    High marks for this excellent video. Super concept & superb execution 👍🏻 Great idea to make each check-in into a short time-lapse clip rather than just having daily snapshots - gives the montage a real kick with all the movement. *So* cool watching all those castings piling up. The consistency & moisture level of everything, as you mentioned, looks so perfect. Keep up the great work guys! :)

That Timelapse really tells the story doesn’t it?! Fast food favourites and slower foods….. didn’t take them long either !!! Well there’s one good thing about this, the faster they eat it, the faster they produce 💩 😅
    Amazing Timelapse’s at the end too, amazing to see the bright colours just disappear as more and more worms devoured it all!! Happy weekend you amazing people!! 💓💐🍁🍂🐝🌷

    What a great visual of how Epigeic function and consume compared to Endogeic worms.
    The "pool tabling" is awesome.
    I always assumed that they prefer the bacteria, fungi, and especially protazoa under the feeding. It seems that's not happening, at least in this case.
    Awesomeness brother!!

      Pretty crazy how they just go right on top! Of course I had the lid on and just yanked it off & filmed...so they were kinda below the surface 😀 But you are right, you can definitely tell the difference between Epigeic vs Endogeic earthworm behavior from this video...and how Epiceic worms don't mind being all over each other!! If there is any doubt worms will eat food right away without waiting...this should do away with it!! Of course some food needed to get worked over by the microbes & bin critters before the worm would go for it ie. the apple. Thanks so much for all your observations and insights!! And of course thanks for watching J&C!!🤜🤛🪱🪱🪱

    Your videos are absolutely helping me to organise my worm bin better. I was running a very wet bin that got acidic real quick, smelled like rotting food. It was one big sticky orange looking mess to be honest. Even the water in the bottom layer smelled rotten. Surprisingly the worms are still there with loads of eggs. But I set things up different now (I use a three layer tower):
    1. Feeding tray (had to add loads of carton bedding to dry things out)
    2. Pre harvest tray (had to add loads of carton bedding to dry things out)
    3. New Inoculating tray (only cardboard bedding)
    I'll have to let the first two layers get settled and dry out way more before feeding again. At the moment the two top layers are both more like pre-harvest trays. First I want to give the worms time to digest everything there is, as both layers are about 70% filled with old food, castings and carton bedding. Eventually I'll start feeding the top tray again. I might have to wait a long time.
    Would love to hear your thoughts on this mate. Thanks

      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      I'm so glad you're finding my videos helpful!! I'll be honest, I think you've come up with a brilliant plan to set your bin up to run like my VermiHut!! I think adding all the dry bedding to the top two trays will go a long way in drying things out and you may find you can feed the top tray again after a few weeks. The inoculating tray method really is the way to go; I love how it captures all the moisture and uses it to get that tray really primed to have the worms work quickly when it is time to be the top feeding tray. I really appreciate you telling us about your bin and how you've come up with a plan to make it run even better. I'm sure there are a lot of folks out there in a similar situation trying to figure out how to get things running more smoothly (& less smelly)! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch our videos!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Thanks for your reply! You’re videos are very helpful. It took me a few videos before I understood how and why you rotate the layers of the vermihut, but it makes sense now. The graphics of how to rotate the layers made things a lot clearer 👍🏼 but I am still curious why the inoculating tray speeds up the composting proces once it becomes the new feeding tray.
      About my bin, thanks for confirming I’m on the right path. I think you’re being a little optimistic with me feeding the bin again in a few weeks time 😅 might have to wait a little longer as I don’t think I have 5000 worms in my tower. Probably closer to 1500.
      And your worms are so thin! I have some giants in there 🪱 but maybe that’s because my bin has been over fed and wet for the last two years

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      😃 I've got abut half Indian blue worms which are skinny and half red wigglers so that maybe another reason why they look thiner as well. Maybe I should feed them more carbs!! I think the inoculating trays speed up the process once they get up to the top feeding tray because they have been marinating in microbe rich, airy, food scrap drippings that are primed to accept the influx of worms that climb up when food is added. The worms are able to easily rip apart the soggy shredded cardboard which is like catnip for them with it's high microbial content! I should be releasing this follow up video tomorrow or the next and it is unbelievable how finished everything looks in the tray after just 56 days being on top.

