    Well, my worm bin must be doing better than I thought because they cleaned up a lot of cantelope rinds and tomato scraps. My top bin is about too full, so I swapped it with the one underneath that I was innoculating like you showed. I'll start feeding up there now and harvest that one below after they clean it up some more. Official delerious worm counter. I saw that 1000 one befor you did, I was hollerin 1000!!! lol and now a worm bath, lol I can't believe I watched worm bathing. lol Die mites die! Thanks for the video.

    Congrats on breaking 1000 in the tiny bin! I'm kind of blown away by that density. I'm looking at the 3 gal bin on amazon and it says the interior dimensions are 11.5" * 7.5" or an area of 86.25 sqin. That's considerably smaller than a square foot, only 60%! If those measurements are correct, then a square foot of worm bin at your density would hold 1680 worms!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому +3

      Thank you!! Those dimensions a pretty close for the bottom of the bin. The bin tapers in a little from top to bottom. The top of the bin measures 13 inches by 9 inches and the bottom is 11.75 inches by 7.75 inches. The square footage looks like it is somewhere between 0.82 to 0.63 square feet. I'm not sure if the volume is important but the depth was about 3 inches. Of course that could vary wildly with a little fluffing of the contents. Thanks for figuring that out; I hadn't thought of figuring out the density of worms in there!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому +3

      Yes!! I need help...I guess that's why Autumn only lets me have 3...because if I have 4 I'll have 40 not too long after🤣😂🤣 Soooo the bin tapers a little. The top is 13 inches by 9 inches but tapers down to 11.75 inches by 7.75 inches. So the surface area is somewhere between 0.81 Square feet and 0.63 Square feet. Not sure is depth is important but it was about 3 inches deep, of course that depth can vary widely with "fluffing". I guess I have proved with constant regular weekly feedings & added bedding you can get more than 1000 worms per square foot!!! You can also get a gazillion mites into less than a square foot😱 Thanks so much for the fun comment, check my math, I wouldn't trust it!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @Vermicompost

      Honestly the best way I have found to get the tiny worms after a harvest is to put a strawberry top or some other small fast food that they like about a half inch down into the castings (I put my castings in a storage container or a cocoon nursery after harvesting.) Come back in three days and most, if not all of the babies will be attacking the food and you can just scoop them out and pick them off the food. Repeat if necessary or until you get no more babies attacking the food. Hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!! I'm so happy my previous videos have helped you out!!🪱🪱🪱

    What is the temperature of the bath water?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому

      I used room temperature water around 75℉ or 23.9℃. I don't usually "wash" my worms but I just wanted to get all the mites off as I restarted this bin. It was only the second time ever that I did this. Thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Red wigglers are a lot smaller than European night crawlers are, right? I'm trying to get an idea of what 500 European night crawlers would look like. I also have Louisiana swamp worms and I think they are somewhere in between sizewise. I'm just trying to get an idea of what that would look like. Interesting video as usual. you've sure got a lot more patience than I do!!

      Thank you!! I kinda tricked Autumn into helping me when I said on video I would be counting them, but she was a good sport...but we both were regretting it about halfway in!! I think you are right Cookie. I don't have any ENC's or Louisiana swamp worms to compare to my red wigglers to, but from what I've heard you are correct. Thanks so much for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱

    Instead of counting I probably would suggest weighing them when you start a bin then weigh it when you harvest , obviously if the worms are heavier you got a increase in colony size , a bit easier I think .

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому

      You are absolutely right...that would be way easier...but I can't resist😂🤣😂 It is so much fun to know exactly how much I have!! I have started weighing them in different amounts and plotting the data. The slope of the line is a great formula to find out how many worms are in a given pile of worms if you know the weight. Here is the formula after several data points: y=0.0007x - 0.0091 where y is the weight in pounds and x is the number of worms...so 1 pound of worms is approximately 1415 worms or 1000 worms is approximately 0.69 pounds. Now there is no way I would count out the total in my other bins as they are much bigger than this one!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and pass on a good tip!!🪱🪱🪱

    Can't remember what my guess was but i did suspect over a 1000, it would be nice to know how many castings were harvested, now for round 2 lol

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому +3

      Great guess!! I did not think we'd be over 1000!!! There were just shy of 7 lbs of castings, I forgot to put that in the video. Not bad for a Tiny Worm bin!! Thanks so much for watching!!

    Wow 1008 red wigglers! That was painstaking counting those worms. They looked great after their bath. I’m thinking you may get an additional 250, but I would figure you are definitely getting close to the maximum holding capacity of the bin 😁🪱

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  2 роки тому +1

      You got that right...absolutely painstaking!! I've got to think I'm at the max capacity by now...I was surprised to see another 400 worm jump from the only 130 jump last time around after going up 400 prior to that. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch Rick!!🪱🪱🪱
