Strange Brew is an okay movie overall, but the hypnotically-controlled insane asylum hockey was great. "Luke, give in to the dark side...you knob." Classic👍.
I got into trouble as a wean for quoting this film in school, my teacher had no sense of humour and gave me a 15 minute lecture on how a 6year old shouldn't be watching films like Conan (yet she was weirdly ok with telling us stories from the bible😂)
That one moment where Conan is with Valeria and she holds him to her chest, I imagine it was the moment he opened up to her. Told her about the life he'd lived up to that point. Of course, he doesn't cry, but Valeria could see the sadness in his eyes, for which she went to comfort him. Just a little head canon.
I love this film. Arnold looking like an absolute badass, the fight sequences, the score, even the blood special effects are fantastic! (Sandahl Bergman looking gorgeous might possibly be my first ever crush too)
I remember her from the Weider Muscle & Fitness magazines my brothers used to collect. Schwarzenegger was always in there, but they had some really cool women in there, too. She was one of them.
It's such a classic sword and sorcery movie. It keeps things simple and it works so damn well. Sure it's got that 80's production vibe but otherwise it's held up pretty well against the test of time. And the soundtrack.. It's the stuff of legends by Basil Poledouris. Perfect for those tabletop sessions if you need some epic music. :D
You know, I think the 80's production vibe works for it. Nowadays everything is so digitally framed, altered, and polished, that it feels very sterile. It's especially distracting when trying to create "period" scenery, which just ends up looking like modern people in cosplay. But in this movie, it really does feel like we're watching something out of the Bronze Age.
The Friedrich Nietzshe quote says it all for Conan "That which does not us makes us stronger". The score is completely epic Basil Poledouris knocked it out of the park. John Milius is a total badass that created a masterpiece.
Oh interesting historical fact: many kinds of stone DO burn, once things heat up enough- the stone begins leeching mineral oils and other substances and can actually start burning quite aggressively. It takes a good amount of effort to get to that point but wood and other materials inside the structure burn readily and can quickly get past the point where the stone begins boiling off. Small stone enclosed rooms inside a temple structure like the Mountain of Power also accelerate this process if there is airflow available, basically becoming an oven.
Im glad you noticed that the music speaks whenever the actors don't, which is the point, there are so many ways to tell a story, but a great Director finds the best one, which is what hapened here, a kind of Spaghetti western approach, even to the barren landscape.
The temple burns cause its not 100% stone, there is other combustible (wood, cloths, flags, banners etc) The Conan stories takes place in an Bronze Age kinda era, so wood is still one of the primary components of any structures.
For those who haven't read the originals and might be interested, the relationship between Conan and Valeria which gives such pathos to this film is based on the relationship between Conan and the pirate-queen Belit from "Queen of the Black Coast," one of REH's best Conan stories.
@@VeerleTakino Sci Fi version was terrible. While they did add more from the books, they also REMOVED just as much. Terrible. Children of Dune was MUCH better and with better music.

Funny you should mention Twilight Princess because the very first announcement trailer for TP actually used the music for Conan. So, if you watch the old trailer, you’ll hear the song that plays throughout different parts of this movie.
This is one of my favourite Arnold performances, obviously his english wasn't strong (especially now) so they kept the dialogue minimal and let others talk when necessary, but I always knew, what he said, what he felt, what he thought... it is a great emotional performance, if you have the physical appeal and charisma, show it, don't say it
Every time I watch this,I usually become hysterical with laughter over Arnold's attempts at yelling in pain, which always sounds like "Yayaya".My best friend and I still crack each other up doing imitations of it.
I’m just getting into Conan myself! I saw this for the first time about two weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. I never saw it when back in the 80s, my parents wouldn’t let me. By the time I was old enough, stuff like Conan didn’t interest me. I was into Star Trek which had two series on at the time and Star Wars which was just starting its resurgence. Now with the absolute garbage that is being put out by Disney Star Wars, I finally gave up on it and instead got into reading classics like Conan and the John Carter series. One thing that really cracked me up in the movie was the scene with the camel. I did see the second movie many times on HBO since it was PG and never understood why Conan tried to apologize to the camel. Now I get it!

FYI Justin Long was four years old when this movie came out. Gerry Lopez plays Subotai but his primary claim to fame was as the surfer who meditates on waves. He is from Hawaii like Jason Momoa and Don Ho. The historic Subotai began as Genghis Khan's doorman and ended as the Khan's most formidable General.
