This quote hits pretty hard as a father of grown child. "There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child"
Well, It's none other that Max Von Sidow delivering that line and
It's quite emotional, that's what a good actor can do, just a line, perfectly well performed.
On that note, Darth Vader 28:40 AND Ming the merciless 23:24 are BOTH in this flick, whad 'ya know about that?
I'm so glad they opted to delete his death scene meaning he gets to be reunited with his daughter.
You really wanna give that poor guy a hug and tell him everything's gonna be ok after he says that
The score is easily one of the greatest ever composed. Basil Poledouris was a master at channeling the spirit of Wagner and Orff.
Agreed, it's up there with the score to the movie 300.
Fun fact: Whenever I need a testosterone boost. I watch the intro to Conan the Barbarian 1982.
And to think, they wanted to do a contemporary early 80's rock score for the soundtrack as was originally planned. So glad they went this direction for the sound track, it basically made it timeless to appreciate, despite the cinematography. Though I personally love how it aged with minimal dialogue.
Yes
There are moments when the music in THIS movie sounds a bit like the Omen score.
Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!
That is a true prayer to any god. A prayer to live by
Actually legit made this prayer at a LARP when me and my buddy fought off some orcs great times
Sounds epic! did you win?@@joshuawood3055
And Crom said "Lol, lmao even. I like the cut of your jib. Go on and get your revenge, then!"
I say that before eating.
"Conan, what is best in life?" "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and, hear the lamentations of their women."
I think he was trying to say "humiliation of the women" but he butchered it LOL
The line comes from Genghis Khan.
Arnold used this line when he was governor as a joke, they asked hm a question and that was how he answered it
@@theluminary5324no, he meant lamentations. A lamentation is an expression of great sorrow, which his what one would expect from a woman when their men have been crushed and driven before an enemy.
@@glyyytch ah ok...i thought he was trying to say humiliation which is was funny lol
Conan believes in the God Crom, who approves of an individuals courage and tenacity. People don't really "pray" to Crom, in fact it's said it's better to not draw his attention lest he sent more adversity your way to test your resolve. Crom actually looks down on prayer and people begging his intervention because he views it as an act of the weak.
When Conan invokes Crom he basically says "Help me get revenge on those who wronged me, or get the fuck out of my way."
Impressing Crom which is why he sends a Valkyrie to save him from a pitiful death at the hands of a lesser foe.
Damn this movie is great.
In the comics, Conan mentioned how ridiculous some other religions are about praying to their gods with ornate preparations and ritual.
"To pray to Crom, all one has to do is prop up a rock, and start praying."
Norse mythology, similar in some ways to Greek mythology. The gods would engage in a cosmic game of power
amongst themselves essentially using humans as pawns.
Your description of Crom almost makes him look valiant and honorable and stuff, i’d just add that Crom is also a complete @55hole and he doesn’t care about humans at all 😂
@@davestang5454 Those mythologies are similar because they share some proto-indo-european roots.
One of the greatest comics ever and this is one of the greatest action movies ever
Mr. Movies' Conan impression is great. He deserves extra thumbs up for that.
Being honest here, I almost choked up when I heard Mako start narrating. R.I.P. Uncle Iroh. You were a great one.
I was too young to see Conan in theaters, but my folks were big fans of the franchise and had several of the comics so it was a no brainer that they ended up getting the VHS as soon as it dropped and it became one of my all time favorite movies. When I watched ATLA I couldn't help but hear the crazy old wizard everytime Iroh spoke. But now I watch Conan, and I just hear Uncle Iroh.
@@Dilligff I actually saw Conan the Destroyer atba drive-in when I was younger. I had time to see Superman 3 and then later on Conan. Although to be honest, clear detailed mories are gone. Just tiny pieces of the fact that I was there. lol.
"Leaves from the vine

Brave soldier boy

The witch called him a barbarian. "There is a price, Barbarian".
I was about to write the same thing, you beat me to it.
She was never referred to as a witch, and I do not think it is fair for you to cast such a label upon her.

