Hmm, I tried mounting my PC into the rafters in the garage, and to be honest I found the wires just got even more in the way. Maybe I just wasn't used to it.
yeah you need something that will pull any slack up and out of the way. my pc is on the floor the wires go up and tacked onto the top of my tv. i placed the dog lead in the centre of the vr space, then tacked the wires to it. this does waste some cable length. if you had a bigger room you might need to buy longer cables
you could use like one of those key chains if you wanted it to look pretty. maybe a ceiling rail too. theres a vid somewhere of a guy that did a way better job than me but he used 3d printer for all the clips and rails and bought longer cables. he used 2 dog leads to run up the extra cable slack.

No Reflective bits? good to know. also, the rug is a great idea, I'm thinking when I set things up ill get a fairly flat gym mat, Thanks for the help and advice
Really disappointed about having to take down mirrors and pictures. My wife is a deco freak and there are so many things on the walls...It's going to be hard enough to convince her to let me bring my gaming PC into the living room(only room big enough).
That was probably the most bullshit part of the video. VR headsets don't use LED sensors, they use Infrared light. Reflective surfaces aren't going to mess with anything.
Yeah it doesn't actually affect anything unless you are using the new htc vive 2.0 lighthouses which in that case they can be thrown of by reflective surfaces
In the future i'd like to see ceiling representations in the boundaries in VR. Also maybe the ability to add objects into the boundaries, so your ceiling fan can actually be visualized even if it was just a simple box. Many people have more than just a simple plain box room to play VR in, and the addition of this will really help.
I totally agree that they need to add a ceiling boundry however I don't think there's a need to add custom objects simply because you should either move the stuff out of the way or make your boundry smaller
He is using something like this www.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System-144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1513185438&sr=1-2&keywords=Quick+Support+Rod
In the first day I almost shattered my bookshelf with glass doors, hit my foot on the couch wooden structure and almost stepped on my cat. Moved the play area a bit, the cat will have to learn to stay away when I play but everythjng else sorted out xD
Those tension rods are genius, I was going to buy a light stand. I ordered 4, I'm going to use two for light houses and two for my large green screen. Update: Tension rods have replaced all my tripods now. I had tripods for studio lights and now I just use tension rods for those also. Just buy what are called super clamps and you can get a studio light end that screws into them. If there is a bundle deal of them I'd consider going that route if you stream and leave things up permanently. I have 6 now and I would have saved a bit had I gone with a 6 or even 8 pack to begin with.
lol .. I agree, I think after watching your review, I am definitely getting the VIVE rather than Rift.. you'r absolutely right regarding "valuing my time".. I already got the PSVR for my ps4 as an entry level VR..But tbh I might wait till next year to see if there is a new version of, or even VIVE 2 hopefully! I am really looking forwards to the new controllers (if they ever decide to release them at some point).. besides hopefully next year I will be moving to a bigger house ;)
Whaaaaaaaaaaat??!!? Jesus, its like its made for hobbits, lol! Here in Sugar Land most of our ceilings are 10' high in any home made in the last 20 years or so, and often in the living room the 1.5 story house is popular, where half of the home has double height that goes all the way up to the ceiling of the second floor's ceiling, which comes out to about 22' or so, and the great room, dining room, dining nook, and kitchen are all one big area. We call that "open concept" which is the most popular, so there's really no such thing as a small room. The smallest I have, which is considered quite compact is 13x11' with a closet and shared bathroom since its just a guest bedroom. O_O My big issue is that I'm trying to use what is my "dining area" in my open concept as a VR zone, but the smallest I can make it with available wall-space is 7 meters diagonal and the HTC Vive is complaining, but still seems to work OK despite its warning protest. *shrugs*
You really do need a room designated for VR. Crucial to have zero glare and least amount of obstructions for space and deflection. I tried it in similar living room. The tracking was never right. I went from the Oculus, Mixed Reality, HTC Vive, and the Index. Ended up ridding of VR. Awesome exp but hassle with out a proper space.