The "mustache guy" is Ben Davidson...former defensive lineman for the Oakland Raiders that did some small acting parts. He was an intense player known for his handlebar mustache
Robert E. Howard's Conan short stories deserve much better than these very bad films, and this was the best one about Conan. See those movies more like parodies than actual depiction of Conan.
Whats nice about this movie, evne tho it is not a 100% adaptation, the plot and characters are from various Tomes/Chapters of different Conan's adventures. The Tower of the Elephant (Wich will serve as an inspiration for the Eye of the Serpent jewel Conan and the others steal( in the novel its called the Heart of the elephant) and the Tower they infiltrate) The Queen of the Black Coast (the Pirate Queen Belit and her relationship and story with Conan will be the inspiration for Valeria, her Ending when she comes back from the dead to help him is also taken from the book iirc) Are two that i can think off on the top of my head (been a decade since i last read conans books)
This movie is D&D. Adaptation of Howards' character from his books. There are other movies that get that true feel of what a players want around the table. Conan teh Destroyer, The 13th Warrior, Beast Master, Robin Hood (most of them), The Dragon Slayer.
Since I'm a little late to the party on this, I doubt you'll see it, but in case you do, the "Do you want to live forever" line comes from a real person. It comes from two-time Medal of Honor recipient and US Marine, Daniel Daly, who said it to motivate his men when charging the German lines in World War I, at the Battle of Belleau Wood.
This movie is a lot of fun, and even a bit silly at times. The skeleton from which Conan gets his sword is supposedly a buried Altanean general (from a time "before the seas drank Atlantis"), so the sword is of a superior quality than contemporary swords from Conan's time. In the final fight near the end of the movie he even shatters the sword carried by one of the bad guys with those bangs - that sword happens to be the sword that bad guy stole from Conan's own father.
I have to say, ~10y ago there was this old local movie theater that went under, that the last screening they did was Conan from their old 80s reels, dust and all the shit on the screen. It was epic and as an 80s kid, I was so lucky to see Conan on the big screen, albeit 30 years after the release.
as much as I love "Conan the Barbarian" the one thing wrong is that Conan is described by author/creator Robert e Howard as having black hair and blue eyes.
True - several details such as this are off, and have been criticized. But it's so clear that the filmmakers were trying to do justice and capture the adventure and brooding pathos of the original stories, and rise above mere pastiche, that I can forgive it much.
Unpopular opinion: You guys paid more attention to the comments rather than the movie. Sorry. I LOVE your channel, videos and Emily's comment but this one failed. Why did you even bother to watch it? Constantly distracted by the comments. Try watching it again and not having any distractions, I'm pretty sure you'll get more out of it. And you missed quite a bit actually. By the way, the "What is best in life" is actually a REAL quote from Genghis Khan but paraphrased. Anyway, end rant and keep up the good work. :-)
Ok. Emily is a serious hater of romance movies. But her favorite scene of this movie was a woman who came back from the dead to save her man? You can't get more romantic than that. Is it because it has armor and barbarians in it?
First comment on the side scroll I see: "it was a comic" (inner pedant starts to rage...) My mind shortly after: "The Conan stories were short stories and books, dang it! The comics came 30 years after the original writer died!" Edit: Also, the scene with Doom turning into a snake is the reason why the Evil Overlord list has "I shall not turn into a snake. It never helps."
Fun Factoid: The acolyte who jumps from the cliff at her masters bidding is taken from historical accounts of a real man who had a secret temple in a mountain, who used hashish to mess with his followers heads. He was very powerful and much feared as he was well learned and wise and could manipulate many cities and regions with his own people secretly placed into the service of his enemies. These people were a part of a sect known as Hashishim and is where the word assassin comes from - Hashassin. If you troubled The Boss, they would slip secretly into your room and slit your throat as you slept. If you needed a warning, a knife was left on your pillow to wake up to. That man who Thulsa Doom was partly based on was Hassan I Sabbah. ....THE MORE YOU KNOW.
True, vultures are cool. I was reading stories about strange things falling out of the sky, and there was a story from Australia about it "raining meat". They called scientists out to examine what they collected, and one of them tasted it. Said it tasted like "mutton". And... Turned out to be vulture puke... Apparently they do that sometimes, vomit while they're flying.
The voice is that of actor MAKO who died in 2006 at the age of 72. You will see him in this film as The Wizard. Good question about the wig since Thulsa Doom (who lived and died long before Conan---he was the foe of King Kull---Kevin Sorbo played him in the movie) had a face like a skull. No flesh at all.