"Barbarian" is really just a catch-all term for a person outside of the normally accepted local civilization.

When I showed my girlfriend this movie, at the end of the Wheel of Pain scene, she exclaimed “Oh! It’s a beefcake machine”
Early early, Soloflex. They originally had bones and skulls strewn about, where others had died pushing the wheel. But they settled on just a single worn down path.
Yeah it's a gristmill. You can see the millstone in the movie.
"Conan, what is best in life?"
"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, watch the reactions of Mrs Movies!"
So in the movie you see two ideologies. Conan's Father believed only in Steel while Doom believed in the power of Flesh. But both of them failed. Conan's Father's sword failed and broke while Doom lost his head.
That is what Conan is pondering about at the end of the movie.
Excalibur (1981) is another fantasy sword and sorcery classic, of course based on the Arthurian legend that holds up.
Nichol Williamson, best Merlin portrayal ever.
They already watch excalibur
Beastmaster also
That movie has the best explanation for the 'Dragon' I ever heard.
The most manly opera ever made. That is not a spoiler, more like a primer. 🙂
Well it's not a spoiler because if they're uploading it to UA-cam then they watched it days ago...
@@GeorgeTropicanaYour insensitivity towards the 0.0000001% watching this reaction without prior knowledge of of this decades old classic, is like chopping up my favorite snake! I am besides myself with grief! 😀
@@torbenkristiansen2742 If the studios ever had reason to think that people who haven't seen the movies, are watching reaction videos of them, then they'd have their lawyers on the phone to Google, and Google would destroy reaction channels. No matter how little of the content you use, or how much you add to it, if people use it as a substitute for the real thing, then it's not fair use. They're just waiting for an excuse to pull that trigger. Fortunately, if there are people who watch reactions to shit they haven't seen, they're keeping quiet. And rightly so, cus that would be WEIRRRRRRRRRD!
@@ashscott6068It is rather flattering when you put so much stock in a singular comment, invoking visions dealing with the fate of this entire platform. Very dramatic, given the breadth and width of the material at hand. These weird people, of which you speak, might not be completely mythical, when it comes to expressing themselves in a way that goes beyond an absolute wow of silence. Which makes your sentiment somewhat utopian in the desired simplicity. Sator Rotas in a square. Order in the center. Chaos at the edges. We do love our little models of the universe. For they make it much simpler to deal with existence as it is! Alas, reality operate with a higher degree of complexity, making it harder to conform to the dream of absolute Order. Not that Anarchy or Chaos is a desirable state of affairs. It is more a matter of noise in the information flow. Creating uncertainty and fluctuations, forever obstructing clarity.
I don't think I've ever read such long-winded pomposity that was so inefficient.
Stop counting your words. Make your words count.
Favorite scene. Much as I love Arnie . . . . every scene with Valeria (Sandahl Bergman) in that amazon outfit/war paint/chopping guards down.
She went from playing one of the dancing "muses" in XANADU with Olivia Newton John to this.
Valeria... the Queen of Thieves. one of the Most Badass Chicks in cinema history.

“I think it’s just hand-to-hand fighting.”
“Oh, they’re not using their cocks?”
You guys! 😂
What about a guy who bit Ahnold? That was quite a dick move)
This was filmed in the Almeria area of southern Spain, which has been a popular moviemaking location for decades because of the unique terrain. Sergio Leone and other Italian directors shot their spaghetti westerns there. Other famous films shot there include Lawrence of Arabia and Patton.
Also the tank chase in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Conan the Almerian
This version has a few bits of added footage from the original release. For one, after the battle in the ruins, the princess never appears on screen again. It's just assumed she gets taken back to her father.
Also, the last line of narration at the end was "but that is another story", rather than "that story shall also be told" ; as a nod to the old custom that storytellers were paid "by the story", so a crafty storyteller would always leave his audience wanting more, and willing to pay.
There is a deleted scene where the kings guard kill the king shortly after sending Conan and his crew to save his daughter.
This is the international cut which is the superior version of the film

