I'd like to try and clear something up. A lot of people keep commenting that General Grievous first appeared in the 2003 2D animated Clone Wars series from Cartoon Network so therefore, he must have been designed for that show first before appearing in Episode III which was released in 2005. Pre-production work for Episode III began just a few days after the May 16, 2002 release of Episode II. One first things that usually happens in pre-production is the art department designing different characters, ships, locations etc. with the director, in this case George Lucas, giving rough ideas to the concept artists and then working with them and fleshing out the different designs, as can be seen in this video. Warren Fu created this particular concept art for Grievous (later being used as Grievous' Magna Guards) 3.bp.blogspot.com/-kqATh3VMHe8/UvT0ozdE__I/AAAAAAAAj-s/4EdETNE4J2A/s1600/MagnaGuard_bts.jpg which can be seen in this video at 4:10 and is dated the 14th of November 2002 (as seen in the jpg). In this video it states that one week after showing George their initial designs, Warren Fu submitted the concept art for Grievous that George approved. I can't find a copy of that exact design but this one external-preview.redd.it/DjlgVJYnidQrlCPzNY6SIp0hcKvSEl489lMEBUA0-MU.jpg?auto=webp&s=5c4b685ef4f771adda395d324f3e5b048781b57c is dated the 6th of December 2002. Season One of the 2D animated Clone Wars series first aired on the 7th of November 2003. Season Two first aired on the 26th of March 2004 with General Grievous first appearing in Season Two, Chapter 20 which aired on the 8th of April 2004. I can't find a definitive date that Clone Wars started pre-production, but there is at least eleven months between the concept art dates mentioned above and the release of season one of Clone Wars and around fifteen months between the release of Season Two leaving plenty of time for Grievous to be fully fleshed out for Episode III then being redesigned to fit in with the artwork of Clone Wars. Thus, Grievous was designed for Episode III well before appearing in the 2D animated Clone Wars.
Well they kinda fucked Grevious all together in canon but in legends he was a scary ass mf, handling multiple jedi masters, loud foot steps to signify impending doom the whole badass villain aesthetic. Then, he already has an idea of what he's been looking for but he still does not know exactly what it is and as soon as he finds it ... everything comes alive. The people who do not appreciate the prequels do not have IDEA of the luck that we have that they exist, at the level of performance they may not be perfect, but ... GOD! How much imagination is there. My respects for Lucas and his team back then.
When I saw Grievous back in the 2003 Cartoon Network clone wars series, I thought he was the biggest, the baddest, and the best creation ever. He slaughtered 4 Jedi in one episode and that was unheard of to me. One of the jedi he bested (not killed) being Ki-Adi Mundi one of my favorite Jedi. And I thought he was a droid with lightsabers and it was awesome. But as his story got bigger and better it became known that he was more than just a simple droid. Grievous is by far my all time favorite creation during the prequels.
I love the fact that even with The Force there was Jedi who could not defeat General Grievous. Thus The Force is not entirely what dictates in a lightsaber dual all the way.
He used to not be a droid but like cadet was servilely injured in battle and all that was left were his internal organs, his brain and pieces of his face. The rest was replaced with his droid body.
The Cambot but he looks cool he acts cool and in the clone wars he has more development and he does have character you know he wants to kill the Jedi and that he has a long lasting feud with obi wan you can tell that just by episode 3 people who say he doesn’t have a character are high
The Cambot Ok one you may not think he’s cool looking but 99.99% of Star Wars fans think he looks very cool why do you think he was so heavily petitioned for battlefront 2 and I will say one thing I think his comic book origins should be put in cannon I do like it and it would give him depth and yes he does have development in the clone wars and the comics especially when you see his cave and I quite like his feud with obi wan it’s fun to watch and he has a certain charm to his character sometimes like when he was talking to ventures in the attack on Kamino episode
The Cambot wdym I said it should be in cannon because it would add to his character it would change his motivations well how it started his motivations I think he does have a character and wdym the CGI still holds up today I still see people complementing his CGI in comments
The kid in the floating chair might be ridiculus, but the electronic panels on his chair actually made it into the movie as the controlling circles of Grievous' Wheel Bike 👍
The Prequels had an insane amount of pre production. Not only did the three year gap between movies work for pacing the story out, but it allowed the team to really explore a lot of the ideas of how they wanted to do things.