When the pervy priest approaches Arnold, I really wanted Arnold to say..."give me your robes, your amulet, and your silly hat...NOW!!!" 😜😁
I got into trouble as a wean for quoting this film in school, my teacher had no sense of humour and gave me a 15 minute lecture on how a 6year old shouldn't be watching films like Conan (yet she was weirdly ok with telling us stories from the bible😂)
She didn't have a problem with the boobs and gore, it was all the pagan religion and mysticism she couldn't handle
Sadly I was sent to a Catholic school filled with teachers determined to ensure we grew up as God fearing Catholics, it didn't work😂
Did she ask you what’s best in life?
@@andrewdyer384 Crom is mightier than any sky god
@@chrisleebowers Crom still lives beneath him 😆
That one moment where Conan is with Valeria and she holds him to her chest, I imagine it was the moment he opened up to her. Told her about the life he'd lived up to that point. Of course, he doesn't cry, but Valeria could see the sadness in his eyes, for which she went to comfort him. Just a little head canon.
Sounds like the plot of a fan fiction story. 👍😁
ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY ENJOYED THIS ONE. AS AN 80s & 90s KID CONAN WAS THE SHIT.
Greatest sound effects in any move is when Doom's head rolls down the steps.
If it's not on the list and you haven't seen it you should add The Thirteenth Warrior (1999).
Probably the most epic movie of the 90s
Best movie music ever. Basil is so underrated.
I Salute You ⚔️
"you took my fathas suoood"
"who aaahhh joo?"
Every single line Arnold has in this movie is my favorite line ever.
I have only one thing to say about this movie. The opening theme. 🔥
Plus the score is so perfect, it not only conveys mood and emotion, at times it says the lines
Im glad you noticed that the music speaks whenever the actors don't, which is the point, there are so many ways to tell a story, but a great Director finds the best one, which is what hapened here, a kind of Spaghetti western approach, even to the barren landscape.
The temple burns cause its not 100% stone, there is other combustible (wood, cloths, flags, banners etc)
The Conan stories takes place in an Bronze Age kinda era, so wood is still one of the primary components of any structures.
For those who haven't read the originals and might be interested, the relationship between Conan and Valeria which gives such pathos to this film is based on the relationship between Conan and the pirate-queen Belit from "Queen of the Black Coast," one of REH's best Conan stories.
Well much as Belit books's Valeria was at times also a love interest although not to Belit's extend.
YES! DO THE DUNE! It's shocking and appalling how few people have reacted to the David Lynch version. Hell, I'd take Sci-Fi channel version!
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 the sci fi version really really wanted you to believe that Paul was a early-00s edgy antihero, and the film suffered for it.
@@VeerleTakino Sci Fi version was terrible. While they did add more from the books, they also REMOVED just as much. Terrible. Children of Dune was MUCH better and with better music.
24:28 "He's not a good actor, so I have to do the crying." lol
“Do you wanna live forever?”
Is the Hyborian Age version of YOLO..
I grew up with my Dad playing this movie’s soundtrack constantly, so every time I hear it I get a massive smile on my face. Easily one of the best movie soundtracks of all time.
The soundtrack is great for working out.
@@bystandah9626 I’m almost certain it’s on my Dad’s workout playlist too lol
You should definitely react to 80s fantasy films; Excalibur, The Dark Crystal, Legend, Return to Oz, Labyrinth, and Willow.
Funny you should mention Twilight Princess because the very first announcement trailer for TP actually used the music for Conan. So, if you watch the old trailer, you’ll hear the song that plays throughout different parts of this movie.
The movie that shaped my childhood. And that opening passage got me into Nietzsche at a far too early age. The score is on my workout playlist!!!
The actress who played the Princess (Valerie Quennessen) died in an auto wreck in 1989 at age 31
It doesn't hurt Arnold's social life to be known around town as "the man with the giant snake!"
The very first movie I ever watch. And what helped my love for Robert E Howard's character Conan
During the final fight scene.” The Original Axe Body Spray “.. I fell down laughing!!
Finally! Someone who is reading the Conan stories. Don't forget Solomon Kane as well.
@@simonbeaird7436 I got an audiobook version as well which collects all the stories from Weird Tales. I just started listening to it but it starts off with Kull the Conqueror, which I know they made that into a film but I heard it’s not so good.
@@Clownboy15 I saw the 'Kull' film once and have no desire to see it again. The Solomon Kane movie is much much better.
@@simonbeaird7436 I’m actually curious to check out the Lionsgate reboot with Jason Mamoa. I had no idea they had made one. It looks kinda stupid, but it could be stupid fun (unlike the Hellboy reboot which was just stupid all around).