This was Arnold Schwarzenegger's first film after retiring from bodybuilding. His previous films were made while he still competed for the Mr. Olympia. All three Conan films were adapted from the Robert E. Howard novels. The actor playing the Wizard, Mako, is arguably best known for his voice role in Samurai Jack. Director John Millius followed this up with Red Dawn instead of Conan the Destroyer
_The actor playing the Wizard, Mako, is arguably best known for his voice role in Samurai Jack._
Probably not, given the popularity of Avatar: The Last Airbender. He nevertheless made a great shapeshifting master of darkness.
I thought hercules in new york which came out in 1970 was his first film as he was in five films before conan which came out in 1982.
@@jayceboy Hercules in New York came out in 1970, the same year Arnold won his first Mr. Olympia title. Pumping Iron was filmed in 1975, the same year Arnold won his sixth Mr. Olympia title, but was released in 1977. His other notable films before Conan the Barbarian were Stay Hungry and The Villain
Not true...his first film was "Hercules in New York." All of his dialogue was dubbed.
@@michaelshea8086 I suggest you reread my initial comment. I said this was his first film after he retired from bodybuilding. I'm also aware that the initial release of Hercules in New York had him dubbed over and that his name was written as Arnold Strong
Conan's dad was played by William Smith. And you're right. He really was a bad ass in real life.
He was the dude who fought Clint Eastwood
One of my favorite scenes has always been near the end when James Earl Jones goes into Darth Vader mode while addressing Conan as 'my son'.
Conan....I'm your father!
Just proof that James Earl Jones is everybody's daddy.
Sandahl Bergman started out as a dancer. Bob Fosse put her in A Chorus Line, All That Jazz and Xanadu. She was in a lot of dance films, but got her boost in Conan. She later appeared as the villain "evil queen" in "Red Sonya" another film based on a character by Robert E. Howard. On television she was one of the Golddigger dancers in the Dean Martin show from 1970-73.
Basil Poledouris! 😎🤘🎶
Seriously one of the best movie scores ever. One of the few I purchased! It builds such a mood.
William Smith, Conan’s father, was the Spetznas colonel in Red Dawn and appeared in Any Which Way You Can with Clint Eastwood.
With that face was he the last guy Eastwood fought for the big prize? Looked it up , sure enough Will Smith. lol
William Smith is fluent in Russian and is a very smart guy.
You should read the background on Red Sonjia how they tricked Arnold in being in so much of the movie.
signed up for a glorified cameo as a favor to producer Dino De Laurentiis. Much to his surprise, he was on the set for four weeks, three weeks longer than expected. He discovered after watching a rough cut of the movie that his role had been expanded to co-star, thanks to crafty angles and multiple cameras
Most actors would loved to be "tricked" in that manner because it works in their favor.