The sequels were like when car companies took stuff like the VW Bug and the Ford Thunderbird and said: “let’s just update a familiar design.” Nothing really “evolved” beyond the original trilogy, they just “adapted.”
@nikolai 1939 No, I can actually enjoy things instead of making every single thing into another "REEEE, SEQUELS BAD" even if it has zero to do with the sequels like this video.
@nikolai 1939 They suck like the prequel movies but this has nothing to do with the sequels. My point is that people can't go three seconds without whining about the sequel trilogy even in videos that has literally nothing to do with the sequel trilogy. It's just whiny like Anakin.
Wow. To think Grevious could've been a number of different things. I'm glad he turned out the way he did though, fits perfectly. Thanks George Lucas and the art department.
Me too. Actually, I think this is the majority opinion - even if it just isn't on twitter/forums/online. Just about everyone I know IRL feels the same. Star Wars just isn't Star Wars without Lucas. Just like, IMO, Star Trek hasn't been Star Trek without Roddenberry!
@@TheDylandProductions I don't think it's the majority opinion. I think most of the people don't feel anything negative about Disney running star wars.
I think the designs for Tiplee and Tiplar were developed during episode 2 when they were thinking of making a female Sith, and I’m pretty sure Asajj Ventress also came from that idea.
I always respected George for giving the designers so much freedom with creating everything for SW. He even kept a lot of designs he liked but didn't put in the movie in case he had a chance to use them at a later date
a) It's hard to match Tartakovski's level of greatness. One does not simply outdo Dexter's Lab lol b) Windu wounded Grievous at the end of the series, leading him to be weaker in Episode III.
Grevious was such an awesome character that was wasted. In the original clone wars animated series he was a force to be reckoned with and Jedi feared him. In the movie he was barely in it, and they don't even explain that he met up with Mace Windu and he crushed his organs to give him that cough.
+Keyblader001 Yeah they made grievous look like nothing more than a cowardly little bitch in Episode 3. Even though he has an insanely bad ass background story.
+Keyblader001 I know RIGHT!!!! WHEN I WAS A KID AND I SAW THE CLONE WARS ON CARTOON NETWORK I WAS CRAPPING MY PANTS!!! OH MY GOSH KI ADI MUNDI (who I loved playing with in battlefront 2) is about to DIE!!!! NO WAY!!!!!
+theblazer Wow... Nothing makes me happier than when someone who insults someone else is wrong. :) Check your facts, buddy. Star Wars: Clone Wars came out before Star Wars Episode III. You're confusing the 2D series with the 3D series. SW:CW bridged the gap between AOTC and ROTS. It came out in 2003 and ended in 2005 and ROTS was released in May 2005. :)
Yes, they were initially designs for Grievous but ended up being used as the Magna Guards instead. A lot of concept art for characters, locations etc. that didn't make it into any of the movies were reused elsewhere, especially in the Clone Wars TV series.
+mranderson00001 Yeah, like the Turbo Tank designs from the original trilogy, which were dusted off, and re-purposed as the Clonetrooper's war weaponry on Kashyyk.
The prequels are in many ways underappreciated. Sure Jar Jar was a fucking disaster and there were some awful dialogues. But the entire Culture and History of Star Wars was extremely magnified. Without the prequels we wouldn't know shit about the Republic and the Jedi. I love all 7 Star Wars films.
Totally agree. I hope after the next two movies they do a remake of the three prequels. Just without Jar Jar (If he isn't Plaguis) and it should start where episode 2 started and have the second remake be all about the clone wars and jedi
Айя Элиас yea, I think grievous was portrayed correctly. Great addition to the movie along the story. His character made a good enough impression for us to remember but I think nobody cared for his death the other villains did
I was always REALLy attracted to the clones. I think their armour, their design, everything is perfect. But no attention was never paid to them, not even their own 5 min webisode :( at least in The Clone Wars cartoonjs George finally realised these guys could make for some amazing emotional and badass moments. A clone of one man., 3 million times, yet every one of them was different...
I think the concept art at 5:16 would've been a better look in the films. If he was entirely hidden in a cloak except for that creepy head it would've been a cool reveal for him to sweep aside his cloak for a fight with Obi-wan and reveal some freakish mangled body part-alien and part-droid with four arms all wielding sabers.
