Finally! A use for the cheap chinese tap and die set i bought 30 years ago!
I never get to know my father since he left my mom and when I was 2 years old, that’s why I admire the content with you and your dad, I can imagine how much he’s missed in your life every day..
I got a son he’s 23 and ill try to be all the farther my own farther never was too me so you Adam inspire me and I love how you involve the hole family and that your mother lives in the house next to yours.
Much admiration from Copenhagen
🇩🇰
Awesome trick! Will definitely be using this one. The reason the dowel isn't 1/2" when using a 1/2UNC die is that the minor diameter of 1/2UNC thread is approx .4" roughly 3/8" after some sanding. If you want a 1/2" dowel, use a 5/8UNC die as that has a minor diameter of .51".
Thank you from France I needed 8 dowels, it was an emergency, I made them after I found your old man's tip !
Awesome!
Yea this does work BUT I would never sand it when I use it in joinery. The roughness holds the gluing better. Learned this over 47 years ago from my grand dad. Thanks for sharing this.
i was all worry about what modifications that I have to make to the die. You are not limited to sizes.
This is great.
Thank you.
The respect you have for your dad and his experience speaks volumes. Kids butt heads with their dads when they begin to think they know as much or more than their mentor. That’s rarely the case, mind you. But it’s been the bane of father-son relationships for millennia. Thanks for sharing! Subscribed!
That’s great! I’m always interested in hearing of ways to use tools I have for other purposes. Thanks for sharing this tip.
Enjoy the time with your dad, I also enjoyed working with my dad . I lost him this past year and mom this year. I had the 68 years so I can not complain, but I still miss them. Make the best of the time you have. Thanks for the good instruction. Tommy
Thank you Tommy. I’m sorry for your loss. Unfortunately I lost my Dad last year. After working with him almost every day of my adult life it’s been difficult. God bless you and your family.
I do understand as I worked with my dad many years. Thanks for the reply@@HAXMAN
I like that, “…listening to someone who may know more than you…” 👍👏😊
12:01 Great hack my friend- thanks to you and your dad. I appreciated the short comments on you working with your dad- I lost mine when I was 10 and missed out on a lot of practical workmanship and ingenuity that he had. Keep the great vids coming.
It is a godsend to have people on you tube, like you, who are willing to devote their time to help others and find ways to save us a few bucks in the process. I always search for ways to make my projects easier and more affordable , plus you people have a lot of ingenious ways of doing things, thank you for your time in doing this for us novices.
Honestly, they "devote" their time in order to get views and make money. A lot of work goes into filming and editing videos. Those who post them are not usually doing so out of the kindness of their hearts.
5:25 it starts. Pretty cool! Thank you for sharing!
But after watching the whole video
I have to say i really enjoyed it! I learned something new today that will help me out ad long as o am alive. Thank you
What a great idea! It's the easiest way I've seen to make wood dowels, and I could make many different sizes.
I just love the son and dad story! Great video
Awesome video. No making jigs marking or cutting backs of wood to eventually end up 1hr later , in the same place as you but you done it in seconds. Excellent video
Push Stick cut-off was a solid piece of advice. I'd never thought of it.
I have seen so many really cheap tap and dye sets at garage/yard/tag sales. A cheap set is all you need because its hardend for metal and its been used for wood. Great Hack indeed!
A great idea 😊👍💥. 6:10 am
Absolutely genius!!! You my good man are a genius!!
Good advice at the end there. No room for prima dona's. When I teach classes I'm happy to listen to good ideas from my students. As long as you're willing to learn, you get better and better.
I accidentally came across this video and now I have an idea on how to make an arrow shaft. Thanks for the idea. Subbed.
Spot on advice at the end, you can do something the hard way for years until you watch a you tube video, thankyou from sunny England
You love and respect your dad....cool.
"10 seconds" starts at 8:49
Awesome tip, thanks! Just made two 1m-long dowels with this method. Pro tip: Keep pushing hard against the die, otherwise you end up with a partially-grooved (screwed?) dowel :)
Perfect for making dowels that match the wood used in the body! Thank you.
Ingenious- one that i know i will certainly utilize. Thank you!
This is the best idea I have seen to make dowels out of different colored and types of woods for projects involving pocket holes.. I like your comments about what the actual hack is all about and what you said about your Dad. This video contains real advice from a professional and I thank you so very much for making and posting it.... I feel very fortunate to have found this video...Have a nice day...