      @@Vermicompost mate, wish I could share photos on here. Ever since I switched to your method of running the worm bin, everything is good! Looks good, smells good, big and small worms everywhere, moisture level is about right (bedding and castings feel like fresh forest ground, damp but not wet), loads of eggs, loads of castings. What’s your thoughts on the hungry bin? I haven’t seen too many videos on it,

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      I start with I don't own one & I haven't seen one up close. From what I see on their website and this video review ua-cam.com/video/dDIb3XbFaGU/v-deo.html It sounds like it is a great bin for someone/a family that produces a lot of food scrap waste or has access to food scrap waste and bedding. My initial thoughts are I like that it has wheels and it appears to be super sturdy (I saw a 10 year parts warranty, which if honored is great). I do think it looks a little tricky to harvest despite this being a selling point from the manufacturer and the price seems steep, especially if someone is just starting and isn't sure yet if worm farming is a longer term proposition for them. I'm not a big fan of collecting liquid from the bottom of worm bins, I prefer to keep the moisture levels such that they don't leak, so the collecting leachate aspect they boast about is not my cup of tea (the longer leachate sits the faster it becomes anaerobic & putrid/unusable). Of course it can be run without creating liquid. Bottom line, I'm sure if I had a Hungry Bin I would find out how it best worked for me and I would enjoy using it! I hope this helps but again, I do not own one & have not run one, just my impressions from what I see out there. Thanks so much for watching & asking my opinion!!🪱🪱🪱

    I have a question. My worms did great staying in the bin until they had eaten everything I put in the bin less than a week later. Then they tried escaping. Should I do more frequent feedings or should I do larger feedings?
    I also placed a light above them to prevent them from leaving the bin.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +2

      Great question! Occasionally in a new bin if the bedding hasn't really been broken down too much by microbes and other bin critters the worms can kinda run out of food until the bedding gets a little more aged and they can eat it. So I think you have correctly identified your issue. You can do either one, feed more frequently or feed a little larger feedings while checking on them at closer intervals to see if it is enough. Eventually you will get past this little issue and never run into it again. This actually happened to me early on with one of my bins when I had recently started it. As long as you don't smell any foul odors and the bedding seem damp (not wet) you are still in great shape...but when in doubt add more bedding. I hope this helps!!! Thanks so much for asking a question I'm sure some other folks have as well!! And of course thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Which is best for feeding frozen or not frozen food?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому

      Great question! I'm actually doing an experiment on it now. Here is the set up and a time lapse of the first two days! ua-cam.com/video/XG9fjPuXcTU/v-deo.html When we freeze the food, the water within it expands, breaking the cell walls of the plant material which helps physically break down the food scraps. This allows the worms and microbes to attack it faster. I typically let it thaw out a little before I put it in my bins, but the worms can sense the temperature so they will move away until it warms up a bit. I just keep a container in my freezer and add food scraps to it as I go, so I'm always ready to feed my bins when they need it! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & ask a great question!!🪱🪱🪱

    Did you just open the bin every day and take a time lapse or did you leave the lid off the entire time?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +2

      Great question! Once a day we set the camera & the lights up, started recording, then whipped off the lid! We recorded for just over a minute, then put the lid back on top until the next day. We sped up each clip between 25 to 40 times depending on which time lapse you are watching within the video. That sudden blast of bright light is why you see them kind of "run for cover" at the beginning of each days time lapse. It was super fun to make and such a surprise each day to see how much they had eaten and what they were focusing their efforts on. Great question!! I had meant to explain how I did it within the video but must have gotten too excited as I was filming!! Thanks so much for the question & thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hello, thanks for the helpful information you have on your channel. I've just started a worm bin and am kicking myself for buying a Worm Cafe (3 tray system with a spigot for leachate) instead of the Urban Worm Bag. I should have done more research! I have a lot of worms falling into the bottom bin for the leachate every day. They don't crawl back up on their own and just stay there until I rescue them. I tried digging everything out and putting down a layer of unshredded cardboard and then putting my bedding (coco coir and shredded paper/cardboard) back on with the worms in it, but I'm STILL finding worms in the bottommost bin. Do you have any solution for this issue, or are tray systems just bad?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      I think I can help you out! Check out this video for how I manage my VermiHut: ua-cam.com/video/SfUzjr107Hw/v-deo.html and this one: ua-cam.com/video/6w2S38gq7Vo/v-deo.html With a three tray system you can use one of the trays to put just dry shredded cardboard in up to the top of that tray and make it your lowest tray right above the basin/stand with the spigot. When you are ready to rotate, use that lowest tray which will now be damp with the liquid that drips (full of microbes) to put on top and clean out the one you harvest and ill it to the top with dry shredded cardboard to put on the bottom again. What this does is capture all the liquid so it doesn't drip down to the bottom basin and it gets the bedding prepped and ready to go in that tray for the worms. As long as you rotate every 60 days, you should have a relatively dry basin with little to no worms down below (only put dry bedding in a tray not in the basin). Hopefully I understood your comment correctly and you haven't already tried this! This may work well with your system like it does with my VermiHut worm tower. The only other thing I can think of to try is put cheese cloth tightly over the basin and put the three trays on top of it. Theoretically the worms won't get through the cheese cloth but liquid can...just be sure to put the worm cafe somewhere that won't be bothered by a leak out the sides until you know it works correctly. I hope something I've said in here helps!! I really do love my worm tower!! As for the Urban Worm Bag...I say get it and use both bins!! Thanks so much for watching my videos!!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Thank you so so much for your EXTREMELY helpful response! I haven't tried putting a bin of just cardboard yet, I'll do that today! I was thinking about the cheesecloth because I saw it in an Amazon review, but I'll try your idea first. I've just watched the first video you linked which was helpful to see, but the Vermihut bins seem to be a lot shallower than the Worm Cafe bins. Should I be filling up my feeding bin completely to the top? I recently packed it full of cardboard to try and stop the worms from dropping to the spigot basin---would you recommend just waiting to let the worms eat through the bedding, or would it be wise to take some of it and put it underneath the feeding tray as an "old inoculating tray" of sorts? Thank you again, I've subscribed for more of your content!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +2

