- How to tell if you're overfeeding your worm bin & why this can lead to disaster for your worms! Overfeeding a worm bin is the #1 mistake beginners make when starting out. No matter how many worms you start with, heed this advice so you can reap the benefits of turning your food scraps into natural organic fertilizer in the form of worm castings for your garden!
This outdoor worm bin is 2 1/2 years old & has approximately 4000 worms. In this video we increase the volume dramatically & give them a huge feeding...Which can be done if you know your bin and it's limitations. The other thing that happens when over feeding, or feeding too often like I did for awhile, the worms do not get around to eating the bedding so it just clumps horribly over time if using cardboard. I still have some cardboard in that state and its not breaking down. Nomatter how much I try to break it up manually, it clumps back together in something similar to clay. Rrrrrrr.

Nice to see the outdoor bin patrick. This time i harvested my outdoor bin too. It was ready n wet. The big chunks were put back alongwith the worms. I left some of the castings in the bin n added my hot compost pile to it. And ofcourse not forgetting the scraps. I luv to harvest this bin. As i dont hv to worry about it. I like the smell of the castings. Now i hv to let it dry for sifting.

I think one of the signs/dangers of overfeeding is other bin critters get a chance to move in and multiply in larger numbers. By the way, I 'll trade you those BSF larvae for slugs. I found two slugs in one of my bins (which means I may see more in the future!). I just found out slugs eat worms. Ugh.

I really like the you parameters are directly tied to the micro herd in your bins. Worms don't eat the food, the microherd does, if there isn't a sufficient population, anerobes will explode !!

Well if it was a batting average it would be really good!! Worms eat the food...and the microbes that are all over them but get most of their nutrients from the microbes...not too far from what our micro biomes in out guts do for us! Great video. I just started a worm bin (red wigglers) around 3 months ago. It is indoors in my basement around 70 degrees F. I have it in a 27 gallon plastic bin with a lid. I drilled holes on the top portion of the bin and the lid for airflow. My biggest issue is that some keep getting out and dying. How do you get your cardboard shredded so small? I probably have not been using enough bedding. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just subscribed and will check out more of your videos. Thanks very much!
Thank you!! I have links to the shredder I use in the pinned comment and in the description of every video. It is a 12 sheet cross cut, micro shredder. It takes corrugated cardboard and absolutely obliterates it into tiny pieces. A 27 gallon bin can be deep which sometimes can trap carbon dioxide down low because it is heavier than Oxygen. Additionally the humidity maybe high as indicated by condensation on the inside sides of the bin. Worms use this moisture as a super highway to explore. You can prevent this by maybe drilling some holes in the sides to get more airflow and like you said, add more bedding. The solution to almost all worm bin issues is add more bedding. You may want to skip a feeding as well if the bin is too moist. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and subscribing to our channel!! I'm still picking out Worms from Jill's Southside and moving them to the Northside. 4200, so far! My worms are only 2-3", but there's still a lot. Then, again...I keep adding powdered cornmeal and they are multiplying like mad. I'd like to harvest everything and begin again, but I doubt I will have that much patience. And I'm still medicating, so being very careful ❤

I think that the one caveat to what you said at @06:30 .... is that certain foods will remain as leftovers & take a really, really long time to get eaten by the worms. So if you find *those* kinds of leftovers then its probably OK to feed more :) Nice build-up of the available space for the system's occupants 👍🏻
I've been waiting as well to see what the time difference in BSFL arrival is between FL & NJ. I think your outdoor bin stays fuller than mine so I maybe able to see them better since I can get to just about every cubed inch (see what I did there ; ) during each feeding. My guess is that the BSFs are around here in NJ now that the warmer weather is here. For whatever reason though I have not yet seen them in my outdoor systems. Admittedly though, I have not really gone digging around searching for them :)

