My favorite Ian McDiarmid story is one he told about Christopher Lee. Christopher Lee was another older, classically trained British thespian. One whom Ian thought he'd found a contemporary in. Ian Mcdiarmid and Hayden Christiansen were both AMAZING actors and were the absolute highlights of the prequels. They don't get anywhere near the credit they deserve.
@@jacktheflash8478 I think he was more saying how in the prequels the actors had a large amount of influence over their roles, vs the sequel series which seems to have the actors on rails.
George actually wanted Sidious to be Anakin's real father he wrote it into one of the early drafts of the scripts I for one am glad he decided to scrap the idea.
donaldthescottishtwin (DTST) In the former expanded universe, now known as the Legends continuity, Sidious and Plageuis did in fact accidentally create Anakin out of the force. So there's that.
When the Star Wars movies were made with true and real passion. With good and bads, the 1-6 episodes really felt truly great and fulfilling when watching.
I think that's what draws people in. There are Cheesy moments, there are bad moments, a few plot holes and wrong dialogue choices but... you can tell it had heart. It had passion behind it. It had people that really cared and were invested
Watching Episode 3 now and thanks to the wonderful performances of Ian, Ewan, Hayden, and co., this is definitely the best of the Prequel Trilogy movies! 👍👏
Clorox Bleach But remember that with rating system from 0 to 100 movies that get 10/10 might only get 99/100. So in practice it is harder to get 100/100 than 10/10.
Dang I don't know why people disrespect Hayden, I thought he was great, an when he talks in these videos he sounds smarter than Einstein, honestly who would've thought. I respect him
@Eddie Venkman Well, you have to consider that Vader is an almost completely different person. Anakin didn't have to be majestic and imposing only because Vader is. On the contrary, it makes sense that Vader literally is everything that Anakin was not. This said I'm not denying the bad writing issues of the Prequels, and the fact that Christensen is not exactly Anthony Hopkins, but there is at least something good about his casting.
I loved Hayden. Even when I was young o recognized the annoying parts of his role were just how he was written. I saw Jumper just because of him. That movie was deplorable but he was still the best part of that film as well. Hayden is fantastic. People just have no insight.
The problem is that the dialog and direction in “Clones” are so sloppy that Christensen ends up looking terrible. But he’s really pretty good in “Sith”.
What I always admired about Sidious was what a master in social interaction he was. He created a full alternate persona, projecting it to the public in order to gain power, and deceived everyone up until it was too late for anyone to stop him. Truly, this kind of villain is very interesting to see; the evil genius, whose downfall is caused by their own hubris.
+Willy bob Ian played Paplatine in the original version of Return Of The Jedi. In the original version of The Empire Strikes Back, Palpatine was played by an old woman that had chimp eyes superimposed over her own and was voiced by Clive Revill.
They are every bit as good as the original trilogy! I personally like them a bit better, although I grew up with episodes 4-6, and saw them in theater.
George NAILED it! To me, Palpatine is the greatest villain of all time. The depths to his manipulation of the Jedi Order and the Clones to increase the despair, anger, and hate in the galaxy to feed the power of the Sith is astounding. Truly magnificent character and an amazing actor who plays him.
This might be considered controversial, but I really think Ian McDiarmid deserved a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for this performance. He makes the movie. He has to be perfectly manipulative with Anakin, so that you will believe Anakin would trust him, but then he has to sell the cackling force of evil as the Emperor. He does extremely subtle and extremely over-the-top in the same character and he doesn't miss a beat. That opera scene alone is the kind of thing that wins Oscars. I think it must be the internet stigma around these movies that kept him out of any big awards, because this performance is seriously the best McDiarmid has ever done.
By fanboy I'm sure you're trying to imply that I have an irrational favoritism of the OT, but yes I do hold ep 4-6 in much higher regard than ep 1-3, as it should be.
While i dislike Christianson's acting (Though i blame dialogue among other things) I definitely agree the opera scene in episode 3 was one of the strongest scenes in all three of the prequels. Also loved the amount of lore with darth plagueis