+Ben Zombie Not too sure if I agree. If his body was entirely covered, 1) he wouldnt have been able to kneel when talking to Sidious, 2)when he breaks the glass and launches himself into space, an overcoat wouldn't have let him do that, and 3) it would have interfered with his menacing hunched over walk. Also his body being completely covered would've been way too close to him looking like Vader or any other Sith lord for that matter. And he's just a general. I think the simple cape suits him perfectly. :)
I disagree. People like that badass 2003 version of Grievous, but to me his expressiveness & really well animated body are what makes the character so good.
This kind of commitment and love is what is sorely lacking from Disney Star Wars you can see these people genuinely care about Star Wars and the story in stark contrast to Disney who only care about making money
Yes, because this wasn't made to sell toys AT ALL. Nope, those millions of merchandising don't exist, this was a passion project! You do realize the sequels are also made by people who are most likely passionate about working on Star Wars because they grew up with it. Both prequels and sequels were made to make money, and both had people who are passionate about making things, quit your bias, both trilogies are still garbage.
I think he was referring to stylistically. All villains in the series up 'til that point, aside from the morally ambiguous Fetts, wore dark cloaks or dark armor. Darth Vader was known as 'more machine than man' since 1977 - and although for the final prequel Lucas wanted something to mimic that same idea/concept, he didn't want an outright Vader clone. In the Expanded Universe (and I presume the Disney canon too) the elements of Darth Vader's suit (all of them - mask included) were common medical parts used throughout the galaxy for heavy injuries. Lucas very well could have copped out and made up some plot about Grievous utilizing the same armor - and Anakin eventually inheriting it or something. But I, for one, am glad he didn't. Instead, we got a really great, new, villain design. I also really like how, up til this point, all droids were some variation of tan/brown or silver/blue. The clones were the only troopers wearing white. (And both sides often had symbolic bright colorings too - to signify rank) Grievous was cold and ruthless - and sported an interweaving of metal and white plating. Really stark looking compared to the other droids. Especially with his blood red cape too! Loved Grievous in the 2D Clone Wars series. And he turned out decently in the film too. (Although certainly more toned down/underpowered) I think it was genius for Lucas to have this mostly droid general foreshadow Anakin's fall - while wearing ying/yang opposite colors too! :D
I have a mixed opinion on the Star Wars Prequels, I don't think their utterly bad, but I don't consider them as great as the Original Trilogy. I have to give it to the art department though, they put in a lot of work and effort into it. :)
The writing in all three kinda sucked. Strange and unnatural dialog, some disconnected plot lines etc. What I think George should have done is what he did here! Hired talented people and just sort of pointed out the general idea of what he wanted. Some kind of conflict, embargo on a planetary level. And they come up with a more logical embargo like Cuba missile crises in space or something. I want something dark, but still human interaction. And a writer writes Sopranos level quality dialog and so on... Afterwards George would just have had to pick what he liked. Instead he seems to be a little stubborn and surrounded by sycophants not really telling him what did and didnt work on the stuff he made because he was the boss.
skekSo the Emperor I think it honestly depends on how you look at Star Wars, as a movie or as a story. The movies don't really stand well on their own but all the media combined into the greater story makes me enjoy each film much more
Could only imagine the feeling he got when the man himself chose his idea. And to be able to brag after and say hey u know general grievous ya I did that lol
This type of creativity and passion is exactly what was missing from the Sequels! It’s clear George should have come up with the story and character designs for the sequels. The only thing he shouldn’t have touched is the dialogue.
Part of me wants to see the 'child in a floating chair guarded by two droids' concept realized in Star Wars. For one, it'd be funny. And two, it'd be fun to see an old concept brought to fruition
I enjoy the fact it isn't confirmed by Lucas in this about those "two doids" with the staffs there being general grievous... but ended up keeping the exact designs as the guards and special soldiers of the general known as the magnaguards. But props to the guy who drew a droid shaped like a human skeleton, that had a literal human heart and human like eyes despite having a completely robotic body. Insane design. Probably one of the best character designs. Like hate for the prequels aside. I loved them a lot, watched all the stars wars in order rather in time of release as kid. If your new to the series you have to watch 1-6 as is, not new hope to jedi and than prequels. But the design for darth maul, unique but was later given one of the deepest most human like personalities of any character. Count dooku, sported a very similar look and attitude as well personality to a jedi, which he once was, turned and trained by the dark side. Grievous though, brilliant, didn't need a major back story or any personality. Just the fact he was a skeleton like being, resembled death, his only objective was murder jedi. Took their lightsabers as trophies. Wielded lightsabers of dead jedi and talked like a true bad guy, but spoke like a human and even coughed and breathed like he was constantly dying. Well, he did have organs. But all that made his character even more unique. Probably my favorite bad guy other than darth vader (both anakin and lord vader).