I'm moving in a couple days and my room has a pretty low ceiling, I can touch the ceiling by extending my arm like 3/4 of what I can reach to, it's only gonna get worse too cause I'm supposed to be 6'1 or taller and I'm 5'10 right now😭😭😭
im using a WMR headset so i dont need to worry about cameras or a perfect square or reflections. my VR room is awful though because its a small bed room. i keep hitting my window (luckily its a category 5 hurricane rated window so its difficult to break it) my play space is literally an L shape
Mine is a small rectangle, currently working on making everything small and compact, legit thinking of doing what the Japanese do in their Tatami rooms.
quick tip: anyone playing vr already on a carpet, u can get hard and flexible materials to act as the rug in this video. I have a rubbery floorboard protector for office chairs that works perfectly and is super cheap.
My vr space is pretty good except for a very low ceiling, I've gotten used to it, but when I first started using the vive I actually punched my ceiling within 20 minutes.
Lol the light bulb thing almost looked so deliberate. But I get that feeling. I tried drawing in VRchat with a pen and shoved my hand into the spinning blades of my ceiling fan. It hair line fractured my pinky. I'm sure I looked dumb just punching my hand straight into the fan.
Ooo. I never thought about reflection off the TV causing tracking issues. Now some of my issues kinda make sense, I thought perhaps it was the way I was standing
I have a den where I keep my workout equipment but it quite large and an open middle area to play. And thankfully im short so the ceiling fan is not even an issue
I would add that you can increase your space by quite a bit if you move any obstacles to the same sides/corners of the room as other obstacles. If you have furniture (or similar) in opposite corners of the room, you severely shrink your play area.
Too expensive and not really viable yet. The big kickstarters I knew of pulled out of the home market entirely and concentrate now on arcades, probably because they realised their product cost too much.
I've seen a simpler "treadmill" that has a smooth floor you wear socks on, a belt holds you in place and your feet just slide so you feel like you're walking.
I'm glad the place i live has super high ceilings for some reason, especially since I'm 6'4. I couldn't touch the roof even if I jumped, not as lucky with the horizontal space though.
That's a good point, but that would involve a lot more work than just changing a light fixture. Also, the rest of our is covered in downlights, and we're constantly changing bulbs, or they flicker because they need new transformers, or... eugh. Hate them.
It was recommended by the manual not to have the IR not further than 5 meters from each other. Is it the wide angle that makes yours look further apart from each other or did you put them further away from each other than the 5 meter and it's working well?
Might be the camera - the playspace is 3x4m, so the basestations are pretty much 5m away from each other. You can use the sync cable to push that further though.
oh... that's how you can do bigger rooms. I thought it was only for troubleshooting solution. Thnx. My walls are all shiny acrylic, I'm glad it still works. I'm not sure if it's my body blocking the view or if it's the walls. Rarely it is a bit next to me, after a few swings the controllerhand is next to me again
i use my sync myself , my ceilings are 10 feet and i have my lighthouses 16 feet apart , i thing that's like 4 ish meters apart. no issues thus far and i directly mounted them to the ceiling.
My lighthouses are 6.7 meters apart and it works fine most of the time... I do use the sync cable but it worked without it also. I have two vices and we play in the same room, with just two light houses
My pc is in my room and I can’t move it downstairs because I also use it for homework and my room is packed. I have a quest so most of the time I go downstairs but I prefer pcvr games
this is really helpfull. i will remember this video when i'm gonna move in the future so i will be able to creat a better VR room then what i have right now
The second room is my setup. Sucks, but that's what I have. I've hit my fingers and controllers so many times and it's painful. Even drew blood a couple times.
I was playing on my oculus once and for some reason decided to do it roght next to my dads 3000$ lg tv and i inevitibly hit it yet somehow the screen didnt even break
i despise when my cables are behind me but i manage it without anything else special just the oculus box but its a little hard to get plenty of space without going on my wires
The only thing you missing is Vr cable management system. Maybe you don't need that but this is very good thing and I gives you more immersion as no cable is on your back or your foot. Get that one from KIWI system.
