    This is great. Enjoy your father / son relationship and each other. I had just built my dad (retired USAF F-16 mechanic) a gaming PC and he was getting used to the Viper so we could do exactly this. Cancer came and took him very quickly, we never got the chance to fly together. Thank you for this video and sharing with me what might have been. :)

    Damn, how cool! My Dad used to be an armourer in the RAF during the 80's. Was stationed in West Germany during the height of the cold war and really developed my love for combat Sims with an introduction to Falcon 4.0 as a kid. The man once spent an hour descrbing to me the inner workings of the Sidewinder :)

    I wish I could get my boys into this. I would love to play PvP with them. They're into the Call of Duty shooter type games and could care less about flight simming. They watch me and say "cool" and I have gotten them set up to fly, which they lose interest in 10 minutes. They're like "okay dad...I have taken off and I am on course. Now what do I do? What? You mean I just sit here and do nothing for the next 100 miles? Uh...I think I have had enough..."

    i usually dont do many things with my dad, like in the pc, but sometimes he comes to me saying that we should make a flight some day. now, i can do a flight with him but usually its very lame cause its only 1 screen and 1 joystick and stuff. sometimes i dream about having a full cockpit with 2 seats, reserved both for me and for the special guy that brought me into this world.

    That's brilliant that the two of you still "play" together like this, it must be an awesome experience with all the gear you have there, you're just missing the HUD - which I worked on the software back in the late '80s/early '90s in Airborne Displays Division (ADD) at GEC Avionics, I updated bits of CCIP, CCRP and LCOS as part of Block 50. Hence, the F-16 is my "go-to" bird in DCS too but I have to put up with an R9 3900X, 32GB, RTX3060 and Quest 2. Those are some amazing hardware specs you have, and I'm very jealous! 😉

    you guys can smooth out the jerkyness of the formation by having lead not hold a speed but a throttle setting that kinda keeps him around the speed you wanna be at.. do not move that throttle back n forth as lead with a wing man close in.. but instead control your speed by a gentle STEADY CONSTANT pull on the strick in turns. Even if you're at 240 or 270 and u called 250 it's fine. It's better to not jerk the throttle because if you jerk the throttle you will move around alot in your wingmans screen. For him it's much better to fly wing on a jet with a constant power setting rather than a jet that's jerking the throttle to hold 250. i hope this made sense.

    • @Willdass
      @Willdass  Рік тому

      Thx for the tips. We aim to fly at a set throttle setting/ fuel flow when at similar weight and in cruise/climb/decent, but hard to do in the pattern since we are constantly change the AOA, bank angles and altitude. We are still quite new to formation flying so a lot to improve on! Thanks for watching :)

    • @Dermeister009
      @Dermeister009 Рік тому +1

      @@Willdass well the set throttle is just for lead fuel flow is a good idea too but mainly lead can call out a spead with the pre briefed agreement that it's not going to be held to the knot and is just an idea for closure rates but once on the wing u dont need to know the speed just use visual cues and hold position. it will come with practice the more you fly formation you will pick up on it.

    • @Willdass
      @Willdass  Рік тому

      @@Dermeister009 Well yeah, would be impossible for the wingman to also have a set throttle, that's not what I meant. When in close formation like this I'm not looking at my HUD/Instruments so the speed call outs are more "nice to know", not "need to know". But I still find it valuable as I can understand when lead is planning to reduce /increase speed and I prepare to make necessary adjustments. For example on base/final with high AOA I don't have a lot of throttle to make additional reductions reductions so I need to use the speed break and that ofc takes time to react. Therefore its good to be ahead of the curve. If lead would not warn me about speed reductions I would probably blow past him, hard to feel small power corrections in the sim. But thanks for tips! Do you fly IRL?