Seeing this makes me overjoyed to see hard working artist getting recognition for their triumphs in movies. I can’t say I’ve felt this in the recent Star Wars trilogy but I would like to see their art department behind the scenes work
I like that Lucas apparently had no input or instruction creatively. He just said “I want the Emperor to have another sidekick in this movie, but I have no idea what he’ll look like, so go make a bunch of different designs and I’ll just choose one, I guess”.
Thats got to be an amazing feeling, finishing a drawing at the last minute, the director not only picks it but knows instantly that's the character, and you've ended up creating one of the coolest villains in the SW canon. Imagine walking through a department store and seeing your character on T-shirts and action figures.
My favorite character in all of the Star Wars universe!! It's a shame he wasn't used to his full potentially on the big screen but at least he is in the comics, and animated shows. Best Jedi slayer ever! Not a Sith and no force powers and still kicksass!
I love watching concept artists and particularly character designers work. One day I want to be in one of those studios taking part in a process like that. One day.
Definitely could see some of the designs did not go to waste, and became the Magna Guards. And it looks like one of them became Trench, seen in The Clone Wars. So all isn't lost.
The one thing about Grievous that disappoints me is how they weaken him every new appearance. In the Clone Wars miniseries he was just pure badass, in the movie he was noticeably weaker but he still had some skill, but in the 2008 Clone Wars he was just pathetic. The guy who could take on 5-6 Jedi Masters at once was now barely holding his own against a padawan.
This is my ideal job. Studying as a 3D animator at the moment, so i have to do a lot of concept art for that and it's good fun watching your drawings come to life. Here's hoping I end up i this line of work!
I watched this behind the scenes series two years ago during the first weeks of my school exchange year. I had ups and downs and my emotions ranged from sad to happy. Now I am rewatching it for the third time and everytime I hear the intro from ROTS Webisodes I get flashbacks and relive feelings of moments I had already forgotten. Everytime I hear that intromusic I get chills. All in all watching BTS of the Prequels and ROTS in particular is almost better than watching the movies themselves. Thanks for uploading!
My dream job. To be surrounded by an ensemble of various artists who dedicated their lives to their craft and channeling all their energy for a creative purpose. So rewarding.
not only can they just "draw" but to have such an imagination and creative will that you pursue inspiration through poses in a mirror or looking at inanimate objects everywhere you go, even the bathroom. to then get rejected and start all over again, but with such pleasure in the process you happily do it again and again sounds like the dream job.

Grievous is by far my all time favorite creation during the prequels.
I love the fact that even with The Force there was Jedi who could not defeat General Grievous. Thus The Force is not entirely what dictates in a lightsaber dual all the way.
Joe Balaich Stupeed Jedi.
He used to not be a droid but like cadet was servilely injured in battle and all that was left were his internal organs, his brain and pieces of his face. The rest was replaced with his droid body.
Andrew Vasirov morally imbalanced ambiguous and yet kind to help Jedi :P
JoeC7711 I know. Count Dooku caused him to be injuried. I just enjoy his concept because he in a way is a foreshadowing of Darth Vader.
Still a more developed villain than Supreme Leader Snoke.
I mean,at least he did have some 20 minutes apperence on clone Wars 2003...so...i guess he have more build up than snoke.
The Cambot he does have personality and his motives are vague doesn’t mean he has no character
The kid in the floating chair might be ridiculus, but the electronic panels on his chair actually made it into the movie as the controlling circles of Grievous' Wheel Bike 👍
Prequels: has a team of artists working for weeks to design one character
Sequels: Ctrl C + Ctrl V
The Prequels had an insane amount of pre production. Not only did the three year gap between movies work for pacing the story out, but it allowed the team to really explore a lot of the ideas of how they wanted to do things.
The sequels were like when car companies took stuff like the VW Bug and the Ford Thunderbird and said: “let’s just update a familiar design.”