They're overrated in my opinion. You can't turn around without hitting the cable if you do that, which is more immersion breaking for me than having to avoid stepping on a cable.
I don't know how to make my playspace bigger, I'm only allowed to play inside my rectangular shaped bedroom but the longest sides are occupied by my bed and the table with gaming PC. I literally can't move my feet any inches further or I'll end up smashing the wall or the wardrobe
"take down reflective surfaces" ... or get an inside out tracking system, which from all accounts (including my own personal experience), has better tracking in the first place
The downstairs living room? Hah, I agree, absolutely hideous wallpaper. But throwing away furniture because the colours don't match, or tearing down wallpaper because you don't like it, is entirely non-sustainable. We change things when they break.
Step 1 have a big room i suppose. Got that but then, the floor is way too cluttered with crap for me to move around myself. I suppose i cannot hit anything on the floor really hard so i don't really mind that. Playing super hot is pretty bad tho
the main problem is finding an outlet to plug in the wire connectors for the base. It's not like I can just take a random wall outlet and move it where I want to move it.
The idea to use tension rods is something I haven't seen before - I've ordered some straight away! When you're in rented accommodation, its even harder to justify drilling into the wall
Be sure not to overextend them - it's very easy to accdientally push your ceiling up! They don't need to withstand human levels of yanking on them, just enough to not fall over .
@@MakeUseOf I decided to give the other kind of tension rods a go - the ones people use to hang lightweight curtains or netting between the window recess - so I shouldn't have to worry about putting a hole in the ceiling :D
I am planning on buying an htc vive and setting it up in my veranda where there are windows all around me. Will that work or do I really need to find another place to set it up?
Oculus will only work in bright rooms as it needs to see the surrounding; Index/Vive can work in the dark if you want, but doesn't mind room lighting. Neither will work in bright sunlight. It's really just reflective surfaces you need to look out for!
Nah man, sorry... no 3D printer, toys, fireplaces, metal rads, hanging lights, or furniture in a VR room. The PC should be in the next room over and cabled through the wall. You should also consider a ceiling mount for VR cable to get it away from feet if you are not going wireless. Step up your game.
I have a tv protector. Controller protective guards which are amasing. A mat in the middle of the room. Steams app turn signal to show the centre of the room, where the ceiling is and to stop your cable tangling up and locomotive vr for walking without moving by using your arms walking motion to navigate. I know there is a piece of software in production that uses you joging on the spot to move around called RIP (run in posistion) and is downloaded with a lil help from google.
I always wondered where those tracking mistakes came from when I got near the glass closet or the TV. Thank you. But I can't remove the ventilator on the ceiling :( it is a sturdy one but I hit it every time I try to shoot those barnacles. That's really inconvenient :/
Is this some new software I've not heard of it? It's not possible AFAIK to recreate objects in your VR home environment yet, Steam or Oculus (though Oculus has been teased it before, so I assume it's a thing in the next year or so).
MakeUseOf I saw a video of a guy recreating his entire bedroom in VR to prove that you don’t need a massive space for VR (Obviously) I can’t remember what he used, but it had all sorts of rooms, furniture etc and you can use it to build either your real room or a dream house or something. I say try to look up the video, but then again I don’t remember the title
I want to mount a tv in my Vr room so people in the room can watch what I’m doing but like you said it’s not a great idea, any other way for me to do it?
I mean, depends on how big your room is really. If you can use the sofa to split off one half, such that it's VR playspace, sofa, then TV on the far end, that would work. I just wouldn't risk a TV anywhere in the actual playspace, or near the boundaries of it. Otherwise, put them in a different room and cast to it. Steam Link lets you view remotely: www.theverge.com/2019/4/3/18286931/steam-games-stream-how-to-valve-link-anywhere-in-home-streaming . Or Quest 2 you can cast to a suitable Chromecast device or the Oculus app.
So my room is way to small for my htc vive and my gaming desktop is in my room. With out moving my gaming desktop to the basement (which is right out side of my room) is it possible to still play my vr in the basement? Is there a longer wire I can buy??