@@Clownboy15 The Momoa reboot wasn't a success although I kinda like it. But then again, a lot of people think I'm strange.....😉
Jerry Lopez (who played Subatai) was a pro surfer, not an actor, but did pretty good.
OK...when Conan punched the camel, who else thought... "well, it must be Wednesday!"? 😁
He was laughing at the guy fucking a llama in that tent.
Whoever said this was terrible in the live chat needs smacked.
"Come with me if you want to live forever" - Level 20 lady.
If James Earl Jones removed the vowels from Conan he'd say, "This is CNN."
"Snake be with you" "and also with you"
ROFL
Your commentary is like watching Mystery Science Theater....
07:39 Well, Conan has the PG-13 version.
The greatest pleasure is to vanquish your enemies and chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth and see those dear to them bathed in tears, to ride their horses and clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters. --Genghis Khan.
The world needs a Conan TV series
Masterpiece
The comment on the wizard making tattoo gun sounds for his pen had me laughing hysterically.
Whats nice about this movie, evne tho it is not a 100% adaptation, the plot and characters are from various Tomes/Chapters of different Conan's adventures.
The Tower of the Elephant (Wich will serve as an inspiration for the Eye of the Serpent jewel Conan and the others steal( in the novel its called the Heart of the elephant) and the Tower they infiltrate)
The Queen of the Black Coast (the Pirate Queen Belit and her relationship and story with Conan will be the inspiration for Valeria, her Ending when she comes back from the dead to help him is also taken from the book iirc)
Are two that i can think off on the top of my head (been a decade since i last read conans books)
‘He yeeted that beach into the fire’ 💀☠️💀lol
“Hey. What’s up? Snake be with you.”
😂😂😂
Yesssssss! “What is best in life?”...possibly one of the all time best lead in questions to possibly one of the best responses in a movie EVER!
This movie is D&D. Adaptation of Howards' character from his books.
There are other movies that get that true feel of what a players want around the table.
Conan teh Destroyer, The 13th Warrior, Beast Master, Robin Hood (most of them), The Dragon Slayer.
We need more of these types of movies. It's been far too long
Now I kind of want to see these two react to The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986).
Now that reaction was hilarious and I loved it.
The music in this movie is it's own freaking character! Probably one of tve best tracks I've ever heard. Basil Poledouris was such a legend!
It did not take her long to recognize Mako as the voice of Aku lol
The actor who plays the shorter of James Earl Jones two “Generals” also played Tigris of Gaul in Gladiator.
That would be Sven Ole Thorsen. He's a pro bodybuilder, is one of Arnold's best friends, and has been in just about every one of his films.
Old Sven was also the head of security in Mallrats.
The man who played the king, was also in skyrim. He played Arngier.
Esbern, not Arngier. But they are similar.
The opening music to this movie is perhaps the best in any movie I’ve ever seen
I love the scene of Conan on horseback because it evokes a freedom that we have lost
Ok ok, not sure if anyone said it but I sure am. Conan I am your father!!!. "Conan" Noooooo
I’ve always been fond of playing rangers and paladins, but also had fun with a bard and a war mage.
I can play this movie over and over just for the music! Crom-damn, that is some good shit.
For a good time, watch the movie again with Arnold and director's commentary, they are very funny.
Exactly! 😆
First comment on the side scroll I see: "it was a comic"
(inner pedant starts to rage...)
My mind shortly after: "The Conan stories were short stories and books, dang it! The comics came 30 years after the original writer died!"
Edit: Also, the scene with Doom turning into a snake is the reason why the Evil Overlord list has "I shall not turn into a snake. It never helps."
The best sword and sorcery film ever. And the soundtrack is awesome 👍👍
P.S I have a replica of the sword
Oh you'll never be able to do Caligula on here... lol
Man, that scene where McDowell puts the flower on the dude's buttocks still kills me^^
@@arsenelupin9697 I believe it was unscripted. I laughed my ass off when that happened.
You guys must watch the sequel Conan the destroyer from the year 1984
Fun Factoid: The acolyte who jumps from the cliff at her masters bidding is taken from historical accounts of a real man who had a secret temple in a mountain, who used hashish to mess with his followers heads.
'HE JUST PUNCH A CAMEL?1' It was still legal in the 80s.
Just SUMM Reactions - That's no barbarian..., - that's gentleman!.....
Conan - ...can i push wheel now?!...
What is best in life? Ginger cats. I find your lack of Pippin disturbing. Apart from that, cool reaction. :)
You keep posting, I keep liking. That's the deal, and I'm glad you guys are holding up your end of the bargain. 😏
