I’ve watched literally thousands of The Warning reactions over the last half dozen years. Most by people with no more music background or historical Rock knowledge than Charlie the cat. I’m just gonna say it Eric, you’re the best in the business! My mind and vocabulary expand every time I watch you. The fact you don’t have 20X the subs you do is an injustice.
I don’t know if you’ve ever considered it, but some fellow TW Patreon members and I were discussing what a great interviewer of the ladies you’d be. If you’re interested let me/us know if we can help make that happen. They are very humble and approachable with no diva attitudes whatsoever.

@RandyTWA. I support this 100%. They've been to Nashville before, surely they can find a reason to return? I support them on Patreon and I would gladly support a separate project in order to hear them talk with this gentleman for an extended interview. Imagine the subject matter they could discuss intelligently!

    • @MrJest2
      @MrJest2 9 місяців тому +7

Absolutely agree; Eric does an absolutely fantastic analysis, on multiple levels. Not merely musically, but in the complex social aspects of _how_ a certain piece of music makes it's impact. This is something few people do, and it probably has to do with his long radio background. One learns quickly in that business not only what _is_ popular, but what *makes* a particular band work and develop popularity. And that's very important if a band wants to be successful.
And Charlie the cat needs more pets and rubs. 😋

This album was recorded in 2016, so it would make them 16, 14, and 11 years old (or younger) when this was written. It was released in 2017. In their January 2017 TEDx presentation, they stated that they had recently completed recording their first album and they performed three songs that were going to be on it. Incredible insight from these young composers.

  • @jeffreyjameson5510

To add to my previous comment, I believe the reason these girls are such successful musicians is that they all started on piano. They understand musical keys and chords, and how music sounds. I think it’s the reason that they can harmonize together. They understand what makes a song a song And their parents exposed them to lots of classic rock music. And they have fused that with all the modern music that they love.

  • @williamburkholder769

This is one of the important songs that gives The Warning their name. *Disciple, Kool Aid Kids,* and *Z* are examples of others. The literal messages in the lyrics and the metaphorical/allegorical messages in the video combine to kick us into a moment of reflection... Thanks for giving this the time! And yes, they assimilate influences from the best of many genres! Creativity is often the art of stealing and regurgitating something familiar, yet new enough to work better. These kids (in 2017) had been taught well, and paid extremely close attention to their teachers and producers. Then they became, arguably, the hardest working three-piece in rock.

Pau the drummer was I think 14, 15 when released and Danny was 16 just turning 17 before release. The recording was funded by a go fund me campaign.

I believe The Warning's early start in music infuses a refreshing and authentic quality into their work. The transition from covering songs on UA-cam to creating original music adds a relatable element to their journey. In summary, The Warning combines musical talent, authenticity, and a genuine passion for their craft, which makes it impossible for me not to love both them and their music.

  • @oldmanyeni1663
    @oldmanyeni1663 9 місяців тому +9

The Warning have a sound that is both new and familiar. It is certainly hard rock, but clearly influenced by their love of all genres and all eras: metal, punk, K-pop, indie, grunge, funk, and many other genres including classical music. But they have taken those influences, both new and old, and forged a sound that is uniquely their own, and you know that it is them. At the same time simple and complex.
What does it sound like to me? Refreshing. A sound that has caught my ear and made me interested in rock again after 25+ years of the same old playlist. While together their combined ages are about the same as mine, their musical maturity is exceptionally high.

  • @zamdrist

I love the way you put in to words what a lot of us are subconsciously feeling but may be unable to express or even understand.
Such a poignant song and video. I think most of us, at some level, understand the actual warning from The Warning.
We see it on a daily basis hidden in the chaos of daily life but DPA has a knack of putting it front and center in a neat little package at such a young age here.
This is obviously a trope that is important to them as they view the world from their perspective as demonstrated by them returning to the topic throughout their career to date.
It’s up to each of us individually to heed the warning if we can?

And "showing butt" is an expression of acceptance and friendship. My wife and I like to say they're "showing their ID card", because that's almost literally what it is. The scent of the rear end is both identification and demonstration of a cat's attitude and feelings, as well as their general health (through various pheromones and other generated smells, most too subtle for us mere humans to detect). Scent is tremendously important to cats, and a major part of their sensory lives - some say up to 75% of their total sensory input.
So just accept it for what it is, although I draw the line at sniffing butt myself... 😋

i always wonder how many others notice the number on the indoctrination pod the baby is placed into... many of us think it may be a shout out to YES and their 1983 album _"90125"_ which was released two years after Yes broke up... you can find a few links to that album in its entirety... not really a music video as it is only the music but you can also find OMVs for some of the songs on that album... the OMV for the first song on that YES album also has a similar theme as this video with "culprits" and "recovery agents"... the video and whole album is a great trip back in time...
so back to this original video by DPA/TW... yes, the imagery is awesome and extremely thought provoking... there's a lot being said in there... one of the main things is about taking a leap of faith and leaving things behind... this is absolutely a track about social media, technology, and how they affect people in ways they don't know or understand... in this case, everyone is so wrapped up in their devices and social media that they cannot see what is going on around them... thus the blindfolds... notice, too, the colors used... when someone takes their blindfold off, the world lights up in the prettier colors of reality...
the video was nominated for and won numerous awards back in 2017...
    - LA CINEFEST Semifinalist 2017
    - Feel The Reel IFF, Audience Award October 2017
    - Official Selection Austin Music Video Festival 2017
    - Best Music Video Nominee Pantalla de Cristal Festival 2017
    - I Filmmaker International Film Festival Official Selection 2017
    - Best Script / Narrative Music Videos Pantalla de Cristal Festival 2017
    - Best Music Video Around Films International Film Festival Barcelona April 2017
(not listed in any specific order)
anyway, great reaction... yes, you're not the only one to be totally shocked at that one point in the video! 😹

Growing up listening to Yes, saw them live a few times as well, I did pick up on that and wondered. They are quite brilliant, would not be surprised if it was intentional.