It's possible, but may involve going through multiple cables trying to find one that works: www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4eiqda/10ft_extension_cables_after_the_breakout_box/ Essentially, you're right on the edge of what works and doesn't. Moving your PC would absolutely be the better choice!
‘As VR hits the mainstream, I am one step closer to finding a girl friend that I don’t need to pay for’ Hahahahahahahaha Is this guy for real, dedicated room!!! lol
lmao your "bad room" is basically my whole setup

the best thing i did was putting a retractable dog lead on the ceiling and hook the cables up to it. no more tangling wires

Tension rods are an interesting concept. Might try that myself since I was thinking of getting tripods and didn’t consider the stability factor.
Thank you for the great video on VR setup. I am getting a RUG! That was the best tip :)
Tension rods are a great idea!
I use mic stands, they easily extend past 6 feet and are a lot easier to transport and move if I need to move my pc downstairs for example.

Good point. Vive is a lot easier since the basestations only need power, but you'll definitely need USB extenders and cable runs for Oculus.
i despise when my cables are behind me but i manage it without anything else special just the oculus box
but its a little hard to get plenty of space without going on my wires
Thanks for this video. I needed a quick overview like this
Directions unclear accidently put a hole in the wall.
Directions clear patched the hole in the wall.
Ugh I'm gonna have to setup my old monitor and old keyboard onto the downstairs and whej I wannanplay vr ill just go down and bring my gaming pc
Best room set up I have seen is Garage with Oculus Quest 2. You park you cars outside and You do not need much else to do. DoNe.
I want a garage sized space
The only thing you missing is Vr cable management system. Maybe you don't need that but this is very good thing and I gives you more immersion as no cable is on your back or your foot. Get that one from KIWI system.
They're overrated in my opinion. You can't turn around without hitting the cable if you do that, which is more immersion breaking for me than having to avoid stepping on a cable.
Oooh!!! reflection VR jumping hack! #LOL
hehe, that second room is me.....
Imagine if they were your grand parents
I don't know how to make my playspace bigger, I'm only allowed to play inside my rectangular shaped bedroom but the longest sides are occupied by my bed and the table with gaming PC. I literally can't move my feet any inches further or I'll end up smashing the wall or the wardrobe
Wait until you're older and get your own place I'm afraid. Don't worry, there'll be even more awesome headsets by then!
all the ceilings in my house are still touchable when standing so i guess i cant really avoid that.
jesus... you live in a hobbit house or what?
"take down reflective surfaces"
... or get an inside out tracking system, which from all accounts (including my own personal experience), has better tracking in the first place
Technically, the Lighthouse system is inside-out, but that's beside the point. Both have their pros and cons.
i would redo the hole room . The wall paper looks bad and wow you have lots of different colored chouchs and chairs . get open the space up man
The downstairs living room? Hah, I agree, absolutely hideous wallpaper. But throwing away furniture because the colours don't match, or tearing down wallpaper because you don't like it, is entirely non-sustainable. We change things when they break.
Or just buy a Quest and play in your backyard.
Step 1 have a big room i suppose. Got that but then, the floor is way too cluttered with crap for me to move around myself. I suppose i cannot hit anything on the floor really hard so i don't really mind that. Playing super hot is pretty bad tho
Have you considered investing in some storage furniture!?
I can’t even stick my arms out fully with Pugh going through my area
Those tension rods are an interesting idea.
Good luck finding a room that size with a UK new build house good tips cheers thankyou
Dude. Never mind the sun burning your hmd. That wallpaper burned out my retinas. 😂 nice informative vid. Thanks.
It is quite horrendous. Haven't had time to redecorate yet!
MakeUseOf I feel your pain. So far it's taken me about 18 months to do the hallway. 😂
Very useful thank you 👏👏
the main problem is finding an outlet to plug in the wire connectors for the base. It's not like I can just take a random wall outlet and move it where I want to move it.
Extension cables for power are easy though - USB, not so easy.
Hmm, not sure I'd trust a $100 basestation to those flimsy things though...
want tips: just recreate your own room but then better and futuristic
Wow, this is so helpful. THANK YOU!
i have big mirror in my room and index dont like it xd
I tought you were a furry?
