    Pro tip
    take and mark out a circle of the size dowel you want onto the steel first, and take a smaller drill bit and drill in 1/4 or halfway through the steel on the line of your circle (in a triangle pattern). Then drill the hole for the down, you create three blades with the other three partial drill marks, and lets you shave the dowel without having to use much pressure.

    When I lived in Montana, I knew an old guy that made his own arrows like that. He would start off bigger than he wanted them, then sand smooth to a perfect size. He would also do it by hand.

  • @Sflynn74
    @Sflynn74 4 роки тому +10

    Make it more better by using angle iron for your 'piece of steel' so you can screw it to your bench and have both hands free to do the screwy bit. Also make a star cut along the hole with a zip disk in your grinder or dremel to cut more faster and more better. Then if you want it to be most bestest make several holes in ascending (or descending, I don't judge) order so you can easily resize (measure twice, do the screwy bit once) the dowels if you so desire. This method also eliminates the sanding bit of the tip as you can just start it on a larger size (but just the tip) then go down a size or two. Or, you can do half a dowel in say 5/8" then put half again in 3/8" cut accordingly, sand liberally and have a button top dowel screw cover (or a wooden nipple like object to do with as you wish, again, I don't judge).

    Works great, I made it a bit easier for production sake. I made a " HOLDER" for the stock. I took a piece of square tube metal stock , happened to be 3/4" stock x 2" long, it could be any size really, welded a piece of square metal stock to the end of the tube, then welded a 1/4" pipe nipple centered on the square piece. This completes the " HOLDER". Now, Insert the 1/4" nipple into your drill or drill press, cut your wood stock to the size of dowel you want, leave about a 3" butt of stock the inside dimension of the square tube, insert the butt into the HOLDER and dowel away. I chose 3/4" square tube so I could use the same tool for making any size dowel.

    At the end you suggest glueing up blocks to make a cross grain dowel. My guess is that it would explode very quickly when you try to turn it through the cutting hole.
    Better solution, Screw countersunk and a plug cutter plug of matching material.