Argel Tal There is a difference between agreeing with an opinion, and repeating an opinion word for word that is so personal that it is highly unlikely that you had the same. ;)
TitanFind yeah usually I’d go to Sam Jackson but if you actually watch his performance it’s very spaced out, theatre training as taught by British academies is very disciplined - doesn’t matter if you’re on stage/set for a pay check, you never let on
Palpatine is such a cool character. He’s a guy who was completely corrupted by power. He represent a kind of evil that is very present in real life imo
+Witold Witkowski Initially Anakin was meant to be there watching the battle. In the final version of the film it is changed but if you look close enough in some shots, you can see that Palpatine is actually wielding Anakin's lightsaber.
I love Sidious. He used his enemies to prop him up as Emperor. Conquered the Galaxy with nothing but guile and deception, and yes, a pair of brass balls.
Well, and the Trade Federation, Techno Union, the Geonosians, the IntergalacticBanking Clan, the Commerce Guild, the Corporate Alliance, Hyper-Communications Cartel, their droid armies, two Sith Lords, a clone army made from the deadliest bounty hunter of the galaxy, half the senate on his payroll and a cursed Gungan forced to lead the Chosen One into his hands and the Galactic Republic into ruin...
Such a gentle and soft spoken man in real life yet he can transform into the epitome of evil in an instant. That takes real talent. His portrayal of Palpatine in The rise of Skywalker is possibly his best yet. Genuinely frightening & chilling.
The fight scene between Palpatine and Windu was greatly enhanced by Samuel L. Jackson who managed to convey to us the incredible force of Palpatine. You really do believe that Windu has met his match! In fact, even know I believe that Palpatine allowed Windu to disarm him in order to corrupt Anakin. Palpatine played the victim and Anakin took the bait, hook, line and sinker.
I keep waiting for Ian to do a quick impression of the emperor in these interviews but he never does it. Just wanting to hear that gruff & gravelly voice he does when he's in character as the emperor. That is THE quintessential bad guy of all time...
tachikoma747 Pointless to praise something and fail to give an example of why you are critical of something. You need to learn to be clear about what you are saying. The prequel trilogy movies all were good films.
I still remember being SHOCKED that people were ACTUALLY surprised that Palpatine turned out to be the Emperor. Did anyone else see it coming from Episode I??
In the trailer, the narrator says that there is a sith apprentice and a master, and whenever he says master, palpatine is shown. Also he looked exactly the same
I DID! I saw it in 1999 - though I admit it wasn't until the final shots that I got it. But a lot of people didn't know. George made it seem he hired "two" actors - Ian didn't even know he was Palps. He thought they made a mistake - true story. Also George does some interesting thing with how Palps is lighted to deceive people Is Phantom Menace The Greatest Film? I accidentally spoiled it for my sister. As a reader of the books I'd heard The Emperor referred to as Emperor Palpatine for years before the prequels came out and accidentally assumed it was common knowledge and mentioned it in front of her.
I loved the fight between Windu and Palpatine; it's the only one that got me on the edge of the seat. All the others were so "clean", orchestrated, constructed and without eny emotion... but the emperor was so delightfully evil he seemd to get off in his pants as he stabbed the poor jedi bastards XD
Gotta love Ian. Especially that one little scene where he's just sitting there looking at himself all made up in the mirror, and he just says with a small smile "What kept you?"
You know it was a bad idea to have the Emperor swordfight if Ian McDarmid first says "I feel I know the character" and then says "I didn't know he could use a lightsaber".
Advancedgod It was cool to see him saber battle, but let's be real, he had no business in a direct conflict like that. Same with Yoda. Both characters seem way too skilled in the Force to be sword fighting and George Lucas should've left it that way.
a quote from the plagueis novels and is not his, but plagueis himself in reference to the sith "we have long surpassed the need for the lightsaber, but we practice even if just to mock the jedi" and sidious very much carried that to his heart, in the revenge of the sith novel his saber had dust, he hadn't practiced with that thing in decades