Thank you so much! I’m glad you found it useful.
This is such a great method and so quick. Ive messed about with a hole and plane blade but this is hard to set up. This way it great. If you start with a bigger sized die you can work down to your size and get less tear out then on your final pass you can go full drill speed with a slow feed and get a smooth finish
Awesome thank you and your dad. Finally a use for my $40 garbage tap n die set.
This really works! Thanks.
The information in this video is really cool. I also liked the part where you were saying about the respect you have for your Dad, but also being humble and open enough to receive help from others. Not to be so fast to assume that we know all as an individual. Great advice!
🙏🏼💙🙏🏼
Great stuff as always, thanks! I’ll definitely put this to use! Lost my Dad when I was 28 but glad yours is still around! Enjoy your family while you have them (even when they drive you nuts)!
Amen 😎
Thanks. Now I've finally found a use for those junk dies I got at the auto parts store.
I learned woodworking from my grandfather. Wish my son had interest.
Your grand daughter or grandson will.
i wish i had a dad who taught me woodworking. im trying to learn because i have always been fascinated by bow making
@@Soviless99 me too
Very good, now o have an use for my chineses kit...thank's for share your idea
I love your attitude about learning! There is always more to learn. Thanks for the video and the tip!
The more you know, the more you know you don’t know!
Good stuff, thanks for this. Will be trying it with teak, wish me luck!
I like seeing your work shop how you make things
Great tip. I don't have a tap and die set, but years ago I had a few taps which I used to cut threads in oak, and then ran the fasteners into the wood. Some of the jigs I built 20 years ago are as strong as they were when new. I think I will pick up a set now that I have a use for the dies. Thanks!
It's bad enough the login makers would allow mfs to treT and put there gd hands on someone 18 times in 2 years he ain't saying nothing u will tell that stupid gd area who what and why take the gd place do something
Really good use of a tap and die set. 👍
I don't even need any dowels right now but I still have to try this.
That last message is crucial. I'm always looking to learn new things. And an outside perspective on a problem can be Paramount to solving it.
Great advice no matter what path you may be on in life!
Thank you Haxman, this is the perfect solution for rounding over some square stub ends of curved slats for fitting into round holes. The shape of the slats meant I couldn't just take them to the router table. I was stuck -- thinking I'd have to whittle 96 stubs by hand -- until I saw your video. Thanks for sharing!
Feature that dad mo on channel sounds like a super hero
He is.
@@HAXMAN cool my first video twas helpful will be checkin some more
I will probably never do any of these things...well maybe the fire pit one...but I’m still watching. Love the content, thanks!
Wow thank you and your Dad for your informative videos!! Love to watch and listen..you are very entertaining!!
Great trick! I have everything needed. I wanted to learn ways to make home made dowels in order to make wood arrows for archery. Coincidently I saw you have a recurve on the wall at 0:14 on your video.
Trik trik krja yang luar biasa hasil jos
So, almost 9 minutes to show how to, “make a dowel” in 19 seconds…….
That's why I didn't subscribe.
He’s really got some great videos. Most videos take longer than necessary. If you don’t have time to listen then just click the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner of the video and when the menu comes up click on playback speed and adjust to 2x. Just listen closely.
Spent most of his time on his family history, then he finally made the dowel it was 1/8" shy! 🤦♂️. Forget "hacks" make a dowel plate!
Yeah, right off the bat, I recognized this is gonna take a while, so I just kept jumping forward to the real stuff. Some people love the sound of their own voice.
This is a dye tool, this is how to use it to make dowels, THE END! Why does everyone who makes a video have to give you their “life story” (and often not very relevant) before talking about and showing ‘WHAT WE CAME TO WATCH & LEARN”?! 95% of most UA-cam vids can be cut down by more than half the length.
This is also a great way to sharpen pencils for your kid at the beginning of the school year. I sharpened a whole box of 30 in like 2 minutes.
Congratulations you are the dad of the year
Nice trick for an emergency. But dowels are one thing I'd rather buy. Cheap, consistent sizes, smooth, easy to find, and I can get back to making my project faster.
Great idea! Haven’t tried it yet but will with Cyprus wood.
I use some Wenge 5/16x18. Technique works like a charm thank you
good hack, thanks from California
Arrows! Awesome! ❤
Great idea love your explanation to it all, keep going with your hacks.