It's actually one of the trays from my VermiHut worm tower. It came with five & I run four on my system. There's 1,600 1/4 inch holes in them so they work as perfect sifters. May I ask a question: There are a lot of weeds in my garden. If I grind them finely and mix the green ones with the brown ones that have died before, can I give it to the worms as food, thus bringing the nitrogen carbon balance to the ideal ratio?
That sounds like a great idea, especially if you are able to freeze the green ones. Just be sure to give 3-5 times as much bedding (brown ones) to one part green ones. Also feed less than you think you need. Your bin can heat up when you feed weeds and grasses, just be sure to include lots of bedding. I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I plan to start my farm with the stacked 5gal bucket setup that you see everywhere. I don't want to spend a lot of time balancing things. Would it be a good idea to kindof "stage" my feeding? What I mean is I could put my compost scraps and bedding in a container with no worms and give it "some time" to burn out if it's going to heat up, and then, when it's done, give it to the worms? World that be a good idea, or would it be robbing the nutrients or anything that I'm not thinking about?
That sounds like a great set up! I don't think letting food scraps decompose/heat up & cool down in a compost pile first will rob nutrients for the ultimate purpose of feeding your garden but I also don't think you NEED to do it either. If you feed your worms in appropriate amounts according to thier abilites to consume your food scraps, the worms will break the food down much quicker than a stand alone compost pile. In other words, compost worms eat the food scraps before it has the time to decay very much and their digestion speads up the total process of converting food scraps to garden fertilizer/soil amendment. Always star with way less and I mean WAY less than you think they need with regard to food scraps and use more bedding. Here are a couple of videos you may have already seen that show me starting new systems: ua-cam.com/video/UsH3k92KhYg/v-deo.html & ua-cam.com/video/g5Sag75OAXY/v-deo.html You'll see that I barely feed them at first. But I quickly ramp up the feedings as the worms show me how much they can eat. So bottom line, try both ways and see which is more sustainable for you and your patience level...I, in general, take the easy less time consuming way out! I hope this helps!! I have a mite problem in my worm bin. Tons of tiny brown looking mites are crawling all over the sides etc, and on a piece of decaying food I noticed hundreds of tiny white dots. Are these white mites too? I threw the piece of food away. How do I keep the mites at bay?
Great question! The mites can be super annoying, even though they are worm bin helpers we are trying to run worm bins, right?!!?😁 The white dots, if they are moving, are most likely mites or possibly springtails if you see them jumping. An explosion of mites or springtails is most likely caused by excessive moisture and/or too much food. So the solution is to try to slowly dry the bin by adding more bedding a bit and feed less. You probably even want to skip a feeding or two. In the short term, you can bait the mites out to bring down their numbers fast while you adjust the over all parameters of your bin. In order to bait the mites out, break off a couple of small pieces of bread and wet them. Then put them right on the top surface of the bin. Come back in 2-3 hours and see if they are covered in mites. If not, give it another couple of hours. When they are covered, throw the bread away or put it in your out door compost and repeat the process to bring the mite population down. Just don't forget the bread in there over night or you will just be feeding them and increasing their population!! You can also do the same thing with banana peels, they love them and wet bread!! Although mites are bin helpers they flourish in slightly more acidic and damp conditions than the compost worms, so when you get a population explosion they can be an indicator that your bin parameter are getting a little out of whack. The solution is less food and more bedding. I hope this helps!! Is there a reason why you remove the soldier fly larvae?
This year I've been plucking them out and putting them in my regular compost bin, but for the previous 2 summers I left them in. Without knowing, I put some banana plant leaves in this worm bin that had hundreds of them... It was early in the summer and I didn't want them to overwhelm the bin so I took a bunch out as they grew...here is the video where I first found them: ua-cam.com/video/qoVovBqwESQ/v-deo.html Long story short, I don't mind them but there were a bunch early on in the season...but they absolutely love my regular compost bin. Did the worms eat the lemon? I read that citrus fruits burn them, and they prefer corn etc. That my just be one guy's opinion, however.
Yes! The compost worms ate the lemons! I usually don't give them a whole lot of lemons or other citrus at a time, but they do eat it! My bins are big enough that if I put in a food they can't eat due to pH, heat or other factors, they have room to avoid it until the microbes breakdown enough to allow the worms to eat it. I think people give advice about forbidden foods because they are afraid folks will overfeed that particular food which can cause a bin to ferment or give off ammonia. 500 Euros..What a great start for your worm bin!! They'll come with some instructions I'm sure, but be sure to rehydrate them with a little sprinkle of water after you put them in and if you have a lid keep it off in a well lighted room for the first 48 hours or more to get them settled...sorry if you already know this, I just get excited when I hear about a new worm bin getting started!! Cucumber is a great fast food to get them started, especially if the skin is broken for easy access. I bet after 5-7 days they'll have a good portion of it gone!! It was actually my Outdoor Worm Bin made of two 20 gallon fabric pots...so easy and cheap to start up & run!! My Urban Worm bag has a huge pumpkin in it right now...and I'm kinda regretting doing that 😂🤣😂 Autumn got her wish to get the pumpkin out of the freezer but she's regretting what she's seeing...and smelling now!!

Do you buy shredded cardboard? If you shred them, how are you doing it?
Great question!! I do not buy shredded cardboard. I do it all myself with a 5 year old model of this 12 sheet cross cut MICRO shredder: amzn.to/3xYZKYu It is amazing!! It absolutely obliterates corrugated cardboard boxes. In fact I got my mom one and she shreds her boxes for me as well. Whatever shredder you get make sure it is 12 sheet to be able to easily handle the cardboard and Cross Cut & Micro to get the pieces super small. @@Vermicompost I just tried it and it shreds it just fine. The problem is that if I open the cover too much, there's a safety disable switch. So it's not easy to feed the cardboard. Going to figure out a way to disable the disable switch.

Is there a reason you wear a glove on one hand but not the other?
Believe it or not there is a method to my madness😂 I just use a glove on my right hand because that’s the hand that typically digs into the bin & my dirty finger nails don’t look very good on camera to me. I usually only hold things or pick up things with my left hand so no need for a glove as the finger nails stay clean on that hand. I also figured I'd save more gloves that way! I have no issues getting my bare hands into the worm bin when I'm not filming, it is just for aesthetics on videos!! Great question, I know it looks odd to wear just one when my left hand gets dirty anyway😂 Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Here's how I start off my bins with some strawberry tops to find out if & how much they are eating: ua-cam.com/video/1IRP-Nu6_90/v-deo.html Measuring the weight of food can be useful as you work your way up to more food to find out how much they eat and prevent overfeeding. Of course as the worms increase in population you'll find they eat more, but measuring the food can be a useful tool to help for sure! I've heard that body weight a day rule of thumb or even 1/2 their body weight a day thrown around but that has not been the reality I experience with my compost worms. It is probably more like a quarter of that. They also eat more in the summer than the winter and a newer bin will eat less than a more "seasoned" bin full of microbes. The worms eat the bedding as well so that would have to factored in...And if we feed once a week versus once a month or bi monthly getting the amount wrong can really turn into a fermented or even worse ammonia filled mess as any overfeeding situation would be in there for a while! And of course some food they eat quicker than others so a good mix is important. When starting a worm bin, I've found starting with less food than I think, then seeing how the worms do after 5-7 days and slowly working my way up making sure they've eaten almost all the food each time, until I get to the point where I have a good handle on how much they can eat serves me well. If I see they seem to be eating more food I test their boundaries to find their limit. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and bring up a great point about feeding our worm bins!!🪱🪱🪱

Definitely not good for human consumption!! If I had to do life all over again I would never have eaten it as a kid or fed it to my own!!