Him, John Williams, and Ewan McGregor carried the prequels in my eyes.
Ershiin You see far in it.
Ershiin No that was Jar Jar! just kidding
Ershiin Had no problem with the prequels.
Ian Mcdiarmid and Hayden Christiansen were both AMAZING actors and were the absolute highlights of the prequels. They don't get anywhere near the credit they deserve.
The scene where he uses force lightning on Windu must have looked hilarious :D
Critical Ravi 4:03 hilarious
Little known fact: Samuel L. Jackson wasn't acting. George literally pumped him with 700kV of electricity then cut his arm off. Method acting!
Mace windu survived and went to earth for hiding. Sometime later he joined shield and met a cat
@@Friedbeanbag Before that he became Richmond Valentine.
You lack of faith disturbs me.
"You can make many choices. Of course not one that interfers with continuity"
Disney Saga: Wait, what?
Didn’t the prequels contradict the EU?
@@jacktheflash8478 I think he was more saying how in the prequels the actors had a large amount of influence over their roles, vs the sequel series which seems to have the actors on rails.
@@jacktheflash8478 how?
@@jacktheflash8478 EU wasn't canon. And EU didn't describe their era.
He was more talking about shot continuity, I think.

“Takes us back to the old return of the Jedi days” LOVE THAT!!😂😂
Ian is a fantastic actor, one of the best things about the prequels.
7 thru 9 were trash
Jeanne Ramirez agreed
@@lukewebb604 Even though I disagree with it, I can understand all your complaints, but plot-holes? How?
@@VinVonVoom There are few, but most (if not all of them) were later fixed in EU
Seeing Ian talk in his normal voice while in the makeup and robes is hilarious
4:26 "now they can probably dew it in their sleep."
...Just the way he killed plagueis in his sleep
Ironic.
It's terrifying how good Sidious is at manipulating others as Palpatine, and it's all thanks to Ian's amazing acting.
Watching Episode 3 now and thanks to the wonderful performances of Ian, Ewan, Hayden, and co., this is definitely the best of the Prequel Trilogy movies! 👍👏
Millennium Falcon i agree
Not really sure if he deserves 5 stars. Or 10/10. Maybe 100/100 is best.
Best villain ever.
TheRomanRuler 10/10 is the same thing as 100/100...

Clorox Bleach But remember that with rating system from 0 to 100 movies that get 10/10 might only get 99/100. So in practice it is harder to get 100/100 than 10/10.

“Star Wars Episode III: Becoming Senate Webisode”
Dang I don't know why people disrespect Hayden, I thought he was great, an when he talks in these videos he sounds smarter than Einstein, honestly who would've thought. I respect him
It wasn't his fault that he was such an awful character, no one can survive George Lucas's bad dialogue.
@Tom Caine to be fair, pun so intended, Vader wasn't all that level headed in OT
Palpatine is the best villain EVER!!!!
I second that.
i Third that!
All who oppose will pay for their lack of vision. Only at the end will you understand.
then they will feel the full power of the Darkside!
Jonathan Herman In the movies, he remains a mystery, but you learn a lot about him in the EU.
Ian Is such an underrated actor. This man will forever be a legend.
did Ian play in the return of the jedi?
+Daniel Godfrey Yes, Ian was the Emperor in Return Of The Jedi.
+Willy bob Ian played Paplatine in the original version of Return Of The Jedi. In the original version of The Empire Strikes Back, Palpatine was played by an old woman that had chimp eyes superimposed over her own and was voiced by Clive Revill.
Yeah, and it's really fortunate that he was playing much older than he was in Jedi... or if Lucas cast a young guy on purpose, what a brilliant move.
Jeff K how exactly is that fortunate? he should in theory be older in return of the jedi right?
It's fortunate because it means he was still alive to play that character in the prequels 20 years later.
best part of the movie, his speech to the senate
Darth Sidious I am The Senate
You mean there's a scene where he speaks to a mirror? I had missed that.
Not yet
I love the prequels. They are great
They are every bit as good as the original trilogy! I personally like them a bit better, although I grew up with episodes 4-6, and saw them in theater.
I love how Ian just is in a room, smiling to himself and saying 'what kept you' like the evil genius Palps is. Guess that's method acting for you
such an underrated character
Underrated? By whom? Not by fans for sure.
THE DARK TIME WATCHER underrated....ummmm what? Huh?
Underrated by whom????
I allways thought he was more powerfull than darth Vader even before the prequels.
UNDERRATED
UNDERRFUCKINGRATED
WELL FUCK YOU MAN
George NAILED it! To me, Palpatine is the greatest villain of all time. The depths to his manipulation of the Jedi Order and the Clones to increase the despair, anger, and hate in the galaxy to feed the power of the Sith is astounding. Truly magnificent character and an amazing actor who plays him.
If anything. He was absolutely amazing in the prequels I loved every moment of Palpatine on screen.
He sounds a little like his character in real life!
It's called a voice... he doesn't talk any differently either way
Wow who would of thought
Almost like it’s his voice
Mostly, but not entirely
Yeah, that happens
Ian McDiarmid is just an awesome actor all the way around. Much respect for him.
"While Palpatine isn't (we must asume) Anakin's natural father in this film" So he knows Palpatine is the creator of Anakin, cool.
It’s believed Darth Plagueis created Anakin.
@@nikolairostov3326 its also implied that palpatine created anakin
I created Anakin…from a foul fart
@TheDestroyer2alltrolls Good scenes are usually turned into memes. It's because they're memorable.
Oh, he was completely screwed over.
Nothing controversial detected.
I know he’s pure evil but Palpatine is so much fun to watch.
I love the pre-quels