    • @Dermeister009
      @Dermeister009 Рік тому

      @@Willdass Yea i gave the tip because it's a common mistake that leads do and i used to do it too, and i notticed it was alot easyer for wing men to fly off of me if i kept my throttle steady regardless of speed aslong as i was with in a speed bubble. I gave that tip because i noticed the lead infront was "jerking" back n forthmeaning he was fucking his throttle about to hold a speed. Wich in turns makes it a bit harder and less smooth on the wingman. I do not fly IRL, IRL i'm in the canadian Army, i'm a armored crewman BUT i'm in my 30's I've been flying Since i'm 9 years old and i was the youngest instructor pilot in a squadron called the freebirds in Falcon 4.0 all the way through BMS and now i fly BMS altho i don't have as much time to fly now than i used to i used to take new people up and train them to fly with the squadron i was in. any how i hope the tip helps to smooth out the jerkyness. The main take away is don't worry about being on speed as lead so much but do worry about accelerations and deceleration of the aircraft. it will allow the wingman to tuck in there quite closer with out worry that his lead will sudandly slow down or accelerate.

      I only have experience with the Aero, G2 and Quest Pro, but out of those three the Aero is definitely my favorite. It is the sharpest both inside the cockpit and at longer ranges. The performance is also incredible, especially now with Dynamic Foveated Rendering (game changer). The Quest Pro is also a very good option (best lenses), now that the price has come down. But was not fan of the battery life, having to constantly reapply Oculus Tray Tool settings (auto apply never worked for me), and I also experienced a lot of ghosting...
      The downsides of the Aero for me is the price (obviously) and it not having inside out tracking, it's also not as comfortable as the G2 on my head.

I have the G2 and Valve Index, both of which have their pros and cons, the index having the proper base stations along with the best controllers and the G2 for the clarity. I feel the aero with the index controllers would be the best. Thoughts? Is that possible?

      @@mental720s No worries, happy to help :) It requires lighthouse tracking, so that's what I meant regarding the down side of not having inside out tracking. I have one base station now, would be optimal with two, but have not had any significant tracking issues yet.
      Don't quote me but I think that is the solution most use if they want the Aero and controllers. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. The Varjo Base setup uses SteamVR to connect to basestations and controllers. But you don't need to fly DCS in SteamVR (I don't).

    Do you guys fly multiplayer or liberations/campaigns together?

    • @Willdass
      @Willdass  Рік тому +3

      We usually fly on a training server I host. Usually some formation flying, air refuelling and some patterns( both VFR and IFR). Recently started incorporating some BFM sets and basic A-G.
      I also often fly on the Hoggit at war servers or Grayflag. Have not tried the liberation campaign yet.
      Thanks for watching!

    Might be a stupid question but is DCS better than FS2020 ? I see they both have allot of gigs but you can obviously shoot in DCS being the difference. What are the maps like ? They open words also or restricted to a degree ? I'm thinking of getting into the DCS world is why I ask. Currently been playing the other since rhe release but looking for something new. XPlane 12 is dope also. But not like this ... opinions ??

    • @Willdass

      IMO DCS is far superior when it comes to flight modeling and military aircraft (ofc). For example there is a huge difference in quality between the DCS F18 and MSFS F18, it's not even comparable. Even if you don't like dropping bombs/air to air, DCS is great for formation flying and just flying around in jets/warbirds/helos. The aircraft in MSFS does not feel as "worn in" as in DCS either, looks almost too clean... DCS aircraft feel more lively to me.
      Ground textures and weather effects are better in MSFS. MSFS have the whole earth mapped, while DCS have restricted maps (still huge and it will take you a few hours to cross the maps depending on the aircraft). DCS looks good though, don't get me wrong.
      I also don't like the way MSFS does keybinds, they do not have separate keybinds per aircraft, which is really annoying.
      For me it really comes down to this:
      If you want to fly GA/Commercial and go sightseeing: fly MSFS
      If you want to fly military aircraft (in any capacity, combat or non combat) DCS, no doubt.

    Are the Varjo aero as good as they say?

    • @Willdass
      @Willdass  Рік тому +1

      I've only tried the HP Reverb G2, Meta Quest Pro and the Aero, and to me its the clear winner. The clarity is just insane. Main downside being the FOV compared to the Quest Pro. The definitive game changer now is that you can have Dynamic Foveated Rendering with the Aero. Which gives huge performance boost with a insanely sharp eye-tracked sweet spot.