Error inscript bruh
Lol
uwu
MinishLIVE OwO?
noooooooooooo....
....maybe
i recommend a vr treadmill if you are out of budget, i dont hv one but i think it will surely help
I mean, if you have $100k to drop on one, sure, why not?
I am planning on buying an htc vive and setting it up in my veranda where there are windows all around me. Will that work or do I really need to find another place to set it up?
This guy wants to have you biuld a new home for vr lol I've done vr 3 sensor setup in 10 x8 room no problem
I am getting a oculus quest
I was wondering if it was ok to use vr in a bright room like light from the ceiling from light bulbs
Oculus will only work in bright rooms as it needs to see the surrounding; Index/Vive can work in the dark if you want, but doesn't mind room lighting. Neither will work in bright sunlight. It's really just reflective surfaces you need to look out for!
I love this guy, he looks and sounds like a fat Jeff Kaplan.
Nah man, sorry... no 3D printer, toys, fireplaces, metal rads, hanging lights, or furniture in a VR room. The PC should be in the next room over and cabled through the wall. You should also consider a ceiling mount for VR cable to get it away from feet if you are not going wireless. Step up your game.
no, ceiling mounted wires are horrid. Tried them, just got caught up with flailing arms. Mostly use Vive now that I got the wireless upgrade.
@@MakeUseOf Did you use one of the multiple pulley setups to control the slack?
@@D00D735 Not at home, no, but I've tried them elsewhere.
Very nice video, congrats.
what about wallpapers and posters? do those confuse the system the same way glass and mirrors do?
Not in my experience, no. I suppose ultra-refective foil wallpaper and that sort of thing could in theory, but normal posters and wallpapers wouldn't.
I always wondered where those tracking mistakes came from when I got near the glass closet or the TV. Thank you. But I can't remove the ventilator on the ceiling :( it is a sturdy one but I hit it every time I try to shoot those barnacles. That's really inconvenient :/
Wow I learned so much from this video.
What if I go to VRoom and recreate my whole bedroom inside VR?? That way ill know where everything is in VR
Is this some new software I've not heard of it? It's not possible AFAIK to recreate objects in your VR home environment yet, Steam or Oculus (though Oculus has been teased it before, so I assume it's a thing in the next year or so).
MakeUseOf I saw a video of a guy recreating his entire bedroom in VR to prove that you don’t need a massive space for VR (Obviously)
I can’t remember what he used, but it had all sorts of rooms, furniture etc and you can use it to build either your real room or a dream house or something.
I say try to look up the video, but then again I don’t remember the title
I think his yt name is ‘LeadHead’
How tall are you?
185cm.
@@MakeUseOf thank you 🙏🏻
Wait that’s your wife? I think you mean sister cause there’s no way that’s your wife
Bwahaha. It's ok man, you'll find someone too one day!
So my room is way to small for my htc vive and my gaming desktop is in my room. With out moving my gaming desktop to the basement (which is right out side of my room) is it possible to still play my vr in the basement? Is there a longer wire I can buy??
It's possible, but may involve going through multiple cables trying to find one that works: www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4eiqda/10ft_extension_cables_after_the_breakout_box/
Essentially, you're right on the edge of what works and doesn't. Moving your PC would absolutely be the better choice!
That's a rare and very informative video
‘As VR hits the mainstream, I am one step closer to finding a girl friend that I don’t need to pay for’ Hahahahahahahaha
Is this guy for real, dedicated room!!! lol
Bruv my bed is so freaking big, i dont even have like a meter between my setup and my bed. So yeah this is crap
Take the bed frame away and sleep on a futon - either roll it up in the daytime, or stand on it to play!
@@MakeUseOf :O, thanks for the tip :D
This video went over everything I could think of.
my ceiling is way to high up ngl
You should add some sound isolation foam padding to the walls, so if you still run into the wall you won't get a broken wrist or wall.
I like the idea, I just wonder how I'd explain having a room with padded walls!
