    looks like eagle dynamics listened to the feedback & made it so that the AIM-9 doesn't lose lock when switching into dogfight mode. i'm really proud of them for that -- paying attention to feedback from experienced aircraft operators.

    As someone who doesn’t have DCS, just watches a few videos here and there, I’m constantly blown away with the advances the platform makes. It’s a bit surreal watching an actual F-16 pilot fly an F-16 in a publicly available sim, while the F-16 is still in service.

      Yup. Im runnin (2d) with high grahpic settings (though SSS disabled, just for old gpu) with 20gb ddr3 i5-4960k, gtx 960 4gb. almost 8 years old computer, ofc that 4gb gpu is bought later, but that is also still 5-6 years old :) All i am saying you are totally correct. Ok i am runinnin on "low" fps ~24-40. But in sim thats confusingly enough. Ofc for many it would not be, but for me that is. Ofc i hope will get new computer soon, but still many ppl seem to think DCS takes huge computer. Ok it takes huge space from SSD, but so does pretty much every big game do. Well it made me buy new ssd, cause had only 240gb before :) But yeah. If not VR and can live without V-sync, it is very surprising how 2.9 rolls. Heck with 2.8 was SSAO totally no-go for me. After 2.9 I have had all the filters on. (I play with Single thread, cause extrenal view bugs on my computer, all those "small lags" take 2-3 secs for me, but still with ST version also seem to run VERY much better now. I think that just by upgrading my GPU to RTX something cheap, I can get even few years more with this machine. As crazy as it sounds. (what comes to DCS. Many other newer game is ofc pretty much "use old filters and low settings" stuff. But DCS give VERY much room to GPU, what comes to filtering. And now the code seems to be even more better, what comes to total control of GPU for DCS (in nvidia control panel I just let DCS decide everything, before I didnt. Now that seems to work better, especially for older GPU´s. Though gotta mention, that when I yesterday tried DCS in my friends new computer, with RTX not cheap at all something, it blew my mind how much better it looked, though i put all the same settings. But that just tells about DCS´s good self-optimatization of different GPU´s / filters / shaderversions. So yes, I totally say that EVEN with older computer, if one just has somekind of gaming gpu -> go ahead and try! It can surprise. It surprised me so totally 3 years ago, i havent pretty much played anything else after that.. DCS is so overwhelming, even for player of dcs, that still sometimes i crash my plane just for focusing on some detail. Now on Matt Wagners latest apache update video, it is crazy ho nicely the grass is moving, when propeller is kicking some air into the ground - for example. Surtain copter crasher effect. :D @@CasualTeas

    • @lasselahti4056
      @lasselahti4056 Рік тому +5

      DCS is actually free. If you only have somekind of GPU for gaming -> go ahead and try. Yes it takes dedication, but with trainers that come with every plane (with dcs there are two free planes with it. SU-25t, and TF-51D). And it also has nice mission editor "sandbox" where you can create huge battles, even if not playing yourself. You can put 100 hornets against 100 hornets and press play and see what happens.. etcetc. :) It has huge collection of all kinds of war machines, not only aircrafts. Mostly ofc we are talking about cold war and post-cold war era machines, but it has also ww2 stuff! And yes. It is overwhelming. Just think how that is with vr + 3d :) I had to stop VR after 10 mins at first time, just to throw up. :D

      I technically have DCS, but I'm too cheap to actually do much with it. Neither the Frogfoot nor the Mustang are really my jam, and beyond that single aircraft are significantly more expensive than I'm accustomed to paying for whole games.

    I think the reason he came apart in the clouds was that the airframe was already damaged from your earlier hits.
    The damage model will account for loss of structural integrity, resulting in a reduction of safe airspeed and load factor.

    Per your initial small complaint, the numbers on the hud are supposed to update at 4 hz. This makes them slow and readable while the rest of the moving geometries (such as the hud tape, vi, and elevation bars) update at 60hz or 55, I forget which. However, in DCS, everything in the hud updates at 20 hz and I don't know why they did this. It makes the numbers too fast and the rest of the symbology a bit jittery. Maybe because the data bus between all the systems communicating data runs at 20 hz, but it's a wrong assumption that it would display to that rate. I argued it with them, but they basically said I don't have credibility I guess and neither do the dozens of hud tapes out there so whatever. Thanks for pointing it out. I hope your comments have some weight and influence with them.

    17:35 - Hey Mover, BMS (but not DCS AFAIK) has a view feature called 'Smart Scaling' that's in place to tackle the kind of visual resolution issues you mention here. They cite a study, "Improving Target Orientation Discrimination Performance in Air-to-Air Flight Simulation" (Serfoss 2003), that discusses this matter.