Nothing really “evolved” beyond the original trilogy, they just “adapted.”
Do you always feel the need to whine about things instead of shutting up and enjoying the things you like?
@nikolai 1939 No, I can actually enjoy things instead of making every single thing into another "REEEE, SEQUELS BAD" even if it has zero to do with the sequels like this video.
@nikolai 1939 They suck like the prequel movies but this has nothing to do with the sequels.
My point is that people can't go three seconds without whining about the sequel trilogy even in videos that has literally nothing to do with the sequel trilogy.
It's just whiny like Anakin.
Congrats to Warren for creating such a legendary character
and congrats to you for the Fishmans profile pic! Excellent taste all around 😎
I like how the MagnaGuards were almost at their final version in just the first pitch.
Wow. To think Grevious could've been a number of different things. I'm glad he turned out the way he did though, fits perfectly. Thanks George Lucas and the art department.
Literally a last minute design, and such a great one
That would never happen in Hollywood today and that pains me
Thanks dude for creating my favorite star wars charachter
I like grevious too
He is the best 👍🤔
Mine too
George created Grievous, and approved of the guy who gave him his face.
Please George...COME BACK, We need you...Star Wars needs you!!
Retro Yisus I don't think it would be a good idea after he ruined the original trilogy(episodes 4-6) with the special edition changes.
Uh yea more memes
Just let Star Wars die. 1977 - 1983 RIP.
D Fens prequels are better than original trilogy.
@@spenser9908 *2005
These Star Wars webisodes are cool as shit I can’t stop watching them all
I miss George Lucas and what Lucasfilm used to be.
Yeah, these films were made with more passion and originality in them.
@@TheDylandProductions I don't think it's the majority opinion. I think most of the people don't feel anything negative about Disney running star wars.
@Luca Pontrelli yes?
One good thing from Disney owning lucasfilm was kylo ren💯💯
so these concepts eventually became Magna Gaurds, Jedi twins Tiplee and Tiplar and Admiral Trench
Scott Kiley yee.. oh boy Trench was awesome and scary af ^^
The spider that just wont die...
@@fortherepublic1263 He finally did.
Which concept art is Trench?
I think the designs for Tiplee and Tiplar were developed during episode 2 when they were thinking of making a female Sith, and I’m pretty sure Asajj Ventress also came from that idea.
A LOT of passion, love, and work went into these prequels. Shame that they have this stigma.
I always respected George for giving the designers so much freedom with creating everything for SW. He even kept a lot of designs he liked but didn't put in the movie in case he had a chance to use them at a later date
I only wish they would have made the General as badass as he was in the Clone Wars cartoon for the episode III.
MegaKaiser45 *Hello there*
a) It's hard to match Tartakovski's level of greatness. One does not simply outdo Dexter's Lab lol
b) Windu wounded Grievous at the end of the series, leading him to be weaker in Episode III.
He was badass but Obi-Wan is better
Francesco Brosolo which is why obi wan almost got killed and needed the help of a blaster
CandyEye The same way Grievous needed the help of four lightsabers and an energy-spear? Xd
The final design of grievous was actually awesome. And the cgi quality on his close up is amazing.
NO WAY!!!!!
+Keyblader001 Dumbass, the film was made before the series..
***** The movie was MADE first, the series was RELEASED first. Learn the difference.
4:10 did they take These concepts for the magna guards?
Yes, they were initially designs for Grievous but ended up being used as the Magna Guards instead. A lot of concept art for characters, locations etc. that didn't make it into any of the movies were reused elsewhere, especially in the Clone Wars TV series.
i thought they were spelled "mana guards"
ZeusPvP They were originally. Their staff's energy is made from magic. Get it? Mana?
Seriously tho I thought that too.
lol
+mranderson00001
Yeah, like the Turbo Tank designs from the original trilogy, which were dusted off, and re-purposed as the Clonetrooper's war weaponry on Kashyyk.
I like you.
Totally agree. I hope after the next two movies they do a remake of the three prequels. Just without Jar Jar (If he isn't Plaguis) and it should start where episode 2 started and have the second remake be all about the clone wars and jedi
Episode 7 was a major blunder imo. Nothing as lore-destroying as a copy-pasted fully predictable story with the shittiest Mary Sue for a hero (Rey)
On the internet, we have a word for that train of thought.