By fanboy I'm sure you're trying to imply that I have an irrational favoritism of the OT, but yes I do hold ep 4-6 in much higher regard than ep 1-3, as it should be.
While i dislike Christianson's acting (Though i blame dialogue among other things) I definitely agree the opera scene in episode 3 was one of the strongest scenes in all three of the prequels. Also loved the amount of lore with darth plagueis
+Argel Tal Oh look, a Nostalgia Critic fanboy.
Chris Purolover really? where?
Argel Tal Right there *points at you* Great job repeating what he said.
Chris Purolover I do try my best at agreeing with points i find captivating
Argel Tal There is a difference between agreeing with an opinion, and repeating an opinion word for word that is so personal that it is highly unlikely that you had the same. ;)
Leave it to the two British guys, McDiarmid and McGregor, to make the prequels watchable. Plus he seems like a gentleman and really nice guy.
Don't forget Christopher Lee as Dooku
Yeah, I suppose there was no stand-out American actor (or performance, at least) in the prequels. In the OT the real MVP actor was Harrison Ford.
TitanFind yeah usually I’d go to Sam Jackson but if you actually watch his performance it’s very spaced out, theatre training as taught by British academies is very disciplined - doesn’t matter if you’re on stage/set for a pay check, you never let on
TitanFind I liked Sam Jackson, he did act very well.
@The Flying Dutchman Scotland has been independent for a while. So no Ewan is a Scott.
Palpatine is such a cool character. He’s a guy who was completely corrupted by power. He represent a kind of evil that is very present in real life imo
He wasn't corrupted by anything, he was born pure evil. He killed his entire family when he was young for no apparent reason.
*Darth Sidious: Goooood* *POWER!! UNLIMITED POWER!!!!!!!!*
He was the perfect person for that role by far!

C CURTIS oh
For Star Wars to have two iconic villains is amazing
"We. Shall. Have... Peece."
Goosebumps.
Palpatine played the victim and Anakin took the bait, hook, line and sinker.
absolutely
Makes you want to cry knowing that we’ll never have anything like this again. Kills me.

I keep waiting for Ian to do a quick impression of the emperor in these interviews but he never does it. Just wanting to hear that gruff & gravelly voice he does when he's in character as the emperor. That is THE quintessential bad guy of all time...
Mike Hawk You can see him do that in few occasions! Look for his Star Wars celebrations' interviews!
I loved that they brought him back from Return of the Jedi to reprise his role again. One of the few redeeming aspects of the prequel.
Deathcoldan that's kinda rude, don't you think?

tachikoma747 Pointless to praise something and fail to give an example of why you are critical of something. You need to learn to be clear about what you are saying. The prequel trilogy movies all were good films.
What a powerful wave of nostalgia.
A journey back to the days when "Star Wars" was good...
Also George does some interesting thing with how Palps is lighted to deceive people

Some fun theories out there tho
Like I remember one that Palpatine was actually possessed by Sidious and that’s why his voice goes weird in Rots
I accidentally spoiled it for my sister. As a reader of the books I'd heard The Emperor referred to as Emperor Palpatine for years before the prequels came out and accidentally assumed it was common knowledge and mentioned it in front of her.
Considering they cast the same actor it was pretty damn obvious
Palpatine really is that one character that all fans love unconditionally. Not really much of a surprise Disney want him back.
His pantaloons
so Anakin vs Obi Wan was not emotional?
Obi-Wan vs. Anakin and Yoda vs. Sidious were definitely emotional
Paul Mares The Internet is not the place to be talking filthy.
It was a dreadful fight. Awful chereography and so, so disappointing.
Ian McDiarmid a true thorough actor in every essence. No one can copy this man in this role sheer excellence!!
Oh Mr. McDiarmid, you didn't get anything wrong.
White Knight 5 But what if two same-level force users fight?
eerypoet4 arc5555 That makes for a better fight scene rather than one low level Jedi/Sith getting annihilated by a far more powerful opponent.
I read somewhere that sidious says "I no longer need a lightsaber, but I keep using it just as an insult to the jedi"
a quote from the plagueis novels and is not his, but plagueis himself in reference to the sith
"we have long surpassed the need for the lightsaber, but we practice even if just to mock the jedi"
and sidious very much carried that to his heart, in the revenge of the sith novel his saber had dust, he hadn't practiced with that thing in decades
His facial expressions while dueling with mace windu gets me every time 😂💀
why? because you don’t understand them?