      Know I'm a month late, but wanted to say ED already addressed this and it cannot happen in DCS. Something about it how it would break multiple other systems, spaghetti code. They know the visibility is not what it should be, so they put in some easier spotting option is the settings, but that just adds a dot to make it easier to see beyond 10NM. The range that is particularly bad for BFM in DCS is 2-10NM, I can't see aspect whatsoever on high settings in VR. BMS does this perfectly however

    Excellent point on the take off single digit airspeed movement. I find that if you fly the jets down low, say over trees, you do not get the feeling you are doing 300 to 500 knots. There is something wonky there and it feels like, with how the terrain is moving, you are going vastly slower. • @CakePrincessCelestia
      @CakePrincessCelestia Рік тому

      @@Etha-xi8ei Which is ridiculous. On my old 3570k when it still had a 970 with just 3.5GB of VRAM in it, the forest visibility range slider would do exactly nothing but change the range at which those trees pop in. Framerates were locked at the same spot regardless. If it wasn't an issue on that crate which now would totally count as a potato, it probably isn't even remotey on more recent hardware.
      But yes, tree size is one factor for the sense of speed. Another is FOV. Especially in pancake, many tend to fly with a FOV similar to what we can see here in the video or on Growling Sidewinder's channel - almost all the way zoomed out, cramming a 100+ degree FOV into maybe just a 30-40 degree window that is the monitor, could as well be 50 or 60 with a large one, but you basically would have to match your DCS FOV with the FOV of your monitor, which often is zooming almost all the way in to get a realistic sense of speed. In VR, it automagically always matches 1:1 due to its nature, unless you're hitting that VR zoom button for compensating the lower than reticlular resolution of the device.

    Excellent info. I don't know how much time you have spent fiddling with the MFSSB settings on the Winwing stick. I've had mine since they were released and I just discovered that the force sensors can be adjusted for force in the "MFSSB Config" tab in SimApp Pro. Using 60% for pitch and 55% for roll sliders, 40% (full scale) on the Displacement Only Mode slider, and "Force + Displacement" in the Mode Select (top section) is a huge improvement. The airplane is more responsive and precise. All settings in the stick axis commands are default in DCS. I think there is room for further tweaking. High stick forces were nice in the T-38 during heavy maneuvering As I would expect in the real jet but doesn't work well in DCS. All of my actual tanking experience was spent in the front end of the big gray gas bag looking for clouds and turbulence to fly through so I'm surely no expert at getting on and hanging off the boom. The Viper is not easy to tank in DCS. I think the settings above will make a difference. I've also discovered that my hand low on the stick, middle finger on the NWS button, is a great technique when precise control is necessary like on the tanker. There is just a little sloppiness (light control pressures causing too much input?) around the center that makes fine motions not so fine. I haven't tried tanking the viper in in DCS since making the changes but think that all of the above will make tanking less difficult.

      Also worth trying in case of the Hornet is hitting the A/P button, but not selecting a mode. Makes the controls more granular and helps especially with non-extended sticks. Probably not a real technique, but if it's there, why not use it? XD

    I could not use the Reverb G2 because the sweet spot is so small. The slighting movement of the headset and it was blur-fest. Switched to the Varjo Aero and it was obviously a big improvement. I have a Quest 3 as well, but haven't tried simming in it yet, but visual clarity is good in that headset and it has a large sweet spot, so I imagine it will work well.

    • @CakePrincessCelestia
      @CakePrincessCelestia Рік тому

      Quest 3 is brilliant in that regard since those lenses have a massive sweet spot and stellar edge to edge clarity. You could literally have your IPD off by 2 or 3 mm and totally not even notice it. I've heard of people doing that on purpose to get a slightly wider FOV by setting a higher IPD than they actually have.

    It’s great that they corrected the energy loss of the F-16. I believe the software simulates induced drag that increases with the increase of lift due to high AoA. In my opinion that was not modelled correctly for the F-16 and led to not being able sustain 9Gs at low altitudes. An F-16 pilot had told me the same thing exactly as you mentioned. At 5K feet the (clean) F-16 holds 9Gs as long as your body can take it :)

    • @RW-zn8vy
      @RW-zn8vy Рік тому

      Wags said the model is correct and you can hold 9g with the correct conditions until you run if out of fuel but the pilots lack of holding g force is the issue.