We call it: fanfiction.
Finally someone who speaks a neat truth.
Last minute and got the perfect character! I couldn’t imagine grievous looking any different
That spray bottle design that one artist came up with reminds me of Bionicles.
So I am the one here who finds Grievous very likeable and is pleased by his appearance in Ep.3. Okay.
Naw grevious is fine
Айя Элиас yea, I think grievous was portrayed correctly. Great addition to the movie along the story. His character made a good enough impression for us to remember but I think nobody cared for his death the other villains did
Me too.
i think that was the point, he was a villain that was a threat to winning the clone wars but he wasn't apart of the siths plan to rule the galaxy
Айя Элиас When I was 10, Grievous was my favourite character
I was always REALLy attracted to the clones. I think their armour, their design, everything is perfect. But no attention was never paid to them, not even their own 5 min webisode :( at least in The Clone Wars cartoonjs George finally realised these guys could make for some amazing emotional and badass moments. A clone of one man., 3 million times, yet every one of them was different...
that was amazing how they were all still individuals.
Anthony Quigley which clones you like best. Ep 2,3 or original trilogy
George wasn't in charge of the clone wars.
I love that they caught on video the exact moment when he's looking at that spray bottle and goes "huh... This could work"
That's so cool. I mean how are you the guy who just created General Grevious?
"Grievous is an alien in a droid shell, which is an echo of what Anakin will become".
Holy sh*t George was operating on levels sooo deep
“When I was in bathroom...” Rian Johnson must have watched this and taken similar inspirational approach for The Last Jedi.
Omg ahahahhahahahahaha
One of the better comments I have seen in recent memory.
this comment has to be taken up to the top
General Grevious has an awesome design now. He looks horrifying.
That's what they did in the 2003 cartoon
I disagree. People like that badass 2003 version of Grievous, but to me his expressiveness & really well animated body are what makes the character so good.
those artist have some really creative minds! incredible
Febrievous, a fine addition to your everyday cleaning supply collection.
El Rowlight I’m sorry both trilogies are not garbage that’s your opinion one I happen to strongly disagree with
The artists are amazing.
Imagine having an art department that you could give directions to and then pick and choose the ideas you like, so cool.
Lucas: dont create Vader
Designers: creates Vader
Lucas: this is what we need!
He meant dont create Vader visually
Mackenzie Coombe yes exactly, George wanted grievous to mirror Vader in concept, not in design
@@TheDylandProductions yeah but the first one he says he likes in this at the top right literally looks like vader unmasked at the end of rotj lol
Could you imagine being in the room attempting to make the main bad guy of Episode 3? That would be a dream
***** dude dooku taught him todo stuff like that b4 u bash grievous and lucas way of doing it look at the vid were dooku trains him it xplains all
skekSo the Emperor I think it honestly depends on how you look at Star Wars, as a movie or as a story. The movies don't really stand well on their own but all the media combined into the greater story makes me enjoy each film much more
As George said (I'm paraphrasing), I'm more of a visual storyteller. The story rests on the visuals, not the dialogue.
Did anyone else find it fully that George stamped his approval in Jar Jars voice? "I LIKE THEESSA ONE, AND THEESSA ONE!"
I thought Lucas sounded a bit weird there.
He had bronchites during the making of Episode III
@@pikppa Heesa not feelin so good
Very cool to see how Star Wars isn't just solely from George. It's the sum of many, many talented people working together.
Unfortunately for the prequels, one of those people was not Marcia Lucas. Her editing would have brought much more humanity to the characters.
Could only imagine the feeling he got when the man himself chose his idea. And to be able to brag after and say hey u know general grievous ya I did that lol
Grevious is such a great design!!! Love the character!
This type of creativity and passion is exactly what was missing from the Sequels! It’s clear George should have come up with the story and character designs for the sequels. The only thing he shouldn’t have touched is the dialogue.
It would be terrifying to have George himself judge your hours of hard work
Something about an artist staring very seriously and enthusiastically at a spray bottle is hilarious
Part of me wants to see the 'child in a floating chair guarded by two droids' concept realized in Star Wars. For one, it'd be funny. And two, it'd be fun to see an old concept brought to fruition
After Grogu i can see that happening, maybe in an old republic story
I can’t say I’ve felt this in the recent Star Wars trilogy but I would like to see their art department behind the scenes work
General Grevious is my fav Star Wars Character.