      I'm so glad you found it helpful!! If you want I think you could take some of the extra bedding you put in that top feeding tray and combine it with straight dry shredded cardboard and fill another tray which you can put as the bottom most tray (inoculating tray). For your top feeding tray, I would add bedding and food to every feeding until you get to the top of the tray, then add the bottom inoculating tray to the top to make that the new top feeding tray as you take out the middle tray to harvest and refill with shredded cardboard to become the new bottom inoculating tray. You will find that even though you fill a tray to the top with dry bedding, it will eventually shrink down with the moisture that moves into it. Hopefully all that makes sense...sometimes it's easier to show on the videos with diagrams😀

      @@Vermicompost It makes sense, you are a great teacher. I tried the other day to get some of the extra bedding out, but it was already really damp and full of worms, so I decided it would be best to leave it as is. No worms in the dry cardboard innoculating bin down below, and definitely no more worms in the draining bin! I'm very happy with this fix, thank you so very much!

    Hei. I have worms in my containers where I grow vegetables despite using tarp under them. I don't want worms in them. Do you have any advice on how to repell them naturally to make them keep away from there?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      Worms are nature's recyclers...most folks actually try to encourage earthworms as they take dead plant & animal matter and recycle the nutrients into a form that plants can readily use. Epigeic (comport worms) and endogeic earthworms (typical garden worms) do not eat living plant matter so at worst they will not harm your plants. But if you don't want them you could try to bait them out by putting food scraps just under the soil layer at the very edge of your garden bed and continue to check it every two days to remove any worms (of course other critters may find the food if you don't bury it a few inches deep). Keep doing this until you stop seeing worms, but after a little while, more worms will be back...The repopulate pretty quickly!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Thank you for the answer. Yes, I know that worms are very good in the garden but these are small containers and pots. Some of them may be moved indoors when it gets cooler outside and there are also other reasons why I don't worms in them. That's why I placed them on tarp, not directly on soil but the worms got there anyway.
      Do you know of any scents or other things that they don't like so they would avoid that area?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely, many reasons for not wanting worms in your garden material…but I don’t know of any natural way to eradicate them where they won’t come back if at anytime the pots are outside touching soil. Worms will always be attracted to dead or decaying formerly living material no matter the smell…eventually the microbes will break that natural chemical down and worms will be back. So the only thing I personally can think of is continually bating them out and not letting the pots touch soil or be on the ground where the worms can find it (they will easily crawl on a tarp in the moist morning dew.) Sorry about that, perhaps there is a way that I am not aware of.

    I started looking to vermicomposting to learn how to make aerated worm tea to sell as a fertilizer in my city (Miami), but then I learned that worm tea really only has living beneficial microbiomes in it for 24 to 48 hours after it's made. I don't think a meaningful amount of people would buy a meaningful amount of my liquid fertilizier if it's literally only useful for 24 to 48 hours.
    The thing is: my main interest is hydroponics actually. I am looking to sell stuff like fertilizer just to offset the costs related to hydroponics (electricity, hardware), do you think it would still be worth it for me to get into vermicomposting to make another product I could sell to people locally that isn't worm tea?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому

      That is great you are into hydroponics!! I'm not sure I'm the best person to give advice on selling vermicompost products as I do not sell worms, vermicompost or worm casting tea. As with any business it is important to start small, see what the market is with your product before you spend too much money on overhead and supplies, so you may want to visit some farmers markets and see if there is an interest in worms, vermicompost or worm casting tea..or even little totes that you prep with holes, screen, bedding an 200 worms ready to sell as a starter worm bin. There are folks that are successful and folks that go back to making it a hobby. Checkout @MemesWormsLLC @TheGardenAndWormLady and @northeastworms They each run a worm business and describe the pros and cons in their videos. Good luck to you...if there is a will there is a way!!! I don’t sell any worms or vermicompost so I don’t make any money from selling products but as an Amazon affiliate I earn a small commission when folks use my links to purchase things on Amazon without any extra cost to them. I also make a little money from UA-cam which I reinvest back into the channel to try different bins and improve my videos. So in a way the worms earn me some money😀 Thanks so much for the question & thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