    0:35 Heard about this on the MGS already... not great, but you gotta live with what you have, I guess.
    BTW since you still have the G2, you might want to consider getting either a Quest Pro or 3 as an upgrade. Main reason would be them having pancake lenses with a much bigger sweet spot and a vastly improved sharpness when you're not looking directly forward (edge to edge clarity). Quest 3 has about the same resolution as the G2 and a better processor for standalone stuff (You actually could try a few awesome VR games instead of playing Starfield :P) and way better mixed / augmented reality than the Pro while the Pro comes with Mini LED and local dimming, so you get better blacks and contrasts, almost as good as with OLED panels and eye tracking which, with OpenXR toolkit active, can make use of Dynamic Foveated Rendering which only renders the area you're looking at at full resolution and the rest at a lower one to further improve framerates. The Pro is 1200 bucks, but the Q3 can also add up if you were to take the 512GB version (not required for PCVR at all and not necessarily required for standalone either, unless you don't like uninstalling stuff for freeing up space for something new), a replacement headstrap with additial battery (acts both as a counterweight to make the thing more comfy as well as a "playtime extension") and possibly even the Pro controllers for those VR games with basically hassle-free all around tracking.
    I'd say getting the Q3 with the BoboVR M3 Pro and a second battery for that thing with the charging pad and a VR Cover facial interface cover set would be preferrable, especially if you might want to have a look into other VR experiences like some really great shooters such as Half-Life: Alyx. It's also exceptionally great for watching movies in a virtual theater.
    In either case, having at least a Wifi 5 capable router or access point in the room(s) you're going to play or sim in is highly recommended if you'd be going for wireless (which is great), but you'd get the best experience with a Wifi 6E Triband capable router like the Asus RT-AXE7800 as that can provide much higher bitrates. Alternatively you could just use Link via cable and for that you probably should get the one that VR Cover offers which is very high quality and only costs half as much as the original one from Meta.
    One thing particularly beneficial with Meta headsets is the fact that you can use Link/Air Link to connect with the Obulus software on your PC which comes with the Oculus Mirror. That tool has a great image stabilization feature which makes watching the VR footage on YT, Twitch and other platforms noticably more pleasant if you then take that mirror as your OBS screen source.
    But I digress... (it's worth it, those lenses are so much better!) XD
    2:51 I'm sure both the Tomcat _(TOMCATS!)_ and the Hornet have that modelled, but I don't know why others, especially the Viper don't.
    3:06 _VIPERS!_
    5:03 Interesting fact. Having a realistic pilot body physics model would probably make 98% of the DCS community die constantly in any kind of rate fight... XD
    6:07 Without even knowing the real thing I always found that particularly strange, similar to the TDC in the Hornet that keeps returning to the top left corner on unlocking.
    7:05 Nice setup!
    7:17 You genuinely already got the literal Easy Mode right there with the VR headset.
    7:35 See above ;) - Quest 3 then, it can do 120Hz, the Pro is limited to 90.
    17:53 Down The Good Old Rate Fight Toilet Bowl :D

    Maybe it's been pointed out, but tankers are not always in a turn in DCS. They should be set to orbit/racetrack between two points, I set mine at 20 miles. The turn they take when they get each end of the race-track is a bit harsh I think, but they do fly straight between each end of the race track.

    You can try lower the brightness of your vr headset to get a more clean faster picture.. a higher brightness blurs the picture and everything gets wobbly. If its a few ticks darker it will be a get a bit flat but better for your eyes. You have to find the sweetspot.

    I program the tanker with five waypoints with waypoint three set for "racetrack" orbit with the addition of "RTB on bingo". That keeps it in a long turn between two points that's so flat you dont notice the turn really.
    As for getting gas from the tanker. I was filling up my car last week and this dude down the street fired a few shots in the air for no reason. I said out loud (because my stress reaction is to be comical) "Transfer Complete, Disconnect.." And Noped my way out of that gas station without filling the tank completely.

    DCS has some odd shader effects, so "details" on aircraft kinda disappear at quite close distance(fly WW2 and you'll notice stuff like yellow noses on the Germans kinda just disappear into darkness,) if you fly IL2 or even better Cliffs over dover blitz, the details of aircraft are much more noticeable at further distances, in cliffs over dover blitz I can spot those yellow noses on the 109s from much further away then in DCS. So there is "something going on with the lighting on 3d models" in DCS that makes seeing details much harder than it should be.

    Great video, this is why I love UA-cam. If you have a 4090 moving up to a Quest3 with VD in Godlike mode is a significant upgrade in that it gives you the ability to move your eyes to read instruments instead of your head. I only fly GA in real life but the lens improvement of the Q3 is what really “finished” the sim for me in comparison and replication of the real world.

    • @CakePrincessCelestia
      @CakePrincessCelestia Рік тому

      Those lenses rock for the exact reason you desscribed. There are headsets out there with a higher res than the Q3 or G2 (which are roughly in the same ballpark), like the Varjo Aero or the Pimax Crystal, but in a Q3, you got the sharpness all across the FOV which is way more important IMHO. With Wifi 6E and bitrates of up to 400MBit/s in wireless streaming, there isn't much left of the compression artifacts either.
      And it's a great headset for other VR games. Totally wouldn't mind watching Mover try some of the really good shooters out there. Definitely more immersion than playing Starfield... XD

  • @paristo
    @paristo Рік тому

    05:12 For well over 10 years, I have been waiting that ED would do something about proper G effects... As nothing is more ruining the multiplayer games than players with TrackIR etc just looking straight back while pulling 9G and looking everywhere without any problems.
    For VR users the camera can't be touched, but you can always black out the rear of the plane so there is nothing to see...
    For all display users, you can manipulate the camera as you want, just pull it to the center or lock it in place etc.
    And another thing as well is the hands, it is time that all the cockpit functions are disabled that are not in the HOTAS. So when you are pulling G's, you can't example operate the UFC or master arm etc when your hand weights like 50 kg and you forgot that damn switch.
    And that is where ED really needs feedback from the pilots, to get the visual effects and all, right. Sure there is dozens of visual effects that each pilot experience differently and different days and times, but that is what ED needs to do. To make the G simulation actually worthwhile and effective limitation to consider on each engagement.