I like that Lucas apparently had no input or instruction creatively. He just said “I want the Emperor to have another sidekick in this movie, but I have no idea what he’ll look like, so go make a bunch of different designs and I’ll just choose one, I guess”.
I mean, he is a filmaker, not a designer. If you know what's best for you you let the creative team be creative.
Is it he had too much input or not enough? You haters can never get your story straight.
3:47
„The ultimate scary guy, a kid? Is somebody a parent?“ xD
I used to binge the hell out of these back in the day.
3:50 “don’t recreate earth Vader” well that’s exactly what trash Disney pretty much did.
hah
*Darth Vader, and he said it well before your time stamp.
in all fairness to those movies, that was the point. the character is aware of that
@@groovyraffraff5300 yep
And resurrected palpatine..🙄🙄
I can't get enough of this intro.. so much love was put into these movies.
I guess they found the MagnaGuards just about good enough to put them in as bodyguards for key figures of the CLone Wars.
Conceptual artists have one of the best jobs in the world. Being able to create something organic, a character, using pure imagination. Love it
I love watching concept artists and particularly character designers work. One day I want to be in one of those studios taking part in a process like that. One day.
Oh the making of one of the best Star Wars characters. Cool
This video will make a fine addition to my collection
*cough cough*
Definitely could see some of the designs did not go to waste, and became the Magna Guards.
And it looks like one of them became Trench, seen in The Clone Wars. So all isn't lost.
The one thing about Grievous that disappoints me is how they weaken him every new appearance. In the Clone Wars miniseries he was just pure badass, in the movie he was noticeably weaker but he still had some skill, but in the 2008 Clone Wars he was just pathetic. The guy who could take on 5-6 Jedi Masters at once was now barely holding his own against a padawan.
Working with George sounds like such a cool and fun experience. Disney? Not so much
How to be Grievous:
Must have too many lightsabers
Must be trained in the Jedi arts by Count Dooku
Must be hated by Dooku
Must perfect greeting
"Ahh yes the Negotiatiator"
"General Kenobi"
*Cough Cough
This is my ideal job. Studying as a 3D animator at the moment, so i have to do a lot of concept art for that and it's good fun watching your drawings come to life. Here's hoping I end up i this line of work!
lol... a spray bottle
That idea of having General Grievous be depicted as a small child sounds pretty dumb but I do like the idea of exploring where IG-88 came from.
Shit was sooo magical back then. God.
He came out perfectly + that awesome voice.
It's like poetry, it rhymes.
Props to that guy. Grievous is one seriously badass character design!
That's what new SW is missing - someone to judge every idea and choose the most interesting.
Unless your Kathleen Kennedy and opinions and creativity get you fired when working with her..🙄🙄🙄
Everyone is hating the prequels AND the new episodes just because its mainstream. I on the other hand enjoyed the prequels particulary episode III.
Now look. I always thought the prequels were awesome but after the sequels, more and more are coming to appreciate the prequels.
Nobody hated the prequel movies because they were mainstream, people hated them because they weren't all that great upon close inspection.
i remember watching this as a kid
I watched this behind the scenes series two years ago during the first weeks of my school exchange year. I had ups and downs and my emotions ranged from sad to happy. Now I am rewatching it for the third time and everytime I hear the intro from ROTS Webisodes I get flashbacks and relive feelings of moments I had already forgotten. Everytime I hear that intromusic I get chills.
All in all watching BTS of the Prequels and ROTS in particular is almost better than watching the movies themselves.
Thanks for uploading!
Imagine being the one to create someone as iconic as general grevious
My dream job. To be surrounded by an ensemble of various artists who dedicated their lives to their craft and channeling all their energy for a creative purpose. So rewarding.
George: no villain to look like Darth Vader. Disney makes kylo ren like Vader.
not only can they just "draw" but to have such an imagination and creative will that you pursue inspiration through poses in a mirror or looking at inanimate objects everywhere you go, even the bathroom. to then get rejected and start all over again, but with such pleasure in the process you happily do it again and again sounds like the dream job.
Let that asian dude who made darth spray bottle direct episode 10
One of my favourite villains of all time, such an awesome character.
Wow, they made a whole movie out of my chapter in Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga.
It's him here he is
Those concept arts looked Amazing