It's called the wheel of pain and it was supposed to be a mill of Crush grain and make flour
YES!!! 💪😎💪Great movie! I used to watch it all the time on VHS!! Valeria was a true ride or die!
Basil Poledouris's soundtrack is FANTASTIC in this! He also did Red Dawn, Robocop, and Red October!!
And Starship Troopers.
Valeria ohhhh. wowie!
This musical score in this movie is one of my favorite ones ever.
The impersonation is spot on! lol
Arnold's grunts and groans makes every movie a comedy. My bucket list includes being present during one his ADR sessions.
I was told the wheel Conan tolled on was called ‘the breaker of will,’ and that’s it’s there to kill the weak and strengthen the strong of will. It also ties into the ending where Conan realises flesh and steel are not as strong as will. Also Valeria is the greatest female warrior in any movie made ever period. She promised to come back for him and she did, she returned as a battle angel and saved Conan’s life, greatest women ever and greatest representation of female warrior.
My vote is Sybil Danning in battle beyond the stars
The sword and its forging is a metaphor for life. The sword is made by ore drawn from the earth and then fire and air and quenching in water to temper it into steel. Life is Crom's anvil, the struggles and hardships are the forces used to temper the heart and soul. All you can trust is the temper of your heart and soul, no one else's.
If I remember right, the origin story in this show is not what Howard had in mind. Conan was raised in a harsh land and climbed many rocks and mountains and fought many primitive barbarians, he wasnt kidnapped and essentially trained as a gladiator. Conan became a thief in his travels, eventually a pirate and raider but mostly by himself seeking money he fought many mythical monsters and armies.
Yes, I get the Bruce Wayne vibe during that opening now all these years later.
"For us, there is no spring. Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm." - Conan
I've always loved that line. It sticks out to me more compared to the other quotes of being the strongest or most brutal.
Robert E. Howard was a brilliant writer. More people today should read his works.
Deleted scene. Subotai is not dubbed either, it's Gerry's actual voice.
Conan's father was a blacksmith.
At the end against Tulsa Doom, Conan should have repeatedly stated: "I am Conan the Cimmarian. You killed my father, prepare to die!"
Creation of Robert E. Howard. As well as Soloman Kaine. Good reads, highly recommended.
Definitely highly recommended
Tragically he died at the age of 30. There's a really nice biographic movie called The Whole Wide World that's worth watching with Vincent D'Onofrio and Renee Zellweger.
Mr. Movie nailin’ Arnold’s impression is wild. 😂
I love the original Conan stories! Robert E. Howard is a legend.
Trivial facts. The lamentation of the women bit was a quote from Genghis Khan. He was held captive for a time after his tribe was wiped out and his father, the chief, was killed. One of the Golden Khan's two greatest generals was named Subotai..
I watched this movie in 1982, I was 12, still a top movie for me. I've memorized the lines and have annoyed everyone for decades.
This movie truly is terrific. It's a near perfect masterpiece.
This was one of the first of the epic theme music style. We take it for granted now. But this one showed how its done and then got imitated by everyone else after.
When Conan is asked what is best in life and his answer "to crush your enemies and see them driven before you and hear the lamentations of the women." Is an actual quote from genghis khan.
That guy that looked funny in the beginning breathing heavy the scout is none other than Franco Columbu Arnold Schwarzenegger's friend and former Mr Olympia as well.
Franco was just a beast. Rip.
@@mrjdgibbs Franco and Lou ferrigno both competed in the inaugural world's strongest man competition.
Franco had a disgusting injury that took him out of the competition trying to carry a refrigerator on his back.
He had a compound fracture of one of his legs. 😱
Hyperboria...and Cimmeria was one region, the one where Conan was born. Cimmeria was north of Aquilonia and Nemedia the two primary kingdoms of the north. North of Cimmeria was Vanaheim and Asgard. The northern barbarian lands. (You visited them in the game, dude!)
Hyboria is the World of Conan. Hyperboria is a region to the NorthEast of Cimmeria. I was trying to give her a reference she would understand, which is why I said Northern Europe. Technically Cimmeria is under the sea now between the United Kingdom and Norway.
Apparently Kull the Conqueror was supposedly mean to be the third Conan film but got rewritten to Kull.
Red Sonja, (1985) ❤❤❤
He did "Pumping Iron" and "Hercules in New York" before this breakout role.
You guys are going to love this movie and the soundtrack is top notch.
Doom's two henchmen were played by Ben Davidson (the tall one) who was a professional football player for the Oakland Raiders and the Green Bay Packers and Sven-Ole Thorsen, a body builder that Schwarzenegger knows...he's had bit parts in practically every one of Arnold's movies. He's also done stunt work in dozens of action movies.
Thorsen is the guardsman Conan has the sword fight with in Conan the Destroyer.
they look like members of Motörhead or Manowar. Ratt? child, please.
The composer also did Quigley Down Under, The Hunt for Red October, and won an Emmy for Lonesome Dove. The brilliant Basil Poledouris.
1. Conan's mom was a serious hottie!😍😜
2. The first woman he encounters was a harpy.
3. Filmed primarily in Spain.