You should get some shadowfoam on that rear peg board would enhance it massively
Drill required size in an old circular saw blade. Damage one spot inside the hole with a centre punch to creat a bit of a dag. Clamp down or vice hold said blade and ditto.
Works a treat
Great dowel tool for dies, thank you.
I love learning a way to do something to where I say “Why have I never thought of that”! Not a carpenter but love making things! Great advice at the end, other peoples ideas or knowledge can make it easier even a bad/dumb idea can lead to a way! Yes, there are stupid questions.
!! Wow never Crazy Wow !! I,m mecnec use them for rethreading Bolts Lots But I say never thought of using this so Congrats to ya Keep sharin this is good to hav fun and enjoying fun Ya Makin tracks for Bulldozers and Been Lookin to find easy way to make them thks again Ya Me and My Son do the Same He Thinks I'm Crazy Cause I'm Old he,s Young And Knows Whole Lot More Ha ha
Very useful video, thank you.
Fantastic! Just what I needed!
Absolutely brilliant!! Your dad is a legend ! Ggreat tutorial ! Such a handy hack Haxman!!
And so true. We can learn a lot from our elders. They got by on far less than what we have at our disposal.
Actual technique is 8:25 in.
Not all heroes wear capes
That is faster, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the idea!!!!!!
All the best to you and your Family.
Great trick would have loved to see you do that with Black Walnut. Ceder make that look easy!!
Ha, and to think I have been making wooden arrows by hand. Game changer.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
All you guys can talk all the shit you want. I’d watch this video 15 more times and it would still save me time on building table saw jigs and sharpening plane irons to do it the other ways (that even 40 plus years carpenters suggest). This is the easiest way to do this. Obviously, the man is just being personable to help his subscriber base. I’ll never understand the people who have to talk shit when really they can just ignore the video.
Thanks Haxman. I’ll be applying this tomorrow.
Thank you bro I was struggling with the razor /wood jig
What you came for... 8:39 Very good idea!
hey brother i wish i had a Video with Dad, it's amazing
Excellent video...
I wonder if the fine thread dies would give a smoother initial finish on the dowels
Cool. I need a 2" diameter dowel. I also saw a youtuber make dowels using round over router bits
great idea Thanks for sharing Now I can easily make my cedar arrow shafts. among many other projects.
Perfect for arrow shafts sweet.
Way cool!
I'm getting back into woodworking and UA-cam has been a great source for learning. Your channel just got on my subscribe list. Thank you!
8:41-8:51 Save yourself 12 minutes and 11 seconds
I LIKE IT THANK YOU
Great trick. As a quick rule. A 1/2-13 die will make it 1/2” - 1/13” or .42”. A little less than 3/8”. Use the pitch as a fraction to subtract from the nominal bolt diameter. With a little care, you can get pretty close to what you want.
Bosch guy! Love it. I have found them to be very capable power tools.
I really like them. I used to work allot with Makita, Milwaukee, Wurth and Hilti during my work hours as an electrician, but my personal power tools are all Bosch. Good ergo, good weight, good durability and good materials. And the repairs are affordable, unlike other power tool brands (looking at you Hilti!). Certainly the best bang for your buck especially since power tool companies tend to make their lines obsolete every 5 years.
Thanks for sharing. Excellent idea!
I like this idea. Also, they now have a setup where you can turn your drill into a lathe, which is useful if you want to make larger dowels or ornate furniture legs without having to buy an expensive lathe.
Does this work on really hard woods like ebony, or chippy woods like sugar maple and red oak?
Brilliant 👍😁🏴
Oh man, I’m laughing so hard. The intro with the badass guitar riffs, slo-mo kickass tool montage, and then…
“Yo, that hurt! Splinter to the nose.”
Good lord man! I'm 4 minutes in and checking out. I don't know if this video actually contains a way to make dowels, but I'm not waiting to find out.
Very cool, Old timers always knew cool tool tricks...
Gonna try it, matching the same wood for pocket screw holes will be alot easier now.
I have mis match colors with this black walnut.... not to cool with it.
Great Idea for making dowels. I would point out however, that plugs and dowels are different animals. Using a dowel as a plug will show end grain on the exposed surface. A plug on the other hand since it is cut across the grain, will leave long grain showing on the finished surface. Careful use of a plug cutter can yield a plug that is much harder to see from the surrounding grain. In some cases it almost disappears.
Real craftsmen don’t need to defend their work... let what you do speak louder than your critics.
Pretty smart!
Super idée
Honour et respect your parents