@@CarlD70 yeah, i don't know if they watched MTV with actual MVs when they were small or not... they have mentioned watching concerts on TV but not if they were video tapes or something broadcast live... they do have a lot of influences from many older bands, though... plus someone on their team may have gotten inspiration from some old videos, too... unless they tell us directly, we'll never really know 😹

In the Allison Hagendorf interview Dany cites Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb from the Pulse show, as a song that changed her life. More specifically the guitar work.

Hey Eric! Great analysis. Pau sets the feel with the changing of her fills, tempo, half times, her choice of primary instrument throughout the songs, sometimes toms, sometimes cymbals, sometimes HiHat, always different from one verse and chorus to the next. Ale is the Groove. She sets the time, and the mood. She is a human metronome and never a wrong note. Dany is the Soul. She is the sugar and spice and everything nice sprinkled on top. She is a Master of her guitar and effects. To hear them live you would NEVER believe there is only 3 of them. They just run over you with a wall of sound!

So, I really enjoy your UA-cam channel, and as you can probably imagine, I found it as a direct result of recently learning about The Warning. By the fate of everything good on this earth, I stumbled upon these young ladies, and I gave them a listen, as I have a soft spot for Sisters. You see, I have two amazing Daughters that I am very close to, my oldest, lives in Flagstaff, and my youngest, just lost her battle with Melanoma in January. The Warning was music we all agreed on, and by watching all of the talent the Monterey/Tre have on display via UA-cam, Ive been able to occupy a bit of the empty space inside of me. So when I saw the song Martiro live @ Teatro, I was so blown away, that I felt compelled to tell you, so you could see it yourself! It is 100% in Spanish, but I promise you, it will not matter, because you will be speechless when you see it! Keep up the great work, Eric!

Excellent reaction and analysis! I can picture the sisters, by themselves, in a room writing a song without anyone telling them, "No! You can't do that!". I do know that The Warning has too much respect for their fans to ever put out a substandard track. They have made sure that everything they do can be done their way. And their way is doing everything with the creative freedom that sets them apart. Every release raises the bar. That familiarity we feel comes from their influences that are everywhere in their music. What's really cool is that now, that familiarity includes their earlier recordings. Love them or not, they are just about to explode. 10 years of hard work, focus, talent, and humility is going to pay off soon. I can't wait!

Excellent breakdown, it's amazing when you think about the fact that Pau almost didn't get to be a drummer, no one wanted to take her as a student because she was so small. Thankfully, they found Beto Ramos and he took her as a student after a test session. I don't even like to think about what the music world would have missed if Pau never learned to play drums. All three of these young women are extraordinarily talented musicians who have put in a ton of hard work to get where they are today, and they will only get better.

It had been a while since I listened to this track, I forgot how good it is. Spot on about how the sound is familiar yet not familiar.
Kitty is stealing the show; he needs his own channel!

We adopted a tuxie almost 10 years ago. Love him to pieces, and the next time we get a new cat (may be a while; we've currently got four, although all different breeds), I'm definitely going to look for another one.

I think that the girls have been exposed to so many different styles via their parents and various online arenas that they're all going to surface in a variant somewhere in one of their songs. They listen to K-Pop, alternative rock, as well as Pink Floyd, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Muse, and many others. There's a lot going on inside those heads.

Some interesting nuances from you man .Funny that you should mention about the s. Cali vibe to this song as every time i hear the song "Z" it reminds me of California for some reason and i'm English !

I think you’re onto something with the regional origins of the sound. People refer to a “classic rock vibe” but I’ve always heard, especially in this song, a Texas sound. Also including a hint of the surf, post-rockabilly mentality. I spent a couple years in the 90s obsessed with 60s surf and hot rod songs and this pulls in a lot of that feel. Most of those bands were from Southern California and the southwest in general. Of course that shouldn’t be at all surprising since they’re from the region, just a few hours south of the border.

The video reminds me so much of Nightwish's _Noise_ (which you covered some time ago), and it's probably my favourite of their MVs (NW and The Warning are both very much live bands in my opinion). Our cat is not in my good books today because he came and sat on my legs at 6 this morning, waking me up...

i have got to ask, were you and your show ever on (syndicated?) radio? i remember listening to a show very similar to what you are doing now, only several years/decades back... i can't say what nights but probably late on the weekend? maybe? i quite enjoyed it as i do your show, here and now... very nice, enjoyable, and informative! keep up the good work! 👍

I've never been syndicated, but I've been on stations that streamed. I hosted a show for a short time out of Nashville, "Deep Cuts with Jake Wylde". I've never used Eric Clark as my radio name, so any Eric Clarks on the radio aren't me. I was Jake Wylde.
      Cheers,
      Eric

@@TheWyldesidewithEricClark cool! i may have heard "Deep Cuts"... depending on where i was when you were doing it... i spent time traveling across the US back in the '80s... i could have been anywhere if it were that long ago... plus if it were also (re)broadcast by other stations that might explain it, too... i will say that each time i drop by for one of your shows, i have like a huge dejavu time period and i love it! 😜😹

I have been racking my brain for ages trying to figure out what that starting guitar and drums reminds me off. The closest I have came up with is Pu**y Liquor by Rob Zombie. With that said, they sound very different, but still the same in my head somehow.