This legendary character has been around for over 90 years.
From pulp magazines to a series of novels and long running comics by Marvel & Dark Horse.
Conan did indeed embody the Barbarian archetype in sagas of sword and sorcery, such as Dungeons & Dragons, Sega's Golden Axe series, etc.
This was only Arnold's 6th film and also his breakthrough role.
The first time that Arnold was really, truly acting with both dialogue and action in one unique vessel.
When I reading the Marvel comics of Conan from various eras and all I could see and hear was Arnold.
The 1983 sequel, "The Destroyer" was like a RPG come to life and just as good.
Arnold was going to become Conan for a 3rd time (2000-2010s) and it was shelved.
Btw, you should check out Bridgette Nelsen's film debut (pre-Rocky IV), Red Sonja (1985), Another character by Robert E Howard and known as the "She-Devil with A Sword".
Conan & Red Sonja both existed in the same universe.
In that movie, Arnold has top billing and he's not Conan.

I really dislike it. If I remember correctly, the studo butchered it why is why it ended up being PG instead of R. Arnold was not happy with it at all
I love the inside joke of the virginity of this cute teenage girl (Olivia D'Abo) being "guarded" by Wilt Chamberlain. They might as well have Ron Jeremy and John Holmes guarding her virginity.
2:26 - the way anti-aging science is progressing, Arnold might act in more Conan movies when he was in his prime.
48:30 - BARBARIANS? - The term "barbarian" was used by ancient Greek and Roman people to refer to those who did not speak their languages; it originally referred to stammering and stuttering. Because the ancient Greek and Roman people viewed themselves as superior and civilized and others as not, "barbarian" also had a negative connotation. 'Citizens were recognied by their clean-shavedness. Barbarian' was a term to describe a non-citizen or unshaven. The occupational term 'barber' is associated, and 'barbe is the french word for'beard'.
Hands up if we all said “Stick around” at the same time. 🖐️
Arnold's Mr. Movies impersonation is spot on.
Did Mrs. Movies just realize how great his Arnold grunts are? 😆
The witch does say, 'There is a price, barbarian'. But otherwise, yes, the identity is mostly implied by the contrasts with 'civilisation'.
The King's Daughters played by French actress Valerie Quennessen she was also in the movie Summer Lovers 1980 with Daryl Hannah

RIP Mako, most know him from Uncle Iroh in Avatar or Aku fro samurai jack, but this is where me and a lot of other fans met that incredible man as a great and powerful wizard!
Actually, most of us know him from all the movies and TV shows he did in the 1960s-1970s.

@JnEricsonx If you're not into survival it's probably not for you.
I don't play much of anything, but it was free on PS one month and I got hooked. It's very demanding of time.
It is very much tied to both these movies and the lore of the books. It uses this theme music and you can get armor & decorations from this movie.

