you are referring to is not an ultralight stove as it's made of heavy stainless steel and Aluminium, instead of Titanium...As a result is weighs 95g, almost double the weight of the Fire Maple and it's almost 4 times heavier than the BRS! The reason you are having stability issues is all that weight makes it top heavy when mounted on a canister...The lighter the stove, the lower the centre of gravity is compared to the gas canister and the more stable it is.

Ernie, you do a great job providing info to us out here about all things stoves. But, I wish after these videos the product would be available. This drives me crazy! My conspiracy self thinks now they will mark it up even more.

Honestly wind has never bothered me with the BRS. I have never found it to be overly difficult, or inconvenient to just build a little rock hut for my BRS on windy days. The alpine conditions I primarily hike in though probably helps that, plenty of rocks at higher elevations usually.
I just put my backpack close to it or my food bag.

The BRS is cheaper, lighter and smaller. I’ll find something in my pack to block the wind. BRS still wins.
I think at that price point it would be better to compare it to the Soto amicus

That Fire Maple stove is no longer available from Amazon and the BRS sounds like an F-35 taking off with full after burner. I’ll stick with my Windburner, wind resistant, powerful, quiet, dependable will simmer, can’t beat it.