Age of Conan was an awesome game...til you started trying to get Tier 3 gear... Toth Amon's Castle raid, seven sequential battles and you needed dozens of committed players WHO KNEW THE STRATS to get through each one. And each one might require a different mix of types. And some class armor would only drop (and randomly!) in some of the battles...even ones where the group didn't need more than 1 of the class that could only get their armor in that battle. And the last battle where you had to deal with monsters, Toth Amon and the Giant Ape...where if ONE guy jumped into the pink mist too soon, half the group died. And the fight was on a freaking timer! The next DLC had Tier 4 gear on 6 man missions (they were hard but doable.) Tier 3 was where the community hit the wall and dozens or hundreds of players just disappeared. Sad...cause I really loved that game.
There's definitely truth in what you say about Tier 3 taking a toll on the playerbase, but if you were in a guild that had those committed players, it could be a really fun dungeon.
@@carthedge7736 The tough part was getting enough players in the right classes to show up at a specific time. You could stand around for an hour and actually be in the raid and then someone's friend would show up at the last minute and you got kicked if you weren't in a guild. Some guilds had armor drop lists where if you were a lone pickup and one piece of armor dropped in one of the battles, their guild member automatically got it. There was one battle where Assassin daggers dropped...I got sidelined like three times when they passed out the loot. They would beg you to join the zerg and then after you helped get 2/3rds of the way through the dungeon an officer in the primary guild would casually mention "Oh, guild members get primary right to armor drops." There were some guilds where they used a random die generator to assign loot. It was a catch as catch can issue. Toughest part for me personally...playing a Priest of Mithra in the last fight where you could randomly get pulled up onto a balcony and had to drop a mob in a certain time period or you got switched to the bad guy side...your own raid had to kill you then rez you. You HAD to know the strats.
Mrs. Movies, I believe you are referring to the show Lost Girl. And the actress in that show would have been a VERY young child when this came out. Remember this was WAY back in 1980-something and lost Girl was in the early 2000's. How could she be in her mid 20's to early 30's in this AND Conan which are 20 years apart??. But she played the character of Dr. Lauren. Bo's (the main character) love interest. She was also in another Canadian Show: Dark Matter, as an Android.
You are correct!!!
Definitely the best film of this genre. It took itself seriously. There were few jokes. The closest modern revenge epic of this caliber is The Northman, but this was filmed as a long music video.
I think at the end, Doom’s children were supposed to set the world afire, attack their own families and communities. The baddie was supposed to be Charles Manson character leading an army of brainwashed hippies. It made sense in the early 80s.
Nah, the best come back is "My god breaks wind... therefore he's better than yours!" 😂 I love dad jokes!
I believe this was Arnold's 2nd movie, his first being "Hercules in New York", which was what got him the casting for Conan.
"Nothing in life can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. But this......this you can trust."
Arnold was in The Long Goodbye (1973) as an unnamed hoodlum, Stay Hungry (1976) in a supporting role, Scavenger Hunt (1979) in a bit part and in The Villain (1979), a live-action Roadrunner-style movie with Ann Margaret and Kirk Douglas. He was also in a couple TV series and movies, like The Jayne Mansfield Story (1980) as Jayne's husband Mickey Hargitay. And, of course, Pumping Iron (1977).
@flatebo1 Oh shit! I've got a watch list for this weekend! Out of those, the only one I've seen was Pumping Iron, because my health teacher in high school was Mike Katz.
What I’ve learned from playing Conan:Exiles the wheel of pain is used to break a man and turn them into a thrall(slave)to become your follower🤷♂️
Is that game worth a damn?
@@JnEricsonx it’s a grind but it’s always updating with new content so it’s def worth a try if you like survival games!!
all of my thralls were scantily clad women. it was cool.
My favorite part:
Subotai- "I am Subotai - thief and archer. I am Hyrkanian, of the great order of Krelath."
Conan- "So what are you doing here?"
Subotai- [Holds up chains] "Dinner for wolves." [They both laugh]
As it had been written in the Scrolls of Skelos, to enter into close combat with Conan was to invite certain death.
Love the setup you guys did. Truly epic!
No way you played AOC! Loved that game.
Great movie. I seriously wish they would find a way to complete the trilogy and do King Conan already, even if its in animated form with Arnold voicing Conan.
Thats a bang on Arnold impression 👍
I’m guessing the Mrs. was thinking of Zoie Palmer when she was trying to identify Sandahl Bergman. She starred in “Lost Girl”, the “Canadian succubus show”. I can definitely see the resemblance.
3:41 Yep, definitely Nietzsche. I memorized that phrase decades ago for... reasons.
"Was mich nicht zerstört, machen zie mich stärker."
What doesn't destroy me, makes me stronger.
Except losing your arms and legs. That doesn't make you stronger. Unless you are the Black knight.
@@JayMH409 Yeah, Nietzsche had some profound insights and he was nuttier than a squirrel's cheeks.
Such is life.
I do hope you both watched Conan The Barbarian: The Musical after this.
“That looks like it hurts!” “Stick around”. Lol
Sandahl Bergman was one of the lead dancers in "All That Jazz".
Also, the "witch" did refer to Conan as a "Barbarian"..."What is you seek? There is a price, Barbarian."
R.I.P. Akira Toriyama! thank you for your life`s work!
